Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly attractive porous materials with applications spanning the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering. Their exceptional porosity and structural flexibility have led to widespread use in catalysis, separation, biomedicine, and electrochemistry. Currently, most MOFs are synthesized under equilibrium liquid-phase reaction conditions. Here we show a general and versatile non-equilibrium flame aerosol synthesis of MOFs, in which rapid kinetics of MOF formation yields two distinct classes of MOFs, nano-crystalline MOFs and amorphous MOFs. A key advantage of this far-from-equilibrium synthesis is integration of different metal cations within a single MOF phase, even when this is thermodynamically unfavorable. This can, for example, produce single-atom catalysts and bimetallic MOFs of arbitrary metal pairs. Moreover, we demonstrate that dopant metals (e.g., Pt, Pd) can be exsolved from the MOF framework by reduction, forming nanoclusters anchored on the MOF. A prototypical example of such a material exhibited outstanding performance as a CO oxidation catalyst. This general synthesis route opens new opportunities in MOF design and applications across diverse fields and is inherently scalable for continuous production at industrial scales.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a disease of significant concern with higher mortality rates. Conventional treatment approaches have several drawbacks, leading to the opening of new research avenues in the field of nanoparticle-based cancer therapeutics. The study aimed at the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Pm-AuNPs) from the aqueous bark extract of Pterocarpus marsupium, followed by its characterization and in vitro anticancer evaluation against OSCC. The synthesized Pm-AuNPs were characterized using UV–visible spectroscopy, particle size analyser, zeta potential, FTIR and SEM techniques. The anticancer potential of the Pm-AuNPs was evaluated against OSCC cell lines (SCC29b, SSC154 and OECM-1) through in vitro assays. The IC50 value was found to be 25 ± 1.2, 45 ± 1.5 and 75 ± 2.1 µg/mL for the three OSCC cell lines, elucidating Pm-AuNPs cytotoxic effects and mechanism of action. Intracellular ROS and SOX detection, mitochondrial transmembrane potential analysis and apoptosis detection were used to confirm the activity of Pm-AuNPs against OSCC. Acute toxicity studies on Wistar rats confirmed the non-toxic nature of the Pm-AuNPs at a higher dose concentration up to 2000 mg/kg body weight. The findings underscore Pm-AuNPs as promising candidates for future anticancer therapeutics, providing insights into their mechanism of action and therapeutic efficacy against OSCC.

Background: The development of periodontal diseases has multifactorial causes including genetic factors. Limited investigations have been conducted to explore the association between ABO blood groups and the development and progression of periodontal diseases. Aim: To evaluate and assess the association of ABO Phenotype and Rhesus factor with oral hygiene status, severity of chronic periodontitis and blood parameters like hemoglobin level and Platelet count in localized and generalized chronic periodontitis. Material and methods: Study was carried out on 100 patients, out of which 80 patients of Generalized Chronic Periodontitis and 20 patients of Localized Chronic Periodontitis. Patients were categorized into Mild, Moderate and Severe Periodontitis. Result: A highly significant association was found between severity of periodontitis and blood groups with blood group B and O were found to be at a greater risk to develop moderate to severe form of chronic periodontitis. Also subjects with blood group B and O showed worst oral hygiene among all the blood groups. Also patients suffering from chronic periodontitis showed a general trend towards lower limit of both hemoglobin level and platelet. Conclusion: Genetic factors such as ABO blood group antigens may act as a risk influencer that plays a role in progression and severity of the chronic periodontitis, with blood group B and O being worst affected. Another observation was that a long standing case of chronic periodontitis can lead to anemia thus having systemic implications.

