Abstract

Every year, the global production of plastic waste reaches a staggering 400 million metric tons (Mt), precipitating adverse consequences for the environment, food safety, and biodiversity as it degrades into microplastics (MPs). The multifaceted nature of MP pollution, coupled with its intricate physiological impacts, underscores the pressing need for comprehensive policies and legislative frameworks. Such measures, alongside advancements in technology, hold promise in averting ecological catastrophe in the oceans. Mandated legislation represents a pivotal step towards restoring oceanic health and securing the well‐being of the planet. This work offers an overview of the policy hurdles, legislative initiatives, and prospective strategies for addressing global pollution due to MP. Additionally, this work explores innovative approaches that yield fresh insights into combating plastic pollution across various sectors. Emphasizing the importance of a global plastics treaty, the article underscores its potential to galvanize collaborative efforts in mitigating MP pollution's deleterious effects on marine ecosystems. Successful implementation of such a treaty could revolutionize the plastics economy, steering it towards a circular, less polluting model operating within planetary boundaries. Failure to act decisively risks exacerbating the scourge of MP pollution and its attendant repercussions on both humanity and the environment. Central to this endeavor are the formulation, content, and execution of the treaty itself, which demand careful consideration. While recognizing that a global plastics treaty is not a panacea, it serves as a mechanism for enhancing plastics governance and elevating global ambitions towards achieving zero plastic pollution by 2040. Adopting a life cycle approach to plastic management allows for a nuanced understanding of possible trade‐offs between environmental impact and economic growth, guiding the selection of optimal solutions with socio‐economic implications in mind. By embracing a comprehensive strategy that integrates legislative measures and technological innovations, we can substantially reduce the influx of marine plastic litter at its sources, safeguarding the oceans for future generations. 39. Applicability of edible Candelilla wax composite blended with Bryophyllumpinnatumextract to prolong shelf life of fruits/vegetables

Abstract

Candelilla wax (CW) is a natural lipid source that can be used to make biodegradable and edible coatings and films for fruits. However, CW alone does not provide sufficient antimicrobial and antioxidant properties to prevent microbial spoilage and oxidative deterioration of fresh products. This study aims at evaluating the applicability of CW blended with Bryophyllum pinnatum extract(BPE), a plant with medicinal and phytochemical properties, to enhance the shelf life of fruits. CW and BPE were mixed at different ratios and applied as coatings on banana, cucumber, lemon, and apple. The coated fruits were stored at room temperature for several days and evaluated for weight loss (WL), pH, and physical appearance. The results showed that the edible CW coating mixed with B. pinnatumextract could extend the shelf-life of selected fruits by lowering their weight loss (WL), as compared to those without coating (p≤ 0.05; paired t-test). It was observed that % WL of banana was significantly higher in the control group than in the coated banana (p≤ 0.05; paired t-test) and that the highest WL (4.5%) was reached on the 4thday. The lowest WL (2.7%) was observed in the banana with edible coating with methanolic extract (ECME) formulation. The coating formed a complex layer that blocked the movement of H2O molecules through the selected fruits, preventing water loss. The smallest pH change was observed in the banana coated with the extract, indicating that the coating was suitable for extending the shell life of banana. Overall, CW enriched with BPE maintained the quality of their products for marketability.

Abstract

Graphene oxide/polyimide nanocomposites, expect that these properties increase. That's why by the incorporation of modified graphene oxide into polyimides, graphene oxide polyimide nanocomposite can be achieved with excellent properties as compared to the parent material and may perform better than polyimide in different applications like in batteries and nano-platelet fillers etc. The aim of this research project is to enhance the thermal conductivity of graphene oxide (GO)/PI nanocomposite films. These polyimide nanocomposite films will be analyzed and characterized using X-rays diffractions (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). 42. Exploring the Optical and Photovoltaic Changeover for Carbazole-Bridge Push-Pull Switches Against Their Local Excitations and Charge Transfers.

Abstract

This research investigates characterization of low lying excitations of newly designed organic dyes for their local excited and charge transfer-related molecular switching attributes such as donor-acceptor relations against the carbazole bridge. The eight new dyes, having 4 symmetrical (Syn-A-D) and 4 antisymmetric (Anti-A-D) arrangements showed how the push-pull effect can operate to create the charge transfer phenomenon. Their absorption energies (E) for Syn dyes ranged from 2.98 eV to 4.07 eV, with corresponding wavelengths (λmax) ranging from 304 nm to 415 nm. While for their Anti arrangements, it ranged from 1.62 eV to 3.99 eV, with corresponding λmax values as 310-617 nm. Syn-C1 with an ionization potential (IP) of 6.59 eV and an electron affinity (EA) of 2.04 eV can be predicted to be more chemically stable compared to Anti-C2 with an IP of 5.16 eV and an EA of 3.86 eV. Syn-C also has the highest Voc (3.24 eV) and Pmax (22.35 W), indicating that it has the potential to be more chemically stable as compared to the other dyes. The findings of this research contributed to a better understanding of the molecular switching attributes of carbazole-based organic dyes, which could have implications for various applications, including optoelectronics and energy conversion devices.
