Compton scattering by the proton has been measured using the tagged-photon facility at MAMI (Mainz) and the large-acceptance arrangement LARA. The new data are interpreted in terms of dispersion theory based on the SAID-SM99K parameterization of photo-meson amplitudes. It is found that two-pion exchange in the t-channel is needed for a description of the data in the second resonance region. The data are well represented if this channel is modeled by a single pole with mass parameter m(sigma)=600 MeV. The asymptotic part of the spin dependent amplitude is found to be well represented by pi-0-exchange in the t-channel. A backward spin-polarizability of gamma(pi)=(-37.1+-0.6(stat+syst)+-3.0(model))x10^{-4}fm^4 has been determined from data of the first resonance region below 455 MeV. This value is in a good agreement with predictions of dispersion relations and chiral pertubation theory. From a subset of data between 280 and 360 MeV the resonance pion-photoproduction amplitudes were evaluated leading to a E2/M1 multipole ratio of the p-to-Delta radiative transition of EMR(340 MeV)=(-1.7+-0.4(stat+syst)+-0.2(model))%. It was found that this number is dependent on the parameterization of photo-meson amplitudes. With the MAID2K parameterization an E2/M1 multipole ratio of EMR(340 MeV)=(-2.0+-0.4(stat+syst)+-0.2(model))% is obtained.

Compton scattering by the proton has been measured over a wide range covering photon energies 250 MeV < E_\gamma < 800 MeV and photon scattering angles 30^0 < \theta^{lab}_\gamma < 150^0, using the tagged-photon facility at MAMI (Mainz) and the large-acceptance arrangement LARA. The data are in good agreement with the dispersion theory based on the SAID-SM99K parameterization of photo-meson amplitudes. From the subset of data between 280 and 360 MeV the resonance pion-photoproduction amplitudes were evaluated leading to the multipole E2/M1 ratio EMR(340 MeV) =(-1.6 \pm 0.4(stat+syst) \pm 0.2(model)%. From all data below 455 MeV the proton's backward spin polarizability was determined to be \gamma_\pi=(-37.9 \pm 0.6(stat+syst) \pm 3.5(model))x10^{-4}fm^4.

Ceramic flux ,Reciclaje de residuos ,Lodo de boro ,Waste recycling ,Azulejos de gre ,Boron sludge ,Stoneware tile ,Fundente cerámico - Abstract
Waste recycling has become an important issue in the environmental sustainability of mining operations. Beneficiation of borate ores produces a boron-bearing sludge, which utilization in ceramic manufacturing may lower the process energy demand. A case-study was carried out on a sludge coming from the processed ore of an evaporite located at the Tincalayu mine in the Salta province, Argentina. The use in vitrified tiles of this sludge was appraised addressing key-points in processing and product performances. The sludge was added to stoneware batches (up to 10% wt.) and tested at the laboratory scale. It consists of feldspars, quartz, illite and chlorite, plus ulexite (6.4% B2O3) that turns this sludge into a powerful flux. The waste had a minor effect during milling but allowed an improved compaction. The reactivity during firing was increased: the maximum temperature can be reduced from 1200 degrees C down to 1140 degrees C, according to the amount of sludge added. Stoneware tiles have a suitable technical performance, but the sludge tends to lower bulk density and increase closed porosity. Although the influence on phase composition is apparently limited, the sludge can significantly change the melt composition (enriched in boron and alkaline-earth oxides) which governs the sintering behavior. The actual amount of boron sludge recyclable in vitrified tiles is up to 5% by weight.

