Background: This is a cross-sectional study to further understand the effects of axial length elongation on the corneal endothelial cell’s morphology in myopic children. Abnormal changes in the morphology of corneal endothelium are indicators of corneal stress or instability which could be linked to myopia. Methods: 111 school children comprising of 37 emmetropes, 37 mild myopes and 37 moderate myopes aged 8-9 years old were recruited. Visual acuity was measured using the LogMar chart, cycloplegic refraction was determined using an open-field autorefractor (Grand Seiko WAM-5100, Hiroshima, Japan) and refined using subjective refraction. Morphology of corneal endothelial cells [endothelial cell density, coefficient of variation, hexagonality and central corneal thickness] was evaluated using a non-contact specular microscope (Topcon SP-2000P). Axial length was measured with A-scan ultrasound biometry (PacScan Plus, Sonomed Escalon, NY). The correlation between morphology of corneal endothelial cells and axial length were assessed using Pearson Correlation and Linear regression analysis. Results: There was no significant difference in corneal endothelial cells and axial length between gender (p>0.05). Significant reduction in endothelial cells density and hexagonality and increased coefficient of variation was found in eyes of higher myopic power which had longer axial when compared to emmetropes (p2, hexagonality decreased by 2.32% and coefficient of variation increased by 1.75%. Conclusions: There were significant changes in morphology of cornea endothelial cells in young moderate myopic children of Chinese ethnicity at 8-9 years of age. This result provides normative data for Malaysian children of Chinese ethnicity that can be used for comparison and reference for clinical procedures, thereby facilitating decision-making with respect to interventions for myopia control, especially in prescribing contact lens for children.

The aim of this study was to determine whether pattern-reversal Visual Evoked Potential (PRVEP) is affected in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Participants aged ≥ 60 years diagnosed as MCI were invited to participate in a study together with a group of controls. PRVEP was measured using A RETI-port/Scan 21 and stimuli of large and small checks sizes, 1° (60 min of arc) and 0.25° (15 min) respectively were used to obtain responses. The amplitude and implicit times of the MCI and control groups were then compared. A total of 18 MCI participants (age 65.7 ± 3.1 years) and 18 controls (65.1 ± 3.8 years) consented to participate in the study. The amplitude and implicit times for the MCI group using the target sizes of 60 min of arc were 9.80 ± 4.06 μV and 108.83 ± 7.63 ms and for 30 min of arc were 11.00 ± 7.44 μV and 123.96 ± 6.18 ms respectively. Consecutively for the control groups the amplitudes and implicit times were 8.96 ± 3.52μV, 105.85 ± 3.60 ms and 11.97± 6.11 μV, 122.57 ± 8.28 ms. PRVEP results did not reveal significant differences in P100-wave amplitude nor implicit time between the two groups under investigation. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the clinical profile of keratoconus patients attending the contact lens clinic from January 2000 to May 2010. Design: Fifty-five clinical records (99 eyes) were reviewed. Materials and methods: Clinical records of keratoconus patients were reviewed. The data included demography, general and ocular health, keratometric readings (KR), best corrected visual acuity (BCVÃ) using Snellen chart and the type of contact lens prescribed. The severity of KC was classified according to the classification scale of Buxton. Results: Of those 55 patients, 34 (61.8%) were males and 21 (38.2%) were females with 61.8%, 36.4% and 1.8% being Malays, Indians and Chinese, respectively. Around 74% of them had normal general health, 20% had asthma, 3% had allergies with another 3% having tuberculosis. Slit lamp findings showed that 50% of patients had no signs of keratoconus, 9% had hyperemic conjunctiva and 2% had Vogt striae. Mean sphere power, astigmatism and KR was -2.33 ± 3.49DS, -3.61 ± 3.4IDC and 43.83 + 18.35D, respectively. In terms of severity, 12.6%, 52.6%, 28.4% and 6.3% of cases were mild, moderate, advanced and severe. Correlation analysis showed poor correlation between age versus refraction and mean KR. Insignificant difference (p > 0.05) was also found between gender for age, sphere and cylindrical power, mean KR and BCVÃ, using t-test. Conclusion: The clinical profile with regard to ethnicity showed that the majority of patients were Malays, followed by Indians and Chinese. Background : Dyslexia, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting reading skills, poses significant challenges to children's academic performance and quality of life. Despite its rising prevalence and adverse effects, understanding of its relationship with vision anomalies remains limited, particularly in low-resource settings