The discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of Hyperion, a protosupercluster at z ∼ 2.47, provides an unprecedented opportunity to study distant galaxies in the context of their large-scale environment. We carry out deep narrowband imaging of a ≈1° × 1° region around Hyperion and select 157 Lyα emitters (LAEs). The inferred LAE overdensity is δ g ≈ 40 within an effective volume of 30 × 20 × 15 cMpc3, consistent with the fact that Hyperion is composed of multiple protoclusters and will evolve into a supercluster with a total mass of M tot ≈ 1.4 × 1015 M ⊙ at z = 0. The distribution of LAEs closely mirrors that of known spectroscopic members, tracing the protocluster cores and extended filamentary arms connected to them, suggesting that they trace the same large-scale structure. By cross-correlating the LAE positions with H i tomography data, we find weak evidence that LAEs may be less abundant in the highest H i regions, perhaps because Lyα is suppressed in such regions. The Hyperion region hosts a large population of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) ≈ 12 times more abundant than that in the field. The prevalence of AGNs in protocluster regions hints at the possibility that they may be triggered by physical processes that occur more frequently in dense environments, such as galaxy mergers. Our study demonstrates LAEs as reliable markers of the largest cosmic structures. When combined with ongoing and upcoming imaging and spectroscopic surveys, wide-field narrowband imaging has the potential to advance our knowledge in the formation and evolution of cosmic structures and of their galaxy inhabitants.

It has been well established in the local universe that galaxy properties differ based on the large-scale environment in which they reside. As luminous Lyα nebulae have been shown to trace overdense environments at z ∼ 2–3, comparing the properties of galaxies within Lyα nebulae systems to those in the field can provide insight into how and when locally observed trends between galaxy properties and environment emerged. Six Lyα nebulae were discovered at z ∼ 2.3 in a blind search of the GOODS-S extragalactic field, a region also covered by the 3D-HST spectroscopic survey. Utilizing 3D-HST data, we identified 86 galaxies in the vicinity of these nebulae and used statistical tests to compare their physical properties to galaxies elsewhere in the field. Galaxies lying within 320 proper kpc of a Lyα nebula are roughly half a magnitude brighter than those in the field, with higher stellar masses, higher star formation rates, and larger effective radii. Even when considering the effects of sample incompleteness, our study suggests that galaxies in overdensities at z ∼ 2.3 traced by Lyα nebulae are being influenced by their environment. Furthermore, Lyα-nebula-associated galaxies lie on the same main sequence of star formation as field galaxies but have a larger proportion of high-mass galaxies, consistent with the idea that galaxy evolution is accelerated in rich environments. Expanded surveys for Lyα nebulae in other deep extragalactic fields and galaxy spectroscopic follow-up with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will better constrain the demographics of Lyα-nebula-associated galaxies.

We investigate the effects of stellar populations and sizes on Lyα escape in 27 spectroscopically confirmed and 35 photometric Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z ≈ 2.65 in seven fields of the Boötes region of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We use deep HST/WFC3 imaging to supplement ground-based observations and infer key galaxy properties. Compared to typical star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at similar redshifts, the LAEs are less massive (M ⋆ ≈ 107–109 M ⊙), younger (ages ≲1 Gyr), smaller (r e < 1 kpc), and less dust-attenuated (E(B−V) ≤ 0.26 mag) but have comparable star formation rates (SFRs ≈ 1–100 M ⊙ yr−1). Some of the LAEs in the sample may be very young galaxies having low nebular metallicities (Z neb ≲ 0.2 Z ⊙) and/or high ionization parameters ( log ( U ) ≳ − 2.4 ). Motivated by previous studies, we examine the effects of the concentration of star formation and gravitational potential on Lyα escape by computing SFR surface density, ΣSFR, and specific SFR surface density, ΣsSFR. For a given ΣSFR, the Lyα escape fraction is higher for LAEs with lower stellar masses. The LAEs have a higher ΣsSFR, on average, compared to SFGs. Our results suggest that compact star formation in a low gravitational potential yields conditions amenable to the escape of Lyα photons. These results have important implications for the physics of Lyα radiative transfer and for the type of galaxies that may contribute significantly to cosmic reionization.

The MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) is a large collection of high-quality empirical stellar spectra designed to cover all spectral types and ideal for use in the stellar population analysis of galaxies observed in the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. The library contains 59,266 spectra of 24,130 unique stars with spectral resolution $R\sim1800$ and covering a wavelength range of $3,622-10,354$ \r{A}. In this work, we derive five physical parameters for each spectrum in the library: effective temperature ($T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), metalicity ($[Fe/H]$), micro-turbulent velocity ($\log(v_{micro})$), and alpha-element abundance ($[\alpha/Fe]$). These parameters are derived with a flexible data-driven algorithm that uses a neural network model. We train a neural network using the subset of 1,675 MaStar targets that have also been observed in the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), adopting the independently-derived APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundance Pipeline (ASPCAP) parameters for this reference set. For the regions of parameter space not well represented by the APOGEE training set ($7,000 \leq T \leq 30,000$ K), we supplement with theoretical model spectra. We explore the possibility and practical limitations of using a three-line approach to measure both the slope and normalization of the dust attenuation law in individual galaxies. To do this, we focus on a sample of eleven galaxies with existing ground-based Balmer H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ measurements from slit spectra, plus space-based grism constraints on Paschen-$\beta$. When accounting for observational uncertainties, we show that one galaxy has a well-constrained dust law slope and normalization in the range expected from theoretical arguments; this galaxy therefore provides an example of what may be possible in the future. However, most of the galaxies are best-fit by unusually steep or shallow slopes. We then explore whether additional astrophysical effects or observational biases could explain the elevated Paschen-$\beta$/H$\alpha$ ratios driving these results. We find that galaxies with high Paschen-$\beta$/H$\alpha$ ratios may be explained by slightly sub-unity covering fractions ($>$97%). Alternatively, differing slit losses for different lines can have a large impact on the results, emphasizing the importance of measuring all three lines with a consistent spectroscopic aperture. We conclude that while the three-line approach to constraining the shape of the dust attenuation law in individual galaxies is promising, deep observations and a consistent observational strategy will be required to minimize observational biases and to disentangle the astrophysically interesting effect of differing covering fractions. Recent wide-field integral field spectroscopy has revealed the detailed properties of high redshift Lyman-alpha (Lya) nebulae, most often targeted due to the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Here, we use VLT/MUSE to resolve the morphology and kinematics of a nebula initially identified due to strong Lya emission at $z\sim3.2$ (LABn06; Nilsson et al. 2006). Our observations reveal a two-lobed Lya nebula, at least $\sim$173 pkpc in diameter, with a light-weighted centroid near a mid-infrared source (within $\approx$17.2 pkpc) that appears to host an obscured AGN. The Lya emission near the AGN is also coincident in velocity with the kinematic center of the nebula, suggesting that the nebula is both morphologically and kinematically centered on the AGN. Compared to AGN-selected Lya nebulae, the surface brightness profile of this nebula follows a typical exponential profile at large radii ($>$25 pkpc), although at small radii, the profile shows an unusual dip at the location of the AGN. The kinematics and asymmetry are similar to, and the CIV and HeII upper limits are consistent with other AGN-powered Lya nebulae. Double-peaked and asymmetric line profiles suggest that Lya resonant scattering may be important in this nebula. These results support the picture of the AGN being responsible for powering a Lya nebula that is oriented roughly in the plane of the sky. Recent analysis of strongly-lensed sources in the Hubble Frontier Fields indicates that the rest-frame UV luminosity function of galaxies at $z=$6--8 rises as a power law down to $M_\mathrm{UV}=-15$, and possibly as faint as -12.5. We use predictions from a cosmological radiation hydrodynamic simulation to map these luminosities onto physical space, constraining the minimum dark matter halo mass and stellar mass that the Frontier Fields probe. While previously-published theoretical studies have suggested or assumed that early star formation was suppressed in halos less massive than $10^9$--$10^{11} M_\odot$, we find that recent observations demand vigorous star formation in halos at least as massive as (3.1, 5.6, 10.5)$\times10^9 M_\odot$ at $z=(6,7,8)$. Likewise, we find that Frontier Fields observations probe down to stellar masses of (8.1, 18, 32)$\times10^6 M_\odot$; that is, they are observing the likely progenitors of analogues to Local Group dwarfs such as Pegasus and M32. A new but rare sample of spatially extended emission line nebulae, nicknamed "Green Beans", was discovered at z~0.3 thanks to strong [OIII] emission, and subsequently shown to be local cousins of the Lyman-alpha (Lya) nebulae found at high redshift. Here we use follow-up APO/DIS spectroscopy to better understand how these low redshift Lya nebulae compare to other populations of strong emission line sources. Our spectroscopic data show that low-z Lya nebulae have AGN-like emission line ratios, relatively narrow line widths (FWHM, 11 figures, 1 table, accepted to ApJ

