Abstract: The effect of TiO2, ZrO2, BaO and extra addition of silica on the crystallization behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of an apatite–mullite based glass–ceramic system were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The precipitated crystalline phases were fluorapatite [Ca10(PO4)6F2] and mullite [Al6Si2O13], which apart from the extra bearing SiO2 specimen were rod-like in the other specimens. The rod-like crystalline phases'' lengths were small, i.e. <20μm, in the TiO2 and BaO containing glass–ceramics, but small addition of ZrO2 enhanced the length of crystalline phases to approximately 50μm. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the prepared glasses and glass–ceramics were also studied. The results showed that the additive oxides affected both parameters differently. The highest fracture strength and fracture toughness values belonged to the TiO2 and BaO containing glass–ceramics which contained smaller crystal size. The mechanical properties of the prepared glass–ceramic samples did not differ strongly and/or were even decreased by addition of ZrO2 and extra amount of SiO2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: The fifth Millennium Development Goal aims to improve maternal health by reducing maternal mortality by 75% from 1990 to 2015. Consequently, utilizing quality care indicators and performance evaluations is crucial for providing effective services. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of care for critically ill mothers in hospitals through action research., Methods/design: This study involves action research utilizing reform cycles, including focus group meetings with the head of the midwifery office, maternity hospital officials, gynecologists, and midwives from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Following a severe morbidity incident resulting in maternal death, a hospital meeting will convene to investigate the root causes. This committee will review the hospital records from the mother's admission to discharge to identify necessary preventive measures against malpractice. Sampling is purposeful. Sample size will be determined by data saturation. The project's final results, along with participant feedback, will inform the planning of the second action research cycle, which will encompass planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The final report will be submitted to officials for approval, and the number of invitees for subsequent meetings will be based on study findings, facilitating discussion and decision-making for ongoing processes. Ultimately, the final care quality assessment process will be prepared for presentation., Discussion: In many birth blocks, women experiencing severe complications from pregnancy and childbirth face similar health issues. In the current study we fabricated potent materials by incorporating therapeutic elements into calcium phosphates (CPs) to combat cancer. This involved synthesizing manganese (Mn)- and lithium (Li)-doped CPs and loading them into electrospun nanofibers (NFs) composed of chitosan (CS) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). The characterized CPs exhibited excellent properties, including a particle size of 47-75 nm, surface charge of -(30-56) mV, and specific surface area of 75-266 m 2 /g. The electrochemical analysis revealed that Mn and Mn/Li-doped CPs are promising for generating oxygen free radicals and H 2 O 2 , crucial for cancer therapy. Biological evaluation showcased the outstanding performance of the developed materials. MTT assay revealed a cytotoxic effect of nano-constructs on melanoma A375 cell line without adverse effects on normal L929 cells over 72 h. Annexin V/PI apoptosis assay indicated substantial apoptosis rates in A375 cells treated with PC-20 % (62.55 ± 4.59 %). The obtained data of qPCR analysis of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes (P53, Bax, Bcl-2) in A375 cells treated with different CP nanoparticles (NPs) showed a significant increase in P53 and Bax gene expression, indicating high levels of A375 cell apoptosis. Additionally, the samples containing Mn ion exhibited high reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is influenced by several factors, among which genetic polymorphisms play a key role. Polymorphisms in various genes affect key pathways involved in HCC development, including metabolism, expression of inflammatory cytokines, cell proliferation, and apoptosis regulation. These polymorphisms induce differential effects on susceptibility to HCC, disease progression, and treatment outcomes. Understanding the effect of genetic variations on HCC pathogenesis is essential to elucidate underlying mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets. Background: Operating rooms contribute to over 40% of hospital expenses, with a portion attributed to waste from single-use, sterile surgical supplies (SUSSS). This research aimed to determine the amount of cost wastage due to not using SUSSS during laparotomy procedures., Methods: A descriptive-analytical investigation was conducted in two prominent teaching hospitals in Mashhad, Iran 2018. Seventy-seven laparotomy surgeries were scrutinized, documenting both used and unused disposable devices, with their respective costs being assessed. