1. The moderating effect of the interaction between joint audit and accounting conservatism on the association between corporate governance and corporate performance

Abstract: AbstractThe study’s purpose is to examine the effects of corporate governance (CG) mechanisms on corporate performance (CP) and the moderating effect of the interaction between joint audit (JA) and accounting conservatism on this relationship in Egypt. From 2016 through 2020, the sample consisted of 61 non-financial Egyptian corporations listed. Panel data analysis with fixed-effect models was utilized to estimate the findings. The findings reveal that CG mechanisms as individual variables and CG index have a significant effect on CP by market- and accounting-based measures. The results also exhibit that the interaction between JA and accounting conservatism moderates and strengthens the relationship between the CG index and CP. The study’s unique contributions materialize in combining individual relationships into a comprehensive model. The model portrays the interaction between JA and accounting conservatism as a moderator in the relationship between CG mechanisms and CP. Furthermore, the study examines market- and accounting-based CP. The findings corroborate the literature and theoretical foundations of CG in emerging markets and focus on effective mechanisms for CG in various economic sectors. This study provides several practical implications for policymakers, auditors, corporations, shareholders, investors and practitioners, especially in emerging markets.

3. The Effect of 12-Week Calisthenics Exercise on Physical Fitness among Obese Female Students

Abstract: Study purpose. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of calisthenics exercise on physical fitness. Materials and methods. 28 obese female students aged 20–30 with a BMI ranging between 30 kg/m2 and 35 kg/m2 were involved in this study. Participants were randomly divided into three groups which comprised a calisthenics exercise group, an aerobic calisthenics exercise and a control group. Sit and reach test (flexibility), sit up test (muscular endurance) and 20-meter shuttle run test (cardiovascular endurance) were measured as physical fitness parameters. All the tests were conducted before and after a 12-week intervention training program. Results. The results of this study indicate that the calisthenics and aerobic calisthenics groups had significant (p < 0.05) improvement in the sit and reach test performance compared to the control group. The aerobic calisthenics group also showed significant (p < 0.05) improvement in the sit up and 20-metre shuttle run test performance compared to the calisthenics and control groups. Conclusions. In conclusion, these study findings demonstrated that calisthenics exercise when combined with aerobic exercise was more effective to improve flexibility, muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance among obese female students compared to calisthenics exercise only. Therefore, it is suggested that fitness trainers should consider combining calisthenics exercise with aerobics in the training program to improve flexibility, muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

Abstract: 2020 is a very challenging year because of the covid-19 pandemic and this completely changed the music education landscape. In the past, learning musical instruments could be done face to face, now it is impossible. If no action is taken, this situation could cause stress among students, especially those who learning gamelan ensemble instruments. Unlike other musical instruments, the ensemble gamelan is expensive and student cant afford to buy it. That is why set of gamelan is only owned by the university and placed in the faculty only. Due to this, students who live far away are unable to practice their gamelan instrument due to movement control order these days. Therefore, this study introduces Gamelan E-Learning Techniques, which is the concept of learning gamelan basic hand techniques using a simulation methods for keromong, gambang, saron and gendang. The uniqueness of this study is due to the emphasis on the basic hand techniques of gamelan. By using google class application as well, lecturers can upload learning videos as well as assessment of student game techniques online can be done. This study uses experimental case study method with qualitative approach. The participants consisted of second semester of 36 students who attended the AME 3082 gamelan course at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).

5. Stationary Conditions and Characterizations of Solution Sets for Interval-Valued Tightened Nonlinear Problems

Abstract: In this paper, we obtain characterizations of solution sets of the interval-valued mathematical programming problems with switching constraints. Stationary conditions which are weaker than the standard Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions need to be discussed in order to find the necessary optimality conditions. We introduce corresponding weak, Mordukhovich, and strong stationary conditions for the corresponding interval-valued mathematical programming problems with switching constraints (IVPSC) and interval-valued tightened nonlinear problems (IVTNP), because the W-stationary condition of IVPSC is equivalent to Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions of the IVTNP. Furthermore, we use strong stationary conditions to characterize the several solutions sets for IVTNP, in which the last ones are particular solutions sets for IVPSC at the same time, because the feasible set of tightened nonlinear problems (IVTNP) is a subset of the feasible set of the mathematical programs with switching constraints (IVPSC).