Modern spectroscopic surveys produce large spectroscopic databases, generally with sizes well beyond the scope of manual investigation. The need arises, therefore, for an automated line detection method with objective indicators for detection significance. In this paper, we present an automated and objective method for emission line detection in spectroscopic surveys and apply this technique to 1574 spectra, obtained with the Hectospec spectrograph on the MMT Observatory (MMTO), to detect Lyman alpha emitters near z ~ 2.7. The basic idea is to generate on-source (signal plus noise) and off-source (noise only) mock observations using Monte Carlo simulations, and calculate completeness and reliability values, (C, R), for each simulated signal. By comparing the detections from real data with the Monte Carlo results, we assign the completeness and reliability values to each real detection. From 1574 spectra, we obtain 881 raw detections and, by removing low reliability detections, we finalize 649 detections from an automated pipeline. Most of high completeness and reliability detections, (C, R) ~ (1.0, 1.0), are robust detections when visually inspected; the low C and R detections are also marginal on visual inspection. At redshift z = 2, when the Universe was just three billion years old, half of the most massive galaxies were extremely compact and had already exhausted their fuel for star formation(1-4). It is believed that they were formed in intense nuclear starbursts and that they ultimately grew into the most massive local elliptical galaxies seen today, through mergers with minor companions(5,6), but validating this picture requires higher-resolution observations of their centres than is currently possible. Magnification from gravitational lensing offers an opportunity to resolve the inner regions of galaxies(7). Here we report an analysis of the stellar populations and kinematics of a lensed z = 2.1478 compact galaxy, which surprisingly turns out to be a fast-spinning, rotationally supported disk galaxy. Its stars must have formed in a disk, rather than in a merger-driven nuclear starburst(8). The galaxy was probably fed by streams of cold gas, which were able to penetrate the hot halo gas until they were cut off by shock heating from the dark matter halo(9). This result confirms previous indirect indications(10-13) that the first galaxies to cease star formation must have gone through major changes not just in their structure, but also in their kinematics, to evolve into present-day elliptical galaxies., Comment: Nature (June 22, 2017)

Lya nebulae, or "Lya blobs", are extended (up to ~100 kpc), bright (L[Lya] > 10^43 erg/s) clouds of Lya emitting gas that tend to lie in overdense regions at z ~ 2--5. The origin of the Lya emission remains unknown, but recent theoretical work suggests that measuring the polarization might discriminate among powering mechanisms. Here we present the first narrowband, imaging polarimetry of a radio-loud Lya nebula, B3 J2330+3927 at z=3.09, with an embedded active galactic nucleus (AGN). The AGN lies near the blob's Lya emission peak and its radio lobes align roughly with the blob's major axis. With the SPOL polarimeter on the 6.5m MMT telescope, we map the total (Lya + continuum) polarization in a grid of circular apertures of radius 0.6" (4.4kpc), detecting a significant (>2sigma) polarization fraction P in nine apertures and achieving strong upper-limits (as low as 2%) elsewhere. We report the detection of diffuse Ly$\alpha$ emission, or Ly$\alpha$ halos (LAHs), around star-forming galaxies at $z\approx3.78$ and $2.66$ in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey Bo\"otes field. Our samples consist of a total of $\sim$1400 galaxies, within two separate regions containing spectroscopically confirmed galaxy overdensities. They provide a unique opportunity to investigate how the LAH characteristics vary with host galaxy large-scale environment and physical properties. We stack Ly$\alpha$ images of different samples defined by these properties and measure their median LAH sizes by decomposing the stacked Ly$\alpha$ radial profile into a compact galaxy-like and an extended halo-like component. We find that the exponential scale-length of LAHs depends on UV continuum and Ly$\alpha$ luminosities, but not on Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths or galaxy overdensity parameters. The full samples, which are dominated by low UV-continuum luminosity Ly$\alpha$ emitters ($M_{\rm UV} \gtrsim -21$), exhibit LAH sizes of 5$\,-\,6\,$kpc. However, the most UV- or Ly$\alpha$-luminous galaxies have more extended halos with scale-lengths of 7$\,-\,9\,$kpc. The stacked Ly$\alpha$ radial profiles decline more steeply than recent theoretical predictions that include the contributions from gravitational cooling of infalling gas and from low-level star formation in satellites. On the other hand, the LAH extent matches what one would expect for photons produced in the galaxy and then resonantly scattered by gas in an outflowing envelope. The observed trends of LAH sizes with host galaxy properties suggest that the physical conditions of the circumgalactic medium (covering fraction, HI column density, and outflow velocity) change with halo mass and/or star-formation rates., Comment: published in ApJ, minor proof corrections applied