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 16 software., Results: The study revealed that during surgery in the operating rooms, waste of SUSSS averaged 5.9%. Betadine solution and sterile Gauze types were the top two contributors to resource wastage. Sterile Gauze types incurred the highest cost loss. The study found a significant correlation between cost wastage and surgeon experience (r = 0.296, P < 0.001) as well as surgery duration (r = 0.439, P < 0.001)., Conclusion: Inadequate management of available and commonly used disposable supplies leads to increased hospital expenses. Enhancing the surgical team's knowledge of sterile surgical supplies usage and making thoughtful selections can play a vital role in curbing health costs by minimizing waste of SUSSS in the operating rooms., (© 2024. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn) in the brain and progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) region of the brain. Although the role of neuroinflammation and cellular immunity in PD has been extensively studied, the involvement of humoral immunity mediated by antibodies and B cells has received less attention. This article provides a comprehensive review of the current understanding of humoral immunity in PD. Here, we discuss alterations in B cells in PD, including changes in their number and phenotype. Evidence mostly indicates a decrease in the quantity of B cells in PD, accompanied by a shift in the population from naïve to memory cells. Furthermore, the existence of autoantibodies that target several antigens in PD has been investigated (i.e., anti-α-syn autoantibodies, anti-glial-derived antigen antibodies, anti-Tau antibodies, antineuromelanin antibodies, and antibodies against the renin-angiotensin system). Several autoantibodies are generated in PD, which may either provide protection or have harmful effects on disease progression. Furthermore, we have reviewed studies focusing on the utilization of antibodies as a potential treatment for PD, both in animal and clinical trials. The result of infection of bone with microorganisms is osteomyelitis and septic arthritis. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for most of its cases (more than 50%). Since MRSA is resistant to many treatments, it is accompanied by high costs and numerous complications, necessitating more effective new treatments. Recently, development of gelatin nanoparticles have attracted the attention of scientists of biomedicine to itself, and have been utilized as a delivery vehicle for antibiotics because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. Promising results have been reported with gelatin modification and combinations with chemical agents. Although these findings have been suggested that gelatin has the potential to be a suitable option for continuous release of antibiotics in osteomyelitis and septic arthritis treatment, they still have not become routine in clinical practices. The most deliver antibiotic using gelatin-derived composites is vancomycin which is showed the good efficacy. To date, a number of pre-clinical studies evaluated the utility of gelatin-based composites in the management of osteomyelitis. Gelatin-based composites were found to have satisfactory performance in the control of infection, as well as the promotion of bone defect repair in chronic osteomyelitis models. Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a lethal complication in the world, affecting around half a million individuals each year. The treatment of PC is relatively difficult due to the difficulty in making an early diagnosis. Most PC patients are confronted with locally metastatic or advanced diseases in the asymptomatic phase, and about 80% have late diagnosis with metastasis. Recently, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have drawn attention as a novel biological regulation layer. They take part in the regulation of mRNA and can be used as a prognostic factor or drug target. Based on their functions as regulators of PC initiation and progress, the lncRNAs can be categorized as tumor suppressors or oncogenic. They can be considered as a target for finding new biomarkers for prognosis, diagnosis, monitoring, and treating drug response in PC. Background: In recent decades, medical supervision of the labor and delivery process has expanded beyond its boundaries to the extent that in many settings, childbirth has become a medical event. This situation has influenced midwifery care. One of the significant barriers to midwives providing care to pregnant women is the medicalization of childbirth. So far, the policies and programs of the Ministry of Health to reduce medical interventions and cesarean section rates have not been successful. Therefore, the current study aims to be conducted with the purpose of "Designing a Midwife-Led Birth Center Program Based