6. Financial literacy as a moderator linking financial resource availability and SME growth in Ghana

Abstract: The argument holds that visionary and dynamic small and medium enterprises (SMEs) tend to position growth at the centre of strategy. However, there has been a growing body of literature that has examined how financial literacy can support owner-managersof SMEs in making solid financial decisions that will enhance the growth of their businesses. In the present study, financial literacy and financial resource availability were modelled as different antecedents of SMEs growth. Nevertheless, the boundary condition for such models has received very little attention in the context of Ghana. Accordingly, in regard to resource-based view (RBV) logic, the current research examined the implications of contingency variable financial literacy (proficiency) on the relationship between financial resource availability and SMEs growth, particularly in the context of Ghana. The findings of the current research revealed that high financial literacy led to more positive effect of financial resource availability on SMEs growth.

Abstract: The connection between generalized convexity and symmetry has been studied by many authors in recent years. Due to this strong connection, generalized convexity and symmetry have arisen as a new topic in the subject of inequalities. In this paper, we introduce the concept of interval-valued preinvex functions on the coordinates in a rectangle from the plane and prove Hermite–Hadamard type inclusions for interval-valued preinvex functions on coordinates. Further, we establish Hermite–Hadamard type inclusions for the product of two interval-valued coordinated preinvex functions. These results are motivated by the symmetric results obtained in the recent article by Kara et al. in 2021 on weighted Hermite–Hadamard type inclusions for products of coordinated convex interval-valued functions. Our established results generalize and extend some recent results obtained in the existing literature. Moreover, we provide suitable examples in the support of our theoretical results.

8. Financial Risk Ratios and Earnings Management: Reducing Uncertainties in Shariah-compliant Companies

Abstract: This study examines whether Shariah-compliant companies practice earnings management by investigating the relationship among the risk of financial distress, leverage, and free cash flow in discretionary accruals, which function as a substitute for earnings management. This empirical research is conducted on a sample of Malaysian Shariah-compliant companies from all industries in Bursa Malaysia from 2012 to 2014. Results show that Shariah-compliant companies are highly influenced by the risk of financial distress, leverage, and free cash flow. This study argues that working as either Shariah-compliant or non-Shariah-compliant does not affect the level of earnings management through financial distress, high leverage, and free cash flow by managers. Results should be of interest to stakeholders, shareholders, and regulatory bodies (i.e., the Shariah Advisory Council and the Securities Commission) that oversee the accountability of corporate financial reporting to prevent earnings management in Shariah-compliant companies. Findings can also aid relevant authorities (i.e., the Shariah Advisory Council and the Security Commission) in Malaysia in overcoming or reducing problems related to earnings management. This study is one of the most significant works in Malaysia in terms of sample size and methodology. It argues that the three elements of earnings management (i.e., financial distress, high leverage, and free cash flow) influence better disclosure of reported earnings.

