Developed by INRAE, Optirrig is a software tool for generating, analysing and optimising irrigation scenarios. It is based on a simplified description of plant growth according to the evolution of water and nitrogen resources in the soil. It compares the merits of different irrigation strategies according to different constraints (water quota, periods of limited availability, prefectoral decrees, water and energy costs), for operational objectives at the plot, farm or territory level.

Abstract

Quel est le potentiel réel d’économie d’eau à la parcelle résultant du changement de matériel d’irrigation ou de l'adoption d’outils de pilotage dans un contexte donné? Pour répondre à cette question, les auteurs de cet article ont compilé plus de quatre-vingt-treize références d’essais expérimentaux de consommation d’eau représentatifs d'un large éventail de conditions pédo-climatiques et de cultures en France métropolitaine. Leurs résultats montrent que les économies d'eau potentiellement réalisables en passant de l’aspersion à un système localisé d’irrigation sont limitées, voire impossibles, lors des années très sèches. Au contraire, le pilotage de l'irrigation à l'aide de sondes d’état hydrique du sol permet des économies d'eau moins dépendantes des conditions climatiques.

Abstract

What is the real potential for water savings at plot level resulting from the change of irrigation equipment or the adoption of management tools in a given context? To answer this question, the authors of this article have compiled more than ninety-three references of experimental water consumption trials representative of a wide range of of soil and climate conditions and crops in metropolitan France. Their results show that the water savings potentially achievable by switching from sprinkling to a localised irrigation system are limited, if not impossible, in very dry years. On the contrary, irrigation control using soil water status sensors allows water savings that are less dependent on climatic conditions.

Optirrig est un outil logiciel de génération, d'analyse et d'optimisation de scénarios d'irrigation qui a été développé par INRAE. Il s'appuie sur une description simplifiée de la croissance des plantes en fonction de l'évolution des ressources en eau et en azote du sol. Il permet de comparer les mérites de différentes stratégies d’irrigation en fonction de différentes contraintes (quota d’eau, périodes de disponibilité limitée, arrêtés préfectoraux, coût de l'eau et de l'énergie), pour des objectifs opérationnels à l'échelle de la parcelle, de l'exploitation ou du territoire.

Abstract

Du fait des coûts engendrés, les consommations énergétiques constituent un élément décisif dans le choix d’une technologie lorsqu’un agriculteur envisage de moderniser son système d’irrigation et apparaissent même plus incitatrices que les économies d’eau proprement dites. Ce choix est également influencé par les coûts liés à la main d’oeuvre pour l’irrigation C’est la raison pour laquelle le Ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation a commandité la présente étude, dans le but d’aider les irrigants dans leur choix de modernisation d’équipement en lien avec les aspects énergétiques et besoin en main d’oeuvre. Cette étude a pour but de produire un outil permettant d’évaluer les économies d’énergie et de main d’oeuvre potentiellement réalisables lors d’un changement de système d’irrigation. Elle fait suite au premier volet intitulé « Evaluation des économies d’eau à la parcelle réalisables par la modernisation des systèmes d’irrigation » (Serra-Wittling et Molle, 2017).Après une présentation synthétique les bases du concept d’efficience énergétique en irrigation et des moyens d’améliorer cette efficience, l’étude compile les résultats d’expérimentations et mesures de terrain effectuées en France sur diverses installations. Elle présente un référentiel d’économies d’énergie réalisables par un changement de matériel d’irrigation dans le cas d’une parcelle alimentée par un réseau collectif ou d’une parcelle alimentée par station de pompage individuelle, ainsi qu’un référentiel d’économies de temps de main d’oeuvre réalisables.

Abstract

A distributional semiempirical model for the simulation of spatial distribution of water application under center pivot sprinklers has been developed by the writers. This method describes the probability of water application for a sprinkler using a combination of beta functions. The calibration of this model has been undertaken using laboratory tests conducted in controlled conditions and then in windy conditions. The parameters calibrated are listed. The minimum number of tests needed for calibration has been estimated. The model used can be calibrated from one test in controlled conditions and three or four tests in windy conditions covering the range of usual wind speeds. Validation should be performed using at least two more infield tests. This simulation model of spatial water distribution under sprinklers of center pivot will thereafter be used to simulate the distribution of water under a typical pivot machine.

Abstract

A model describing the application pattern produced by a single sprinkler is proposed. Based on calibrated statistical distributions and free from any ballistic consideration, this model uses a mixture of beta probability distributions in which parameters are first estimated with water application data measured in zero wind condition. Data measured in field conditions are then used to assess the wind effect on the shift of the center of gravity of the irrigated area, on the range of the sprinkler in various directions, and on the values of the beta distributions' parameters. The computation of the water application amounts at any point of the irrigated area is finally resolved in the use of a single equation, which can be easily implemented in a software package to simulate application patterns under a series of sprinklers attached to a center pivot or moving lateral irrigation machine.

Abstract

International audience; Treated wastewater reuse (TWWR) helps to meet growing water demands, reduces degradation of the quality of conventional water resources and contributes to soil fertilization. But, TWWR requires irrigation methods that minimize risks for health and the environment. At the international level, guidelines and recommendations have been developed based on health risk assessment processes, which form the background for most of the proposed guidelines on TWWR in other countries (Aquarec project, 2006; EPHC/NRMMC/AHMC, 2006; EPA, 2012). France has recently adopted regulations concerning the treated wastewater reuse for sprinkler irrigation, including the use of water from urban wastewater treatment plants for field crops or green spaces irrigation (ANSES, 2012; NOR-AFSP1410752A, 2014; NOR-TREL1803081A, 2018). However, there is still lack of knowledge about dispersion of inhaling pathogens such enteric viruses or toxic contaminants by sprinkler irrigation.

Abstract

The data set consists of experimental data from lab evaluation to characterize droplet-size distribution of new sprinkler and drift/transport mechanism in controlled (i.e. wind tunnel) conditions. This works aims at obtaining an optimal water distribution from a localized irrigation micro-sprinkler. Similar data have been collected on standard irrigation sprinklers, the objective of this MADFORWATER research is to control the droplet size spectrum to minimize drift (smaller droplets carried by the wind) and compaction (bigger droplets that impact on the soil and induce crusting) risks.

Abstract

The data set consists of: (i) experimental data from laboratory, using fresh water (FW) or synthetic wastewater (WW), and field observations with real treated wastewater (TWW); (ii) detailed description of the fluid mechanics simulation process, performed for an irrigation emitter designed during MADFORWATER project. This emitter is able to withstand long terms exposure to low quality effluents without any drop in its discharge. Simulation aims at evaluating various emitters design to obtain an optimal pressure-discharge curve from a localized irrigation micro-sprinkler, while the data collected from experimental field results aim at evaluating the innovative micro-sprinkler in terms of droplet production. Similar data have been collected on standard irrigation sprinklers, the objective of the research is to control the droplet size spectrum. The characteristics of existing sprinklers are not identified (droplet size is not measured) or not adapted to TWW. Potential users of this data set may include all TWW reusers that want to get rid of clogging problems or at least minimize such problems.
