Based on time-lagged data focusing on frontline employees (N=285) operating in five-star hotels in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), we examined the individual and combined effects of empowerment, job satisfaction, and perceived organizational support on employee silence. Using structural equation modeling for data analysis, we explored a hypothetical model. The results indicated that empowerment had a significant negative impact on employee silence while job satisfaction and perceived organizational support had no significant direct impact. However, these latter two variables had an impact when feelings of empowerment were also present. The result suggests indicates that empowerment plays a central (pivotal) role in silence behavior. The implications of these findings for both management practice and future research are discussed.

The manufacturing sector in Malaysia is categorized as one of the dangerous work sectors with a high accident record. The use of heavy machinery, unsafe working conditions, and hazardous materials handling is among the causes of many work-related accidents recorded among factory workers. In addition, the lack of safety training and low safety management commitment towards worker safety also contributed to the increasing number in this statistic. The goal of this investigation is to determine the link between management commitment and safety training on safety behavior among workers. This study involved small and medium factory workers operating in the northern states of peninsular Malaysia. The data for this study was obtained using a questionnaire, while the Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) application was used to perform the data analysis process. The results of the data analysis show that employers' commitment to safety and safety training has a positive relationship with safety behavior among study respondents. Suggestions and improvements to the study are presented at the end of this writing.

Small and medium enterprises are in the midst of enhancing Malaysia's GDP in recent years, despite the uncertain world economic conditions. In 2019, it is expected that 41 per cent of the country's GDP is contributed by SMEs, especially SMEs based on halal products and services. Around 70% from 19 million of the employment in Malaysia have formed in the SME firms, with not less than 5% of them employed by SME’s manufacturing companies. On the contrary, statistics on occupational accidents in Malaysia do not record significant alterations in aggregate. Nevertheless, the manufacturing sector remains a major contributor to the highest pace of industrial accidents in Malaysia. Based on reports announced by the authorities’ agencies, more than half of occupational accidents in Malaysia are due to employee negligence and unsafe behaviour while working. This study focused on identifying the link between safety rules and procedures; and safety communication in determining the workers' safety compliance behaviour. A study utilizing a questionnaire was carried out involving 382 respondents from 50 small and medium manufacturing companies in Kedah, Malaysia. Then, the data were analysed using SPSS that involved data screening and hypothesis testing. The findings demonstrate that safety communication and safety rules and the procedure substantially correlated with safety compliance behaviour. The result of this study would provide the small and medium manufacturing companies with supplementary information on workplace safety, thus creating a safer and healthier working environment.

Scholars suggest that only certain personality traits can easily adapt and react positively to organisational changes and consequently to innovative behaviour. Hence, in this study, we drew upon career construction theory to develop a hypothetical model examining how certain personality traits (i.e., curiosity, focus on opportunity, and resilience) are likely to influence career adaptability and consequently innovative behaviour. To test the model, we used two-wave longitudinal data focusing on 313 frontline employees operating in a random sample of five-star hotels in Dubai. Using Smart-PLS.3, we revealed that employees with a high level of curiosity, focus on opportunity, and resilience tend to increase the likelihood of their career adaptability significantly. In other words, employees with such work-related personality are more likely to adapt to organisational changes and fit different organisational environments. Furthermore, the result of the study found that career adaptability significantly mediated the relationship between these personality traits and innovative behaviour. The findings have significant implications for both theory and practice. They may also be contextual. These implications are discussed.

Drawing upon the Higher Education Leadership Academy Model, a priori proposition was made that Al-Qalb is one of the relevant dimensions in the institutional leadership competencies in higher education institutions. The objective of this study is to examine the content validity of Al-Qalb as one of the dimensions to be incorporated in the institutional leadership competencies framework and measure an analysis of previous literatures related to leadership competencies in the higher education institutions context was carried out to identify and examine relevant attributes in explaining and understanding the construct. The results provide adequate evidence of content validity of Al-Qalb as one of the leadership competencies items based on content validity index (CVI) analysis. This suggests the usability and content validity of the items of Al-Qalb, as one of the leadership competencies elements in the Malaysian higher education institutions.

This study aims to explore the effects of user characteristics as antecedents of technostress towards human resource management information system (HRMIS) in government agencies of Malaysia. To address the research objective, we conducted an exploratory mixed-method study which involved both the semi-structured interviews with HRMIS experts from three state governments of Malaysia and the survey questionnaire of HRMIS end-users. Findings from the content analysis of the interview data have identified three key characteristics of users, namely, attitude, technology readiness, and readiness for change, and have suggested that these characteristics are relevant antecedents of technostress. The PLS analysis from the quantitative survey results have revealed that the experiences of technostress towards HRMIS can be influenced only by user’s attitude. From the theoretical aspects and practical implications, this study provides the researchers insights and understanding of the phenomena for future exploratory studies and valuable guidance for the practitioners to manage strains associated with technostress both in the public and the private sectors. More importantly, this study has not only provided new empirical evidence that extends the generalizability of previous findings particularly on technostress and job outcomes but also different from previous studies in the field of information system by examining the antecedents of technostress in the context of human resource information system (HRIS).