Large nebulae (>50 kpc) emitting strongly in Lya (also known as Lya ``blobs'') are likely signposts of ongoing massive galaxy formation. The relative rarity of these sources and their discovery in well-studied galaxy overdensities suggest that they may be associated with regions of high galaxy density. One of the largest Lya nebulae, discovered at a redshift of z~2.7 via its strong mid-infrared emission, provides an unbiased test of this association. We have carried out a deep intermediate-band imaging survey for Lya-emitting galaxies (LAEs) within a 30'x26' field of view around this Lya nebula. This is the first study of the environment of a Lya nebula found without a priori knowledge of its surroundings. We find that the nebula is located in an overdense region, at least 20x50 1/h_70 comoving Mpc in size, showing a factor of ~3 LAE number density enhancement relative to the edge of the field. We have studied the relationship between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density and gas surface density in the spiral galaxy M51a (NGC 5194), using multi-wavelength data obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). We introduce a new SFR index based on a linear combination of H-alpha emission-line and 24 micron continuum luminosities, that provides reliable extinction-corrected ionizing fluxes and SFR densities over a wide range of dust attenuations. The combination of these extinction-corrected SFR densities with aperture synthesis HI and CO maps has allowed us to probe the form of the spatially-resolved star formation law on scales of 0.5 to 2 kpc. We find that the resolved SFR vs gas surface density relation is well represented by a Schmidt power law, which is similar in form and dispersion to the disk-averaged Schmidt law. We observe a comparably strong correlation of the SFR surface density with the molecular gas surface density, but no significant correlation with the surface density of atomic gas. The best-fitting slope of the Schmidt law varies from N = 1.37 to 1.56, with zeropoint and slope that change systematically with the spatial sampling scale. We tentatively attribute these variations to the effects of areal sampling and averaging of a nonlinear intrinsic star formation law. We use spatially extended measurements of Ly$\alpha$ as well as less optically thick emission lines from an $\approx$80 kpc Ly$\alpha$ nebula at $z\approx1.67$ to assess the role of resonant scattering and to disentangle kinematic signatures from Ly$\alpha$ radiative transfer effects. We find that the Ly$\alpha$, CIV, HeII, and CIII] emission lines all tell a similar story in this system, and that the kinematics are broadly consistent with large-scale rotation. First, the observed surface brightness profiles are similar in extent in all four lines, strongly favoring a picture in which the Ly$\alpha$ photons are produced in situ instead of being resonantly scattered from a central source. Second, we see low kinematic offsets between Ly$\alpha$ and the less optically thick HeII line ($\sim$100-200 km s$^{-1}$), providing further support for the argument that the Ly$\alpha$ and other emission lines are all being produced within the spatially extended gas. Finally, the full velocity field of the system shows coherent velocity shear in all emission lines: $\approx$500 km s$^{-1}$ over the central $\approx$50 kpc of the nebula. The kinematic profiles are broadly consistent with large-scale rotation in a gas disk that is at least partially stable against collapse. These observations suggest that the Ly$\alpha$ nebula represents accreting material that is illuminated by an offset, hidden AGN or distributed star formation, and that is undergoing rotation in a clumpy and turbulent gas disk. The results of an H I 21 cm line survey of a sample of Magellanic spiral galaxies with apparent optical companions reveal that only four of 13 systems have confirmed H I–detected neighbors. The current interactions are affecting the morphology of the main galaxy in only two cases, NGC 3664 and NGC 3995. The presence of companions near NGC 2537 and UGC 5391 appears to have no effect on the morphology of those galaxies. Overall, there is little difference between the asymmetry of the H I profiles of those galaxies with and without companions, and on average, these Magellanic spirals have H I profiles that are no more asymmetric than a random sample of spirals in the field. We conclude that current interactions cannot be responsible for the lopsided morphology of most of the galaxies in this sample and that, whatever its original cause, lopsidedness must be a long-lived characteristic of these galaxies.