Abstract: In this paper, we establish Fritz John stationary conditions for nonsmooth, nonlinear, semidefinite, multiobjective programs with vanishing constraints in terms of convexificator and introduce generalized Cottle type and generalized Guignard type constraints qualification to achieve strong S—stationary conditions from Fritz John stationary conditions. Further, we establish strong S—stationary necessary and sufficient conditions, independently from Fritz John conditions. The optimality results for multiobjective semidefinite optimization problem in this paper is related to two recent articles by Treanta in 2021. Treanta in 2021 discussed duality theorems for special class of quasiinvex multiobjective optimization problems for interval-valued components. The study in our article can also be seen and extended for the interval-valued optimization motivated by Treanta (2021). Some examples are provided to validate our established results.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider convex multiobjective optimization problems with equality and inequality constraints in real Banach space. We establish saddle point necessary and sufficient Pareto optimality conditions for considered problems under some constraint qualifications. These results are motivated by the symmetric results obtained in the recent article by Cobos Sánchez et al. in 2021 on Pareto optimality for multiobjective optimization problems of continuous linear operators. The discussions in this paper are also related to second order symmetric duality for nonlinear multiobjective mixed integer programs for arbitrary cones due to Mishra and Wang in 2005. Further, we establish Karush–Kuhn–Tucker optimality conditions using saddle point optimality conditions for the differentiable cases and present some examples to illustrate our results. The study in this article can also be seen and extended as symmetric results of necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for vector equilibrium problems on Hadamard manifolds by Ruiz-Garzón et al. in 2019.

11. Linking Corporate Risk Disclosure Practices with Firm-Specific Characteristics in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This study explores Corporate Risk Disclosure practices (CRD) in the annual reports of Saudi (non-financial) listed companies and investigates the relationship between the Saudi firm-specific characteristics and the level of such practices. Using content analysis of a sample of 307 company-year observations over the period of 2008-2011, the results indicate that Saudi Arabia provides a moderate level of CRD among the developed and developing countries. However, the content of this CRD is found to be of a low quality, by including non-financial, qualitative, neutral, or non-time-specific information. In addition, the unbalanced panel regression analysis shows a significant positive influence of firm size and audit firm size on the level of CRD. This indicates that Saudi companies which disclose higher risk-related information are those characterised by their larger size, and are audited by the Big 4 audit firms. This study contributes to the risk literature by providing an initial understanding of the CRD practices and their variations in light of the firm-specific characteristics in emerging markets in general and Arab countries in particular..

Abstract: This scoping review investigates the potential of bite-sized learning approach in music education. The review identified articles from Scopus and ERIC databases, revealing that bite-sized learning is widely discussed in the field of ICT, mathematics, and medicine. Bite-sized learning is pedagogical and pragmatic, providing easy access, convenience, and reducing cognitive load. The study suggests that music educators can incorporate bite-sized learning by refining music content into manageable small units, utilizing flexible platforms such as TikTok, and tailoring the approach according to learner interests. Bite-sized learning can improve the quality of learning by creating an enjoyable, useful, and understandable learning session, reducing time to mastery, and improving mental health. Moreover, bite-sized learning can align with the 21st century learning traits such as personalization. This review highlights the potential of bite-sized learning in music education and recommends further research to examine its effectiveness in various instruments and related subjects. The study concludes that bite-sized learning can be recognized as a pragmatic, flexible, brevity and personalized learning approach that aligns with the needs of modern learners for the 21st century.

13. Lessons from experience: ESL student teachers' reflection during practicum through reflective journals

Abstract: Reflection is a prospective alternative in exploring student teachers’ thinking during practicum. The data gained from student teachers’ reflection are significant in informing teacher education programs on how to equip pre-service teachers to become quality teachers. It is also crucial in addressing issues and conflicts highlighted by student teachers when they interact with the real context. This study is conducted with six semester seven student teachers undergoing their Bachelor in Education with honors Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) program. The student teachers were asked to write reflective journal entries throughout the 14 weeks of their teaching practicum experience. The aim of the study is to identify the focus of the student teachers’ reflection and the challenges faced by them during practicum. Data were gathered using the reflective journal entries and semi-structured interviews with all the participants. The data were analyzed according to emerging themes. The findings indicated that the student teachers focus on three main themes in their reflections, which are managing learning, pedagogy and teacher attributes. While the challenges highlighted were difficulty in socializing with members of the institution, lack of professional support and lack of ability to manage a classroom.