Purpose:Social media is a popular communication tool for college students in many countries including Malaysia.Even though the literature indicates that the use of social media in a higher learning environment is likely to enhance academic performance of college students, the mechanism that explains such association is yet to be explored. Based on the claims that the integration of social media use is purposeful to enhance student engagement, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of student engagement as a potential mediator between social media use and academic performance of college students in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approach: A total number of 227 business students in one of the public universities in Malaysia were randomly chosen to participate in this study.Questionnaire was used as the main data collection technique, which was personally administered during class sessions.Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS). Findings: The result showed the multidimensionality of student engagement. It also indicated that cognitive engagement mediated the relationship between social media and academic performance, but not behavioral, emotional, or agentic engagement. The result suggests that social media has the potential to be used in a learning environment as it promotes cognitive engagement of students in class and subsequently their academic performance and success.Research limitations/implications: One of the limitations of the present study is that the generalizability of the finding to a much larger population of students may be limited as the sampled students were recruited from business students in one of the public universities in Malaysia only. Students of different academic programs in different universities may have a different pattern of using the social media.Practical implications: This study will help higher learning institutions and educators think of ways to integrate the use of social media

Drawing from fraud triangle theory and neutralization theory, the present study adopted fraud triangle theory-like framework to explain negative deviance.The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of neutralization on the relationship between opportunity, job pressure and deviant workplace behavior among faculty members in Nigerian public higher educational institutions (HEIs).The study adapted some established instruments to collect data from 356 full time faculty members in Nigeria and used partial least square structural equation modelling for analysis.Results indicate that neutralization mediated the negative relationship between perceived ethical climate and interpersonal deviance. Also, neutralization mediated the positive relationship between perceived workload and interpersonal deviance as well as the relationship between work pressure and interpersonal deviance.Contrary to expectations, neutralization did not mediate the relationships between the predictors and organizational deviance. To minimize deviance, administrators of HEIs need to strengthen internal mechanisms, which do create opportunity for organizational and interpersonal deviance and review existing workload and work pressure that may constitute pressure on faculty members.In conclusion, the application of FTT-like models such as in the present study will help to formulate preventive strategies against deviance in HEIs.

We examine the relationship between career-related practices and knowledge sharing behaviour in Oman. The practices considered in this study are perceived security, employability, and promotion opportunities. Although studies on knowledge sharing behaviour at work are plentiful, limited empirical evidence exists of the role of careerrelated practices in this regard. Hence, in fulflling this gap, a survey was conducted among 129 employees at both managerial and professional levels across various industries in Muscat, Oman. Using multiple regression analysis, the results showed that all practices signifcantly predicted the dimension of knowledge collecting behaviour, but not knowledge donating behaviour. The implications of the fndings on the importance of putting in place practices to support and develop one's career are discussed as a way to promote knowledge collecting in the organisation.

This paper explored the data collected regarding the study linking organisational culture, leadership styles, human resource management practices and organisational performance. Two hundred and fifty six Saudi Arabia Private firms participated in the study. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) application package version 22. An initial data screening and preliminary analysis was performed in order to ensure that the assumptions of multivariate analysis have not been violated. Specifically, the assessment of missing values, outliers, normality test and multicollinearity test were performed in the present study. We concluded that the data was fit for further multivariate analysis.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of safety participation as a mediator in the relationship between the six facets of safety management practices (i.e. management commitment, safety training, worker’s involvement, safety communication and feedback, safety rules and procedures, and safety promotion policies) and safety compliance.Design/methodology/approach A survey of 74 employees of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia was carried out.Self-reported measures were used to obtain data on workplace safety dimensions and safety behavior. The partial least square structural model analysis was used to ascertain the proposed relationships.Findings The present study found that only three dimensions of safety management practices (management commitment, safety training, and safety rules and procedures) were significantly related to safety compliance. Of these, safety participation mediated the link between management commitment and safety training and safety compliance.Research limitations/implications The small sample size may limit the generalizability of the findings. Second, the correlational nature of the study did not permit causation to be implied.However, despite these limitations, while safety performance can be theorized to trigger the establishment of safety management practices, such theoretical perspective tends to connote reactivity rather than proactivity of the decision-making process.Practical implications The study highlights the role of the voluntary behavior of employees in promoting a safe work environment. Business owners are recommended to provide safety training in which the employees are stressed on their crucial role in safety and use this knowledge to educate and convince their co-workers to work safely.Originality/value Literature indicates the lack of studies on safety research in SMEs.Furthermore, such studies are justified because SMEs are likely to have more risks of occupatio