on the MAP-IT Model"., Methods/design: The current study is a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design by using the MAP-IT model includes 5 steps: Mobilize, Assess, Plan, Implement, and Track, providing a framework for planning and evaluating public health interventions in a community. It will be implemented in three stages: The first phase of the research will be a cross-sectional descriptive study to determine the attitudes and preferences towards establishing a midwifery-led birthing center focusing on midwives and women of childbearing age by using two researcher-made questionnaires to assess the participants' attitudes and preferences toward establishing a midwifery-led birthing center. Subsequently, extreme cases will be selected based on the participants' average attitude scores toward establishing a midwifery-led birthing center in the quantitative section. In the second stage of the study, qualitative in-depth interviews will be conducted with the identified extreme cases from the first quantitative phase and other stakeholders (the first and second steps of the MAP-IT model, namely identifying and forming a stakeholder coalition, and assessing community resources and real needs). In this stage, the conventional qualitative content analysis approach will be used. Subsequently, based on the quantitative and qualitative data obtained up to this stage, a midwifery-led birthing center program based on the third step of the MAP-IT model, namely Plan, will be developed and validated using the Delphi method., Discussion: This is the first study that uses a mixed-method approach for designing a midwife-led maternity care program based on the MAP-IT model. This study will fill the research gap in the field of improving midwife-led maternity care and designing a program based on the needs of a large group of pregnant mothers. Background: For women in the first trimester, amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling is recommended for screening. Machine learning has shown increased accuracy over time and finds numerous applications in enhancing decision-making, patient care, and service quality in nursing and midwifery. This study aims to develop an optimal learning model utilizing machine learning techniques, particularly neural networks, to predict chromosomal abnormalities and evaluate their predictive efficacy., Methods/ Design: This cross-sectional study will be conducted in midwifery clinics in Mashhad, Iran in 2024. The data will be collected from 350 pregnant women in the high-risk group who underwent screening tests in the first trimester (between 11-14 weeks) of pregnancy. Information collected includes maternal age, BMI, smoking habits, history of trisomy 21 and other chromosomal disorders, CRL and NT levels, PAPP-A and B-HCG levels, presence of insulin-dependent diabetes, and whether the pregnancy resulted from IVF. The study follows up with the women during their clinic visits and tracks the results of amniocentesis. Sampling is based on Convenience Sampling, and data is gathered using a checklist of characteristics and screening/amniocentesis results. After preprocessing, feature extraction is conducted to identify and predict relevant features. The model is trained and evaluated using K-fold cross-validation., Discussion: There is a growing interest in utilizing artificial intelligence methods, like machine learning and deep learning, in nursing and midwifery. This underscores the critical necessity for nurses and midwives to be well-versed in artificial intelligence methods and their healthcare applications. Objective: The SARS-CoV-2, the cause of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), leads to severe pathogenicity and high mortality among different communities around the world. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms of virus pathogenesis and the immune system's response to prevent the further spread of this virus. This study was aimed to evaluate the relationship between the serum level of interleukin 6 and positive IgG and IgM antibody levels in patients with COVID-19 to investigate inflammation and disease progression., Methods & Materials: In this study, 10 ml of EDTA blood samples were taken from 414 COVID-19 patients. Then, the plasma was separated and the levels of IgM and IgG antibodies and interleukin 6 cytokine were evaluated by ELISA and chemiluminescence methods, respectively. All data were analyzed by SPSS 22 and GraphPad prism 9 software at the significance level of P < 0.05., Results: The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference in the expression of IgM and IgG antibodies between men and women. Also, a significant increase in the mean expression of IL-6 was observed only in the high concentration range (100-〉1000 pg/ml) in men compared to women (P < 0.001). In addition, in the female population, all three concentration ranges (negative, medium, and high) of IL-6 have the highest correlation with high titers (>10 U/ml) of IgM and IgG antibodies. While, in men, all three concentration ranges of IL-6 had the