A low complexity massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique is studied with a geometry-based stochastic channel model, called COST 2100 model. We propose to exploit the discrete-time Fourier transform of the antenna correlation function to perform user scheduling. The proposed algorithm relies on a trade off between the number of occupied bins of the eigenvalue spectrum of the channel covariance matrix for each user and spectral overlap among the selected users. We next show that linear precoding design can be performed based only on the channel correlation matrix. The proposed scheme exploits the angular bins of the eigenvalue spectrum of the channel covariance matrix to build up an "approximate eigenchannels" for the users. We investigate the reduction of average system throughput with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). Analysis and numerical results show that while the throughput slightly decreases due to the absence of CSIT, the complexity of the system is reduced significantly., Comment: IEEE TVT 2019, 7 pages, 4 figures

Using fractional-calculus mathematics, a novel approach is introduced to rewrite modified Bessel functions in series form using simple elementary functions. Then, a statistical characterization of the total receive-SNR at the destination, corresponding to the source-relay-destination and the source-destination link SNR, is provided for a general relaying scenario, in which the destination exploits a maximum ratio combining (MRC) receiver. Using the novel statistical model for the total receive SNR at the destination, accurate and simple analytical expressions for the outage probability, the bit error probability and the ergodic capacity are obtained.

The performance of a dual-hop MIMO relay network is studied in this paper. The relay is assumed to have access to the statistical channel state information of its preceding and following channels and it is assumed that fading at the antennas of the relay is correlated. The cumulative density function (cdf) of the received SNR at the destination is first studied and closed-form expressions are derived for the asymptotic cases of the fully-correlated and non-correlated scenarios; moreover, the statistical characteristics of the SNR are further studied and an approximate cdf of the SNR is derived for arbitrary correlation. The cdf is a multipartite function which does not easily lend itself to further mathematical calculations, e.g., rate optimization. However, we use it to propose a simple power allocation algorithm which we call "proportional power allocation". The algorithm is explained in detail for the case of two antennas and three antennas at the relay and the extension of the algorithm to a relay with an arbitrary number of the antennas is discussed. Although the proposed method is not claimed to be optimal, the result is indistinguishable from the benchmark obtained using exhaustive search. The simplicity of the algorithm combined with its precision is indeed attractive from the practical point of view.

We investigate the possibility of developing physical layer network coding (PNC) schemes with embedded strong secrecy based on standard QAM modulators. The proposed scheme employs a triple binning approach at the QAM front-end of the wireless PNC encoders. A constructive example of a strong secrecy encoder is presented when a BPSK and an 8-PAM modulator are employed at the wireless transmitters and generalized to arbitrary M-QAM modulators, assuming channel inversion is attainable at the first cycle of the transmission. "Amplify and Forward" and "Decode and Forward" are the two main relaying functions that have been proposed since the advent of cooperative communication. "\textit{Soft} Decode and Forward" is a recently introduced relaying principle that is to combine the benefits of the classical two relaying algorithms. In this work, we thoroughly investigate \textit{soft} relaying algorithms when convolutional or turbo codes are applied. We study the error performance of two cooperative scenarios employing soft-relaying. A novel approach, the mutual information loss due to data processing, is proposed to analyze the relay-based soft encoder. We also introduce a novel approach to derive the estimated bit error rate and the equivalent channel SNR for the relaying techniques considered in the paper.
