We explore the radio emission of spectroscopically confirmed, X-ray weak, Broad Line AGN (BLAGN, or type 1) selected with JWST in the GOODS-N field, one of the fields with the best combination of deep radio observations and statistics of JWST-selected BLAGN. We use deep radio data at different frequencies (144\,MHz, 1.5\,GHz, 3\,GHz, 5.5\,GHz, 10\,GHz), and we find that none of the 22 sources investigated is detected at any of the aforementioned frequencies. Similarly, the radio stacking analysis does not reveal any detection down to an rms of $\sim 0.2\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$, corresponding to a $3\sigma$ upper limit at rest frame 5 GHz of $L_{5GHz}=2\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at the mean redshift of the sample $z\sim 5.2$. We compared this and individual sources upper limits with expected radio luminosities estimated assuming different AGN scaling relations. For most of the sources the radio luminosity upper limits are still compatible with expectations for radio-quiet (RQ) AGN; nevertheless, the more stringent stacking upper limits and the fact that no detection is found would suggest that JWST-selected BLAGN are weaker than standard AGN even at radio frequencies. We discuss some scenarios that could explain the possible radio weakness, such as free-free absorption from a dense medium, or the lack of either magnetic field or a corona, possibly as a consequence of super-Eddington accretion. These scenarios would also explain the observed X-ray weakness. We also conclude that $\sim$1 dex more sensitive radio observations are needed to better constrain the level of radio emission (or lack thereof) for the bulk of these sources. The interaction between radio-jets and quasar host galaxies plays a paramount role in quasar/galaxy co-evolution. However, very little has been known so far about this interaction at very high-z. Here, we present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations in Band 7 and Band 3 of six radio-loud quasars' host galaxies at $z > 5$. We recover [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and underlying dust continuum emission at $>2\sigma$ for five sources, while we obtain upper limits for the CO(6-5) emission line and continuum for the remaining source. At the spatial resolution of our observations ($\sim$1.0"-1.4"), we do not recover perturbed/extended morphologies or kinematics, signatures of potential mergers. These galaxies already host large quantities of gas, with [CII]-based star formation rates of $30-400 M_{\odot} $yr$^{-1}$. Building their radio/sub-mm spectral energy distributions (SEDs), we find that in at least four cases the 1mm continuum intensity arises from a combination of synchrotron and dust emission, with an initial estimation of synchrotron contribution at 300 GHz of $\gtrsim$10%. We compare the properties of the sources inspected here with a large collection of radio-quiet sources from the literature, as well as a sample of radio-loud quasars from previous studies, at comparable redshift. We recover a potential mild decrease in $L_{\rm [CII]}$ for the radio-loud sources, which might be due to a suppression of the cool gas emission due to the radio-jets. We do not find any [CII]-emitting companion galaxy candidate around the five radio-loud quasars observed in Band 7: given the depth of our dataset, this result is still consistent with that observed around radio-quiet quasars. Further higher-spatial resolution observations, over a larger frequency range, of high-z radio-loud quasars hosts will allow for a better understanding of the physics of such sources., Comment: 20 pages; 11 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

Arecibo 305-m Telescope observations between 2008 and 2018 detected a radio continuum and spectral-line outburst in the nearby galaxy, NGC 660. Excited-OH maser emission/absorption lines near 4.7 GHz, and H$_2$CO absorption at 4.83 GHz varied on time-scales of months. Simultaneously, a continuum outburst occurred in which a new compact component appeared, with a GHz-peaked spectrum and a 5-GHz flux density that rose to a peak value of about 500 mJy from 2008.0 to 2012.0. Follow-up interferometric continuum images from theVery Large Array (VLA) at 10 GHz of this new continuum component determined it to be located at the nucleus of NGC 660. Subsequent High Sensitivity Array (HSA) line and continuum VLBI observations of the NGC 660 nucleus revealed a morphology that appears to be consistent with rapidly-precessing, mildly-relativistic jets from the central black hole. While requiring detailed modeling, this strongly suggests that the outburst is due to nuclear activity. From its time-scale, the shape of the continuum light-curve, and the milliarcsec radio structure, the most likely cause of the outburst is AGN-type activity of accretion of a gas cloud onto the central black hole., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

We present the second data release of the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS), consisting of wideband continuum catalogues of 391 pointings observed at L~band. The full wideband catalogue covers 4344 deg$^2$ of sky, reaches a depth of 10 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$, and contains 971,980 sources. With its balance between survey depth and sky coverage, MALS DR2 covers five orders of magnitude of flux density, presenting a robust view of the extragalactic radio source population down to 200 $\mu$Jy. Using this catalogue, we perform a measurement of the cosmic radio dipole, an anisotropy in the number counts of radio sources with respect to the cosmic background, analogous to the dipole found in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For this measurement, we present the characterisation of completeness and noise properties of the catalogue, and show that a declination-dependent systematic affects the number density of faint sources. In the dipole measurement on the MALS catalogue, we recover reasonable dipole measurements once we model the declination systematic with a linear fit between the size of the major axis of the restoring beam and the amount of sources of each pointing. The final results are consistent with the CMB dipole in terms of direction and amplitude, unlike many recent measurements of the cosmic radio dipole made with other centimetre wavelength catalogues, which generally show a significantly larger amplitude. This result demonstrates the value of dipole measurements with deeper and more sparse radio surveys, as the population of faint sources probed may have had a significant impact on the measured dipole., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures. We report a new, rare detection of HI 21-cm absorption associated with a quasar (only six known at $15$ GHz). The simplest explanation would be that no large HI column (N(HI)$>10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$) is present towards the radio `core' and the optical AGN. Based on the joint optical and radio analysis of a heterogeneous sample of 16 quasars ($z_{median}$ = 0.7) and 15 radio galaxies ($z_{median}$ = 0.3) with HI 21-cm absorption detection and matched in 1.4 GHz luminosity (L$_{\rm 1.4\,GHz}$), a consistent picture emerges where quasars are primarily tracing the gas in the inner circumnuclear disk and cocoon created by the jet-ISM interaction. These exhibit L$_{1.4\,\rm GHz}$ - $\Delta V_{\rm null}$ correlation, and frequent mismatch between the radio and optical spectral lines. The radio galaxies show no such correlation and likely trace the gas from the cocoon and the galaxy-wide ISM outside the photoionization cone. The analysis presented here demonstrates the potential of radio spectroscopic observations to reveal the origin of the absorbing gas associated with AGN that may be missed in optical observations., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Magnetic fields likely play an important role in star formation, but the number of directly measured magnetic field strengths remains scarce. We observed the 38.3 and 38.5 GHz Class II methanol (CH$_3$OH) maser lines toward the high mass star forming region NGC 6334F for the Zeeman effect. The observed spectral profiles have two prominent velocity features which can be further decomposed through Gaussian component fitting. In several of these fitted Gaussian components we find significant Zeeman detections, with $zB_{\rm los}$ in the range from 8 to 46 Hz. If the Zeeman splitting factor $z$ for the 38 GHz transitions is of the order of $\sim$1 Hz mG$^{-1}$, similar to that for several other CH$_3$OH maser lines, then magnetic fields in the regions traced by these masers would be in the range of 8-46 mG. Such magnetic field values in high mass star forming regions agree with those detected in the better-known 6.7 GHz Class II CH$_3$OH maser line. Since Class II CH$_3$OH masers are radiatively pumped close to the protostar and likely occur in the accretion disk or the interface between the disk and outflow regions, such fields likely have significant impact on the dynamics of these disks., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted

The MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) has observed 391 telescope pointings at L-band (900 - 1670 MHz) at $\delta\lesssim$ $+20\deg$. We present radio continuum images and a catalog of 495,325 (240,321) radio sources detected at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) $>$5 over an area of 2289 deg$^2$ (1132 deg$^2$) at 1006 MHz (1381 MHz). Every MALS pointing contains a central bright radio source ($S_{1\,\mathrm{GHz}} \gtrsim 0.2$ Jy). The median spatial resolution is $12^{\prime\prime}$ ($8^{\prime\prime}$). The median rms noise away from the pointing center is 25 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (22 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$) and is within $\sim$ 15% of the achievable theoretical sensitivity. The flux density scale ratio and astrometric accuracy deduced from multiply observed sources in MALS are less than 1% (8% scatter) and $1^{\prime\prime}$, respectively. Through comparisons with NVSS and FIRST at 1.4 GHz, we establish the catalog's accuracy in the flux density scale and astrometry to be better than 6% (15% scatter) and $0.8^{\prime\prime}$, respectively. The median flux density offset is higher (9%) for an alternate beam model based on holographic measurements. The MALS radio source counts at 1.4 GHz are in agreement with literature. We estimate spectral indices ($\alpha$) of a subset of 125,621 sources (SNR$>$8), confirm the flattening of spectral indices with decreasing flux density and identify 140 ultra steep-spectrum ($\alpha<-1.3$) sources as prospective high-$z$ radio galaxies ($z>2$). We have identified 1308 variable and 122 transient radio sources comprising primarily of AGN that demonstrate long-term (26 years) variability in their observed flux densities. The number counts of homogeneous samples of radio sources are a tried and true method of probing the large scale structure of the Universe, as most radio sources outside the galactic plane are at cosmological distances. As such they are expected to trace the cosmic radio dipole, an anisotropy analogous to the dipole seen in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Results have shown that although the cosmic radio dipole matches the direction of the CMB dipole, it has a significantly larger amplitude. This result challenges our assumption of the Universe being isotropic, which can have large repercussions for the current cosmological paradigm. Though significant measurements have been made, sensitivity to the radio dipole is generally hampered by systematic effects that can cause large biases in the measurement. Here we assess these systematics with data from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS). We present the analysis of ten MALS pointings, focusing on systematic effects that could lead to an inhomogeneous catalogue. We describe the calibration and creation of full band continuum images and catalogues, producing a combined catalogue containing 16,313 sources and covering 37.5 square degrees of sky down to a sensitivity of 10 $\mu$Jy/beam. We measure the completeness, purity, and flux recovery statistics for these catalogues using simulated data. We investigate different source populations in the catalogues by looking at flux densities and spectral indices, and how they might influence source counts. Using the noise characteristics of the pointings, we find global measures that can be used to correct for the incompleteness of the catalogue, producing corrected number counts down to 100 - 200 $\mu$Jy. We show that we can homogenise the catalogues and properly account for systematic effects. The BL Lac PKS 1413+135 was observed by the Large Survey Project "MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey" (MALS) in the L-band, at 1139 MHz and 1293-1379 MHz, targeting the HI and OH lines in absorption at z = 0.24671. The radio continuum is thought to come from a background object at redshift lower than 0.5, as suggested by the absence of gravitational images. The HI absorption line is detected at high signal-to-noise, with a narrow central component, and a red wing, confirming previous results. The OH 1720 MHz line is clearly detected in (maser) emission, peaking at a velocity shifted by -10 to -15 km/s with respect to the HI peak. The 1612 MHz line is lost due to radio interferences. The OH 1667 MHz main line is tentatively detected in absorption, but not the 1665 MHz one. Over 30 years, a high variability is observed in optical depths, due to the rapid changes of the line of sight, caused by the superluminal motions of the radio knots. The HI line has varied by 20 per cent in depth, while the OH-1720 MHz depth has varied by a factor 4. The position of the central velocity and the widths also varied. The absorbing galaxy is an early-type spiral (maybe S0) seen edge-on, with a prominent dust lane, covering the whole disk. Given the measured mass concentration, and the radio continuum size at centimeter wavelengths (100 mas corresponding to 400 pc at z = 0.25), the width of absorption lines from the nuclear regions are expected up to 250 km/S. The narrowness of the observed lines (< 15 km/s) suggest that the absorption comes from an outer gas ring, as frequently observed in S0 galaxies. The millimetric lines are even narrower (< 1 km/s), which corresponds to the continuum size restricted to the core. The core source is covered by individual 1 pc molecular clouds, of column density a few 10^22 cm-2, which is compatible with the gas screen detected in X-rays., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A

We present the analysis of $\sim 100$pc-scale compact radio continuum sources detected in 63 local (Ultra) Luminous Infrared Galaxies (U/LIRGs; $L_{\rm IR} \ge 10^{11} L_\odot$), using FWHM $\lesssim 0''.1 - 0''.2$ resolution 15 and 33 GHz observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We identify a total of 133 compact radio sources with effective radii of 8 - 170pc, which are classified into four main categories -- "AGN" (AGN), "AGN/SBnuc" (AGN-starburst composite nucleus), "SBnuc" (starburst nucleus) and "SF" (star-forming clumps) -- based on ancillary datasets and the literature. We find that "AGN" and "AGN/SBnuc" more frequently occur in late-stage mergers and have up to 3 dex higher 33 GHz luminosities and surface densities compared with "SBnuc" and "SF", which may be attributed to extreme nuclear starburst and/or AGN activity in the former. Star formation rates (SFRs) and surface densities ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) are measured for "SF" and "SBnuc" using both the total 33 GHz continuum emission (SFR $\sim 0.14 - 13$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \sim 13 - 1600$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$) and the thermal free-free emission from HII regions (median SFR$_{\rm th} \sim 0.4$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR_{th}} \sim 44$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$). These values are 1 - 2 dex higher than those measured for similar-sized clumps in nearby normal (non-U/LIRGs). The latter also have much flatter median 15 - 33 GHz spectral index ($\sim -0.08$) compared with "SBnuc" and "SF" ($\sim -0.46$), which may reflect higher non-thermal contribution from supernovae and/or ISM densities in local U/LIRGs that directly result from and/or lead to their extreme star-forming activities on 100\,pc scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) observations of the HI gas in the Klemola31 galaxy group ($z=0.029$), located along the line of sight to the radio-loud quasar PKS2020-370 ($z=1.048$). Four galaxies of the group are detected in HI emission, and HI absorption is also detected in front of PKS2020-370 in Klemola31A. The emission and absorption are somewhat compensating on the line of sight of the quasar, and the derived column density of the absorption appears under-estimated, with respect to the neighbouring emission. A symmetric tilted-ring model of Klemola31A, assuming the absorbing gas in regular rotation in the plane, yields a rather high spin temperature of 530K. An alternative interpretation is that the absorbing gas is extra-planar, which will also account for its non-circular motion. The NaI/CaII ratio also suggests that the absorbing gas is unrelated to cold HI disk. Two of the galaxies in the Klemola group are interacting with a small companion, and reveal typical tidal tails, and velocity perturbations. Only one of the galaxies, ESO400-13, reveals a strong HI deficiency, and a characteristic ram-pressure stripping, with a total asymmetry in the distribution of its gas. Since a small galaxy group as Klemola31 is not expected to host a dense intra-group gas, this galaxy must be crossing the group at a very high velocity, mostly in the sky plane., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted in MNRAS (minor corrections)