Using a spectral decomposition technique (Soto & Martin 2012, hereafter Paper I), we investigate the physical origin of the high-velocity emission line gas in a sample of 39 gas-rich, ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) mergers. Regions with shock-like excitation were identified in two kinematically distinct regimes, characterized by broad ($��>$ 150 \kms) and narrow linewidths. Here we investigate the physical origin of the high-velocity (broad) emission with shock-like line ratios. Considering the large amount of extinction in these galaxies, the blueshift of the broad emission suggests an origin on the near side of the galaxy and therefore an interpretation as a galactic outflow. The large spatial extent of the broad, shocked emission component is generally inconsistent with an origin in the narrow-line region of a AGN, so we conclude that energy and momentum supplied by the starburst drives these outflows. The new data are used to examine the fraction of the supernova energy radiated by shocks and the mass loss rate in the warm-ionized phase of the wind. We show that the shocks produced by galactic outflows can be recognized in moderately high-resolution, integrated spectra of these nearby, ultraluminous starbursts. Giant Lya nebulae (or Lya "blobs") are likely sites of ongoing massive galaxy formation, but the rarity of these powerful sources has made it difficult to form a coherent picture of their properties, ionization mechanisms, and space density. Systematic narrow-band Lya nebula surveys are ongoing, but the small redshift range covered and the observational expense limit the comoving volume that can be probed by even the largest of these surveys and pose a significant problem when searching for such rare sources. Detailed analysis of the substructure of Lya nebulae can put important constraints on the physical mechanisms at work and the properties of galaxies forming within them. Using high resolution HST imaging of a Lya nebula at z~2.656, we have taken a census of the compact galaxies in the vicinity, used optical/near-infrared colors to select system members, and put constraints on the morphology of the spatially-extended emission. The system is characterized by (a) a population of compact, low luminosity (~0.1 L*) sources --- 17 primarily young, small (Re~1-2 kpc), disky galaxies including an obscured AGN --- that are all substantially offset (>20 kpc) from the line-emitting nebula; (b) the lack of a central galaxy at or near the peak of the Lya emission; and (c) several nearly coincident, spatially extended emission components --- Lya, HeII, and UV continuum --- that are extremely smooth. These morphological findings are difficult to reconcile with theoretical models that invoke outflows, cold flows, or resonant scattering, suggesting that while all of these physical phenomena may be occurring, they are not sufficient to explain the powering and large extent of Lya nebulae. In addition, although the compact galaxies within the system are irrelevant as power sources, the region is significantly overdense relative to the field galaxy population (by at least a factor of 4). We have discovered a ~45 kpc Lya nebula (or Lya ``blob'') at z~1.67 which exhibits strong, spatially-extended HeII emission and very weak CIV and CIII] emission. This is the first spatially-extended Lya+HeII emitter observed and the lowest redshift Lya blob yet found. Strong Lya and HeII-1640 emission in the absence of metal lines has been proposed as a unique observational signature of primordial galaxy formation (e.g., from gravitational cooling radiation or Population III star formation), but no convincing examples of spatially-extended Lya+HeII emitters have surfaced either in Lya-emitting galaxy surveys at high redshifts (z > 4) or in studies of Lya nebulae at lower redshifts. From comparisons with photoionization models, we find that the observed line ratios in this nebula are consistent with low metallicity gas (Z < 10^-2 - 10^-3 Z_sun), but that this conclusion depends on the unknown ionization parameter of the system. The large HeII equivalent width (~37+/-10A) and the large HeII/Lya ratio (0.12+/-0.04) suggest that the cloud is being illuminated by a hard ionizing continuum, either an AGN or very low metallicity stars, or perhaps powered by gravitational cooling radiation. Thus far there is no obvious sign of a powerful AGN in or near the system, so in order to power the nebula while remaining hidden from view even in the mid-infrared, the AGN would need to be heavily obscured. Despite the strong Lya+HeII emission, it is not yet clear what is the dominant power source for this nebula. With the goal of investigating the degree to which the mid-infrared emission traces the star formation rate (SFR), we analyze Spitzer 8 um and 24 um data of star-forming regions in a sample of 33 nearby galaxies with available HST/NICMOS images in the Paschen-alpha (1.8756 um) emission line. The galaxies are drawn from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample, and