Abstract Background Curcumin (CUR) is a natural polyphenol and one of the key phytoconstituents found in the rhizomes of Curcuma Longa. It exhibits various pharmacological properties, encompassing antioxidant, anticancer effects, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory, among several others. A significant drawback of using CUR is its limited bioavailability, which primarily depends on gut microorganisms responsible for converting it into its bioavailable form. Therefore, the contemporary study intended to formulate a novel PLAROsomal vesicular delivery of CUR, i.e., CUR-PLAROsomes employing a design of experiments approach to examine the influence of various process parameters, such as particle size and drug percentage release. Result The prepared CUR-PLAROsomes were characterized for their physicochemical properties using various hyphenated tools. The CUR-PLAROsomes exhibited sizes ranging from 40 to 300 nm, and the optimized batch demonstrated a drug entrapment of 86.38 ± 0.22%. In-vitro anticancer studies were conducted using human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (COLO320DM) and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7). CUR-PLAROsomes exhibited significant in-vivo anti-inflammatory potential against carrageenan-induced paw edema. CUR-PLAROsomes were more potent against COLO320DM and MCF-7 cell lines, even at lower concentrations, than pure CUR. Conclusion Furthermore, based on the observations, it exhibits potential as an anti-inflammatory agent, suggesting that PLAROsomes are an effective vesicular drug delivery system. Highlights Newly introduced PLARosome is a next generation of Liposomes which have gain popularity owing to its better adaptability to overcome leakage problem of vesicular drug delivery system. This is the pioneer attempt to prepare Curcumin-loaded PLARosome as an anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activity. Nano size of the PLAROsomes may contribute to enhance the efficacy of Curcumin as a target specific drug delivery system. Site specific delivery of phytoconstituents is possible by use of PLAROsomes as a novel drug delivery system. Graphical abstract

Background and objective: Visfatin, a pleotropic mediator mostly produced by visceral fat, is crucial in controlling the immunological and defensive systems. It serves the roles of a cytokine, an enzyme involved in energy metabolism, and a growth factor. The objective of the present study was to assess the impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy (scaling and root planing) on visfatin concentrations in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid in individuals with Periodontitis (stage-II grade-A) Materials and methods: 54 individuals were divided into Group A (Periodontally Healthy) and Group B1(Periodontitis baseline) based on periodontal parameters including plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and radiographic parameters. After NSPT (SRP), Group B1 patients were recalled after 4 weeks, constituting Group B2 (post NSPT group B1). At baseline and 4 weeks after non-surgical periodontal therapy (SRP), all clinical parameters, salivary and GCF samples were recorded. An ELISA kit was used to measure the levels of visfatin. Using the paired t-test, unpaired t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient, data were analysed using SPSS 15. Results: After non-surgical periodontal treatment (SRP), the mean salivary and gingival crevicular fluid concentration of visfatin considerably decreased to a level comparable to periodontal health. In all groups, GCF visfatin concentration was higher than salivary concentration of visfatin. In periodontitis patients, visfatin concentration in GCF was 1.5 times higher than in saliva. Conclusion: The results of this investigation suggest a direct correlation between salivary and gingival crevicular fluid visfatin concentration and periodontal tissue inflammation and disease activity.

This paper summarizes the spatial-temporal analysis of aerosol dust loading and aerosol dust extinction over the Indian subcontinent for identifying trends and patterns for a period of 40 years from 1980 to 2019. These analyses are based on the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) data using Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2. The high-resolution data of CALIPSO indicate a high concentration of dust column mass density over the northwestern part of India. It increases from central India to Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir regions. Mean dust aerosol optical depth also suggests an increase in the dust loading over northwestern part of the country.

Additionally integrating machine learning methods with multi dataset analyses greatly enhances the thorough examination of cancer associated molecular connections ultimately streamlining drug development and biomarker discovery. This underscores the importance of molecular docking in forecasting interactions, between drugs and their targets within the realm of cancer bioinformatics.

Background The health of school children is crucial for academic performance and overall well-being, influencing their capacity to learn and thrive. Understanding the health dynamics in school settings can help mitigate long term public health issues. This study aims to ascertain the health status of school children residing in slum areas of an urban locality in the southern part of India using International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD- 10) codes, which can inform policies and interventions to promote better health outcomes and educational attainment. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted in a school in urban slum of Hyderabad city to evaluate the health status of school children. Data were collected using a standardized proforma, capturing information such as student demographics (name, age, sex, grade), anthropometry and physical examination findings. Results The study encompassed 3,157 children, comprising 1,840 girls (58%) and 1,317 boys (42%), aged between 5 to 16 years. The mean ± SD age of menarche was found to be 13.1 ± 1.2 years. Among the participants, 62.2% reported at least one health-related issue, with dental caries being the most prevalent (38.1%), followed by skin problems (14.3%) and malnutrition (9.4%). Conclusion In this study, health problems were found to be more common in boys compared to girls. More than half of the children were suffering from at least one health-related issue. Regular school health checkups help to identify and prevent health complications.

