Abstract

The angular dependence of proton-proton correlation functions is studied in central $^{40}Ca+^{40}Ca$ and $^{48}Ca+^{48}Ca$ nuclear reactions at E=80 MeV/A. Measurements were performed with the HiRA detector complemented by the 4$\pi$ Array at NSCL. A striking angular dependence in the laboratory frame is found within p-p correlation functions for both systems that greatly exceeds the measured and expected isospin dependent difference between the neutron-rich and neutron-deficient systems. Sources measured at backward angles reflect the participant zone of the reaction, while much larger sources observed at forward angles reflect the expanding, fragmenting and evaporating projectile remnants. The decrease of the size of the source with increasing momentum is observed at backward angles while a weaker trend in the opposite direction is observed at forward angles. Abstract

The characteristics of intermediate mass fragments (IMFs: 3<=Z<=20) produced in mid-peripheral and central collisions are compared. We compare IMFs detected at mid-velocity with those evaporated from the excited projectile-like fragment (PLF*). On average, the IMFs produced at mid-velocity are larger in atomic number, exhibit broader transverse velocity distributions, and are more neutron-rich as compared to IMFs evaporated from the PLF*. In contrast, comparison of mid-velocity fragments associated with mid-peripheral and central collisions reveals that their characteristics are remarkably similar despite the difference in impact parameter. The characteristics of mid-velocity fragments are consistent with low-density formation of the fragments. Neutron deficient isotopes of even Z elements manifest higher kinetic energies than heavier isotopes of the same element for both PLF* and mid-velocity emission. This result may be due to the decay of long-lived excited states in the field of the emitting system., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

A new method to examine the time scale of particle emission from hot nuclei is explored. Excited projectile-like and target-like fragments decay as they separate following a peripheral heavy-ion collision. Their mutual Coulomb influence results in an anisotropic angular distribution of emitted particles, providing a measure of the particle emission time scale. Abstract

Projectile-like fragments (PLF:15<=Z<=46) formed in peripheral and mid-peripheral collisions of 114Cd projectiles with 92Mo nuclei at E/A=50 MeV have been detected at very forward angles, 2.1 deg.<=theta_lab<=4.2 deg. Calorimetric analysis of the charged particles observed in coincidence with the PLF reveals that the excitation of the primary PLF is strongly related to its velocity damping. Furthermore, for a given V_PLF*, its excitation is not related to its size, Z_PLF*. For the largest velocity damping, the excitation energy attained is large, approximately commensurate with a system at the limiting temperature, Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The defining characteristics of fragment emission resulting from the non-central collision of 114Cd ions with 92Mo target nuclei at E/A = 50 MeV are presented. Charge correlations and average relative velocities for mid-velocity fragment emission exhibit significant differences when compared to standard statistical decay. These differences associated with similar velocity dissipation are indicative of the influence of the entrance channel dynamics on the fragment production process.

Isotope ratios of fragments produced at mid-rapidity in peripheral and central collisions of 114Cd ions with 92Mo and 98Mo target nuclei at E/A = 50 MeV are compared. Neutron-rich isotopes are preferentially produced in central collisions as compared to peripheral collisions. The influence of the size (A), density, N/Z, E*/A, and Eflow/A of the emitting source on the measured isotope ratios was explored by comparison with a statistical model (SMM). Abstract

Little is known about distinct factors linked with acting on paraphilic interests or refraining from engaging in paraphilic behaviors. Participants from Canada and the United States (N = 744), aged 19–42 years (M = 29.2; SD = 3.18), were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Participants completed questionnaires about their paraphilic interests and behaviors, as well as potential key factors linked to behavioral engagement (i.e., perceptions of consent, sexual excitation/inhibition, impulsivity, moral disengagement, empathy). Results indicated that higher moral disengagement and impulsivity, lower sexual control (i.e., high sexual excitation, low sexual inhibition), and maladaptive understandings of consent were best able to differentiate individuals who reported highly stigmatized (e.g., hebephilia, pedophilia, coprophilia) or Bondage and Dicipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism(BDSM)/Fetish paraphilic interests and engagement in the paraphilic behaviours associated with these interests relative to individuals who did not report such paraphilic interests or behaviors. Moreover, higher moral disengagement, impulsivity, and maladaptive perceptions of consent were best able to differentiate non-consensual paraphilic interests and behaviours (e.g., voyeurism, exhibitionism) compared to individuals who did not report these paraphilic interests or behaviours. These results provide future directions for the exploration of mechanisms that may contribute to engagement in paraphilic behaviors and may be targets for intervention aimed at preventing engagement in potentially harmful paraphilias. Abstract