High mass stars play an important role in the Interstellar Medium, but much remains to be known about their formation. Class I methanol masers may be unique tracers of an early stage of high mass star formation, and a better understanding of such masers will allow them to be used as more effective probes of the high mass star forming process. We present an investigation of the long-term variability of Class I methanol masers at 44 GHz toward the high mass star forming region DR21(OH). We compare observations taken in 2017 to 2012 and also to 2001 data from the literature. A total of 57 maser spots were found in the 2017 data, with center velocities ranging between -8.65 km/s to +2.56 km/s. The masers are arranged in a western and an eastern lobe with two arcs in each lobe that look like bowshocks, consistent with previous observations. The general trend is an increase in intensity from 2001 to 2012, and a decrease from 2012 to 2017. Variability appears to be more prevalent in the inner arc of the western lobe than in the outer arc. We speculate that this may be a consequence of episodic accretion, in which a later accretion event has resulted in ejection of material whose shock reached the inner arc at some point in time after 2001. We present optical spectroscopic and milli-arcsecond scale radio continuum observations of the quasar M1540-1453 ($z_{em}$ = 2.104$\pm$0.002) that shows associated HI 21-cm absorption at $z_{abs}$ = 2.1139. At sub-kpc scales, the powerful radio source with 1.4 GHz luminosity of $5.9\times10^{27}$ WHz$^{-1}$ shows Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class I morphology caused by the interaction with dense gas within 70 pc from the AGN. Interestingly, while there are indications for the presence of absorption from low-ionization species like FeII, SiII and SiIII in the optical spectrum, the expected strong damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption is not detected at the redshift of the HI 21-cm absorber. In comparison to typical high-$z$ quasars, the Ly$\alpha$ emission line is much narrower. The `ghostly' nature of the HI Ly$\alpha$ absorber partially covering the broad line region of extent 0.05 pc and the detection of widespread HI 21-cm absorption covering the diffuse radio source (extent $>$425 pc) imply the presence of a large clumpy HI halo -- which may have been blown by the jet-ISM interaction. Further observations are needed to confirm the `ghostly' nature of the Ly$\alpha$ absorber, and obtain a better understanding of the role played by the jet-ISM interaction in shaping the radio morphology of this powerful AGN. Radio Astronomy is undergoing a renaissance, as the next-generation of instruments provides a massive leap forward in collecting area and therefore raw sensitivity. However, to achieve this theoretical level of sensitivity in the science data products we need to address the much more pernicious systematic effects, which are the true limitation. These become all the more significant when we consider that much of the time used by survey instruments, such as the SKA, will be dedicated to deep surveys. CHILES is a deep HI survey of the COSMOS field, with 1,000 hours of VLA time. We present our approach for creating the image cubes from the first Epoch, with discussions of the methods and quantification of the data quality from 946 to 1420MHz -- a redshift range of 0.5 to 0. We layout the problems we had to solve and describe how we tackled them. These are of importance as CHILES is the first deep wideband multi-epoch HI survey and it has relevance for ongoing and future surveys. We focus on the accumulated systematic errors in the imaging, as the goal is to deliver a high-fidelity image that is only limited by the random thermal errors. To understand and correct these systematic effects we ideally manage them in the domain in which they arise, and that is predominately the visibility domain. CHILES is a perfect test bed for many of the issues we can expect for deep imaging with the SKA or ngVLA and we discuss the lessons we have learned., Comment: Accepted in AJ

We present results of an optical spectroscopic survey using SALT and NOT to build a WISE mid-infrared color-based, dust-unbiased sample of powerful radio-bright ($>$200 mJy at 1.4 GHz) AGN for the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS). Our sample has 250 AGN (median $z=1.8$) showing emission lines, 26 with no emission lines, and 27 without optical counterparts. Overall, our sample is fainter ($\Delta i$=0.6 mag) and redder ($\Delta(g-i)$=0.2 mag) than radio-selected quasars, and representative of fainter quasar population detected in optical surveys. About 20% of the sources are narrow line AGN (NLAGN) $-$ 65% of these, at $z < 0.5$ are galaxies without strong nuclear emission, and 10% at $z>1.9$, have emission line ratios similar to radio galaxies. The farthest NLAGN in our sample is M1513$-$2524 ($z_{em}=3.132$), and the largest (size$\sim$330 kpc) is M0909$-$3133 ($z_{em}=0.884$). We discuss in detail 110 AGN at $1.9 < z < 3.5$. Despite representing the radio loudest quasars (median $R$=3685), their Eddington ratios are similar to the SDSS quasars having lower $R$. We detect 4 CIV BALQSOs, all among AGN with least $R$, and highest black hole masses and Eddington ratios. The BAL detection rate ($4^{+3}_{-2}$%) is consistent with that seen in extremely powerful ($L_{1.4GHz}>10^{25}$ WHz$^{-1}$) quasars. Using optical light-curves, radio polarization and $\gamma$-ray detections, we identify 7 high-probability BL Lacs. Nuclear rings are excellent laboratories for studying intense star formation. We present results from a study of nuclear star-forming rings in five nearby normal galaxies from the Star Formation in Radio Survey (SFRS) and four local LIRGs from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) at sub-kpc resolutions using VLA high-frequency radio continuum observations. We find that nuclear ring star formation (NRSF) contributes 49 - 60\% of the total star formation of the LIRGs, compared to 7 - 40\% for the normal galaxies. We characterize a total of 58 individual star-forming regions in these rings, and find that with measured sizes of 10 - 200 pc, NRSF regions in the LIRGs have SFR and $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ up to 1.7 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ and 402 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$, respectively, which are about 10 times higher than NRSF regions in the normal galaxies with similar sizes, and comparable to lensed high-$z$ star-forming regions. At $\sim 100 - 300$ pc scales, we estimate low contributions ($< 50\%$) of thermal free-free emission to total radio continuum emission at 33 GHz in the NRSF regions in the LIRGs, but large variations possibly exist at smaller physical scales. Finally, using archival sub-kpc resolution CO (J=1-0) data of nuclear rings in the normal galaxies and NGC 7469 (LIRG), we find a large scatter in gas depletion times at similar molecular gas surface densities, which tentatively points to a multi-modal star formation relation on sub-kpc scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from a spectroscopically blind search for associated and intervening HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption lines towards 88 AGNs at $2\le z\le5$ using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The sample of AGNs with 1.4 GHz spectral luminosity in the range, $10^{27 - 29.3}$ W/Hz, is selected using mid-infrared colors and closely resembles the distribution of the underlying quasar population. The search for associated or proximate absorption, defined to be within 3000 km/s of the AGN redshift, led to one HI 21-cm absorption detection (M1540-1453; $z_{abs}$= 2.1139). This is only the fourth known absorption at $z>2$. The detection rate ($1.6^{+3.8}_{-1.4}$%) suggests low covering factor of cold neutral medium (CNM; T$\sim$100 K) associated with these powerful AGNs. The intervening absorption line search, with a sensitivity to detect CNM in damped Ly$\alpha$ systems (DLAs), has comoving absorption path lengths of $\Delta$X = 130.1 and 167.7 for HI and OH, respectively. The corresponding number of absorber per unit comoving path lengths are $\le$0.014 and $\le$0.011, respectively. The former is at least 4.5 times lower than that of DLAs and consistent with the CNM cross-section estimated using H$_2$ and CI absorbers at $z>2$. Our AGN sample is optically fainter compared to the quasars used to search for DLAs in the past. In our optical spectra obtained using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT), we detect 5 intervening (redshift path$\sim9.3$) and 2 proximate