- Abstract
Background and aim: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the degree of glycaemic control and the frequency of diabetic complications in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). Methods and results: Questionnaires investigating the organisation of diabetes care centres, individuals’ clinical and metabolic features and pump technology and its management were sent to adult and paediatric diabetes centres that use CSII for treatment in Italy. Information on standard clinical variables, demographic data and acute and chronic diabetic complications was derived from local clinical management systems. The sample consisted of 6623 people with diabetes, which was obtained from 93 centres. Of them, 98.8% had type 1 diabetes mellitus, 57.2% were female, 64% used a conventional insulin pump and 36% used a sensor-augmented insulin pump. The median glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 60 mmol/mol (7.6%). The HbA1c target (i.e. <58 mmol/mol for age <18 years and [removed]18 years) was achieved in 43.4% of paediatric and 23% of adult participants. Factors such as advanced pump functions, higher rate of sensor use, pregnancy in the year before the study and longer duration of diabetes were associated with lower HbA1c levels. The most common chronic complications occurring in diabetes were retinopathy, microalbuminuria and hypertension. In the year before the study, 5% of participants reported ≥1 episode of severe hypoglycaemic (SH) episodes (SH) and 2.6% reported ≥1 episode of ketoacidosis. Conclusions: Advanced personal skills and use of sensor-based pump are associated with better metabolic control outcomes in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with CSII. The reduction in SH episodes confirms the positive effect of CSII on hypoglycaemia. Clinical trial registration number: NCT 02620917 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

This study reconstructs the regional vegetation and climate dynamics between the upper Late Pleistocene and Holocene around Pian del Lago, a coastal mountain marshland located at 831 m asl in western Liguria (NW-Italy), based on the pollen analysis of a 13 m-long sediment core. The record provided a unique opportunity to study a poorly documented period in northern Italy and across many parts of southwestern Europe. We propose an event stratigraphy based upon the identification of seven interstadials (NAI-7 to NAI-1) spanning the upper Late Pleistocene. The correlation with other terrestrial records in Italy, and with Mediterranean marine sequences and the Greenland ice cores, permitted a coherent reconstruction of main environmental changes from >∼43,000 cal. BP. Significantly, the pollen record indicates the persistence of a mesophilous mountain vegetation cover, mainly composed of Quercus (deciduous and evergreen), Abies, Fagus and Alnus over the whole time period recorded. At the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and during the Late Wurm Lateglacial, despite the presence of steppic vegetation composed of Artemisia, woodlands dominated by Pinus, with Abies, Picea, Fagus, Alnus and Betula are present. This forest composition provides an important insight into the history of Picea in southern Europe and Late Pleistocene refugia for mesophilous species. During the Early Holocene, Pinus is first replaced by Abies and then by deciduous Quercus and mixed temperate species as the dominant forest component. Both arboreal and herbaceous anthropogenic pollen indicators only make their appearance during the Late Holocene, attesting to the increasing importance of human activities.

Rice blast is a pervasive and devastating disease that threatens rice production across the world. In spite of its importance to global food security, however, the underlying biology of plant infection by the blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae remains poorly understood. In particular, it is unclear how the fungus elaborates a specialised infection cell, the appressorium, in response to surface signals from the rice leaf. Here, we report the identification of a network of temporally co-regulated transcription factors that act downstream of the Pmk1 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway to regulate gene expression during appressorium-mediated plant infection. We have functionally characterised this network of transcription factors and demonstrated the operation of a hierarchical transcriptional control system. We show that this tiered regulatory mechanism involves Pmk1-dependent phosphorylation of the Hox7 homeobox transcription factor, which represses hyphal-associated gene expression and simultaneously induces major physiological changes required for appressorium development, including cell cycle arrest, autophagic cell death, turgor generation and melanin biosynthesis. Mst12 then regulates gene functions involved in septin-dependent cytoskeletal re-organisation, polarised exocytosis and effector gene expression necessary for plant tissue invasion.

Background: Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is increasing worldwide, mostly because of improved technology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current status of CSII in Italy. Materials and Methods: Physicians from 272 diabetes centers received a questionnaire investigating clinical features, pump technology, and management of patients on CSII. Results: Two hundred seventeen centers (79.8%) joined the study and, by the end of April 2013, gave information about 10,152 patients treated with CSII: 98.2% with type 1 diabetes mellitus, 81.4% adults, 57% female, and 61% with a conventional pump versus 39% with a sensor-augmented pump. CSII advanced functions were used by 68% of patients, and glucose sensors were used 12 days per month on average. Fifty-eight percent of diabetes centers had more than 20 patients on CSII, but there were differences among centers and among regions. The main indication for CSII was poor glucose control. Dropout was mainly due to pump wearability or nonoptimal glycemic control. Twenty-four hour assistance was guaranteed in 81% of centers. A full diabetes team (physician+ nurse + dietician + psychologist) was available in 23% of adult-care diabetes centers and in 53%of pediatric diabetes units. Conclusions: CSII keeps increasing in Italy. More work is needed to ensure uniform treatment strategies throughout the country and to improve pump use.