This study focused on the nematicidal potential of sea urchin-like zinc oxide nanometrics (SUZN) against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. XRD, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, TEM, and EDX have been utilized to characterize the SUZN. Various SUZN concentrations (150–750 ppm) were examined for their implications for M. incognita second-stage juveniles (J2s) and egg masses, including mortality as well as hatching inhibition. The largest J2s hatching inhibition (83.07%) was seen at 750 ppm SUZN after 48 hours of incubation, whereas the lowest hatching occurred at 150 ppm when compared to the control. SUZN illustrated increased nematicidal efficiency with increasing concentration and incubation duration. LC50 values for J2s were calculated at various time points. In root-dip trials, all SUZN doses substantially reduced J2s penetration into eggplant roots relative to the untreated control. The study emphasizes SUZN’s strong nematicidal activity against M. incognita, suggesting its promise as a long-term alternative to chemical nematicides for root-knot nematode management while reducing the environmental concerns associated with traditional pesticides.

The work presents the design and performance evaluation of an all-optical AND logic gate exploiting the light beam interference effect. It showcases a novel configuration of oriented air-holes meticulously drilled into a silicon substrate, forming an easy-to-fabricate two-dimensional photonic crystal (2D-PC) arrangement. The comprehensive examination of the proposed gate has been carried out using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Results demonstrate the gate’s capability to accurately satisfy its truth tables at a calculated wavelength of 1550 nm, which is imperative for C-band fiber-optic communication systems. The device’s structure boasts a unique 60-degree bend geometry to obtain a compact structure with minimum device area of 40.8μm2 and a substantially high contrast ratio (CR) of 8.15. The response time of 0.12 ps is the lowest among the state-of-the-art 2D-PC AND gates, as per the authors’ knowledge.

Background Healthcare-associated urinary tract infections (HAUTIs) caused by gram-negative pathogens have emerged as a global concern. So far, little is known about the epidemiology of extended-spectrum β lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in HAUTIs in India. The study was carried to determine the antibiotic resistance pattern and ESBL-producing genes in E. coli and K. pneumoniae strains isolated from HAUTIs in a tertiary institute in North India. Methods A total of 200 consecutive, nonduplicate clinical isolates of E. coli and 140 isolates of K. pneumoniae from hospitalized patients with UTI were collected during a period of 1 year. Strains were studied for the presence of ESBL genes (blaCTX-M1, blaCTX-M2, blaCTX-M9, blaCTX-M15, blaSHV, blaTEM, blaOXA-1, blaVEB, blaPER-2, and blaGES) by multiplex polymerase chain reaction using gene-specific primers. Results ESBL was detected in 82.5% (165 out of 200) isolates of E. coli and 74.3% (104 out of 140) isolates of K. pneumoniae by phenotypic confirmatory testing. From 269 phenotypically positive ESBL isolates, blaTEM (49.4%) was the most common genotype followed by blaCTX-M1 (31.97%), blaOXA-1 (30.1%), and blaSHV(11.9%) either alone or in combination. In the present study, blaCTX-M-15 (84.89%) was the most common blaCTX-M1-type ESBL. In total, 2.6 and 5.2% of the isolates were positive for PER-2 and VEB genes, respectively. Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on ESBL resistance patterns and ESBL-producing genes in HAUTIs in North India. Our study reports high occurrence with ESBL types CTX-M-1, CTX-M-15, TEM, and SHV. Minor ESBL variants OXA-1, VEB-type, and PER-2-type β-lactamase are also emerging in HAUTIs infections in North India.