DLAs. This is slightly excessive compared to the statistics based on optically selected quasars. The Frontier Fields project is an observational campaign targeting six galaxy clusters, with the intention of using the magnification provided by gravitational lensing to study galaxies that are extremely faint or distant. We used the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 3 and 6 GHz to observe three Frontier Fields: MACSJ0416.1$-$2403 ($z$ = 0.396), MACSJ0717.5+3745 ($z$ = 0.545), and MACSJ1149.5+2223 ($z$ = 0.543). The images reach noise levels of $\sim$1 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ with sub-arcsecond resolution ($\sim$2.5 kpc at $z$ = 3), providing a high-resolution view of high-$z$ star-forming galaxies that is unbiased by dust obscuration. We generate dual-frequency continuum images at two different resolutions per band, per cluster, and derive catalogs totalling 1966 compact radio sources. Components within the areas of Hubble Space Telescope and Subaru observations are cross-matched, providing host galaxy identifications for 1296 of them. We detect 13 moderately-lensed (2.1 $<$ $\mu$ $<$ 6.5) sources, one of which has a demagnified peak brightness of 0.9 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$, making it a candidate for the faintest radio source ever detected. There are 66 radio sources exhibiting complex morphologies, and 58 of these have host galaxy identifications. We reveal that MACSJ1149.5+2223 is not a cluster with a double relic, as the western candidate relic is resolved as a double-lobed radio galaxy associated with a foreground elliptical at $z$ = 0.24. To investigate the growth history of galaxies, we measure the rest-frame radio, ultraviolet (UV), and optical sizes of 98 radio-selected, star-forming galaxies (SFGs) distributed over $0.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ and median stellar mass of $\log(M_\star/ \rm M_\odot)\approx10.4$. We compare the size of galaxy stellar disks, traced by rest-frame optical emission, relative to the overall extent of star formation activity that is traced by radio continuum emission. Galaxies in our sample are identified in three Hubble Frontier Fields: MACSJ0416.1$-$2403, MACSJ0717.5+3745, and MACSJ1149.5+2223. Radio continuum sizes are derived from 3 GHz and 6 GHz radio images ($\lesssim 0$''$.6$ resolution, $\approx0.9\, \rm \mu Jy\, beam^{-1}$ noise level) from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. Rest-frame UV and optical sizes are derived using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and the ACS and WFC3 instruments. We find no clear dependence between the 3 GHz radio size and stellar mass of SFGs, which contrasts with the positive correlation between the UV/optical size and stellar mass of galaxies. Focusing on SFGs with $\log(M_\star/\rm M_\odot)>10$, we find that the radio/UV/optical emission tends to be more compact in galaxies with high star-formation rates ($\rm SFR\gtrsim 100\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$), suggesting that a central, compact starburst (and/or an Active Galactic Nucleus) resides in the most luminous galaxies of our sample. We also find that the physical radio/UV/optical size of radio-selected SFGs with $\log(M_\star/\rm M_\odot)>10$ increases by a factor of $1.5-2$ from $z\approx 3$ to $z\approx0.3$, yet the radio emission remains two-to-three times more compact than that from the UV/optical. These findings indicate that these massive, {radio-selected} SFGs at $0.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ tend to harbor centrally enhanced star formation activity relative to their outer-disks., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Large Survey Project (LSP) "MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey" (MALS) is a blind HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption line survey in the L- and UHF-bands, with the primary goal to better determine the occurrence of atomic and molecular gas in the circum-galactic and inter-galactic medium, and its redshift evolution. Here we present the first results using the UHF-band, obtained towards the strongly lensed radio source PKS1830, detecting absorption in the lens galaxy. With merely 90min of data acquired on-source for science verification and processed using the Automated Radio Telescope Imaging Pipeline (ARTIP), we detect in absorption the known HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm main lines at z=0.89 at an unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio (4000 in the continuum, with 6km/s channels). For the first time we report the detection at z=0.89 of OH satellite lines, so far not detected at z $>$ 0.25. We decompose the OH lines into a thermal and a stimulated contribution, where the 1612 and 1720MHz lines are conjugate. The total OH 1720MHz emission line luminosity is 6100Lsun. This is the most luminous known 1720MHz maser line. The absorption components of the different images of the background source sample different light paths in the lensing galaxy, and their weights in the total absorption spectrum are expected to vary in time, on daily and monthly time scales. We compare our normalized spectra with those obtained more than 20 yrs ago, and find no variation. We interpret the absorption spectra with the help of a lens galaxy model, derived from an N-body hydro-dynamical simulation, with a morphology similar to its optical HST image. It is possible to reproduce the observations without invoking any central gas outflows. There are, however, distinct and faint high-velocity features, most likely high-velocity clouds. We have performed a spectral decomposition to search for dual active galactic nuclei (DAGNs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars with $z<0.25$. Potential DAGN candidates are searched by referencing velocity offsets and spectral shapes of double-peaked [O III] lines of known DAGNs. Out of 1271 SDSS quasars, we have identified 77 DAGN candidates. Optical and mid-infrared diagnostic diagrams are used to investigate the ionizing source in the DAGN candidates. The optical diagnostic analysis suggests 93\% of them are powered by AGNs, and mid-infrared diagnostic analysis suggests 97\% are powered by AGNs. About 1/3 of the SDSS images of the DAGN candidates show signs of tidal interaction, but we are unable to identify double nuclei in most of them due to the low spatial resolution of the archival imaging data available for most of the sample. The radio-loud fraction of the DAGN candidates ($\sim$10\%) is similar to that of typical AGNs., Comment: Ap.J. in press

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations towards NGC 4725 B, a discrete, compact, optically-faint region within the star-forming disk of the nearby galaxy NGC 4725 that exhibits strong anomalous microwave emission (AME). These new ALMA data include continuum observations centered at 92, 133, 203, and 221 GHz accompanied by spectral observations of the $^{12}$CO ($J=2\rightarrow1$) line. NGC 4725 B is detected in the continuum at all frequencies, although the detection at 203 GHz is marginal. While molecular gas is not detected at the exact location of NGC 4725 B, there is molecular gas in the immediate vicinity (i.e., $\lesssim 100$ pc) along with associated diffuse 8 $\mu$m emission. When combined with existing Very Large Array continuum data at 1.5, 3, 5.5, 9, 14, 22, 33, and 44 GHz, the spectrum is best fit by a combination of AME, synchrotron, and free-free emission that is free-free absorbed below $\sim6$ GHz. Given the strength of the AME, there is surprisingly no indication of millimeter dust emission associated with NGC 4725 B on $\lesssim$6\arcsec~spatial scales at the sensitivity of the ALMA interferometric data. Based on the properties of the nearest molecular gas complex and the inferred star formation rate, NGC 4725 B is consistent with being an extremely young ($\sim 3-5$ Myr) massive ($\lesssim 10^{5} M_{\odot}$) cluster that is undergoing active cluster feedback. However, the lack of millimeter thermal dust emission is difficult to reconcile with a spinning dust origin of the 30 GHz emission. We present details of the Automated Radio Telescope Imaging Pipeline (ARTIP) and results of a sensitive blind search for HI and OH absorbers at $z<0.4$ and $z<0.7$, respectively. ARTIP is written in Python 3.6, extensively uses the Common Astronomy Software Application (CASA) tools and tasks, and is designed to enable the geographically-distributed MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) team to collaboratively process large volumes of radio interferometric data. We apply it to the first MALS dataset obtained using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope and 32K channel mode of the correlator. With merely 40 minutes on target, we present the most sensitive spectrum of PKS1830-211 ever obtained and characterize the known HI ($z=0.19$) and OH ($z=0.89$) absorbers. We further demonstrate ARTIP's capabilities to handle realistic observing scenarios by applying it to a sample of 72 bright radio sources observed with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) to blindly search for HI and OH absorbers. We estimate the numbers of HI and OH absorbers per unit redshift to be $n_{21}(z\sim0.18)<$0.14 and $n_{\rm OH}(z\sim0.40)<$0.12, respectively, and constrain the cold gas covering factor of galaxies at large impact parameters (50 kpc $<\rho<$ 150 kpc) to be less than 0.022. Due to the small redshift path, $\Delta z\sim$13 for HI with column density$>5.4\times10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$, the survey has probed only the outskirts of star-forming galaxies at $\rho>30$ kpc. MALS with the expected $\Delta z\sim10^{3-4}$ will overcome this limitation and provide stringent constraints on the cold gas fraction of galaxies in diverse environments over $0

