Abstract

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $\Sigma^-$, $\pi^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $\lambda$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A search for narrow Theta(1540)^+, a candidate for pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, has been performed in an exclusive proton-induced reaction p+C(N) \to Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 + C(N) on carbon nuclei or quasifree nucleons at E_{beam}=70 GeV (sqrt{s} = 11.5 GeV) studying nK^+, pK_S and pK_L decay channels of Theta(1540)^+ in four different final states of the Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 system. In order to assess the quality of the identification of the final states with neutron or K_L we reconstructed Lambda(1520)\to nK_S and phi\to K_LK_S decays in the calibration reactions p+C(N)\to Lambda(1520)K^+ + C(N) and p+C(N)\to p\phi + C(N). We found no evidence for narrow pentaquark peak in any of the studied final states and decay channels. Assuming that the production characteristics of the Theta^+ \bar{K^0} system are not drastically different from those of the Lambda(1520)K^+ and p\phi systems, we established upper limits on the cross section ratios sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(Lambda(1520)K^+) < 0.02 and sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(p\phi) < 0.15 at 90% CL and a preliminary upper limit for the forward hemisphere cross section sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0) < 30 nb/nucleon., Comment: 14 pages; 16 figures. Abstract

The radiative decay \Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma was measured directly in the study of exclusive diffractive-like reaction p + N --> \Lambda(1520) K^+ + N, \Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma with the SPHINX spectrometer. The values of the branching and partial width of this radiative decay were obtained: BR[\Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma] = (1.02+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.15(syst))x10^{-2} and \Gamma[\Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma] = 159+/-33(stat)+/-26(syst) keV., Comment: More detailed treatment of systematical uncertainties, minor clarifications and corrections, significant improvements in English. 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Phys.Lett.B

Abstract

Coherent Lambda pi- production on Pb of 600 GeV Sigma- hyperons has been studied with the SELEX facility at Fermilab. Abstract

Coherent pi^+pi^-pi^- production in the interactions of a beam of 600 GeV pi^- mesons with C, Cu and Pb nuclei has been studied with the SELEX facility (Experiment E781 at Fermilab). Abstract

The aim of the paper: to identify promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of pathological processes development based on the red blood cell membrane morphology and nanostructure in patients with brain disorders in the Intensive Care Unit.Materials and methods. The study included 24 patients from the anesthesiology and resuscitation ward of the Federal Research and Clinical Center of Intensive Care Medicine and Rehabilitology. Blood was acquired from the patients for standard tests, and all further tests were performed in vitro. The images of red blood cells were obtained using the atomic force microscope «NTEGRA Рrima» (NT-MDT, Russia) in semi-contact mode.Results. Patients from the anesthesiology and intensive care ward with traumatic brain injury, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, cerebral edema, and post-hypoxic encephalopathy had different blood cell shapes and localized defects of different topology on the surface of erythrocyte membranes including defects of pallor, torus, and nanostructure.Conclusion. In this pilot study we have shown that several defects represent the trigger mechanisms for the development of a total membrane damage. Local topographic defects of nanostructures and abnormalities of erythrocyte morphology are irreversible. The number and quality of these abnormalities may eventually be used as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of pathological processes., Цель работы. Выявление перспективных диагностических и прогностических биомаркеров развития патологических процессов на основе особенностей морфологии и наноструктуры мембран эритроцитов у пациентов с нарушениями функции головного мозга, находящихся в отделении анестезиологии и реанимации.Материалы и методы. В исследование включили 24 пациента отделения анестезиологии и реанимации ФНКЦ РР. Кровь забирали у данных пациентов для стандартных анализов, и все дальнейшие исследования проводили in vitro. Изображения эритроцитов получали с помощью атомного силового микроскопа «NTEGRA Рrima» (NT-MDT, Россия) в полуконтактном режиме.Результаты. У пациентов отделения анестезиологии и реанимации с черепно-мозговой травмой, ишемическим и геморрагическим инсультом, отеком головного мозга, постгипоксической энцефалопатией имели место различные формы клеток крови, на поверхности мембраны эритроцитов возникали локальные дефекты различной топологии: дефекты пэллора, тора, наноструктуры.Заключение. В данном пилотном исследовании мы показали, что ряд дефектов являются стартовым механизмов развития тотальных повреждений мембран. Локальные топографические дефекты наноструктур, а также нарушения морфологии эритроцитов необратимы. Количество и качество этих нарушений в перспективе могут быть использованы как диагностический и прогностический биомаркер патологических процессов.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2002-09-01 Pion virtual compton scattering (VCS) via the reaction π-e→π-eγ was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c π- beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident π- and the final state π-, electron and γ. Theoretical predictions based on chiral perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (=9) and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The corresponding π- VCS experimental cross section is σ=38.8±13 nb, in agreement with the theoretical expectation of σ=34.7 nb. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2000-07-17 Total cross sections for Σ- and π- on beryllium, carbon, polyethylene and copper as well as total cross sections for protons on beryllium and carbon have been measured in a broad momentum range around 600GeV/c . These measurements were performed with a transmission technique in the SELEX hyperon-beam experiment at Fermilab. We report on results obtained for hadron-nucleus cross sections and on results for σtot(Σ-N) and σtot(π-N) , which were deduced from nuclear cross sections. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