highest correlation with > 10 U/ml IgM antibody titers, but in the case of IgG, the highest correlation between different concentrations of IL-6 was observed with the negative or moderate titers of this antibody and there was an inverse relationship with the high titers of IgG (>10 U/ml)., Conclusion: As a result, the relationship between different serum levels of cytokine IL-6 with different titers of IgM and IgG antibodies was observed in both male and female populations. It is well known that systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an auto-inflammatory disease that is characterized by chronic and widespread inflammation. The exact pathogenesis of SLE is still a matter of debate. However, it has been suggested that the binding of autoantibodies to autoantigens forms immune complexes (ICs), activators of the immune response, in SLE patients. Ultimately, all of these responses lead to an imbalance between anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory cytokines, resulting in cumulative inflammation. IL-35, the newest member of the IL-12 family, is an immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory cytokine secreted mainly by regulatory cells. Structurally, IL-35 is a heterodimeric cytokine, composed of Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3) and p35. IL-35 appears to hold therapeutic and diagnostic potential in cancer and autoimmune diseases. In this review, we summarized the most recent associations between IL and 35 and SLE. Unfortunately, the comparative review of IL-35 in SLE indicates many differences and contradictions, which make it difficult to generalize the use of IL-35 in the treatment of SLE. With the available information, it is not possible to talk about targeting this cytokine for the lupus treatment. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is known as an autoimmune disorder that is characterized by the breakdown of self-tolerance, resulting in disease onset and progression. Macrophages have been implicated as a factor in the development of SLE through faulty phagocytosis of dead cells or an imbalanced M1/M2 ratio. The study aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus on M1 and M2 macrophages in new case lupus patients. For this purpose, blood monocytes were collected from lupus patients and healthy people and were cultured for 5 days to produce macrophages. For 48 h, the macrophages were then cocultured with either probiotics or lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Flow cytometry and real-time polymerase chain reaction were then used to analyze the expression of cluster of differentiation (CD) 14, CD80, and human leukocyte antigen - DR (HLADR) markers, as well as cytokine expression (interleukin [IL]1-β, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor α [TNF-α], IL-10, and transforming growth factor beta [TGF-β]). The results indicated three distinct macrophage populations, M0, M1, and M2. In both control and patient-derived macrophage-derived monocytes (MDMs), the probiotic groups showed a decrease in CD14, CD80, and HLADR expression compared to the LPS group. This decrease was particularly evident in M0 and M2 macrophages from lupus patients and M1 macrophages from healthy subjects. In addition, the probiotic groups showed increased levels of IL-10 and TGF-β and decreased levels of IL-12, IL1-β, and TNF-α in MDMs from both healthy and lupus subjects compared to the LPS groups. Although there was a higher expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in lupus patients, there was a higher expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines in healthy subjects. Conventional cancer therapies with chemodrugs suffer from various disadvantages, such as irreversible side effects on the skin, heart, liver, and nerves with even fatal consequences. RNA-based therapeutic is a novel technology which offers great potential as non-toxic, non-infectious, and well-tolerable platform. Herein, we introduce different RNA-based platforms with a special focus on siRNA, miRNA, and mRNA applications in cancer treatment in order to better understand the details of their therapeutic effects. Background: Endometriosis is a benign and chronic gynecological estrogen-dependent disease. Considering the prevalence and the importance of measuring the long-term effects of endometriosis in affected women's lives t the EIQ scale was designed and psychometrically analyzed in English in Australia, in three recall periods (last 12 months, 1 to 5 years ago and more than 5 years ago). It has never been used in Iran and its validity and reliability have not been assessed either. Therefore, the present study aimed to translate and investigate the psychometric properties of the EIQ., Methods: In this study, 200 women were selected through random sampling in 2022. After forward and backward translation, the face validity, content validity, and construct validity of EIQ (through Corrected Item-Total Correlation) were examined. To assess the reliability of the scale, both internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and