Abstract

After 2009, the economic phenomenon of Taobao villages appeared in China, whose economic growth started to decline, but the number of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grew at an astonishing rate. Based on a case study of Taobao villages, we found that a new industrial-organizational structure had developed within the traditional e-commerce model. This industrial-organizational structure, which we termed, a key-node industry and industrial net (KIIN) system, is unique in the world. A key-node industry is a platform that integrates logistics, information flow, and capital flow. It reorganizes the traditional industrial-chain structure and is connected with the traditional industrial chains to form a network industrial-organizational model, which can become an industrial net. Through an analysis using the differences-in-differences model, we verify the hypothesis that the KIIN system can improve the efficiency of resource allocation by building a more competitive organizational structure and then improve the production efficiency. Abstract

Strategic renewal, as a temporal process, can be hard to study. In this research, we take advantage of a unique data set that allows us to analyze Nortel, a global telecommunications manufacturer, and their decade-long effort at strategic renewal, which was launched in response to the 2000/2001 industry shock. Using process methods, our findings suggest that, as a firm attempts to move off path, dissonance between initial and newly introduced self-reinforcing processes reduces strategic options and erodes firm resources, preventing strategic renewal. In China, the institutional environment, institutional structure and resulting business environment are rapidly evolving and are not yet stable or predictable. Under these circumstances, guanxi is important to business executives in enacting successful business exchanges in the face of uncertainty and unpredictability. Abstract

Many studies of privatization adopt the neo-liberal model which focuses on financial and economic distributional outcomes, and ignores social costs transferred to the state or broader society. We adopt a post-Keynesian point of view by identifying the social outcomes of privatization and the recipients of their effect in the society. We review regulation theory and discuss the effects of regulation on social and financial outcomes. Finally, we introduce a balanced regulatory model to show that privatization can become a process that achieves economic development and realizes broader social objectives.

Abstract

This research examines the effects of privatization transaction strategy on enterprise performance in developing economies. Focusing on trade sale privatization, we use an event-driven data strategy and time-series regression techniques on data covering fixed-line telecommunications operators between 1980 and 1998. The results show performance benefits are realized when privatization trade sales introduce large-block foreign shareholdings and hybrid forms of governance, such as joint ventures or consortia. These hybrid governance structures capture more complex ownership effects during privatization restructuring, particularly when compared with the dispersed shareholdings of share issue privatization, which show no discernable effect on performance. We argue traditional financial models are too focused on large-scale market-driven mechanisms at the expense of institution-building mechanisms, and as such fail to capture important contributors to performance improvement. We advance a comparative institutional lens to better understand how "firms effects" matter for privatization restructuring and performance.

Using longitudinal case research methods, this paper demonstrates how a for-profit public firm controls a nonprofit organization, using the specific case of Intrawest Corporation, a Canadian property developer, and its timeshare program, Club Intrawest. The research demonstrates how the governance structure allows the for-profit firm to control the assets and revenue streams of the nonprofit organization, while passing on the costs and risk to the timeshare consumers. Abstract

Strategic renewal is undertaken by organizations for a variety of reasons, one of which is in response to an industry shock. Although research has investigated strategic renewal retrospectively, lack of empirical data has led to cross-sectional analysis; we know much less about how the process occurs over time. In this research, we take advantage of a unique data set that allows us to study a firm's attempt at strategic renewal over a period of 10 years. We analyze Nortel, a Canadian-based leading telecommunications manufacturer, which undertook a strategic renewal process in response to a major industry shock that occurred in 2000/2001. We employ path constitution analysis to identify the firm's strategic renewal efforts and outcomes from 2001 to 2009. Our findings indicate that, as a firm makes efforts to engage in strategic renewal and to move off path, dissonance between initial and newly introduced self- reinforcing processes reduces strategic options and, over time, erodes firm resources, preventing strategic renewal. We contribute to theory on strategic renewal and path dependence by identifying the mechanisms that can prevent a firm from altering strategic paths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
