The superposition of causal order shows promise in various quantum technologies. However, the fragility of quantum systems arising from environmental interactions, leading to dissipative behavior and irreversibility, demands a deeper understanding of the possible instabilities in the coherent control of causal orders. In this work, we employ a collisional model to investigate the impact of an open control system on the generation of interference between two causal orders. We present the environmental instabilities for the switch of two arbitrary quantum operations and examine the influence of environmental temperature on each potential outcome of control post-selection. Additionally, we explore how environmental instabilities affect protocol performance, including switching between mutually unbiased measurement observables and refrigeration powered by causal order superposition, providing insights into broader implications., Comment: 7+8 pages, 3+7 figures

In recent years many works have explored possible advantages of indefinite causal order, with the main focus on its controlled implementation known as quantum switch. In this paper, we tackle advantages in quantum thermodynamics, studying whether quantum switch is capable of activating a passive state: either alone or with extra resources (active control state) and/or operations (measurement of the control system). By disproving the first possibility and confirming the second one, we show that quantum switch is not a thermodynamic resource in the discussed context, though, it can facilitate work extraction given external resources. We discuss our findings by considering specific examples: a qubit system subject to rotations around the x and y axes in the Bloch sphere, as well as general unitaries from the U(2) group; and the system as a quantum harmonic oscillator with displacement operators, and with a combination of displacement and squeeze operators., Comment: Similar to the version published in Entropy

We develop a model in which presence of entanglement in a quantum system can be confirmed through coarse observations of the environment surrounding the system. This counter-intuitive effect becomes possible when interaction between the system and its environment is proportional to an observable being an entanglement witness. While presenting intuitive examples we show that: i) a cloud of an ideal gas, when subject to a linear potential coupled with the entanglement witness, accelerates in the direction dictated by the sign of the witness; ii) when the environment is a radiation field, the direction of dielectric polarization depends on the presence of entanglement; iii) quadratures of electromagnetic field in a cavity coupled with two qubits (or a four-level atom) are displaced in the same manner.

The formulation of models describing quantum versions of heat engines plays an important role in the quest toward establishing the laws of thermodynamics in the quantum regime. Of particular importance is the description of stroke-based engines which can operate at finite-time. In this paper we put forth a framework for describing stroboscopic, two-stroke engines, in generic quantum chains. The framework is a generalization of the so-called SWAP engine and is based on a collisional model, which alternates between pure heat and pure work strokes. The transient evolution towards a limit-cycle is also fully accounted for. Moreover, we show that once the limit-cycle has been reached, the energy of the internal sites of the chain no longer changes, with the heat currents being associated exclusively to the boundary sites. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that this type of engine offers multiple ways of optimizing the output power, without affecting the efficiency. Finally, we also show that there exists an entire class of models, characterized by a specific type of inter-chain interaction, which always operate at Otto efficiency, irrespective of the operating conditions of the reservoirs.