We present 3, 15, and 33 GHz imaging towards galaxy nuclei and extranuclear star-forming regions using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array as part of the Star Formation in Radio Survey. With $3-33$ GHz radio spectra, we measured the spectral indices and corresponding thermal (free-free) emission fractions for a sample of 335 discrete regions having significant detections in at least two radio bands. After removing 14 likely background galaxies, we find that the median thermal fraction at 33 GHz is $92 \pm 0.8\%$ with a median absolute deviation of $11\%$, when a two-component power-law model is adopted to fit the radio spectrum. Limiting the sample to 238 sources that are confidently identified as star-forming regions, and not affected by potential AGN contamination (i.e., having galactocentric radii $r_{\rm G} \geq 250$ pc), results in a median thermal fraction of $93 \pm 0.8 \%$ with a median absolute deviation of $10\%$. We further measure the thermal fraction at 33 GHz for 163 regions identified at 7" resolution to be $94 \pm 0.8 \%$ with a median absolute deviation of $8\%$. Together, these results confirm that free-free emission dominates the radio spectra of star-forming regions on scales up to $\sim$500 pc in normal star-forming galaxies. We additionally find a factor of $\sim$1.6 increase in the scatter of the measured spectral index and thermal fraction distributions as a function of decreasing galactocentric radius. This trend is likely reflective of the continuous star-formation activity occurring in the galaxy centers, resulting a larger contribution of diffuse nonthermal emission relative to star-forming regions in the disk., Comment: 57 pages, 23 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

We report the detection of a circular polarization signature in the Stokes $V$ profile of a 25 GHz Class I CH$_3$OH maser toward the high mass star forming region OMC-1. Such a feature usually constitutes a detection of the Zeeman effect. If due to a magnetic field in OMC-1, this would represent the first detection and discovery of the Zeeman effect in the 25 GHz Class I CH$_3$OH maser. The feature in Stokes $V$ is detected in two observations with different angular resolutions taken eight years apart with the Very Large Array (VLA); for our 2009 D-configuration observations, the fitted value for $z B_\text{los}$ is $152 \pm 12$ Hz, where $z$ is the Zeeman splitting factor and $B_\text{los}$ is the line-of-sight magnetic field. For our 2017 C-configuration observations, the fitted value for $zB_\text{los} = 149 \pm 19~$Hz, likely for the same maser spot. These correspond to $B_\text{los}$ in the range 171-214 mG, depending on which hyperfine transition is responsible for the maser line. While these $B_\text{los}$ values are high, they are not implausible. If the magnetic field increases in proportion to the molecular hydrogen density in shocked regions, then our detected fields predict values for the pre-shock magnetic field that are in agreement with observations. With $B_\text{los}$ =171-214 mG, the magnetic energy in the post-shocked regions where these 25 GHz Class I CH$_3$OH masers occur would dominate over the kinetic energy density and be at least of the order of the pressure in the shock, implying that the magnetic field would exert significant influence over the dynamics of these regions., Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present neutral hydrogen (HI) and ionized hydrogen (H${\alpha}$) observations of ten galaxies out to a redshift of 0.1. The HI observations are from the first epoch (178 hours) of the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). Our sample is HI biased and consists of ten late-type galaxies with HI masses that range from $1.8\times10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$ to $1.1\times10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. We find that although the majority of galaxies show irregularities in the morphology and kinematics, they generally follow the scaling relations found in larger samples. We find that the HI and H${\alpha}$ velocities reach the flat part of the rotation curve. We identify the large-scale structure in the nearby CHILES volume using DisPerSE with the spectroscopic catalog from SDSS. We explore the gaseous properties of the galaxies as a function of location in the cosmic web. We also compare the angular momentum vector (spin) of the galaxies to the orientation of the nearest cosmic web filament. We report the results of an investigation to determine the nature of the offset active galactic nucleus (AGN) found in the source CXO J101527.2+625911. Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray observatory data had suggested that the offset AGN, which has an angular separation of only 0\farcs26 from the center of the host galaxy, is a recoiled Super Massive Black Hole (rSMBH). We carried out high angular resolution observations with both the VLBA (1.54 GHz) and the VLA (10.0 GHz \& 33.0 GHz) and detected a single compact radio source in the center of the host galaxy, with no radio continuum emission associated with the offset AGN. The detected radio source has a high brightness temperature value of $T_b=7.2\times10^{7}$ K, indicating that the radio emission is associated with an AGN. Furthermore, we present the decomposition of high-resolution KECK spectra of the [O III]5007\AA line into two narrow emission line components, which is a characteristic sign of a dual black hole system. These new radio and optical wavelength results suggest that CXO J101527.2+625911 is the host of a dual black hole system rather than a rSMBH., Comment: ApJ accepted

We present the first results of a high-resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) imaging survey of luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). From the full sample of 68 galaxies, we have selected 25 LIRGs that show resolved extended emission at sufficient sensitivity to image individual regions of star-formation activity beyond the nucleus.~With wideband radio continuum observations, which sample the frequency range from $3-33$ GHz, we have made extinction-free measurements of the luminosities and spectral indicies for a total of 48 individual star-forming regions identified as having de-projected galactocentric radii ($r_{G}$) that lie outside the 13.2$\mu$m core of the galaxy.~The median $3-33$ GHz spectral index and 33 GHz thermal fraction measured for these "extranuclear" regions is $-0.51 \pm 0.13$ and $65 \pm 11\%$ respectively.~These values are consistent with measurements made on matched spatial scales in normal star-forming galaxies, and suggests that these regions are more heavily-dominated by thermal free-free emission relative to the centers of local ULIRGs.~Further, we find that the median star-formation rate derived for these regions is $\sim 1 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and when we place them on the sub-galactic star-forming main sequence of galaxies (SFMS), we find they are offset from their host galaxies' globally-averaged specific star-formation rates (sSFRs).~We conclude that while nuclear starburst activity drives LIRGs above the SFMS, extranuclear star-formation still proceeds in a more extreme fashion relative to what is seen in local spiral galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 9 Figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