Abstract: A sustainable super-hydrophobic coating composed of silica from palm oil fuel ash (POFA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was synthesised using isopropanol as a solvent and coated on a glass substrate. FESEM and AFM analyses were conducted to study the surface morphology of the coating. The super-hydrophobicity of the material was validated through goniometry, which showed a water contact angle of 151°. Cytotoxicity studies were conducted by assessing the cell viability and cell morphology of mouse fibroblast cell line (L929) and hamster lung fibroblast cell line (V79) via tetrazolium salt 3-(4–dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and microscopic methods, respectively. The clonogenic assay was performed on cell line V79 and the cell proliferation assay was performed on cell line L929. Both results validate that the toxicity of PDMS: SS coatings is dependent on the concentration of the super-hydrophobic coating. The results also indicate that concentrations above 12.5 mg/mL invariably leads to cell toxicity. These results conclusively support the possible utilisation of the synthesised super-hydrophobic coating for biomedical applications.

17. Characterization and Biodegradability of Rice Husk-Filled Polymer Composites

Abstract: The fabrication of affordable biodegradable plastics remains a challenging issue for both the scientific community and industries as mechanical properties and biodegradability improve at the expense of the high cost of the material. Hence, the present work deals with fabrication and characterization of biodegradable polymer with 40% rice husk waste filler and 60% polymer-containing mixture of polybutylene succinate (PBS) and poly butylenes adipate-Co-terephthalate (PBAT) to achieve good mechanical properties, 92% biodegradation in six months, and competitive pricing. The challenge in incorporating high amounts of hydrophilic nature filler material into hydrophobic PBS/PBAT was addressed by adding plasticizers such as glycerol and calcium stearate. The compatibilizers such as maleic anhydride (MA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was used to improve the miscibility between hydrophobic PBS/PBAT and hydrophilic filler material. The component with the formulation of 24:36:40 (PBS/PBAT/TPRH) possessed the tensile strength of 14.27 MPa, modulus of 200.43 MPa, and elongation at break of 12.99%, which was suitable for the production of molded products such as a tray, lunch box, and straw. The obtained composite polymer achieved 92% mass loss after six months of soil burial test confirming its biodegradability.

18. Impact of Citral and Phloretin, Alone and in Combination, on Major Virulence Traits of Streptococcus pyogenes

Abstract: Streptococcus pyogenes is well documented as a multi-virulent and exclusively human pathogen. The LuxS-based signaling in these bacteria has a crucial role in causing several infections through pathways that are pathogenic. This study evaluated the individual and synergistic effects of citral and phloretin against S. pyogenes in relation to major virulence traits. The in vitro synergy of citral and phloretin was evaluated by the checkerboard method. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) values were calculated to determine the interactions between the inhibitors. The bacteria’s virulence properties were tested in the presence of the molecules, individually as well as in combination. Molecules’ cytotoxicity was tested using human tonsil epithelial cells. The synergistic effects of the molecules on the expression of biofilm and quorum sensing genes were tested using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The molecules were also tested for their impact on LuxS protein by molecular docking, modeling, and free-energy calculations. When the two molecules were assessed in combination (synergistic effect, FIC Index of 0.5), a stronger growth inhibitory activity was exhibited than the individual molecules. The cell surface hydrophobicity, as well as genes involved in quorum sensing and biofilm formation, showed greater suppression when the molecules were tested in combination. The in silico findings also suggest the inhibitory potential of the two molecules against LuxS protein. The binding orientation and the binding affinity of citral and phloretin well support the notion that there is a synergistic effect of citral and phloretin. The data reveal the combination of citral and phloretin as a potent antibacterial agent to combat the virulence of S. pyogenes.

