Fractional magnetisation plateaus, in which the magnetisation is pinned at a fraction of its saturated value within a range of external magnetic field, are spectacular macroscopic manifestations of the collective quantum behaviours. One prominent example of the plateau phase is found in spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnets featuring strong geometrical frustration, and is often interpreted as quantum-fluctuation-stabilised state in magnetic field via the "order-by-disorder" mechanism. Here, we observe an unprecedented 1/3 magnetisation plateau between 5.2 and 7.4 T at 2 K in a spin-1 antiferromagnet Na$_3$Ni$_2$BiO$_6$ with a honeycomb lattice, where conventionally no geometrical frustration is anticipated. By carrying out elastic neutron scattering measurements, we propose the spin structure of the plateau phase to be an unusual partial spin-flop ferrimagnetic order, transitioning from the zigzag antiferromagnetic order in zero field. Our theoretical calculations show that the plateau phase is stabilised by the bond-anisotropic Kitaev interaction. Interactions of collective excitations often lead to rich emergent phenomena in many-particle quantum systems. In ordered magnets, the elementary excitations are spin waves (magnons), which obey Bose-Einstein statistics. Similar to the Cooper pairs in superconductors, magnons can be paired into bound states under attractive interactions. Even more interestingly, the Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field acts as a chemical potential that can tune the particle density through a quantum critical point (QCP), beyond which a ``hidden order'' is predicted to exist. However, experimental confirmation of this QCP and the associated new state of matter remain elusive. Here we report direct observation of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of the two-magnon bound state in Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$. Comprehensive thermodynamic measurements confirmed the existence of a two-dimensional BEC-QCP at the saturation field. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to accurately establish the magnetic exchange model. An exact solution of the model found stable 2-magnon bound states that were further confirmed by an electron spin resonance (ESR) experiment, demonstrating that the QCP is due to the pair condensation and the phase below saturation field is the long-sought-after spin nematic (SN) phase., Comment: 53 pages, 28 figures

We report neutron-scattering measurements of the density of states (DOS) of water and liquid Fomblin in a wide range of temperatures. In the liquid phase, we confirm the presence of a universal low-energy linear scaling of the experimental DOS as a function of the frequency, $g(\omega)= a(T) \omega$, which persists at all temperatures. The low-frequency scaling of the DOS exhibits a sharp jump at the melting point of water, below which the standard Debye's law, $g(\omega) \propto \omega^2$, is recovered. On the contrary, in Fomblin, we observe a continuous transition between the two exponents reflecting its glassy dynamics, which is confirmed by structure measurements. More importantly, in both systems, we find that the slope $a(T)$ grows with temperature following an exponential Arrhenius-like form, $a(T) \propto \exp(-\langle E \rangle /T)$. We confirm this experimental trend using molecular dynamics simulations and show that the prediction of instantaneous normal mode (INM) theory for $a(T)$ is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data., Comment: v3: revised manuscript