The aim of this chapter is to overview the many different uses (actual and potential) of zeolites and MCs in the construction sector, considering the environmental benefit of their incorporation into building materials. This chapter does not deal with undeliberated use, as that known in traditional pozzolanic materials (where the occurrence of zeolites or MCs was not known, e.g., in Roman times) or for calcined clays, for example, cocciopesto mortars, which were not designed by intentional modification of clay properties.

41. Sequences in the Landscape. Sacri Monti as Early Picturesque devices

- Abstract
Sacri Monti, or Holy Mountains, are an Italian Catholic invention dating back to the late fifteenth century and then spread through all the world. They are devotional paths in landscape, composed by a series of chapels which narrate the life of Jesus or a Saint. As Sergei Eisenstein wrote, the Sacri Monti are perfect examples of cinematic sequences arranged in the real, physical landscape. Despite that, the studies conducted on them from an architectural perspective are just a few, and the majority failed in conducting a proper analysis of the design method on which they are based on.

However, response is variable, and no predictive markers have been validated. The amplification of 13q31–34 seemed to distinguish between nonresponders and responders to NCRT. The miR-17-92a-1 cluster host gene (MIR17HG), which is involved in the development, progression, and aggressiveness of colorectal cancer, and the ABCC4 gene, an ATP-binding cassette transporter, are located at this region. Moreover, the transcription factor c-Myc is closely related to MIR17HG. The aim of this study was to examine the role of MIR17HG, ABCC4, and CMYC gene copy numbers (CNs) in determining response to NCRT. We analyzed DNA CN of pretherapy biopsies from 108 LARC patients and the expression of microRNA (miR)-17, miR-18a, miR-19a, miR-19b-1, miR-20a, and miR-92a-1 in 34 biopsies. MIR17HG, CMYC, and ABCC4 gene CNs were frequently altered in pretreatment tumors, amplification being the most frequent alteration. With regard to response to therapy, 41% of responders showed MIR17HG deletion, while MIR17HG amplification was observed in 41% of nonresponders. With regard to pathological T stage (ypT), a higher percentage of ypT3–4 than ypT0–2 tumors showed MIR17HG amplification. Finally, a higher, albeit nonsignificant, variability in the expression of MIR17HG cluster members was detected in nonresponders compared to responders. No association was observed between clinical pathological parameters and ABCC4 or CMYC CN. Our data did not highlight a significant association between MIR17HG, CMYC, and ABCC4 gene CNs and response to NCRT in LARC. However, MIR17HG gene amplification would seem to be related to a lack of response. Evaluation of the expression of MIR17HG cluster members is warranted in a larger case series, together with functional studies, to evaluate the potential of this gene as a new predictive marker. Keywords: rectal cancer, neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, gene copy number, MIR17HG, ABCC4, CMYC

In the building sector, over recent years it is ever more important the development of new solutions to improve energy efficiency and savings, particularly due to the demanding EU directive. The implementation of ventilated façades, on new and existing buildings, offers the possibility to reduce costs and promote the acoustic and thermal insulation. The thermal behavior of the external layer influences the building performances: for this purpose a ceramic foam based device was studies. The ceramic formulation was defined in order to be easily integrated within the existing tilesproduction process. Furthermore, a waste glass was added in order to evaluate recyclability and feasibility for ceramic foams. Given by the key role played by the porosity into the thermal conductibility definition, the effect of composition and process parameters on the ceramic properties were studied and optimized. The obtained materials were also thermally characterized. In order to achieve an higher thermal inertia, the possibility to incorporate a Phase Change Material into the ceramic body was investigated. The effect of different methodology of PCM-integration were compared, in order to pointing out the role of its dispersion into the definition of thermal behavior. A lab- size scale-up process was also performed until the demo obtaining.