In order to develop new entrepreneurial skills and capabilities they need to adopt and learn advanced technologies and market uncertainties and convert this knowledge as an effective tool in spin-off companies. In this paper we review Malaysian trend in this context and role of different universities and identifying the abilities they have had to develop and assess their capabilities with organizations networks for their operations. Abstract: Large quantities of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus sajor caju. )spent medium (MSM) were disposed of as agricultural waste to the environment and thereby constituting environmental pollution. Therefore the study was conducted to examine the feasibility of using MSM as glucose source in comparison to RSD and GM under different NaOH pretreatment techniques and at the same enzymatic saccharification condition. The composition analysis proved that decreases in lignocellulosic contents occurred after cultivation of The amount of lignin, hemicelluloses, and cellulose in MSM showed lower values than those in RSD and GM which were 22.40, 27.93, and 27.97% respectively. The surface morphology of MSM appeared to be rough and broken and traces of hyphen on the fibre surface were observed as a result from the mushroom cultivation process. RSD and FM had an even and smooth flat surface, indicating a rigid and highly ordered surface structure. The highest glucose yield were obtained from MSM under all three NaOH pretreatment techniques (autoclaving at 121°C, heating in water bath, soaking at room temperature), that were 31.07, 30.13, and 21.97, g/ dry substrate respectively. The amount of glucose obtained from RSD and GM under the same treatments were comparable.

25. Insight into the effect of inhibitor resistant S130G mutant on physico-chemical properties of SHV type beta-lactamase: a molecular dynamics study.

Abstract: Bacterial resistance is a serious threat to human health. The production of β-lactamase, which inactivates β-lactams is most common cause of resistance to the β-lactam antibiotics. The Class A enzymes are most frequently encountered among the four β-lactamases in the clinic isolates. Mutations in class A β-lactamases play a crucial role in substrate and inhibitor specificity. SHV and TEM type are known to be most common class A β-lactamases. In the present study, we have analyzed the effect of inhibitor resistant S130G point mutation of SHV type Class-A β-lactamase using molecular dynamics and other in silico approaches. Our study involved the use of different in silico methods to investigate the affect of S130G point mutation on the major physico-chemical properties of SHV type class A β-lactamase. We have used molecular dynamics approach to compare the dynamic behaviour of native and S130G mutant form of SHV β-lactamase by analyzing different properties like root mean square deviation (RMSD), H-bond, Radius of gyration (Rg) and RMS fluctuation of mutation. The results clearly suggest notable loss in the stability of S130G mutant that may further lead to decrease in substrate specificity of SHV. Molecular docking further indicates that S130G mutation decreases the binding affinity of all the three inhibitors in clinical practice.

26. Inhibitory effect of metformin and pyridoxamine in the formation of early, intermediate and advanced glycation end-products.

Abstract: BackgroundNon-enzymatic glycation is the addition of free carbonyl group of reducing sugar to the free amino groups of proteins, resulting in the formation of a Schiff base and an Amadori product. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is one of the carbonyl species which reacts rapidly with the free amino groups of proteins to form advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The highly reactive dihydroxyacetone phosphate is a derivative of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), and a product of glycolysis, having potential glycating effects to form AGEs. The formation of AGEs results in the generation of free radicals which play an important role in the pathophysiology of aging and diabetic complications. While the formation of DHA-AGEs has been demonstrated previously, no extensive studies have been performed to assess the inhibition of AGE inhibitors at all the three stages of glycation (early, intermediate and late) using metformin (MF) and pyridoxamine (PM) as a novel inhibitor.Methodology/principal findingsIn this study we report glycation of human serum albumin (HSA) & its characterization by various spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, inhibition of glycation products at all the stages of glycation was also studied. Spectroscopic analysis suggests structural perturbations in the HSA as a result of modification which might be due to generation of free radicals and formation of AGEs.ConclusionThe inhibition in the formation of glycation reaction reveals that Pyridoxamine is a better antiglycating agent than Metformin at all stages of the glycation (early, intermediate and late stages).

27. Design, synthesis, evaluation and thermodynamics of 1-substituted pyridylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivatives as cysteine protease inhibitors.

