We numerically study the acoustic parametric amplification of spin waves using surface acoustic waves (SAW) in a magnetic thin film. First, we illustrate how the process of parametric spin-wave generation using short-waved SAWs with a fixed frequency allows to tune frequencies of the generated spin waves by the applied magnetic field. We further present the amplification of microwave driven spin waves using this method. The decay length and the amplitude of the driven spin waves can be amplified up to approximately 2.5 and 10 times compared to the reference signal, respectively. More importantly, the proposed design can be used as a frequency converter, in which a low (high) frequency spin-wave mode stimulates the excitation of a high (low) frequency mode. Our results pave the way in designing highly flexible and efficient hybrid magnonic device architectures for microwave data transport and processing.

We propose a hybrid magnonic-oscillator system based on the combination of a spin transfer auto-oscillator and a magnonic waveguide to open new perspectives for spin-wave based circuits. The system is composed of a spin transfer oscillator based on a vortex state which is dipolarly coupled to a nanoscale spin-wave waveguide with longitudinal magnetization. In its auto-oscillating regime, the oscillator emits coherent spin waves with tunable and controllable frequencies, directions and amplitudes into the waveguide. We demonstrate the principle of this method using micromagnetic simulations and show that reconfiguration of the system is possible by changing the chirality and polarity of the magnetic vortex. Spin waves are emitted into the waveguide with high non-reciprocity and the preferred direction depends on the core polarity of the vortex. In contrast, different vortex chiralities lead to different amplitudes of the emitted waves. Our findings open up a novel way to design an agile spintronic device for the coherent and tunable generation of propagating spin waves.

An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Prior to fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error mitigation strategies are necessary to continue this growth. Here, we study physical simulation within the seniority-zero electron pairing subspace, which affords both a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model, and an opportunity to validate recently introduced ``purification-based'' error-mitigation strategies. We compare the performance of error mitigation based on doubling quantum resources in time (echo verification) or in space (virtual distillation), on up to $20$ qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques (e.g. post-selection); the gain from error mitigation is seen to increase with the system size. Employing these error mitigation strategies enables the implementation of the largest variational algorithm for a correlated chemistry system to-date. Extrapolating performance from these results allows us to estimate minimum requirements for a beyond-classical simulation of electronic structure. Current-induced self-sustained magnetization oscillations in spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) are promising candidates for ultra-agile microwave sources or detectors. While usually STNOs behave as a monochrome source, we report here clear bimodal simultaneous emission of incommensurate microwave oscillations, where the two tones correspond to two parametrically coupled eigenmodes with tunable splitting. The emission range is crucially sensitive to the change in hybridization of the eigenmodes of free and fixed layers, for instance, through a slight tilt of the applied magnetic field from the normal of the nano-pillar. Our experimental findings are supported both analytically and by micromagnetic simulations, which ascribe the process to four-magnon scattering between a pair of radially symmetric magnon modes and a pair of magnon modes with opposite azimuthal index. Our findings open up new possibilities for cognitive telecommunications and neuromorphic systems that use frequency multiplexing to improve communication performance.

Basic vacancy defects in twodimensional silicon carbide (2D-SiC) are examined by means of density functional theory calculations to explore their magneto-optical properties as well as their potential in quantum technologies. In particular, the characteristic hyperfine tensors and optical excited states of carbon-vacancy, silicon-vacancy, and carbon antisite-vacancy pair defects in 2D-SiC are determined that are the key fingerprints of these defects that may be observed in electron paramagnetic resonance and photoluminescence experiments, respectively. Besides the fundamental characterization of the most basic native defects, we show that the negatively charged carbon antisite-vacancy defect is a promising candidate for realizing a near-infrared single-photon quantum emitter with spin doublet ground state, where the negative charge state may be provided by nitrogen doping of 2D-SiC. The discovery of topological order has revolutionized the understanding of quantum matter in modern physics and provided the theoretical foundation for many quantum error correcting codes. Realizing topologically ordered states has proven to be extremely challenging in both condensed matter and synthetic quantum systems. Here, we prepare the ground state of the toric code Hamiltonian using an efficient quantum circuit on a superconducting quantum processor. We measure a topological entanglement entropy near the expected value of $\ln2$, and simulate anyon interferometry to extract the braiding statistics of the emergent excitations. Furthermore, we investigate key aspects of the surface code, including logical state injection and the decay of the non-local order parameter. A promising approach to study condensed-matter systems is to simulate them on an engineered quantum platform. However, achieving the accuracy needed to outperform classical methods has been an outstanding challenge. Here, using eighteen superconducting qubits, we provide an experimental blueprint for an accurate condensed-matter simulator and demonstrate how to probe fundamental electronic properties. We benchmark the underlying method by reconstructing the single-particle band-structure of a one-dimensional wire. We demonstrate nearly complete mitigation of decoherence and readout errors and arrive at an accuracy in measuring energy eigenvalues of this wire with an error of ~0.01 rad, whereas typical energy scales are of order 1 rad. Insight into this unprecedented algorithm fidelity is gained by highlighting robust properties of a Fourier transform, including the ability to resolve eigenenergies with a statistical uncertainty of 1e-4 rad. Furthermore, we synthesize magnetic flux and disordered local potentials, two key tenets of a condensed-matter system. When sweeping the magnetic flux, we observe avoided level crossings in the spectrum, a detailed fingerprint of the spatial distribution of local disorder. Combining these methods, we reconstruct electronic properties of the eigenstates where we observe persistent currents and a strong suppression of conductance with added disorder. Our work describes an accurate method for quantum simulation and paves the way to study novel quantum materials with superconducting qubits.

