Abstract

Electron transport through a one-dimensional ring connected with two external leads, in the presence of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength \alpha and a perpendicular magnetic field is studied. Applying Griffith's boundary conditions we derive analytic expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients of the corresponding one-electron scattering problem. We generalize earlier conductance results by Nitta et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 75, 695 (1999)] and investigate the influence of \alpha, temperature, and a weak magnetic field on the conductance. Varying \alpha and temperature changes the position of the minima and maxima of the magnetic-field dependent conductance, and it may even convert a maximum into a minimum and vice versa., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We study ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings in the presence of spin-orbit interaction of strength \alpha. For a single ring the transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained analytically and from them the conductance for a chain of rings as a function of \alpha and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. We show that due to destructive spin interferences the chain can be totaly opaque for certain ranges of k the width of which depends on the value of \alpha. A periodic modulation of the strength \alpha or of the ring radius widens up the gaps considerably and produces a nearly binary conductance output., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Appl. Phys. 7. Three-dimensional virtual microscopy of colorectal biopsies

Abstract

Conventional optical microscopy of specimens from colorectal biopsies commonly produces diagnostic errors due to incomplete sampling or poor orientation. Obtaining additional sections or re-embedding may help avoid these errors, but can prolong turnaround time. We describe new technology, which incorporates exhaustive sectioning, 3-dimensional reconstruction, and virtual microscopy, that may eliminate these problems by enabling pathologists to rapidly examine entire specimens and convert poorly oriented mucosa to well-oriented mucosa.

Abstract

The investigation of the conductivity and the impurity profiles of InP implanted with dopant ions such as Si, Be or with non dopant ions such as B, H, N, O and P reveals that the carrier profile is influenced by the redistribution of Fe ions during annealing. The experimental investigation is conducted in the substrates which have, and sometimes do not have, the doping of Fe. The contribution without the carriers, which arise from the dopant ions, is investigated by using the electrically inactive B, H, N, O and P.

Abstract

Insects use sensitive olfactory systems to detect relevant host volatiles and avoid un-suitable hosts in a complex environmental odor landscape. Insects with short lifespans, such as gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), are under strong selection pressure to detect and locate suitable hosts for their offspring in a short period of time. Ephemeral gall midges constitute excellent models for investigating the role of olfaction in host choice, host shift and speciation. Midges mate near their site of emergence and females migrate in order to locate hosts for oviposition, thus females are expected to be more responsive to olfactory cues emitted by the host compared to males. In this study, we explored the correlation between host choice and the func-tion of the peripheral olfactory system in twelve species of gall midges, including species with close phylogenetic relationships that use widely different host plants and more distantly related gall midge species that use similar hosts. We tested the anten-nal responses of males and females of the twelve species to a blend of 45 known insect attractants using coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detec-tion. When the species-specific response profiles of the gall midges were compared to a newly generated molecular-based phylogeny, we found they responded to the com-pounds in a sex- and species-specific manner. We found the physiological response profiles of species that use annual host plants, and thus have to locate their host every season, are similar for species with similar hosts despite large phylogenetic distances. In addition, we found closely related spe-cies with perennial hosts demonstrated odor response profiles that were consistent with their phylogenetic history. The ecology of the gall midges affects the tuning of the peripheral olfactory system, which in turn demonstrates a correlation between olfaction and speciation in the context of host use.
