This report addresses the assessment of the Fundamental Climate Data Records (FCDRs) using the methodologies developed under WP2 for mutual and relative consistency and stability (trend artefacts and step changes) both within and across sensor-series. Where possible the FCDR uncertainty information will be validated. Aerosol properties above clouds have been retrieved over the South East Atlantic Ocean during the fire season 2006 using satellite observations from POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances). From June to October, POLDER has observed a mean Above-Cloud Aerosol Optical Thickness (ACAOT) of 0.28 and a mean Above-Clouds Single Scattering Albedo (ACSSA) of 0.87 at 550nm. These results have been used to evaluate the simulation of aerosols above clouds in five Aerosol Comparisons between Observations and Models (Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART), Hadley Centre Global Environmental Model 3 (HadGEM3), European Centre Hamburg Model 5-Hamburg Aerosol Module 2 (ECHAM5-HAM2), Oslo-Chemical Transport Model 2 (OsloCTM2), and Spectral Radiation-Transport Model for Aerosol Species (SPRINTARS)). Most models do not reproduce the observed large aerosol load episodes. The comparison highlights the importance of the injection height and the vertical transport parameterizations to simulate the large ACAOT observed by POLDER. Furthermore, POLDER ACSSA is best reproduced by models with a high imaginary part of black carbon refractive index, in accordance with recent recommendations. ©2016. American Geophysical Union.

This comparative report looks at the development of the concept "dementia-friendly communities" in Europe. In addition, building on the framework developed by the World Health Organisation to create age-friendly cities, it provides a comparative overview of national policies and notable practicies in Europe that aim at creating physical and social environments that enable people with dementia to be part of their communities and to feel respected and valued. Relevant topics addressed in the report include: outdoors spaces and safety, housing, driving, transportation, participation in social and cultural life, employment, voting, stigma and involvment of people with dementia in the development of policies and practices that matters to them. 31 countries have participated in this report, including most Members States of the European Union as well as Jersey, Norway, Monaco, Switzerland and Turkey.

The Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2014 focuces on care pathways for people with dementia living at home. It provides a comparative analysis of national policies and practices addresing different aspects of the pathways to diagnosis and to postdiagnosis support and care in the Members States of the European Union as well as in Jersey, Norway, Monaco, Switzerland and Turkey. Relevant topics addresed in this report include the timely diagnosis of dementia: refferal pathways ; pharmacological treatment and ongoing assessment of dementia ; disclosure of diagnosis and provision of information to people with dementia ; assessment of psychosocial needs and development of care plans ; and access to and transitions between the existing support and care services in these countries.

Since 2007, UK and northwestern (NW) European summers have been anomalously wet, with summer 2007 being notable for signifi-cant f looding in southern England. Arctic sea ice extent had record low values in September 2007 and 2012 (Parkinson & Comiso, 2013). To explore the potential impact of these changes in sea ice on precipitation, we carried out a set of numerical simulations of the high-resolution version of HadAM3 (Pope et al. 2000) driven with different sea surface temperature and sea ice boundary conditions

Developed in France by IFREMER and COMEX, SAGA is the first prototype of a new generation of industrial submarines capable of carrying out underwater operations using divers or robots at close proximity to the work site without surface assistance. SAGA (28 meters long, 550 tons submerged displacement, 6 crew members) has a hyperbaric compartment for 4 to 6 divers. Several important innovations, in particular with regards to energy, give SAGA an exceptional autonomy, essential for performing deep underwater operations. The submarine was launched in October 1987 and has just completed to three-year qualification programme. Since May 1990 SAGA holds the world record of the deepest (-317 m) diver lock-out operation from a submarine. This paper presents the new technologies used for the construction of SAGA and draws up a first appraisal of this ambitious project.