Relaxation of linear magnetization dynamics is well described by the viscous Gilbert damping processes. However, for strong excitations, nonlinear damping processes such as the decay via magnon-magnon interactions emerge and trigger additional relaxation channels. Here, we use space- and time-resolved microfocused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and micromagnetic simulations to investigate the nonlinear relaxation of strongly driven propagating spin waves in yttrium iron garnet nanoconduits. We show that the nonlinear magnon relaxation in this highly quantized system possesses intermodal features, i.e., magnons scatter to higher-order quantized modes through a cascade of scattering events. We further show how to control such intermodal dissipation processes by quantization of the magnon band in single-mode devices, where this phenomenon approaches its fundamental limit. Quantum algorithms offer a dramatic speedup for computational problems in machine learning, material science, and chemistry. However, any near-term realizations of these algorithms will need to be heavily optimized to fit within the finite resources offered by existing noisy quantum hardware. Here, taking advantage of the strong adjustable coupling of gmon qubits, we demonstrate a continuous two-qubit gate set that can provide a 3x reduction in circuit depth as compared to a standard decomposition. We implement two gate families: an iSWAP-like gate to attain an arbitrary swap angle, $\theta$, and a CPHASE gate that generates an arbitrary conditional phase, $\phi$. Using one of each of these gates, we can perform an arbitrary two-qubit gate within the excitation-preserving subspace allowing for a complete implementation of the so-called Fermionic Simulation, or fSim, gate set. We benchmark the fidelity of the iSWAP-like and CPHASE gate families as well as 525 other fSim gates spread evenly across the entire fSim($\theta$, $\phi$) parameter space achieving purity-limited average two-qubit Pauli error of $3.8 \times 10^{-3}$ per fSim gate., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

We present the experimental demonstration of the parallel parametric generation of spin-waves in a microscaled yttrium iron garnet waveguide with nanoscale thickness. Using Brillouin light scattering microscopy, we observe the excitation of the first and second waveguide modes generated by a stripline microwave pumping source. Micromagnetic simulations reveal the wave vector of the parametrically generated spin-waves. Based on analytical calculations, which are in excellent agreement with our experiments and simulations, we prove that the spin-wave radiation losses are the determinative term of the parametric instability threshold in this miniaturized system. The used method enables the direct excitation and amplification of nanometer spin-waves dominated by exchange interactions. The interplay of interactions and strong disorder can lead to an exotic quantum many-body localized (MBL) phase. Beyond the absence of transport, the MBL phase has distinctive signatures, such as slow dephasing and logarithmic entanglement growth; they commonly result in slow and subtle modification of the dynamics, making their measurement challenging. Here, we experimentally characterize these properties of the MBL phase in a system of coupled superconducting qubits. By implementing phase sensitive techniques, we map out the structure of local integrals of motion in the MBL phase. Tomographic reconstruction of single and two qubit density matrices allowed us to determine the spatial and temporal entanglement growth between the localized sites. In addition, we study the preservation of entanglement in the MBL phase. The interferometric protocols implemented here measure affirmative correlations and allow us to exclude artifacts due to the imperfect isolation of the system. Magnons, the quanta of spin waves, could be used to encode information in beyond-Moore computing applications, and magnonic device components, including logic gates, transistors, and units for non-Boolean computing, have already been developed. Magnonic directional couplers, which can function as circuit building blocks, have also been explored, but have been impractical because of their millimetre dimensions and multi-mode spectra. Here, we report a magnonic directional coupler based on yttrium iron garnet single-mode waveguides of 350 nm width. We use the amplitude of a spin-wave to encode information and to guide it to one of the two outputs of the coupler depending on the signal magnitude, frequency, and the applied magnetic field. The inertial effects of magnetic solitons play a crucial role in their dynamics and stability. Yet governing their inertial effects is a challenge for their use in real devices. Here, we show how to control the inertial effects of magnetic droplet solitons. Magnetic droplets are strongly nonlinear and localized autosolitons than can form in current-driven nanocontacts. Droplets can be considered as dynamical particles with an effective mass. We show that the dynamical droplet bears a second excitation under its own inertia. These excitations comprise a chiral profile, and appear when the droplet resists the force induced by the Oersted field of the current injected into the nanocontact. We reveal the role of the spin torque on the excitation of these chiral modes and we show how to control these modes using the current and the field., Comment: 10 pages

