Even if they are fully vaccinated, they should follow all precautions for unvaccinated people because the vaccine may not provide them complete protection. As a result, understanding their response to a threat is essential because knowing their threat level can be a good predictor of behavioral changes and health-protective behaviors.Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional mixed-method study design was used at the University of Gondar specialized hospital from May 1 to June 30, 2021. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for the quantitative, and tape recorders, field notes, and memos were properly taken during the in-depth interviews for the qualitative data. Multivariable logistic regression with consideration of adjusted odds ratio of 95% confidence interval and p-value of 0.05% was used for statistical significance.Results: The study enrolled 239 people, with a 96% response rate, ranging from 24 to 67 years, with the majority (57.9%) male. Even after receiving the second dose of AstraZeneca, nearly half (46.5%) of participants with a chronic illness perceived a threat to COVID-19. The participant’s age ranges from 24 to 34 years [3.24 (AOR= 3.24 (95% CI: 1.08, 9.68))], patients who are student [2.38 (AOR= 2.38 (95% CI: 1.12, 5.06))], participants applying the recommended behavioral response [2.36 (AOR=2.36 (95% CI: 1.16, 4.81))] and duration of illness ranged from four to six-year [3.17 (AOR=3.17 (95% CI (1.05, 9.58))] were statistically associated with perceived threat.Conclusion: Most people with chronic illnesses do not see the disease as a threat. Particular emphasis should be placed on creating awareness programs and disseminating information through media on prevention, and ongoing health education is strongly advisable.Keywords: COVID-19, mixed approach study, patient with chronic illness, perceived threat, 2nd dose-vaccinated, vulnerable

A comprehensive assessment of the stable isotope distribution in the groundwater systems of South Africa was conducted in relation to the diversity in the aquifer lithology and corresponding hydraulic characteristics. The stable isotopes of oxygen (18O) and hydrogen (2H) in groundwater show distinct spatial variation owing to the recharge source and possibly mixing effect in the aquifers with the existing water, where aquifers are characterized by diverse hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity values. When the shallow aquifer that receives direct recharge from rainfall shows a similar isotopic signature, it implies less mixing effect, while in the case of deep groundwater interaction between recharging water and the resident water intensifies, which could change the isotope signature. As aquifer depth increases the effect of mixing tends to be minimal. In most cases, the isotopic composition of recharging water shows depletion in the interior areas and western arid zones which is attributed to the depleted isotopic composition of the moisture source. The variations in the stable isotope composition of groundwater in the region are primarily controlled by the isotope composition of the rainfall, which shows variable isotope composition as it was observed from the local meteoric water lines, in addition to the evaporation, recharge and mixing effects.

This paper presents a comprehensive hydrogeological investigation that involves field work, aquifer test, hydrogeochemical analysis, environmental isotope analysis, and interpretations around a proposed nuclear power facility in South Africa. The study was undertaken to test the complementarity of the various methods in the coastal aquifer and to verify the hydrogeological conditions within and around the site. The study revealed the presence of two types of aquifers: an upper primary aquifer made up of the Cenozoic deposits of the Algoa Group, and a deeper fractured aquifer made of the Palaezoic Table Mountain Group (TMG) metasedimentary rocks. Owing to ductile deformation in the form of folding, the fractured quartzite and shale aquifers resulted in an artesian condition, often characterized by slightly acidic (pH ≤ 6) and iron-rich groundwater. The most important hydrogeochemical processes responsible for the observed changes in the hydrochemical composition and facies are mineral dissolution, ion exchange and mixing. The environmental isotope results suggest that all groundwater samples are characterized by a depleted δ18O and δ2H signal, indicating high latitude moisture source (southern polar region) and recharge from rainfall, with no or minimal evaporation before and during infiltration. Similarities in the stable isotope signatures between the deeper and shallow aquifer confirm the presence of a strong hydraulic link. The residence time of groundwater in the aquifers underlying the proposed nuclear power plant is estimated using tritium (3H) and 14C, and the results indicate that in the shallow aquifer it ranges from recent recharge to 50 years, and in the deeper aquifer, it ranges from 430 ± 5 years to 1000 ± 10 years, which exists in a quasi-pristine condition.