We have designed and built a modified Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging system for monitoring the dose delivered by proton and [Gamma]-ray radiotherapy beams. By measuring the amount and ratio of the beam-induced positron-emitting activity, the dose distribution and tissue composition may be determined. The system utilizes fast LeCroy ECLine electronics and a VME multinode transputer based frontend. Utilizing a transputer based filter, positron annihilation events containing timing, energy, and position information will be filtered in real-time at event rates of up to 40 kHz. This will result in only valid events being transmitted back to the host for further analysis and display, reducing both storage media requirements and image reconstruction time. At these rates proton radiotherapy beams may be monitored between beam pulses for on-line range verification. It will also be possible to perform bloodflow studies on tumors using the activity induced by a [Gamma]-ray radiotherapy beam. Future electronic developments will allow event rates up to roughly 80 kHz. For both treatment modalities, determination of the composition of tumors will directly affect treatment planning through compensation for oxygen enhancement effects to the dose.

Abstract

We describe the dataflow of a nuclear physics data acquisition system. The system features a high speed active routing subsystem which allows an arbitrary number of data producers to contribute data to the system. Data are then routed to an arbitrary number of data consumers. Low overhead route-by-reference mechanisms are used to allow high rate operations. The system has been ported to a variety of [UNIX.sup.tm] systems. Timings are given for the routing component of the system on several systems. Finally, we give an example of a set of programs which can be added to the system to produce a complete data acquisition system.

SOME CASES OF EMOTIONAL MALADJUSTMENT AND UNDERACHIEVEMENT HAVE BEEN A RESULT OF POOR STUDENT PLACEMENT WITH CERTAIN TYPES OF TEACHERS. IF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS COULD BE TESTED THROUGH THE USE OF A FLEXIBILITY-RIGIDITY SCORE, THEIR BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS COULD BE MATCHED AND THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT IMPROVED. FLEXIBILITY, IN A CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT, IS THE ABILITY TO ADJUST RAPIDLY TO CHANGING CONDITIONS, RIGIDITY IS A FORM OF NEGATIVE TRANSFER. EXPERIMENTAL TESTS COULD BE ADMINISTERED TO SIXTH-GRADE STUDENTS AND SEVENTH-GRADE TEACHERS TO PROPERLY PLACE THE STUDENTS IN THE SEVENTH GRADE. THE TESTS WOULD UTILIZE SUBJECT MATTER RULES TO SOLVE PROBLEMS, AND NORMS OF FLEXIBILITY-RIGIDITY WOULD BE ESTABLISHED. SOME OF THE PROBLEMS ON THE TESTS COULD BE SOLVED IF THE RULES WERE NOT APPLIED, THE PERSONS WHO DID APPLY RULES TO THESE PROBLEMS WOULD BE EXHIBITING RIGID BEHAVIOR AN EXPERIMENTAL CLASSROOM COULD BE ESTABLISHED. THE UPPER AND LOWER 20 PERCENT OF THE PUPILS, AS MEASURED BY THE FLEXIBILITY-RIGIDITY NORMS, WOULD BE ASSIGNED TO THE TEACHER RECEIVING CORRESPONDING SCORES. A PROGNOSTIC INSTRUMENT WOULD BE DEVELOPED AS A RESULT OF THE PROPOSED EXPERIMENT. Abstract

A new parallel processing frontend for data acquisition has been designed and built at NSCL. This system, using inmos T800 transputers, is designed to add the capacity of realtime data filtering to the normal operations of NSCL frontends and improve overall performance. The initial system is designed for 5 transputers linked to a SUN host system via transputer links. A prototype system with one node is currently used as the data acquisition system for the NSCL 4[pi] detector. The multinode system has been installed and tested. Filter software is under development.

Abstract

A new method to examine the time scale of particle emission from hot nuclei is explored. Excited projectile-like and target-like fragments decay as they separate following a peripheral heavy-ion collision. Their mutual Coulomb influence results in an anisotropic angular distribution of emitted particles, providing a measure of the particle emission time scale. Predictions of a schematic evaporation model are presented and compared to experimental data., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) has been implicated in schizophrenia by its function through its roles in monoamine neurotransmitter metabolism and its impact on prefrontal cognition, and also by its position through linkage scans and a strong cytogenetic association. Further support comes from association studies, especially family-based ones examining the COMT variant, Val108/158Met. We have studied eight markers spanning COMT and including portions of the two immediately adjacent genes, thioredoxin reductase 2 and armadillo repeat deleted in velocardiofacial syndrome (ARVCF), using association testing in 136 schizophrenia families. We found nominal evidence for association of illness to rs165849 (P=0.051) in ARVCF, and a stronger signal (global P=0.0019-0.0036) from three-marker haplotypes spanning the 3'portions of COMT and ARVCF, including Val108/158Met with Val108/158 being the overtransmitted allele, consistent with previous studies. We also find Val108/158Met to be in linkage disequilibrium with the markers in ARVCF. These findings support previous association signals of schizophrenia to COMT markers, and suggest that ARVCF might contribute to this signal.