We report on transport properties of the controllable large area MoSO/Reduced graphene oxide(RGO) heterostructures electrodeposited on FTO substrates and its comparision with theoretical calculations on MoSo/Gr. I-V characteristics of the heterostructure made by P or n-type MoSO, exhibit Schottkey behavior in the interface similar to the MoS$_{2}$/Gr ones. Theoretical calculations show significant effects of lateral layer size as well as layer number in the electronic properties. In monolayer MoS$_{2}$/Gr by increasing the lateral size the energy gap disappears and the Fermi level shifts towards valence band. In the case of bilayer MoS$_{2}$ on bilayer Gr structure, the Fermi level shift is again towards valence band but, the gap is slightly higher than the monolayer structure. We found that the experimentally obtained results for n-type MoSO/RGO results are qualitatively in agreement with theoretical calculations of the MoS$_{2}$/Gr heterostructure. These results are beneficial to understand and design the high quality and low cost MoSO/RGO based electronic, optoelectronic and energy storage devices or cocatalysts.

The existence of backscattering-immune spin-wave modes is demonstrated in magnetic thin films of nano-scale thickness. Our results reveal that chiral Magneto Static Surface Waves (cMSSWs), which propagate perpendicular to the magnetization direction in an in-plane magnetized thin film, are robust against backscattering from surface defects. cMSSWs are protected against various types of surface inhomogeneities and defects as long as their frequency lies inside the gap of the volume modes. Our explanation is independent of the topology of the modes and predicts that this robustness is a consequence of symmetry breaking of the dynamic magnetic fields of cMSSWs due to the off-diagonal part of the dipolar interaction tensor, which is present both for long- (dipole dominated) and short-wavelength (exchange dominated) spin waves. Recent theoretical studies show that decoherence process can enhance transport efficiency in quantum systems. This effect is known as environment-assisted quantum transport (ENAQT). The role of ENAQT in optimal quantum transport is well investigated, however, it is less known how robust ENAQT is with respect to variations in the system or its environment characteristic. Toward answering this question, we simulated excitonic energy transfer in Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) photosynthetic complex. We found that ENAQT is robust with respect to many relevant parameters of environmental interactions and Frenkel-exciton Hamiltonian including reorganization energy, bath frequency cutoff, temperature, and initial excitations, dissipation rate, trapping rate, disorders, and dipole moments orientations. We explore various design principles for efficient excitation energy transport in complex quantum systems. We investigate energy transfer efficiency in randomly disordered geometries consisting of up to 20 chromophores to explore spatial and spectral properties of small natural/artificial Light-Harvesting Complexes (LHC). We find significant statistical correlations among highly efficient random structures with respect to ground state properties, excitonic energy gaps, multichromophoric spatial connectivity, and path strengths. These correlations can even exist beyond the optimal regime of environment-assisted quantum transport. For random configurations embedded in spatial dimensions of 30 A and 50 A, we observe that the transport efficiency saturates to its maximum value if the systems contain 7 and 14 chromophores respectively. Remarkably, these optimum values coincide with the number of chlorophylls in (Fenna-Matthews-Olson) FMO protein complex and LHC II monomers, respectively, suggesting a potential natural optimization with respect to chromophoric density., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. We develop an efficient and robust approach to Hamiltonian identification for multipartite quantum systems based on the method of compressed sensing. This work demonstrates that with only O(s log(d)) experimental configurations, consisting of random local preparations and measurements, one can estimate the Hamiltonian of a d-dimensional system, provided that the Hamiltonian is nearly s-sparse in a known basis. We numerically simulate the performance of this algorithm for three- and four-body interactions in spin-coupled quantum dots and atoms in optical lattices. The resources required to characterise the dynamics of engineered quantum systems-such as quantum computers and quantum sensors-grow exponentially with system size. Here we adapt techniques