It remains unclear what sets the efficiency with which molecular gas transforms into stars. Here we present a new VLA map of the spiral galaxy M51 in 33GHz radio continuum, an extinction-free tracer of star formation, at 3" scales (~100pc). We combined this map with interferometric PdBI/NOEMA observations of CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) at matched resolution for three regions in M51 (central molecular ring, northern and southern spiral arm segments). While our measurements roughly fall on the well-known correlation between total infrared and HCN luminosity, bridging the gap between Galactic and extragalactic observations, we find systematic offsets from that relation for different dynamical environments probed in M51, e.g. the southern arm segment is more quiescent due to low star formation efficiency (SFE) of the dense gas, despite having a high dense gas fraction. Combining our results with measurements from the literature at 100pc scales, we find that the SFE of the dense gas and the dense gas fraction anti-correlate and correlate, respectively, with the local stellar mass surface density. This is consistent with previous kpc-scale studies. In addition, we find a significant anti-correlation between the SFE and velocity dispersion of the dense gas. Finally, we confirm that a correlation also holds between star formation rate surface density and the dense gas fraction, but it is not stronger than the correlation with dense gas surface density. Our results are hard to reconcile with models relying on a universal gas density threshold for star formation and suggest that turbulence and galactic dynamics play a major role in setting how efficiently dense gas converts into stars., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Absorption lines in front of distant quasars are quite rare in the millimeter domain. They can however bring a very useful and complementary information to emission lines. We report here the detection with NOEMA of CO(1-0) and CN(1-0) lines in absorption, and confirmation of CO emission in the quasar/galaxy pair Q0248+430/G0248+430. The system G0248+430 corresponds to two merging galaxies (a Seyfert and a LINER) at z=0.0519 with a tidal tail just on the line of sight to the background quasar Q0248+430 at z = 1.313. Optical (CaII, NaI), HI-21cm and OH-1667 MHz absorption lines associated with the tidal tail of the foreground system have previously been detected toward the quasar, while four CO lines at different rotation J levels have been detected in emission from the foreground galaxies. New HI 21-cm line observations with the upgraded GMRT array are presented. We present high angular resolution imaging ($23.9 \times 11.3$ mas, $138.6 \times 65.5$ pc) of the radio-loud quasar PSO~J352.4034$-$15.3373 at $z=5.84$ with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 1.54 GHz. This quasar has the highest radio-to-optical flux density ratio at such a redshift, making it the radio-loudest source known to date at $z \sim 6$. The VLBA observations presented here resolve this quasar into multiple components with an overall linear extent of 1.62 kpc ($0\rlap{.}{''}28$) and with a total flux density of $6.57 \pm 0.38$ mJy, which is about half of the emission measured at a much lower angular resolution. The morphology of the source is comparable with either a radio core with a one-sided jet, or a compact or a medium-size Symmetric Object (CSO/MSO). If the source is a CSO/MSO, and assuming an advance speed of $0.2c$, then the estimated kinematic age is $\sim 10^4$ yr., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, ApJ accepted on May 21, 2018

We present the first detection of OH absorption in diffuse gas at $z>0$, along with another eight stringent limits on OH column densities for cold atomic gas in galaxies at $0$13.6) to be $n_{\rm OH}$ = $0.008^{+0.018}_{-0.008}$ at $z\sim0.1$. Based on this we expect to detect 10$^{+20}_{-10}$ such OH absorbers from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey. Using HI 21-cm and OH 1667 MHz absorption lines detected towards Q0248+430, we estimate ($\Delta F/F$) = (5.2$\pm$4.5)$\times 10^{-6}$, where $F \equiv g_p (\alpha^2/\mu)^{1.57}$, $\alpha$ $-$ the fine structure constant, $\mu$ $-$ the electron-proton mass ratio and $g_p$ $-$ the proton gyromagnetic ratio. This corresponds to $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$($z=0.0519$) = (1.7 $\pm$ 1.4)$\times 10^{-6}$, which is among the stringent constraints on the fractional variation of $\alpha$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for Publication in ApJ Letters

We discuss the nature of a discrete, compact radio source (NGC 4725 B) located $\approx$1.9 kpc from the nucleus in the nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 4725, which we believe to be a new detection of extragalactic Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). Based on detections at 3, 15, 22, 33, and 44 GHz, NGC 4725 B is a $\mu$Jy radio source peaking at $\approx$33 GHz. While the source is not identified in $BVRI$ photometry, we detect counterparts in the mid-infrared $Spitzer$/IRAC bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 $\mu$m) that appear to be associated with dust emission in the central region of NGC 4725. Consequently, we conclude that NGC 4725 B is a new detection of AME, and very similar to a recent detection of AME in an outer-disk star-forming region in NGC 6946. We find that models of electric dipole emission from rapidly rotating ultra-small grains are able to reproduce the radio spectrum for reasonable interstellar medium conditions. Given the lack of an optical counterpart and the shape of the radio spectrum, NGC 4725 B appears consistent with a nascent star-forming region in which young ($\lesssim 3$ Myr) massive stars are still highly enshrouded by their natal cocoons of gas and dust with insufficient supernovae occurring to produce a measurable amount of synchrotron emission., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 179 radio sources in the COSMOS field with extremely high sensitivity using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) together with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) (VLBA+GBT) at 1.4 GHz, to explore the faint radio population in the flux density regime of tens of $\mu$Jy. Here, the identification of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is based on the VLBI detection of the source, i.e., it is independent of X-ray or infrared properties. The milli-arcsecond resolution provided by the VLBI technique implies that the detected sources must be compact and have large brightness temperatures, and therefore they are most likely AGN (when the host galaxy is located at z$\geq$0.1). On the other hand, this technique allows us to only positively identify when a radio-active AGN is present, i.e., we cannot affirm that there is no AGN when the source is not detected. For this reason, the number of identified AGN using VLBI should be always treated as a lower limit. We present a catalogue containing the 35 radio sources detected with the VLBA+GBT, 10 of which were not previously detected using only the VLBA. We have constructed the radio source counts at 1.4 GHz using the samples of the VLBA and VLBA+GBT detected sources of the COSMOS field to determine a lower limit for the AGN contribution to the faint radio source population. We found an AGN contribution of >40-75% at flux density levels between 150 $\mu$Jy and 1 mJy. This flux density range is characterised by the upturn of the Euclidean-normalised radio source counts, which implies a contribution of a new population. This result supports the idea that the sub-mJy radio population is composed of a significant fraction of radio-emitting AGN, rather than solely by star-forming galaxies, in agreement with previous studies., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. We present 33 GHz imaging for 112 pointings towards galaxy nuclei and extranuclear star-forming regions at $\approx$2" resolution using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) as part of the Star Formation in Radio Survey. A comparison with 33 GHz Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope single-dish observations indicates that the interferometric VLA observations recover $78\pm4 %$ of the total flux density over 25" regions ($\approx$ kpc-scales) among all fields. On these scales, the emission being resolved out is most likely diffuse non-thermal synchrotron emission. Consequently, on the $\approx30-300$ pc scales sampled by our VLA observations, the bulk of the 33 GHz emission is recovered and primarily powered by free-free emission from discrete HII regions, making it an excellent tracer of massive star formation. Of the 225 discrete regions used for aperture photometry, 162 are extranuclear (i.e., having galactocentric radii $r_{\rm G} \geq 250$ pc) and detected at $>3\sigma$ significance at 33 GHz and in H$\alpha$. Assuming a typical 33 GHz thermal fraction of 90 %, the ratio of optically-thin 33 GHz-to-uncorrected H$\alpha$ star formation rates indicate a median extinction value on $\approx30-300$ pc scales of $A_{\rm H\alpha} \approx 1.26\pm0.09$ mag with an associated median absolute deviation of 0.87 mag. We find that 10 % of these sources are "highly embedded" (i.e., $A_{\rm H\alpha}\gtrsim3.3$ mag), suggesting that on average HII regions remain embedded for $\lesssim1$ Myr. Finally, we find the median 33 GHz continuum-to-H$\alpha$ line flux ratio to be statistically larger within $r_{\rm G}<250$ pc relative the outer-disk regions by a factor of $1.82\pm0.39$, while the ratio of 33 GHz-to-24 $\mu$m flux densities are lower by a factor of $0.45\pm0.08$, which may suggest increased extinction in the central regions., Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal; v2 - corrected typos for minor axis beam sizes in tables 3 & 4. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1210.3360