cover a range of morphologies and a factor ~10 in oxygen abundance. Published data on local low-metallicity starburst galaxies and Luminous Infrared Galaxies are also included in the analysis. Both the stellar-continuum-subtracted 8 um emission and the 24 um emission correlate with the extinction-corrected Pa-alpha line emission, although neither relationship is linear. Simple models of stellar populations and dust extinction and emission are able to reproduce the observed non-linear trend of the 24 um emission versus number of ionizing photons, including the modest deficiency of 24 um emission in the low metallicity regions, which results from a combination of decreasing dust opacity and dust temperature at low luminosities. Conversely, the trend of the 8 um emission as a function of the number of ionizing photons is not well reproduced by the same models. The 8 um emission is contributed, in larger measure than the 24 um emission, by dust heated by non-ionizing stellar populations, in agreement with previous findings. Two SFR calibrations, one using the 24 um emission and the other using a combination of the 24 um and H-alpha luminosities (Kennicutt et al. 2007), are presented. No calibration is presented for the 8 um emission, because of its significant dependence on both metallicity and environment. Using the new capabilities of the Spitzer Space Telescope and extensive multiwavelength data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), it is now possible to study the infrared properties of star formation in nearby galaxies down to scales equivalent to large HII regions. We are therefore able to determine what fraction of large, infrared-selected star-forming regions in normal galaxies are highly obscured and address how much of the star formation we miss by relying solely on the optical portion of the spectrum. Employing a new empirical method for deriving attenuations of infrared-selected star-forming regions we investigate the statistics of obscured star formation on 500pc scales in a sample of 38 nearby galaxies. We find that the median attenuation is 1.4 magnitudes in H-alpha and that there is no evidence for a substantial sub-population of uniformly highly-obscured star-forming regions. The regions in the highly-obscured tail of the attenuation distribution (A_H-alpha > 3) make up only ~4% of the sample of nearly 1800 regions, though very embedded infrared sources on the much smaller scales and lower luminosities of compact and ultracompact HII regions are almost certainly present in greater numbers. The highly-obscured cases in our sample are generally the bright, central regions of galaxies with high overall attenuation but are not otherwise remarkable. We also find that a majority of the galaxies show decreasing radial trends in H-alpha attenuation. The small fraction of highly-obscured regions seen in this sample of normal, star-forming galaxies suggests that on 500pc scales the timescale for significant dispersal or break up of nearby, optically-thick dust clouds is short relative to the lifetime of a typical star-forming region., Accepted for publication in ApJ; emulateapj style, 30 pages, 18 figures (compressed versions), 3 tables

We explore the nature of variations in dust emission within an individual galaxy using 3.6 - 160 micron Spitzer Space Telescope observations and 450 and 850 micron James Clerk Maxwell Telescope observations of the edge-on Sd spiral galaxy NGC 4631 with the goals of understanding the relation between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and dust emission, studying the variations in the colors of the dust emission, and searching for possible excess submillimeter emission compared to what is anticipated based on dust models applied to the mid- and far-infrared data. PAH emission at 8 micron is found to correlate best with hot dust emission at 24 micron on kiloparsec scales, although the relation breaks down on scales equal to hundreds of parsecs, possibly because of differences in the mean free paths between the photons that excite the PAHs and heat the dust and possibly because the PAHs are destroyed by the hard radiation fields in the centers of some star formation regions. The ratio of 8 micron PAH emission to 160 micron cool dust emission appears to be a function of radius. The 70/160 and 160/450 micron flux density ratios are remarkably constant even though the surface brightness varies by a factor of 25 in each wave band, which suggests that the emission is from dust heated by a nearly-uniform radiation field. Globally, we find an excess of 850 micron emission relative to what would be predicted by dust models. The 850 micron excess is highest in regions with low 160 micron surface brightness, although the strength and statistical significance of this result depends on the model fit to the data. We rule out variable emissivity functions or ~4 K dust as the possible origins of this 850 micron emission, but we do discuss the other possible mechanisms that could produce the emission.

