Abstract

Incommensurately modulated twin structure of nyerereite Na1.64K0.36Ca(CO3)2 has been first determined in the (3+1)D symmetry group Cmcm({\alpha}00)00s with modulation vector q = 0.383a*. Unit-cell values are a = 5.062(1), b = 8.790(1), c = 12.744(1) {\AA}. Three orthorhombic components are related by threefold rotation about [001]. Discontinuous crenel functions are used to describe occupation modulation of Ca and some CO3 groups. Strong displacive modulation of the oxygen atoms in vertexes of such CO3 groups is described using x-harmonics in crenel intervals. The Na, K atoms occupy mixed sites whose occupation modulation is described by two ways using either complementary harmonic functions or crenels. The nyerereite structure has been compared both with commensurately modulated structure of K-free Na2Ca(CO3)2 and with widely known incommensurately modulated structure of {\gamma}-Na2CO3., Comment: Article published in Acta Crystallographica Section B

Abstract

We present a summary of peridotite in the Subantarctic (46–60° S) surrounding the Antarctic Plate. Peridotite xenoliths occur on the Kerguelen Islands and Auckland Islands. The Kerguelen Islands are underlain by a plume, whereas the Auckland Islands are part of continental Zealandia, which is a Gondwana-rifted fragment. Small amounts of serpentinized peridotite has been dredged from fracture zones on the Southeast Indian Ridge, Southwest Indian Ridge and Pacific Antarctic Ridge, and represent upwelled asthenosphere accreted to form lith-osphere. Suprasubduction-zone peridotite was collected from two locations on the Sandwich Plate. Peridotites from most subantarctic occur-rences are moderately to highly depleted, and many show signs of subsequent metasomatic enrichment. Os isotopes indicate that subantarctic continental and oceanic lithospheric mantle contains ancient fragments that underwent depletion long before formation of the overlying crust.

20. Kyanite-bearing eclogite xenoliths from the Udachnaya kimberlite, Siberian craton, Russia

Abstract

Xenoliths brought up by kimberlite magmas are rare samples of otherwise inaccessible lithospheric mantle. Eclogite xenoliths are found in most cratons and commonly show a range of mineral and chemical compositions that can be used to better understand craton formation. This study focuses on five new kyanite-bearing eclogites from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe (367±5 Ma). They are fine-to coarse-grained and consist mainly of “cloudy” clinopyroxene (cpx) and garnet (grt). The clinopyroxene is Al,Na-rich omphacite while the garnet is Ca-rich, by contrast to typical bi-mineral (cpx+grt) eclogites that contain Fe- and Mg-rich garnets. The Udachnaya kyanite eclogites are similar in modal and major element composition to those from other cratons (Dharwar, Kaapvaal, Slave, West African). The kyanite eclogites have lower REE concentrations than bi-mineral eclogites and typically contain omphacites with positive Eu and Sr anomalies, i.e. a “ghost plagioclase signature”. Because such a signature can only be preserved in nonmetasomatised samples, we infer that they were present in the protoliths of the eclogites. It follows that subducted oceanic crust is present at the base of the Siberian craton. Similar compositions and textures are also seen in kyanite eclogites from other cratons, which we view as evidence for an Archean, subduction-like formation mechanism related to craton accretion. Thus, contrary to previous work that classifies all kyanite eclogites as type I (IK), metasomatized by carbonatite/kimberlitic fluids, we argue that some of them, both from this work and those from other cratons, belong to the non-metasomatized type II (IIB). The pristine type IIB is the nearest in composition to protoliths of mantle eclogites because it contains no metasomatic enrichments.