Deep galaxy surveys have revealed that the global star formation rate (SFR) density in the Universe peaks at 1 < z < 2 and sharply declines towards z = 0. But a clear picture of the underlying processes, in particular the evolution of cold atomic (~100 K) and molecular gas phases, that drive such a strong evolution is yet to emerge. MALS is designed to use MeerKAT's L- and UHF-band receivers to carry out the most sensitive (N(HI)>10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$) dust-unbiased search of intervening HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption lines at 0 < z < 2. This will provide reliable measurements of the evolution of cold atomic and molecular gas cross-sections of galaxies, and unravel the processes driving the steep evolution in the SFR density. The large sample of HI and OH absorbers obtained from the survey will (i) lead to tightest constraints on the fundamental constants of physics, and (ii) be ideally suited to probe the evolution of magnetic fields in disks of galaxies via Zeeman Splitting or Rotation Measure synthesis. The survey will also provide an unbiased census of HI and OH absorbers, i.e. cold gas associated with powerful AGNs (>10$^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) at 0 < z < 2, and will simultaneously deliver a blind HI and OH emission line survey, and radio continuum survey. We study the faint radio population using wide-field very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 2865 known radio sources in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. The main objective of the project was to determine where active galactic nuclei (AGN) are present. The combination of number of sources, sensitivity, angular resolution and area covered by this project are unprecedented. We have detected 468 radio sources, expected to be AGNs, with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 1.4 GHz. This is, to date, the largest sample assembled of VLBI detected sources in the sub-mJy regime. The input sample was taken from previous observations with the Very Large Array (VLA). We present the catalogue with additional multiwavelength information. We find a detection fraction of 20%, considering only those sources from the input catalogue which were in principle detectable with the VLBA (2361). As a function of redshift, we see no evolution of the detection fraction over the redshift range 0.51.5 we find that spiral galaxies become the most prevalent (48%). We demonstrate that wide-field VLBI observations, together with new calibration methods such as multi-source self-calibration and mosaicing, result in information which is difficult or impossible to obtain otherwise., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. We present Very Large Array observations of the 33 GHz radio continuum emission from 22 local ultraluminous and luminous infrared (IR) galaxies (U/LIRGs). These observations have spatial (angular) resolutions of 30--720 pc (0.07"-0.67") in a part of the spectrum that is likely to be optically thin. This allows us to estimate the size of the energetically dominant regions. We find half-light radii from 30 pc to 1.7 kpc. The 33 GHz flux density correlates well with the IR emission, and we take these sizes as indicative of the size of the region that produces most of the energy. Combining our 33 GHz sizes with unresolved measurements, we estimate the IR luminosity and star formation rate per area, and the molecular gas surface and volume densities. These quantities span a wide range (4 dex) and include some of the highest values measured for any galaxy (e.g., $\mathrm{\Sigma_{SFR}^{33GHz} \leq 10^{4.1} M_{\odot} yr^{-1} kpc^{-2}}$). At least $13$ sources appear Compton thick ($\mathrm{N_{H}^{33GHz} \geq 10^{24} cm^{-2}}$). Consistent with previous work, contrasting these data with observations of normal disk galaxies suggests a nonlinear and likely multi-valued relation between SFR and molecular gas surface density, though this result depends on the adopted CO-to-H$_{2}$ conversion factor and the assumption that our 33 GHz sizes apply to the gas. 11 sources appear to exceed the luminosity surface density predicted for starbursts supported by radiation pressure and supernovae feedback, however we note the need for more detailed observations of the inner disk structure. U/LIRGs with higher surface brightness exhibit stronger [{\sc Cii}] 158$\mu$m deficits, consistent with the suggestion that high energy densities drive this phenomenon., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables. We report the detection of the Zeeman effect in the 44 GHz Class I methanol maser line toward the star forming region DR21(OH). In a 219 Jy/beam maser centered at an LSR velocity of 0.83 km s$^{-1}$, we find a 20-$\sigma$ detection of $zB_{\text{los}} = 53.5 \pm 2.7$ Hz. If 44 GHz methanol masers are excited at $n \sim 10^{7-8}$ cm$^{-3}$, then the $B~vs.~n^{1/2}$ relation would imply from comparison with Zeeman effect detections in the CN($1-0$) line toward DR21(OH) that magnetic fields traced by 44 GHz methanol masers in DR21(OH) should be $\sim$10 mG. Together with our detected $zB_{\text{los}} = 53.5$ Hz, this would imply that the value of the 44 GHz methanol Zeeman splitting factor $z$ is $\sim$5 Hz mG$^{-1}$. Such small values of $z$ would not be a surprise, as the methanol molecule is non paramagnetic, like H$_2$O. Empirical attempts to determine $z$, as demonstrated, are important because currently there are no laboratory measurements or theoretically calculated values of $z$ for the 44 GHz methanol transition. We present the results from our survey of HI 21-cm absorption, using GMRT, VLA and WSRT, in a sample of 55 z<0.4 galaxies towards radio sources with impact parameters (b) in the range ~0-35 kpc. In our primary sample (defined for statistical analyses) of 40 quasar-galaxy-pairs (QGPs), probed by 45 sightlines, we have found seven HI 21-cm absorption detections, two of which are reported here for the first time. Combining our primary sample with measurements having similar optical depth sensitivity ($\int\tau dv$ <= 0.3 km/s) from the literature, we find a weak anti-correlation (rank correlation coefficient = -0.20 at 2.42sigma level) between $\int\tau dv$ and b, consistent with previous literature results. The covering factor of HI 21-cm absorbers (C_21) is estimated to be 0.24 (+0.12/-0.08) at b <= 15 kpc and 0.06 (+0.09/-0.04) at b = 15-35 kpc. $\int\tau dv$ and C_21 show similar declining trend with radial distance along the galaxy's major axis and distances scaled with the effective HI radius. There is also tentative indication that most of the HI 21-cm absorbers could be co-planar with the extended HI discs. No significant dependence of $\int\tau dv$ and C_21 on galaxy luminosity, stellar mass, colour and star formation rate is found, though the HI 21-cm absorbing gas cross-section may be larger for the luminous galaxies. The higher detection rate (by a factor of ~4) of HI 21-cm absorption in z<1 DLAs compared to the QGPs indicates towards small covering factor and patchy distribution of cold gas clouds around low-z galaxies., Comment: 25 pages + 17 pages appendix, 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of CO(2-1) line emission and rest-frame 250GHz continuum emission of the Hyper-Luminous IR Galaxies (HyLIRGs) BRI1202-0725 (z=4.69) and BRI1335-0417 (z=4.41), with an angular resolution as high as 0.15". Our low order CO observations delineate the cool molecular gas, the fuel for star formation in the systems, in unprecedented detail. For BRI1202-0725, line emission is seen from both extreme starburst galaxies: the quasar host and the optically obscured submm galaxy (SMG), in addition to one of the Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies in the group. Line emission from the SMG shows an east-west extension of about 0.6". For Lyalpha-2, the CO emission is detected at the same velocity as [CII] and [NII], indicating a total gas mass ~4.0*10^10 solar masses. The CO emission from BRI1335-0417 peaks at the nominal quasar position, with a prominent northern extension (~1", a possible tidal feature). The gas depletion timescales are ~10^7 years for the three HyLIRGs, consistent with extreme starbursts, while that of Lyalpha-2 may be consistent with main sequence galaxies. We have used the Arecibo L-band Feed Array to map three regions, each of 5 square degrees, around