Abstract: Targeting papain family cysteine proteases is one of the novel strategies in the development of chemotherapy for a number of diseases. Novel cysteine protease inhibitors derived from 1-pyridylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine representing pharmacologically important class of compounds are being reported here for the first time. The derivatives were initially designed and screened in silico by molecular docking studies against papain to explore the possible mode of action. The molecular interaction between the compounds and cysteine protease (papain) was found to be very similar to the interactions observed with the respective epoxide inhibitor (E-64c) of papain. Subsequently, compounds were synthesized to validate their efficacy in wet lab experiments. When characterized kinetically, these compounds show their Ki and IC50 values in the range of 13.75 to 99.30 µM and 13.40 to 96.50 µM, respectively. The thermodynamics studies suggest their binding with papain hydrophobically and entropically driven. These inhibitors also inhibit the growth of clinically important different types of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria having MIC50 values in the range of 0.6-1.4 µg/ml. Based on Lipinski's rule of Five, we also propose these compounds as potent antibacterial prodrugs. The most active antibacterial compound was found to be 1-(2-pyridyl)-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine (3a).

Abstract: The current study aimed to evaluate the bioequivalence of a new generic combination of simvastatin and ezetimibe with the reference formulation. An open‐label, randomized, 3‐period, 3‐sequence, crossover study, including 60 healthy volunteers, was implemented. Participants received the test and reference formulation, each containing 20 mg of simvastatin and 10 mg of ezetimibe as a single‐dose tablet, separated by a minimum of 2‐week washout periods. Blood samples were collected for 20 time points from predose to 72 hours after the dose. The total ezetimibe assay was carried out using a validated liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry, while unconjugated ezetimibe, simvastatin, and simvastatin β‐hydroxy acid determination was done via a validated ultra‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry. Each assay was preceded by a liquid‐liquid extraction step. The pharmacokinetic parameters were derived using noncompartmental analysis and then compared between the reference and test formulations via a multivariate analysis of variance. No statistical difference was found in under the concentration‐time curve from time 0 to the last quantifiable concentration and maximum concentration of unconjugated ezetimibe, total ezetimibe, and simvastatin between the reference and test formulations. The 90% confidence intervals of unconjugated ezetimibe, total ezetimibe, and simvastatin natural log‐transformed under the concentration‐time curve from time 0 to the last quantifiable concentration, and maximum concentration were in the range of 80%‐125% as per the bioequivalence acceptance criteria. Abstract: Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia is a rare myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by hyperactive RAS signaling. Neurofibromin1 (encoded by the NF1 gene) is a negative regulator of RAS activation. Patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 harbor loss-of-function mutations in NF1 and have a 200- to 500-fold increased risk of juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. Leukemia cells from patients with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia display hypersensitivity to certain cytokines, such as granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. The granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor utilizes pre-associated JAK2 to initiate signals after ligand binding. JAK2 subsequently activates STAT5, among other downstream effectors. Although STAT5 is gaining recognition as an important mediator of growth factor signaling in myeloid leukemias, the contribution of STAT5 to the development of hyperactive RAS-initiated myeloproliferative disease has not been well described. In this study, we investigated the consequence of STAT5 attenuation via genetic and pharmacological approaches in Nf1-deficient murine models of juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. We found that homozygous Stat5 deficiency extended the lifespan of Nf1-deficient mice and eliminated the development of myeloproliferative neoplasm associated with Nf1 gene loss. Likewise, we found that JAK inhibition with ruxolitinib attenuated myeloproliferative neoplasm in Nf1-deficient mice. Finally, we found that primary cells from a patient with KRAS-mutant juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia displayed reduced colony formation in response to JAK2 inhibition. Our findings establish a central role for STAT5 activation in the pathogenesis of juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia and suggest that targeting this pathway may be of clinical utility in these patients.
