1. How glass breaks -- Damage explains the difference between surface and fracture energies in amorphous silica

Abstract

The difference between free surface energy and fracture toughness in amorphous silica is studied via multi-scale simulations. We combine the homogenization of a molecular dynamics fracture model with a phase-field approach to track and quantify the various energy contributions. We clearly separate free surface energy localized as potential energy on the surface and damage diffusion over a ca. 20 \r{A} range around the crack path. The plastic contribution is negligible. These findings, which clarify brittle fracture mechanisms in amorphous materials, align with toughness measurements in silica.

Abstract

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of Zr$_{50}$Cu$_{50}$ metallic glass samples submitted to mechanical deformation at different strain rates. The simultaneous measurements of the stress-strain curve, and of the temperature evolution during the cyclic mechanical load, are used to determine the thermo-mechanical constitutive laws at the continuum scale. It is shown that plastic deformation acts as a heat source, but strong finite size effects affect the unfolding of shear bands and its related dissipation rate. Finally, a thermo-mechanical constitutive law is proposed to reproduce quantitavely self-heating processes at different scales.

Results demonstrate that binding to nucleotide by prenylated and nonprenylated proteins is identical with three major differences in their interaction with GTPase activating proteins. Data indicate that prenylation of the Rho-family small GTPase is important for its reaction with GTPase activating proteins and Rac signaling.

Abstract

Perennial plants such as the long-lived trees of boreal forest cycle between periods of active growth and dormancy. Transition from active growth to dormancy is induced by short day (SD) signal. Once dormancy is established, prolonged exposure to low temperature is required for breaking dormancy before warm temperatures can induce growth. We have studied global changes in gene expression in the apex of model plant hybrid aspen during the distinct stages of activity-dormancy cycle. Our data shows that all stages of activity-dormancy cycle in the apex are associated with substantial modulation of the transcriptome. Detailed analysis of core cell cycle genes indicates that with the exception of plant specific B-type CDKs, all of the other CDKs are regulated post-transcriptionally during growth cessation. SD signal appears to target the expression of cyclin genes that are down regulated during growth arrest. Several of the cold hardiness related genes e. g. dehydrins are induced during transition to dormancy although temperature is not reduced and the up-regulation of the expression of these genes does not appear to rely on SD mediated induction of classical CBF transcription factors. Our results suggest that transcriptional control plays a key role in modulation of hormones such as ABA and GA that are known to play a central role in various processes during activity-dormancy cycle. Analysis of histone and DNA modification genes indicates that chromatin remodeling could be involved in coordinating global changes in gene expression during activity-dormancy cycle.

Abstract

Ambient Networks (AN) are under development and they are based on novel networking concepts and systems that will enable a wide range of user and business communication scenarios beyond today's fixed, 3rd generation mobile and IP standards. Central to this project is the concept of Ambient Control Space (ACS) and the Domain Manager control function, which manages the underlying data transfer capabilities and presents a set of interfaces towards the supported services and applications. Network Management Systems of Ambient Networks must work in an environment where heterogeneous networks compose and cooperate, on demand and transparently, without the need for manual (pre or re)-configuration or offline negotiations between network operators. To achieve these goals, ambient network management systems must become dynamic, distributed, self-managing and responsive to the network and its ambience. This paper describes the different management research challenges and four complementary solution approaches (i.e. Pattern-based Management, Peer-to-Peer Management, (Un)PnP Management, Traffic Engineering Management Application Approaches) that enable efficient management of ambient networks, and the relationships between them, and presents the main results achieved so far. Abstract

System management addresses the provision of functions required for controlling, planning, allocating, monitoring, and deploying the resources of a network and of its services in order to optimize its efficiency and productivity and to safeguard its operation. It is also an enabler for the creation and sustenance of new business models and value chains, reflecting the different roles the service providers and users of a network can assume. Ambient Network represents a new networking approach and it aims to enable the cooperation of heterogeneous networks, on demand and transparently, to the potential users, without the need for pre-configuration or offline negotiation between network operators. To achieve these goals, ambient network management systems have to become dynamic, adaptive, autonomic and responsive to the network and its ambience. This paper discusses relationships between the concepts of autonomous and self-manageability and those of ambient networking, and the challenges and benefits that arise from their employment.