from compressive sensing to exponentially reduce the experimental configurations required for quantum process tomography. Our method is applicable to dynamical processes that are known to be nearly-sparse in a certain basis and it can be implemented using only single-body preparations and measurements. We perform efficient, high-fidelity estimation of process matrices on an experiment attempting to implement a photonic two-qubit logic-gate. The data base is obtained under various decoherence strengths. Performance of quantum process estimation is naturally limited to fundamental, random, and systematic imperfections in preparations and measurements. These imperfections may lead to considerable errors in the process reconstruction due to the fact that standard data analysis techniques presume ideal devices. Here, by utilizing generic auxiliary quantum or classical correlations, we provide a framework for estimation of quantum dynamics via a single measurement apparatus. By construction, this approach can be applied to quantum tomography schemes with calibrated faulty state generators and analyzers. Specifically, we present a generalization of "Direct Characterization of Quantum Dynamics" [M. Mohseni and D. A. Lidar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 170501 (2006)] with an imperfect Bell-state analyzer. We demonstrate that, for several physically relevant noisy preparations and measurements, only classical correlations and small data processing overhead are sufficient to accomplish the full system identification. We develop a general approach for monitoring and controlling evolution of open quantum systems. In contrast to the master equations describing time evolution of density operators, here, we formulate a dynamical equation for the evolution of the process matrix acting on a system. This equation is applicable to non-Markovian and/or strong coupling regimes. We propose two distinct applications for this dynamical equation. We first demonstrate identification of quantum Hamiltonians generating dynamics of closed or open systems via performing process tomography. In particular, we argue how one can efficiently estimate certain classes of sparse Hamiltonians by performing partial tomography schemes. In addition, we introduce a novel optimal control theoretic setting for manipulating quantum dynamics of Hamiltonian systems, specifically for the task of decoherence suppression.

We provide a novel approach for characterization of quantum Hamiltonian systems via utilizing a single measurement device. Specifically, we demonstrate how external quantum correlations can be used for Hamiltonian identification tasks. We explicitly introduce experimental procedures for direct estimation of single- and two-qubit Hamiltonian parameters, and also for simultaneous estimation of transverse and longitudinal relaxation rates, using a single Bell-state analyzer. Characterization of quantum dynamics is a fundamental problem in quantum physics and quantum information science. Several methods are known which achieve this goal, namely Standard Quantum Process Tomography (SQPT), Ancilla-Assisted Process Tomography (AAPT), and the recently proposed scheme of Direct Characterization of Quantum Dynamics (DCQD). Here, we review these schemes and analyze them with respect to some of the physical resources they require. Although a reliable figure-of-merit for process characterization is not yet available, our analysis can provide a benchmark which is necessary for choosing the scheme that is the most appropriate in a given situation, with given resources. As a result, we conclude that for quantum systems where two-body interactions are not naturally available, SQPT is the most efficient scheme. Recently M. Ziman [quant-ph/0603151] criticized our approach for quantifying the required physical resources in the theory of Direct Characterization of Quantum Dynamics (DCQD) [quant-ph/0601033, quant-ph/0601034] in comparison to other quantum process tomography (QPT) schemes. Here we argue that Ziman's comments regarding optimality, quantumness, and the novelty of DCQD are inaccurate. Specifically, we demonstrate that DCQD is optimal with respect to both the required number of experimental configurations and the number of possible outcomes over all known QPT schemes in the 2^{2n} dimensional Hilbert space of n system and n ancilla qubits. Moreover, we show DCQD is more efficient than all known QPT schemes in the sense of overall required number of quantum operations. Furthermore, we argue that DCQD is a new method for characterizing quantum dynamics and cannot be considered merely as a subclass of previously known QPT schemes.
