Background: Optimal vitamin D levels for an effective role in immune function and rickets prevention are thought to vary, but have not yet been definitively determined. Reports on reference values of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in cats are limited. Aims: The study provides information about serum 25(OH)D values in cats with different age, gender, breed, diet type, reproductive status, housing condition, and also the relationship between these levels and various hematological and biochemical parameters. Methods: Clinically healthy cats (88) were included in the study. Physical examination and assessment of hematological and biochemical parameters were performed on cats in order to confirm their health status. Reference value of serum 25(OH)D was assayed by ELISA method and the effects of age (under six months and above six months), gender, breed, diet (only commercial diet, only homemade food, mixture of commercial and homemade food), reproduction status, and housing conditions on serum 25(OH)D was determined. Results: The median, 2.5% and 97.5% of 25(OH)D in sampled cats were 19.74 ng/ml, 3.12 ng/ml, and 92.1 ng/ml, respectively. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was lower when homemade diet was used compared to commercial and mixed diets as well as in cats under six months of age compared to older cats. Conclusion: Diet type and age can affect serum 25(OH)D levels in healthy cats while other parameters had no significant effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid degradation of barley grain (BG, Hordeum vulgare) starch in the rumen can seriously impair rumen fermentation efficiency. Some strategies to curb the negative effects of grain feeding and hamper dysfermentation rely on the usage of phytogenic substances or organic acids. In order to process BGs, they were steeped in 5% lactic acid (BGLA), oregano (BGORE) or thyme (BGTHY) extracts for 48 h. Therefore, an in situ study was conducted to assess the effect of either processed BG or unprocessed BG (control; BGCTRL) on ruminal degradation kinetics (a; soluble fraction, b; potential degradable fraction, c; fractional degradation rate) and effective rumen degradability (ERD) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and starch. In vitro trials with a 2 × 2 × 4 factorial design were also used to assess the effect of diets which contained intact or processed BGs with different CP [160 (P16) vs. 170 (P17)] g/kg DM,) and ruminal protein degradability percentages [90 (low degradability; LD) vs. 115 (high degradability; HD) g/kg DM] on rumen gas production characteristics (b; asymptotic gas volume, c; the constant rate of gas production), yield of microbial crude protein (MCP) and effective utilizable crude protein in the duodenum (EuCP). In situ data demonstrated that BGLA compared with BGCTRL had significantly lower fractions of “a” (0.22 vs. 0.26, P=0.03) and “c” (0.10 vs. 0.17, P<0.01) and ERD of starch (0.53 vs. 0.64, P=0.01). The treatment of BGs with the plant extracts, however, was not able to change the in situ parameters relatively to BGCTRL. Results of the in vitro trials indicated that diets containing processed BG had higher MCP when compared with BGCTRL (19.74 vs. 15.85 mg/250 mg DM, P<0.01). Lactic acid and ORE-treated barley decreased the gas production constant rate (c; mL/h) and gas volume after 2 h compared with BGCTRL (P≤0.05). Our study revealed that processed BG can alter the rumen starch degradation pattern, and rumen gas production parameters and increase MCP and EuCP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Lipid mobilization increases significantly in cows around the time of calving; a correlation between excessive blood NEFA concentrations, oxidative stress, and impaired health status in transition dairy cattle was observed. Aims: The relationship between serum thyroxin (T4) values and energy indices and lipid profile in all cows, non-fat cows (NFCs), fat cows (FCs), healthy, and diseased animals were estimated in the present study. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from fifty multiparous cows on -14, +10, +20, and +30 days relative to parturition. They had similar diets and were kept under the same management conditions. Results: NEFA and BHBA values increased significantly on the 10th day of calving. Inversely, glucose, T4, triglyceride, LDL-C, and VLDLC decreased significantly ten days after calving. There was a significant negative correlation between serum T4 and NEFA for all cows and FCs. Serum T4 and BHBA values had a significant negative correlation in NFCs, FCs, healthy, and diseased cows. In addition, serum T4 and fructosamine had a significant negative relationship in FCs and a significant positive correlation in diseased cows. Serum T4 values had a significant negative correlation with cholesterol, HDL-C, and a positive correlation with triglyceride and VLDL-C for all cows, NFCs, FCs, and healthy cows. Conclusion: The data emphasized the effects of negative energy balance during the transition period on serum lipids profile and thyroid function. In addition, the correlation between T4 and energy and lipids indices may indicate a possible effect of health and body condition status on thyroid responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