The rare-earth perovskite TbScO$_3$ has been widely used as a substrate for the growth of epitaxial ferroelectric and multiferroic thin films, while its detailed low-temperature magnetic properties were rarely reported. In this paper, we performed detailed magnetization, specific heat and single crystal neutron scattering measurements, along with the crystalline electric field calculations to study the low-temperature magnetic properties of TbScO$_3$. All our results suggest the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ has an Ising-like pseudo-doublet ground state at low temperatures. Due to the constrain of local point symmetry, these Tb$^{3+}$ Ising moments are confined in the $ab$ plane with a tilt angle of $\varphi = \pm48^{\mathrm{o}}$ to the $a$ axis. In zero field, the system undergoes an antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=2.53$ K, and forms a $G_xA_y$ noncollinear magnetic structure below $T_{\mathrm{N}}$. We find the dipole-dipole interactions play an important role to determine the magnetic ground state, which are also responsible for the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in TbScO$_3$. The significant anisotropic diffuse scatterings further confirm the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism along the $c$ axis. The magnetic phase diagram with the field along the easy $b$ axis is well established. In addition to the $G_xA_y$ antiferromagnetic state, there is an exotic field-induced phase emerged near the critical field $B_{\mathrm{c}}\simeq0.7$ T, where three-dimensional magnetic order is suppressed but strong one-dimensional correlations may still exist., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Cobaltates with 3$d$ based layered honeycomb structure were recently proposed as Kitaev magnets and putative candidates to host the long-sought Kitaev spin liquid. Here we present inelastic neutron scattering results down to 50 mK for powder samples of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, with high resolution in regions of low momentum and energy transfers. We compare the experimental data below the antiferromagnetic zigzag ordering temperature with dynamical structure factors obtained within spin wave theory. We search the wide parameter range of a $K$-$J_1$-$\Gamma$-$\Gamma^{\prime}$-$J_3$ spin 1/2 model and identify the best fits to constant momentum cuts of the inelastic neutron data. The powder average limits the selection of a unique parameter set for each material, but we see clear trends towards ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange in both compounds, and ratios $|K/J_1|$ could be as large as $5\ldots 25$; in contrast, antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange cannot be ruled out, but requires a fine-tuning of all involved spin exchange couplings with only moderate ratio $|K/J_1| \sim 1$. Nowadays the world is facing a prominent paradox regarding thermal energy. The production of heat accounts for more than 50% of global final energy consumption while the waste heat potential analysis reveals that 72% of the global primary energy consumption is lost after conversion mainly in the form of heat. Towards global decarbonization, it is of vital importance to establish a solution to thermal energy utilization under full control. Here, we propose and realize an unprecedented concept -- barocaloric thermal batteries based on the inverse colossal barocaloric effect of NH4SCN. Thermal charging is initialized upon pressurization through an order-to-disorder phase transition below 364 K and in turn the discharging of 43 J g-1, which are eleven times more than the input mechanical energy, occurs on demand at depressurization at lower temperatures. The discharging is also manifested as a directly measured temperature rise of 12 K. The thermodynamic equilibrium nature of the pressure-restrained heat-carrying phase guarantees stable storage and/or transport over a variety of temporal and/or spatial scales. Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are an exotic state of matter that is subject to extensive research. However, the relationship between the ubiquitous disorder and the QSL behaviors is still unclear. Here, by performing comparative experimental studies on two kagom\'{e}-lattice QSL candidates, Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, which are isostructural to each other but with strong and weak structural disorder, respectively, we show unambiguously that the disorder can induce spin-liquid-like features. In particular, both compounds show dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of -17.4 and -28.7 K for Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, respectively, but remain disordered down to about 0.05 K. Specific heat results suggest the presence of gapless magnetic excitations characterized by a residual linear term. Magnetic excitation spectra obtained by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) at low temperatures display broad continua. All these observations are consistent with those of a QSL. However, we find in Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ which has strong disorder resulting from the random mixing of the magnetic Tm$^{3+}$ and nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$, that the low-energy magnetic excitations observed in the specific heat and INS measurements are substantially enhanced, compared to those of Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$ which has much less disorder. We believe that the effective spins of the Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the Zn$^{2+}$/Mg$^{2+}$ sites give rise to the low-energy magnetic excitations, and the amount of the random occupancy determines the excitation strength. First-order magnetic transitions are of both fundamental and technological interest given that a number of emergent phases and functionalities are thereby created. Of particular interest are giant magnetocaloric effects, which are attributed to first-order magnetic transitions and have attracted broad attention for solid-state refrigeration applications. While the conventional wisdom is that atomic lattices play an important role in first-order magnetic transitions, a coherent microscopic description of the lattice and spin degrees of freedom is still lacking. Here, we study the magnetic phase transition dynamics on the intermetallic LaFe13-xSix, which is one of the most classical giant magnetocaloric systems, in both frequency and time domains utilizing neutron scattering and ultrafast X-ray diffraction. We have observed a strong magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic state preceding the first-order magnetic transition, corresponding to picosecond ferromagnetic fluctuations. Upon photon-excitation, the ferromagnetic state is completely suppressed in 0.9 ps and recovered in 20 ps. The ultrafast dynamics suggest that the magnetic degree of freedom dominates this magnetoelastic transition and ferromagnetic fluctuations might be universally relevant for this kind of compounds., Comment: 5 figures in the main text, plus supplementary information

The low-energy magnetic excitation from the highly Ca-doped quasi-one-dimensional magnet SrCa13Cu24O41 was studied in the magnetic ordered state by using inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the gapless spin-wave excitation, dispersive along the a and c axes but nondispersive along the b axis. Such excitations are attributed to the spin wave from the spin-chain sublattice. Model fitting to the experimental data gives the nearest-neighbour interaction Jc as 5.4 meV and the interchain interaction Ja = 4.4 meV. Jc is antiferromagnetic and its value is close to the nearest-neighbour interactions of the similar edge-sharing spin-chain systems such as CuGeO3. Comparing with the hole-doped spin chains in Sr14Cu24O41, which shows a spin gap due to spin dimers formed around Zhang-Rice singlets, the chains in SrCa13Cu24O41 show a gapless excitation in this study. We ascribe such a change from gapped to gapless excitations to holes transferring away from the chain sublattice into the ladder sublattice upon Ca doping.

The elucidation of the pseudogap phenomenon of the cuprates, a set of anomalous physical properties below the characteristic temperature T* and above the superconducting transition temperature Tc, has been a major challenge in condensed matter physics for the past two decades. Following initial indications of broken time-reversal symmetry in photoemission experiments, recent polarized neutron diffraction work demonstrated the universal existence of an unusual magnetic order below T*. These findings have the profound implication that the pseudogap regime constitutes a genuine new phase of matter rather than a mere crossover phenomenon. They are furthermore consistent with a particular type of order involving circulating orbital currents, and with the notion that the phase diagram is controlled by a quantum critical point. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering results for HgBa2CuO4+x (Hg1201) that reveal a fundamental collective magnetic mode associated with the unusual order, and that further support this picture. The mode's intensity rises below the same temperature T* and its dispersion is weak, as expected for an Ising-like order parameter. Its energy of 52-56 meV and its enormous integrated spectral weight render it a new candidate for the hitherto unexplained ubiquitous electron-boson coupling features observed in spectroscopic studies., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, with supplementary information and figures
