1. Bulk-like Mott-Transition in ultrathin Cr-doped V2O3 films and the influence of its variability on scaled devices

Abstract

The pressure driven Mott-transition in Chromium doped V2O3 films is investigated by direct electrical measurements on polycrystalline films with thicknesses down to 10 nm, and doping concentrations of 2%, 5% and 15%. A change in resistivity of nearly two orders of magnitude is found for 2% doping. A simulation model based on a scaling law description of the phase transition and percolative behavior in a resistor lattice is developed. This is used to show that despite significant deviations in the film structure from single crystals, the transition behavior is very similar. Finally, the influence of the variability between grains on the characteristics of scaled devices is investigated and found to allow for scaling down to at least 50 nm device width.

Abstract

Thin films of the prototypical charge transfer insulator NiO appear to be a promising material for novel nanoelectronic devices. The fabrication of the material is challenging however, and mostly a p-type semiconducting phase is reported. Here, the results of a factorial experiment are presented that allow optimization of the film properties of thin films deposited using sputtering. A cluster analysis is performed, and four main types of films are found. Among them, the desired insulating phase is identified. From this material, nanoscale devices are fabricated, which demonstrate that the results carry over to relevant length scales. Initial switching results are reported.

6. Design of materials properties and device performance in memristive systems

Abstract

Future development of the modern nanoelectronics and its flagships internet of things and artificial intelligence as well as many related applications is largely associated with memristive elements. This technology offers a broad spectrum of functionalities, however, it follows predominantly a phenomenological approach and crucial challenge/limit for further development remains variability and lack of fundamental materials' design strategy. Here we demonstrate the vital importance of materials' purity for determining memristors' functionalities, showing that part per million foreign elements significantly change the performance. By appropriate choice of chemistry and amount of doping material we can selectively enhance desired operation mode. We highlight how dopant dependent structure and charge/potential distribution in the space charge layers and the cell capacitance determine the device kinetics and functions. We evidence for first time experimentally the relation between materials properties and switching/neuromorphic performance, thus providing rules and directions for a rational design of memristive devices.

7. 'Next generation' chromatographic media for biopharmaceutical manufacturing

Abstract

Novel ways to produce bilayered chromatography adsorbent media featuring a functionalised core surrounded by an inert size exclusion layer for nanoplex purification were explored. Surface functionalisation of anion exchange chromatography media via cold atmospheric pressure plasma etching and oxidation was investigated. Both, a dielectric barrier discharge plasma generation system and a fluidised bed underwater reactor produced bead samples with significantly reduced surface binding, while maintaining their core binding capacities. A 3D visualisation method, allowing the study of the binding topography of the spatial distribution of pDNA and BSA adhered to Q ligands within particles was developed. This CLSM method revealed imperfections on the surface of adsorbents, providing additional binding sites for pDNA due to micro crevices. Implementing beads with a more homogenous surface, restricted access media were produced via an AGE activation-partial bromination method. The thickness and homogeneity of the size exclusion layer was controlled via viscosity enhanced reaction diffusion balancing, yielding a distinct layer devoid of ligands. The particles did not show residual pDNA binding and selectivity of core vs surface binding increased by 100-fold cf. previous studies. The commercial adsorbent Capto Core 700 was successfully implemented as a first capture step for pDNA purification from crude E.coli lysates.

30. Influenza Vaccination in Psoriatic Patients - Epidemiology and Patient Perceptions: A German Multicenter Study (Vac-Pso)

Abstract

The risk of developing severe complications from an influenza virus infection is increased in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis (PsO) and atopic dermatitis (AD). However, low influenza vaccination rates have been reported. The aim of this study was to determine vaccination rates in PsO compared to AD patients and explore patient perceptions of vaccination. A multicenter cross-sectional study was performed in 327 and 98 adult patients with PsO and AD, respectively. Data on vaccination, patient and disease characteristics, comorbidity, and patient perceptions was collected with a questionnaire. Medical records and vaccination certificates were reviewed. A total of 49.8% of PsO and 32.7% of AD patients were vaccinated at some point, while in season 2018/2019, 30.9% and 13.3% received an influenza vaccination, respectively. There were 96.6% and 77.6% of PsO and AD patients who had an indication for influenza vaccination due to age, immunosuppressive therapy, comorbidity, occupation, and/or pregnancy. Multivariate regression analysis revealed higher age (p < 0.001) and a history of bronchitis (p = 0.023) as significant predictors of influenza vaccination in PsO patients. Considering that most patients had an indication for influenza vaccination, the rate of vaccinated patients was inadequately low.