test-retest stability methods were employed., Results: Impact Score with a score above 1.5 was approved. CVI and CVR values of the EIQ tool were 0.97 and 0.94, respectively. The Item to total Correlation confirmed the construct validity of all seven dimensions of the tool, more than the cut-off (0.3) except lifestyle. Cronbach's alpha coefficient and Intra Correlation Coefficient (ICC) were acceptable for all dimensions., Conclusion: The Persian version of EIQ is a valid and reliable scale. Background: Gestational diabetes is a type of carbohydrate intolerance that is diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy. Researches have shown that gestational diabetes is associated with many negative prenatal and birth outcomes. Because of the complications such as infant death, several diabetics' mothers plan to stop breastfeeding. Research findings indicate a decrease in breastfeeding in mothers with gestational diabetes/ or contradictory tissues regarding the factors affecting the breastfeeding behavior of mothers with gestational diabetes and a special program to promote breastfeeding for these mothers based on the social and cultural conditions of Iranian society. The present study aims to design an interventional program with a mixed qualitative study based on the theory of planned behavior (PBT) to prevent the decrease of breastfeeding in diabetic mothers., Methods/design: A mixed methods exploratory design will be used to conduct this study in 3 phases. The first phase (qualitative): The purpose of the first phase is to understand the experience of breastfeeding mothers who had gestational diabetes, which will be done using the directed content analysis method. The purposive sampling will be used on pregnant mothers with gestational diabetes 30-34 weeks and mothers with infants (up to 6 months) with a history of gestational diabetes. The second phase include designing and implementing an educational program based on the PBT: Education will be conducted based on the needs assessment of the qualitative phase, the opinions of the focus group, and the literature review, then the breastfeeding behavior will be measured using the survey tool of "breastfeeding drop". The third phase: Interventional quantitative phase: The sample size will be carried out by a pilot study, then a designed program as an educational intervention for teaching breastfeeding behavior based on the PBT for 30-34 weeks pregnant mothers with gestational diabetes will be implemented during 3-4 sessions and breastfeeding behavior will be evaluated after delivery., Discussion: This is the first mixed-method study in Iran that led to implement an interventional program based on the theory of planned behavior. Because of the complications such as infant death, several diabetics' mothers plan to stop breastfeeding. Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease recognized by elevated activity of autoimmune cells, loss of tolerance, and decreased regulatory T cells producing inhibitory cytokines. Despite many efforts, the definitive treatment for lupus has not been fully understood. Curcumin (CUR) and berberine (BBR) have significant immunomodulatory roles and anti-inflammatory properties that have been demonstrated in various studies. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of CUR and BBR on human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs) with an special focus on the maturation and activation of DCs., Methods: Human monocytes were isolated from the heparinized blood of SLE patients and healthy individuals, which were then exposed to cytokines (IL-4 and GM-CSF) for five days to produce immature DCs. Then, the obtained DCs were characterized by FITC-uptake assay and then cultured in the presence of CUR, BBR, or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 48 h. Finally, the maturation of DCs was analyzed by the level of maturation using flow cytometry or real-time PCR methods., Results: The results showed promising anti-inflammatory effects of CUR and BBR in comparison with LPS, supported by a significant reduction of not only co-stimulatory and antigen-presenting factors such as CD80, CD86, CD83, CD1a, CD14, and HLA-DR but also inflammatory cytokines such as IL-12., Conclusion: CUR and BBR could arrest DC maturation and develop a tolerogenic DC phenotype that subsequently promoted the expression of inhibitory cytokines and reduced the secretion of proinflammatory markers., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide; however, there is not a convincing treatment for this disease. Limitations of conventional CRC therapies force scientists to develop novel treatment concepts for both primary care alongside adjuvant therapy. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been introduced as a promising therapeutic procedure for CRC mediated through theranostic principle in which special dyes, photosensitizers (PSs), are excited by near-infrared (NIR) and visible light. Recent studies showed that PDT has synergistic effects in combination with chemotherapy or immunotherapy in the treatment of CRC patients. Of note, nanoformulation of PS or immunotherapeutic agents could augment the PDT effectiveness. Background: Menopause is a period of women's life that has the especial physical, psychological and social challenges. So provision of an effective, practical and affordable way for meeting women's related needs is important. In addition, women should be able to incorporate such programs into their daily work. Considering the dearth of suitable services in this regard, this study will be conducted with the aim of designing, validating and evaluating the "Healthy Menopause" expert system on the management of menopausal symptoms., Methods/design: A mixed methods exploratory design will be used to conduct this study in 3 phases. The first phase is a qualitative conventional content analysis study with purposes of exploring the women's experience of menopausal symptoms and extracting their needs, and collecting data about their expectations from a healthy menopause expert system.. The purposive sampling (In his phase data will be gathered through interviewing menopaused women aged 40 to 60 years old and other persons that have rich information in this regard and will be continued until data saturation. The second phase includes designing a healthy menopause expert system in this stage, the needs will be extracted from the qualitative findings along with a comprehensive literature review. The extracted needs will be again confirmed by the participants. Then, through a participatory approach (Participatory Design) using nominal group or Delphi technique the experts' opinion about the priority needs of menopaused women and related solutions will be explored based on the categories of identified needs. Such findings will be used to design a healthy menopause expert system at this stage. The third phase of study is a quantitative research in which the evaluation of the healthy menopause expert system will be done through a randomized controlled clinical trial with the aim of determining the effect of the healthy menopause expert system on the management of menopause symptoms by menopausal women themselves., Discussion: This is the first study that uses a mixed method approach for designing, validating and evaluating of the expert system "Healthy Menopause". This study will fill the research gap in the field of improving menopausal symptoms and designing a healthy menopause expert system based on the needs of the large group of menopause women. Gynecological cancers are one of the main causes of female mortality worldwide. Despite the various strategies to reduce mortality and improve quality of life, there are still many deficiencies in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological cancers. One of the important steps to ensure optimal cancer treatment is the early detection of cancer cells and the use of drugs to reduce toxicity. Due to the increase in systemic toxicity and resistance to traditional and conventional diagnostic methods, new strategies, including nanotechnology, are being used to improve diagnosis and reduce the severity of the disease. Nanoparticles (NPs) provide exciting opportunities to improve Gynecological Cancers (GCs) diagnosis, particularly in the initial stages. In biomedical investigations and clinical settings, NPs can be used to increase the sensitivity and specificity of recognition and/or imaging of GCs with the help of their molecular and cellular processes. To design more efficient diagnostic NPs for gynecological cancer cells or tissues, determining the specific biomarkers is of great importance. NP-based imaging agents are another solution to trace cancer cells. Nanotechnology has emerged as an effective approach to cancer treatment, including Colorectal Cancer (CRC). While conventional treatments, such as chemotherapeutic agents, are used to manage CRC, their efficacy can be improved using drug delivery systems that enhance their bioavailability and reduce side effects. Niosomes, polymeric nanoparticles, have shown promise as biocompatible vehicles that can transport hydrophilic and lipophilic molecules. This can result in reduced drug dosage and increased efficacy. Autoimmune diseases are diseases in which the regulatory mechanisms of the immune response are disturbed. As a result, the body loses self-tolerance. Since one of the main regulatory mechanisms of the immune response is the CTLA4-CD80/86 axis, this hypothesis suggests that autoimmune diseases potentially share a similar molecular basis of pathogenesis. Hence, investigating the CTLA4-CD80/86 axis may be helpful in finding an appropriate treatment strategy. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the molecular basis of the CTLA4-CD80/86 axis in the regulation of the immune response, and then its role in developing some autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. As well, the main therapeutic strategies affecting the CTLA4-CD80/86 axis have been summarized to highlight the importance of this axis in management of autoimmune diseases., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)