Abstract

International audience; This study is the first synthesis of chemical composition and stable isotopes values for the Kerguelen archipelago waters. The stable isotope values for rainfall and river waters in the Kerguelen archipelago allow a calculation of the Local Meteoric Water Line (δD rainfall = 8.43 x δ18O rainfall + 11) and a summer runoff line (δD river drainage = 7.45 x δ18O river drainage + 6). Surface waters with low- ion concentrations, chlorine facies and stable isotope values infiltrate through fractures and lava flows recharging deeper groundwaters. Thermal groundwater with low- (7 to 50 °C) and high- (50 to 100 °C) temperatures emerges in different localities in the volcanic archipelago. The low-temperature thermal waters might represent a mixture of high-temperature water with rainfall, thermal gradient changes or shallower infiltration compared to that for high-temperature thermal waters. The Rallier du Baty and Val Travers areas contain geothermal fluids with high-temperature springs, fumaroles and a large water flow. In the Rallier du Baty, the major ion chemistry and O, H, C and S stable isotope ratio of low (7 to 50 °C) temperature spring waters in Rallier du Baty area demonstrate a geothermal-system recharged by meteoric water (δD H2O liquid = 7.0 x δ18O H2O liquid + 0.5) rather than sea water. The chemical and isotopic compositions of elevated temperature spring waters (50 to 100 °C) have a long and complex history of meteoric water interacting with cooling magmas (δD H2O liquid = 1.78 x δ18O H2O liquid – 23). Surficial precipitation of aragonite, kaolinite, pyrite, native sulfur attest to a long livied geothermal system. A temperature of the geothermal reservoir has been estimated between 193 and 259 °C by cation geothermometry. The combination of minerals observed, major ion composition of water with thermodynamic modeling and stable isotope data suggest a geothermal system with a series of water/rock interactions from 50 to 250 °C. The conductive cooling of rising of H2O−CO2-rich fluids have produced a H2O−CO2 phase separation with the precipitation of secondary minerals.

Abstract

International audience; Oldhamite (CaS) is a key mineral in rare earth element (REE) budget of enstatite chondrite (EC). REE are important for tracing and dating cosmochemical processes, and a precise knowledge of their behavior in the EC formation conditions is essential.We present REEsulphide/silicatepartitioning values (D), obtained at 1300 and 1400°C from experiments performed in evacuated silica tubes for different oxygen fugacityconditions (from IW-6.9 to IW-4.1).Analyses were done on sulphidesand silicates byelectron microprobe for major elements and with Laser Ablation ICPMS for trace elements. ObtainedDvalues are between 0.5 and 5 for oldhamites and between 0.001 and 1 for FeS. These results are in agreement with literature data [1,2]but provide a more complete dataset. We note positive anomalies for Eu and Yb partition coefficientsin both sulphides. Here positive anomalies appear to be caused byEu and Ybreduction to Eu2+and Yb2+.This is confirmed byX-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) analysison Yb. Abstract

The Earth, which is characterized by an active mantle convection coupled to plate tectonics, is unique in the Solar System. Such mecanisms obscure our understanding of the Earth’s early history 4.5 Ga ago. The evolution of our planet depends on the nature of the parent bodies that have accreted to form the Earth. Then the Earth has differentiated to form the crust, mantle and the core, as well as its outer envelopes (hydrosphere and atmosphere). It is the interactions between these different envelopes that have led and controlled the emergence of life, but also its evolution to the present day. In this contribution we will retrace the history of the Earth from its formation to the development of the first environments favorable to life. This story is told through research conducted at the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans of the “Université Blaise Pascal” and the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique)., La Terre se distingue des autres corps planétaires par une dynamique mantellique active couplée à une tectonique des plaques. Ces processus rendent particulièrement difficile l’étude des premiers stades d’évolution de notre planète formée il y a plus de 4,5 milliards d’années. L’évolution de notre planète dépend de la nature des corps qui se sont accrétés pour la former puis des processus qui ont permis sa structuration chimique. La Terre s’est rapidement différenciée pour former la croûte en surface, le manteau et le noyau au centre, ainsi que ses enveloppes externes (hydrosphère et atmosphère). Ce sont les interactions entre ces différentes enveloppes qui ont conduit et contrôlé l’émergence de la vie, mais aussi son maintien et son évolution jusqu’à nos jours. Dans cette contribution nous allons retracer l’histoire de la Terre depuis sa formation jusqu’au développement des premiers environnements favorables à la vie. Cette histoire est racontée via les recherches menées au Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans de l’université Clermont Auvergne et du CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique).