The study was conducted to evaluate locally available feed ingredient for broiler breed, in 2017. For this study a total of 300 day-old chicks Cobb 500 strains of broiler chicks were initially raised together for one week in a brooding house. At the end of the brooding period (1 week), 285 chicks were randomly distributed into 15 pens equally; representing 5 feeding treatments to evaluate the performance of chicks fed varying dietary levels of pigeon pea seed meal (PSM) replacing soybean meal (SBM) up to the age of 56 days. Treatments were inclusion of PSM at 0 (T1), 5 (T2), 10 (T3), 15 (T4) and 20% (T5). Two birds were randomly selected from each replication for carcass evaluation at the end of the study. The crude protein content of PSM was 21%. Daily dry matter (DM) intake during the entire experimental period ranged 87.73 to 100.31 g/bird and greater value were recorded at T4 than T5 and T2. Daily body weight gain for the entire experimental period were 36.01, 35.76, 37.51, 34.96 and 36.02 g for T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively and values were greater for T3 as compared to T1, T2, T 4 and T 5. Replacement of PSM for SBM lowered yield of most parameters such as dressed weight, eviscerated weight, breast weight, thigh weight and drumstick weight. Depending on the production parameters measured, PSM can be substituted to SBM in broilers diet up to a level of 20% inclusion in the total ration without negative effect on biological performance and did not have any adverse effect on the health of birds, indicating the potential of the plant as an alternative feed ingredient in poultry feeding. AbstractThis study explored indigenous educational practices of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Qene Bet education and its implications to the modern educational practices. The study employed a qualitative approach with an ethnographic design. Three Qene Gubae Bets, one in Bahir Dar City administration and the other two in West Gojjam administrative Zone, were selected using purposive sampling for this study. Data was gathered through field observations, semi-structured interviews and focused group discussion from Yenetas(Qene Teachers) and students. Twenty-four participants have participated in the study. Data is analyzed and results are presented based on thematic approach. The findings indicate that Qene Bet church schools have their own indigenous pedagogical practices such as Qene “Qotera” (self-study), Qene “Negera” (oral presentation and defense) and Qene “Zerefa” (creating and presenting original Qene poems) that demands student centered and deep learning approaches. The findings also indicate that the practices of cooperative learning, peer learning, reflective learning, pace learning, critical interpretation, argumentative oral defense, differentiated instruction, self and peer assessment and scaffolding are central to the Qene education system. The study concluded that Qene Gubae Bet schools pedagogical practices have valuable insights for the current pedagogical practices of contemporary schools in Ethiopia.

Genetic improvement programme will only be successful when accompanied by a good understanding of the influence of different environmental factors, knowledge of the genetic parameters and the genetic relationships between the traits of interest. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of non-genetic factors on growth traits and Kleiber ratios and to estimate genetic parameters for early growth traits in Dorper × indigenous crossbred sheep. The effects of fixed factors were analysed by the general linear model procedure of statistical analysis system, while the genetic parameters were estimated using a WOMBAT computer program fitted animal model. The overall least-square mean for birth weight (BRW), weaning weight (3MW), six-month weight, nine-month weight, and yearling weight were 3.03 ± 0.02, 14.5 ± 0.18, 20.4 ± 0.26, 24.8 ± 0.31, and 28.3 ± 0.40 kg, respectively. The overall least-square mean for Kleiber ratio from birth to weaning (KR1), weaning to six months, six to nine months and nine months to yearling age were 16.8 ± 0.10, 6.41 ± 0.17, 4.55 ± 0.21 and 3.38 ± 0.20 g/kg of metabolic weight, respectively. The inclusion of maternal genetic effect had a significant influence on BRW, and it explains 20% of the phenotypic variation. The total heritability estimates for BRW, 3MW, birth to weaning average daily weight gain and KR1 were 0.10, 0.14, 0.16 and 0.12, respectively. The phenotypic correlation varied from −0.11 ± 0.05 to 0.98 ± 0.02, whereas the direct genetic correlation ranged from −0.32 ± 0.40 to 0.98 ± 0.17. The mean inbreeding coefficient was 0.105% with an annual rate of 0.02%. The heritability estimates for growth traits and Kleiber ratio suggest that slow genetic progress would be expected from the selection. However, the integration of selection with crossbreeding programme can enhance genetic gain. Therefore, selection should be conducted based on breeding values estimated from multiple information sources to increase the selection response.

