In this study, we present a suite of high-resolution numerical simulations of an isolated galaxy to test a sub-grid framework to consistently follow the formation and dissociation of H2 with non-equilibrium chemistry. The latter is solved via the package KROME, coupled to the meshless hydrodynamic code GIZMO. We include the effect of star formation (SF), modelled with a physically motivated prescription independent of H2, supernova feedback and mass-losses from low-mass stars, extragalactic and local stellar radiation, and dust and H2 shielding, to investigate the emergence of the observed correlation betweenH2 and SF rate surface densities. We present two different sub-grid models and compare them with on-the-fly radiative transfer (RT) calculations, to assess the main differences and limits of the different approaches. We also discuss a sub-grid clumping factor model to enhance the H2 formation, consistent with our SF prescription, which is crucial, at the achieved resolution, to reproduce the correlation with H2. We find that both sub-grid models perform very well relative to the RT simulation, giving comparable results, with moderate differences, but at much lower computational cost.We also find that, while the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation for the total gas is not strongly affected by the different ingredients included in the simulations, the H2-based counterpart is much more sensitive, because of the crucial role played by the dissociating radiative flux and the gas shielding. We present constraints on the molecular outflows in a sample of five hyperluminous infrared galaxies using Herschel observations of the OH doublet at 119 μm. We have detected the OH doublet in three cases: one purely in emission and two purely in absorption. The observed emission profile has a significant blueshifted wing suggesting the possibility of tracing an outflow. Out of the two absorption profiles, one seems to be consistent with the systemic velocity while the other clearly indicates the presence of a molecular outflow whose maximum velocity is about ~1500 km s-1. Our analysis shows that this system is in general agreement with previous results on ultraluminous infrared galaxies and QSOs, whose outflow velocities do not seem to correlate with stellar masses or starburst luminosities (star formation rates). In this work we present IRAM 30-m telescope observations of a sample of bulge-dominated galaxies with large dust lanes, which have had a recent minor merger. We find these galaxies are very gas rich, with H2 masses between 4 × 108 and 2 × 1010 M☉. We use these molecular gas masses, combined with atomic gas masses from an accompanying paper, to calculate gas-to-dust and gas-to-stellar-mass ratios. The gas-to-dust ratios of our sample objects vary widely (between ≈50 and 750), suggesting many objects have low gas-phase metallicities, and thus that the gas has been accreted through a recent merger with a lower mass companion. We calculate the implied minor companion masses and gas fractions, finding a median predicted stellar mass ratio of ≈40:1. The minor companion likely had masses between ≈107 and 1010 M☉. The implied merger mass ratios are consistent with the expectation for low-redshift gas-rich mergers from simulations. We then go on to present evidence that (no matter which star formation rate indicator is used) our sample objects have very low star formation efficiencies (star formation rate per unit gas mass), lower even than the early-type galaxies from ATLAS3D which already show a suppression. This suggests that minor mergers can actually suppress star formation activity. We discuss mechanisms that could cause such a suppression, include dynamical effects induced by the minor merger. Recent CO measurements of an essentially complete subsample of galaxies from the SCUBA Local Universe Survey (SLUGS) are used to examine their implications for dust and gas masses in this sample. Estimates of dust masses are affected by a contribution to the SCUBA brightness measurements by CO(3–2) emission, and molecular gas masses by the use of a modified value of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor X . The average dust mass is reduced by 25–38 per cent, which has no bearing on earlier conclusions concerning the shape of the dust mass luminosity function derived from the SLUGS. The value of X found from the CO survey, when applied together with the reduction in dust masses, leads to lower estimates for the mean gas-to-dust mass ratios, where the gas includes both H2 and H i . For the CO sample, the mean global ratio is reduced from approximately 430 to about 320–360, but is further reduced to values near 50 when applied to the nuclear regions relevant to the CO observations. We discuss these results and suggest that the differences between the nuclear and outer regions may simply reflect differences in metallicity or the existence of considerable amounts of unobserved cold dust in the outer regions of these galaxies.