Abstract

The awareness of the significance of the Southern Ocean in the Earth's climate system has become increasingly obvious. The deglacial atmospheric CO2 rise during warming periods in Antarctica has been attributed to CO2 ventilation from the deep ocean caused by enhanced upwelling around the Antarctic Divergence. It has been hypothesized that, more intense Southern Hemisphere westerly winds aligned with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current due to a southward shift of the wind belt from its Last Glacial Maximum equator-ward position, are the main drivers. Reconstructions of past changes in atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere are still scarce and the overall picture is patchy with sometimes contradictory results. For obvious reasons, most terrestrial records originate from southern South America and New Zealand. Here we present a terrestrial record from the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, from Kerguelen Islands located at 49 degrees S. A peat record is investigated using a multi-proxy approach (pollen and plant macrofossils, magnetic susceptibility, XRF analyses, biogenic silica content, Rock-Eval6 analysis and humification degree). Peat accumulation starts at about 16,000 cal yr BP with relatively warm and dry conditions. The most prominent change in our proxy data occurs at 13,600 cal yr BP, when peat ponds were established on the peat surface, resulting in lacustrine-type deposits, as a result of very high humidity, and with proxies implying very windy conditions. Within chronological uncertainties, this onset coincides with the onset of the so-called Oceanic Cold Reversal, based on the deuterium excess data in the EPICA Dome C ice core record. Kerguelen Islands are located in the moisture source area of Dome C and a change in atmospheric circulation at that time could explain both records. Abstract

Although iron isotopes are increasingly used for meteorites studies, no attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of terrestrial weathering on this isotopic tracer. We have thus conducted a petrographic, chemical, and iron isotopic study of equilibrated ordinary chondrites (OC) recovered from hot Moroccan and Algerian Saharan deserts environment. As previously noticed, we observe that terrestrial desertic weathering is characterized by the oxidation of Fe-Ni metal (Fe0), sulfide and Fe2+ occurring in olivine and pyroxene. It produces Fe-oxides and oxyhydroxides that partially replace metal, sulfide grains and also fill fractures. The bulk chemical compositions of the ordinary chondrites studied show a strong Sr and Ba enrichment and a S depletion during weathering. Bulk meteoritic iron isotope compositions are well correlated with the degree of weathering and S, Sr, and Ba contents. Most weathered chondrites display the heaviest isotopic composition, by up to 0.1 parts per thousand, which is of similar magnitude to the isotopic variations resulting from meteorite parent bodies' formation and evolution. This is probably due to the release of isotopically light Fe2+ to waters on the Earth's surface. Hence, when subtle Fe isotopic effects have to be studied in chondrites, meteorites with weathering grade above W2 should be avoided.

Abstract

International audience; Peridotite xenoliths brought up to the surface by the volcanism of the Kerguelen Islands represent a mantle that has been affected by a high degree of partial melting followed by intense melt percolation above the Kerguelen plume. These xenoliths are therefore particularly suitable to investigate effects of melt-rock interaction on crystallographic fabrics (lattice-preferred orientation (LPO)) of peridotite minerals and on the LPO-induced seismic properties of peridotites above a mantle plume. We have studied a suite of 16 ultramafic samples representative of different degrees of partial melting and magma-rock interaction among which the protogranular harzburgites are the least metasomatised xenoliths and dunites are the ultimate stage of metasomatism. Olivine LPO is characterized by high concentration of [010] axes perpendicular to the foliation and [100] axes close to the lineation or distributed in the foliation plane in harzburgites, whereas the high concentration of [100] axes is parallel to the lineation and [010] axes is perpendicular to the assumed foliation in dunites. Olivine LPO in harzburgites is interpreted as being due to a deformation regime in axial compression or transpression. The fabric strength of olivine decreases progressively from protogranular to poikilitic harzburgites and finally to dunites, for which it remains nevertheless significant (J index 3.8). Seismic properties calculated from LPO of minerals indicate that metasomatism at higher melt/rock ratio lowers the P wave velocities. The most significant difference between harzburgites and dunites corresponds to the distribution of S wave anisotropy. Harzburgites display the maximum of anisotropy within the foliation plane and the minimum of anisotropy perpendicular to the foliation plane, whereas the lowest anisotropy is parallel to the lineation for dunites. These modifications of seismic properties as a result of metasomatic processes may induce seismic heterogeneities in the mantle above the Kerguelen plume. In addition, assuming a lithospheric mantle primarily harzburgitic and structured with a horizontal foliation, the seismic properties calculated for the Kerguelen xenoliths reconcile the rather high anisotropy evidenced by the horizontally propagating surface waves with the apparent isotropy revealed by the absence of splitting of vertically propagating teleseismic SKS waves recorded by the GEOSCOPE Kerguelen station.