The growth and efficiency-related traits of the Boer x Central Highland goats raised semi-intensively were evaluated. Besides, genetic and non-genetic factors affecting growth and efficiency-related traits were identified. Data were collected over a period of nine years in a flock of Boer crossbred goats and analyzed using general linear model procedure of SAS. The overall least-squares mean live weight at birth, 3-, 6-, 9- and 12 months of age were 2.52 ± 0.01, 9.81 ± 0.13, 13.8 ± 0.15, 17.8 ± 0.19, and 20.5 ± 0.29 kg, respectively. The average weight gains from birth to 3 months, 3 to 6, 6 to 9 and 9–12 months of age were 80.3, 37.5, 41.9, and 31.2 g day−1, respectively. Boer blood level, birth type, season and year of kidding had a significant effect on growth traits. The overall least-squares mean of Kleiber ratio from birth to 3 months, 3–6 months, 6–9 months, and 9 month to yearling age were 13.99 ± 0.11, 5.23 ± 0.14, 4.66 ± 0.16, and 2.95 ± 0.18, respectively. Parity, birth type, Boer blood level, season and year of birth had a significant influence on the expression of efficiency-related traits (Kleiber ratios) in different growth phases. In terms of growth performance and efficiency-related traits, F2 and F3 crossbred goats did not show any benefit over F1 crossbred goats. Increasing Boer blood level above 50% would be worthless under the existing minimal input production system. Therefore, besides to improving the management of goats, producing the first filial generation would be suitable for medium to high input production systems.

Assessment of risk factors associated with milk production systems is central to ensuring quality and safety of milk and milk products. This study was aimed at identifying possible risk factors in milk contamination in urban and peri-urban areas of the central high lands of Ethiopia. A total of 477 on-farm pooled milk (n = 433) and combined bulk milk samples (n = 44) were collected and processed using standard microbiological techniques to isolate and characterize Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, 433 individual farm owners and 22 collection centre owners were interviewed using a structured and pre-tested questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine risk factors. Of the total individual on-farm pooled milk samples analysed (n = 433), it was found that 103 of the individual milk samples (24%) and 17 of the combined bulk milk (39%) were positive for S. aureus. This difference in prevalence was statistically significant. Even though there were a number of potential variables associated with the recovery of S. aureus in bovine milk, four variables including cleaning milk container with hot water and detergent [Adjusted OR: 0.342, 95% CI, (0.166, 0.701)], mastitis check [Adjusted OR: 3.019, 95% CI (1.542, 5.913)], travel time to collection centres [Adjusted OR: 4.932, 95% CI, (2.265, 10.739)] and amount of milk delivered by farmers to collection centres per day [Adjusted OR: 1.059 (1.032, 1.087 b = 0.057)] were found to be statistically significantly associated with isolation of S. aureus. We recommend a targeted educational intervention on defined risk factors to reduce the post-harvest S. aureus contamination of raw milk in urban and peri-urban milk shed areas of central Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence, antimicrobial resistance patterns, phenotypic and genotypic relatedness of Salmonella enterica recovered from captive wildlife host species and in the environment in Ohio, USA. A total of 319 samples including faecal ( n = 225), feed ( n = 38) and environmental ( n = 56) were collected from 32 different wild and exotic animal species in captivity and their environment in Ohio. Salmonellae were isolated using conventional culture methods and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility with the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Salmonella isolates were serotyped, and genotyping was performed using the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis ( PFGE). Salmonella was detected in 56 of 225 (24.9%) faecal samples; six of 56 (10.7%) environmental samples and six of 38 (15.8%) feed samples. Salmonella was more commonly isolated in faecal samples from giraffes (78.2%; 36/46), cranes (75%; 3/4) and raccoons (75%; 3/4). Salmonella enterica serotypes of known public health significance including S. Typhimurium (64.3%), S. Newport (32.1%) and S. Heidelberg (5.3%) were identified. While the majority of the Salmonella isolates were pan-susceptible (88.2%; 60 of 68), multidrug-resistant strains including penta-resistant type, AmStTeKmGm (8.8%; six of 68) were detected. Genotypic diversity was found among S. Typhimurium isolates. The identification of clonally related Salmonella isolates from environment and faeces suggests that indirect transmission of Salmonella among hosts via environmental contamination is an important concern to workers, visitors and other wildlife. Results of this study show the diversity of Salmonella serovars and public health implications of human exposure from wildlife reservoirs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