like Nigeria. This study aims to assess the prevalence of binocular vision anomalies (BVAs) among children with and without dyslexia in Kano, Nigeria. Methods : This is a hospital-based, cross-sectional, matched-paired, controlled study conducted at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Eye Clinic in Northern Nigeria. The study included school children who visited the AKTH Eye Clinic from January 2018 to December 2022. Visual acuity tests, external eye examinations and accommodative, binocular vision and oculomotor skills tests were conducted. Descriptive statistics, independent t -tests, Mann-Whitney U tests and Fisher's exact tests were conducted, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results : Forty-four children aged 12 ± 2 years participated. Children with dyslexia reported higher rates of visual symptoms than those without dyslexia, Blurring vision, visual distortion and eye strain were the most prevalent ( p < 0.05) BV symptoms. Accommodative insufficiency), was the most common visual abnormality, and was significantly higher in children with dyslexia than those without dyslexia (45.5% vs. 18.2%). However, other visual anomalies showed no significant difference between groups. There was a high prevalence of binocular vision anomalies in both groups. Binocular test findings showed dyslexic children had significantly lower distance positive fusional vergence recovery values ( p = 0.005). All cases of convergence insufficiency alone were found in the non-dyslexic group. Conclusions : The study found that children with dyslexia residing in Northern Nigeria demonstrated higher rates of visual symptoms, more accommodative insufficiency and lower distance positive fusional vergence recovery values compared to their non-dyslexic counterparts.

Introduction: Corneal characteristics are unique to each eye and can vary among different levels of refractive errors. However, minimal data are available in the literature on corneal characteristics in myopic Malay school children including the difference between the low myopic group and the moderate myopic group. Therefore, this study aims to determine the corneal characteristics of myopic Malay school children and their associations with axial length., Methods: A total of eighty-four data samples were extracted from forty-two myopic Malay school children. Measurements of the central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal curvature, corneal diameter, and axial length were measured using Lenstar LS900, a non-contact optical biometer. Data were later stratified by the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) into a low myopic group and a moderate myopic group, and paired t -test were employed to determine the differences in the corneal characteristics between these two groups. Univariate and multivariate linear regressions were performed to identify factors that are significantly associated with axial length., Results: There was no significant difference in the CCT, corneal curvature and corneal diameter between the low myopic group and the moderate myopic group (t 82 =0.015, P =0.99), (t 82 =-0.802, P =0.43) and (t 82 =-0.575, P =0.57), respectively. Pearson univariate correlation analysis found that axial length significantly correlated with corneal curvature (r=-0.765, P <0.001) and corneal diameter (r=0.614, P <0.001) but no significant correlation found with CCT (r=0.046, P =0.68). Multiple regression analysis showed that axial length was significantly associated with a flatter corneal curvature ( P <0.001), older age ( P <0.001) and larger corneal diameter ( P =0.02)., Conclusion: This study reported the corneal characteristics in myopic Malay school children and its associations with axial length. This study illustrates and quantifies the changes on corneal tissue between the paraffin-embedded and resin-embedded blocks and thus, selects a better target in investigational ophthalmology and optometry via light microscopy. Corneas of two cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were used in this study. The formalin-fixed cornea was prepared in paraffin block via the conventional tissue processing protocol (4-day protocol) and stained with haematoxylin and eosin. The glutaraldehyde-fixed cornea was prepared in resin block via the rapid and modified tissue processing procedure (1.2-day protocol) and stained with toluidine blue. The paraffin-embedded sample exhibits various undesired tissue damage and artifact such as thinner epithelium (due to the substantial volumic extraction from the tissue), thicker stroma layer (due to the separation of lamellae and the presence of voids) and the distorted endothelium. In contrast, the resin-embedded corneal tissue has demonstrated satisfactory corneal ultrastructural preservation. The rapid and modified tissue processing method for preparing the resin-embedded is particularly beneficial to accelerate the microscopic evaluation in ophthalmology and optometry.