the isolated galaxies NGC 1156, UGC 2082, and NGC 5523. In the vicinity of these galaxies we have detected two dwarf companions: one near UGC 2082, previously discovered by ALFALFA, and one near NGC 1156, discovered by this project and reported in an earlier paper. This is significantly fewer than the 15.4 $^{+1.7}_{-1.5}$ that would be expected from the field HI mass function from ALFALFA or the 8.9 $\pm$ 1.2 expected if the HI mass function from the Local Group applied in these regions. The number of dwarf companions detected is, however, consistent with a flat or declining HI mass function as seen by a previous, shallower, HI search for companions to isolated galaxies.We attribute this difference in Hi mass functions to the different environments in which they are measured. We present HI 21cm emission observations of the z ~ 0.00632 sub-damped Lyman-alpha absorber (sub-DLA) towards PG1216+069 made using the Arecibo Telescope and the Very Large Array (VLA). The Arecibo 21cm spectrum corresponds to an HI mass of ~ 3.2x10^7 solar masses, two orders of magnitude smaller than that of a typical spiral galaxy. This is surprising since in the local Universe the cross-section for absorption at high HI column densities is expected to be dominated by spirals. The 21cm emission detected in the VLA spectral cube has a low signal-to-noise ratio, and represents only half the total flux seen at Arecibo. Emission from three other sources is detected in the VLA observations, with only one of these sources having an optical counterpart. This group of HI sources appears to be part of complex "W", believed to lie in the background of the Virgo cluster. While several HI cloud complexes have been found in and around the Virgo cluster, it is unclear whether the ram pressure and galaxy harassment processes that are believed to be responsible for the creation of such clouds in a cluster environment are relevant at the location of this cloud complex. The extremely low metallicity of the gas, ~ 1/40 solar, also makes it unlikely that the sub-DLA consists of material that has been stripped from a galaxy. Thus, while our results have significantly improved our understanding of the host of this sub-DLA, the origin of the gas cloud remains a mystery, Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using long-slit optical spectra obtained with the 2-m telescope at IUCAA Girawali Observatory, we show that the radio source J094221.98+062335.2 (z=0.123) is associated with a galaxy pair undergoing a major merger. Its companion is a normal star-forming galaxy infalling with a velocity of 185 km/s at a projected separation of 4.8 kpc. Using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) we detect a strong HI 21-cm absorption at the systemic redshift of the radio galaxy with N(HI)~9x10^21 cm^{-2} for an assumed spin-temperature of 100 K. Such a strong HI 21-cm absorption is rare and has been seen only in a few compact radio sources associated with similar merging galaxy pairs. Milliarcsecond resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations resolve the radio source into a compact symmetric object with the hotspot separation of 89 pc. The 21-cm absorption is detected in the VLBA spectra towards both the radio lobes albeit with a strong optical depth gradient. We show that the strong 21-cm absorption is consistent with it being arising from a clumpy circumnuclear disk/torus. We also detect two weaker absorption lines redshifted with respect to the radio source in the WSRT/GMRT spectrum. They probably represent cold (i.e. T< 10^4 K) HI gas falling into the radio source. The presence of high concentration of HI gas in the circumnuclear regions and signature of infalling cold gas allows us to conjecture that the young radio source may have been triggered by the gas infall due to the ongoing merger., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of a search for giant radio galaxies (GRGs) with a projected largest linear size in excess of 1 Mpc. We designed a computational algorithm to identify contiguous emission regions, large and elongated enough to serve as GRG candidates, and applied it to the entire 1.4-GHz NRAO VLA Sky survey (NVSS). In a subsequent visual inspection of 1000 such regions we discovered 15 new GRGs, as well as many other candidate GRGs, some of them previously reported, for which no redshift was known. Our follow-up spectroscopy of 25 of the brighter hosts using two 2.1-m telescopes in Mexico, and four fainter hosts with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), yielded another 24 GRGs. We present a detailed analysis of a H2-bearing metal-rich sub-damped Lyman-alpha system at zabs = 0.10115 towards the radio-loud quasar J0441-4313, at a projected separation of ~7.6 kpc from a star-forming galaxy. The H2, C I and Na I absorption are much stronger in the redder of the two components seen in the Hubble Space Telescope / Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectrum. The best single component fit to the strong H2 component gives log N(H2) = 16.61 +/- 0.05. However, possible hidden saturation in the medium resolution spectrum can allow for log N(H2) to be as high as 18.9. The rotational excitation temperature of H2 in this component is 133 +33/-22 K. Photoionization models suggest 30-80% of the total N(H I) is associated with the strong H2 component, that has a density <= 100 cm^-3 and is subject to a radiation field that is <= 0.5 times the Galactic mean field. The Very Large Baseline Array 1.4 GHz continuum image of the radio source contains only 27% of the arcsecond scale emission. Using a previously published spectrum, no 21-cm absorption is found to be associated with the strong H2 component. This suggests that either the N(H I) associated with this component is <= 50% of the total N(H I) or the gas covering factor is <= 0.27. This is consistent with the results of the photoionization model that uses UV radiation due to stars in the associated galaxy. The 21-cm absorption previously reported from the weaker H2 component suggests a spin temperature of <= 90 K, at odds with the weakness of H2, C I and Na I absorption in this component. We present recent results from our searches of 21-cm absorption using GBT, GMRT, VLBA and WSRT to trace the evolution of cold gas in galaxies. Using ~130 sight lines with 21-cm absorption measurements, we find that within the measurement uncertainty, the 21-cm detection rate in strong MgII systems is constant over 0.52 DLAs with both 21-cm and H$_2$ (another tracer of cold gas) absorption measurements, we report two new H$_2$ detections and find that in 8/13 cases neither 21-cm nor H$_2$ is detected. This confirms that the HI gas in z>2 DLAs is predominantly warm. Interestingly, there are two cases where 21-cm absorption is not detected despite the presence of H$_2$ with evidence for the presence of cold gas. This can be explained if H$_2$ components seen in DLA are compact (<15 pc) and contain <10% of the total N(HI). We report results from a programme aimed at investigating the temperature of neutral gas in high-redshift damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs). This involved (1) HI 21cm absorption studies of a large DLA sample, (2) VLBI studies to measure the low-frequency quasar core fractions, and (3) optical/ultraviolet spectroscopy to determine DLA metallicities and velocity widths. Including literature data, our sample consists of 37 DLAs with estimates of the spin temperature $T_s$ and the covering factor. We find a strong $4\sigma$) difference between the $T_s$ distributions in high-z (z>2.4) and low-z (z<2.4) DLA samples. The high-z sample contains more systems with high $T_s$ values, $\gtrsim 1000$ K. The $T_s$ distributions in DLAs and the Galaxy are also clearly (~$6\sigma$) different, with more high-$T_s$ sightlines in DLAs than in the Milky Way. The high $T_s$ values in the high-z DLAs of our sample arise due to low fractions of the cold neutral medium. For 29 DLAs with metallicity [Z/H] estimates, we confirm the presence of an anti-correlation between $T_s$ and [Z/H], at $3.5\sigma$ significance via a non-parametric Kendall-tau test. This result was obtained with the assumption that the DLA covering factor is equal to the core fraction. Monte Carlo simulations show that the significance of the result is only marginally decreased if the covering factor and the core fraction are uncorrelated, or if there is a random error in the inferred covering factor. We also find evidence for redshift evolution in DLA $T_s$ values even for the z>1 sub-sample. Since z>1 DLAs have angular diameter distances comparable to or larger than those of the background quasars, they have similar efficiency in covering the quasars. Low covering factors in high-z DLAs thus cannot account for the observed redshift evolution in spin temperatures. (Abstract abridged.), Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures.