We obtained medium-resolution spectra of 336 quasar candidates in the COSMOS HST/Treasury field using the MMT 6.5-meter telescope and the Hectospec multi-object spectrograph. Candidates were drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR1 catalog using quasar flags set by the SDSS multi-color quasar target selection algorithm. In this paper we present our discovery spectra from 1.39 square degrees (69.5% of the COSMOS field) and a discussion of the selection method and yields. We confirmed 95 quasars, including at least 2 BALs; 80 of these are new quasars that do not appear in previous quasar confirmation follow-up studies. The candidates additionally included 184 compact emission-line galaxies, a third of which are likely Type 2 AGN, and 12 stars. The recent star formation (SF) in the early-type spiral galaxy M81 is characterized using imaging observations from the far-ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (IR). We compare these data with models of the stellar, gas, and dust emission for sub-galactic regions. Our results suggest the existence of a diffuse dust emission not directly linked to the recent SF. We find a radial decrease of the dust temperature and dust mass density, and in the attenuation of the stellar light. The IR emission in M81 can be modeled with three components: 1) cold dust with a temperature =18+-2 K, concentrated near the HII regions but also presenting a diffuse distribution; 2) warm dust with T_w=53+-7 K, directly linked with the HII regions; and 3) aromatic molecules, with diffuse morphology peaking around the HII regions. We derive several relationships to obtain total IR luminosities from IR monochromatic fluxes, and we compare five different star formation rate (SFR) estimators for HII regions in M81 and M51: the UV, Halpha, and three estimators based on Spitzer data. We find that the Halpha luminosity absorbed by dust correlates tightly with the 24 microns emission. The correlation with the total IR luminosity is not as good. Important variations from galaxy to galaxy are found when estimating the total SFR with the 24 microns or the total IR emission alone. The most reliable estimations of the total SFRs are obtained by combining the Halpha emission (or the UV) and an IR luminosity (especially the 24 microns emission), which probe the unobscured and obscured SF, respectively. For the entire M81 galaxy, about 50% of the total SF is obscured by dust. Using a systematic broad-band search technique, we have carried out a survey for large Lya nebulae (or Lya "blobs") at 2, Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 16 pages in emulateapj format; 8 figures, 3 tables

In order to constrain the bolometric luminosities, dust properties and molecular gas content of giant Lyman alpha nebulae, the so-called Lyman alpha blobs, we have carried out a study of dust continuum and CO line emission in two well-studied representatives of this population at z ~ 3: a Lya blob discovered by its strong Spitzer MIPS 24um detection (LABd05; Dey et al. 2005) and the Steidel blob 1 (SSA22-LAB01; Steidel et al. 2000). We find that the spectral energy distribution of LABd05 is well described by an AGN-starburst composite template with L(FIR) = (4.0 +/- 0.5) x 10^12 Lsun, comparable to high-z sub-millimeter galaxies and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. New APEX/LABOCA 870um measurements rule out the reported SCUBA detection of the SSA22-LAB01 (S[850um] = 16.8 mJy) at the > 4sigma level. Consistent with this, ultra-deep Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) observations with ~2arcsec spatial resolution also fail to detect any 1.2mm continuum source down to ~0.45mJy per beam (3sigma). Combined with the existing (sub)mm observations in the literature, we conclude that the FIR luminosity of SSA22-LAB01 remains uncertain. No CO line is detected in either case down to integrated flux limits of (Snu dV) < 0.25--1.0 Jy km/s, indicating a modest molecular gas reservoir, M(H_2) < 1--3 x 10^10 Msun. The non-detections exclude, with high significance (12 sigma), the previous tentative detection of a CO(4-3) line in the SSA22-LAB01. The increased sensitivity afforded by ALMA will be critical in studying molecular gas and dust in these interesting systems.

Recent theoretical work has suggested that Lyα nebulae could be substantially polarized in the Lyα emission line, depending on the geometry, kinematics, and powering mechanism at work. Polarization observations can therefore provide a useful constraint on the source of ionization in these systems. In this Letter, we present the first Lyα polarization measurements for a giant Lyα nebula at z≈ 2.656. We do not detect any significant linear polarization of the Lyα emission: P Lyα = 2.6% ± 2.8% (corrected for statistical bias) within a single large aperture. The current data also do not show evidence for the radial polarization gradient predicted by some theoretical models. These results rule out singly scattered Lyα (e.g., from the nearby active galactic nucleus, AGN) and may be inconsistent with some models of backscattering in a spherical outflow. However, the effects of seeing, diminished signal-to-noise ratio, and angle averaging within radial bins make it difficult to put strong constraints on the radial polarization profile. The current constraints may be consistent with higher density outflow models, spherically symmetric infall models, photoionization by star formation within the nebula or the nearby AGN, resonant scattering, or non-spherically symmetric cold accretion (i.e., along filaments). Higher signal-to-noise ratio data probing to higher spatial resolution will allow us to harness the full diagnostic power of polarization observations in distinguishing between theoretical models of giant Lyα nebulae.
