Volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) was developed to inhibit Top of Line Corrosion (TLC) in wet gas pipelines and its injection methods can significantly affect the required dosage and consequently, its efficiency. In this study, a VCI’s efficiency was compared using batch and continuous injection methods. A series of TLC tests, including a 5-day control test, a 7-day continuous injection test (200 ppm of VCI every 3 days), and a 5-day batch injection test (1000 ppm of VCI) were conducted using API 5l X65 carbon steel grade samples. The uniform corrosion rates (UCR) were determined using the Weight Loss method (ASTM G1-03). The pitting rates (ASTM G1 46-21) were assessed with an Infinite Focus Microscope (IFM), and surface morphology characterisation was analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Overall, both tests were unable to efficiently inhibit corrosion, due to under dosage of VCI concentration. However, the batch injection test performed better than the continuous injection test (UCR: 0.40 mm/y vs. 0.69 mm/y; pitting rate: 0.70 mm/y vs. 3.28 mm/y) as it only caused uniform corrosion. The severity of the corroded sample from continuous injection test was due to partial coverage of VCI film on top coupon surfaces, that led to the local breakdown of VCI and consequently, resulted in a high pitting rate. In conclusion, in this testing environment, both methods require a higher concentration of VCI to reduce the corrosion rate efficiently.

The effect of different cinnamon essential oil (CEO) contents on flammability, thermal stability and morphological characteristics of nanocellulose fibre–reinforced starch biopolymer composites was studied. This sugar palm nanocellulose reinforced with sugar palm starch, containing 0–2% CEO, was prepared through solution casting technique. From scanning electron microscopy analysis, the cross-sections of the CEO-containing films showed appearance of micro-porous spots as micro-porous holes because of the occurrence of partial evaporation on the cryo-fractured surface as a result of the vacuum condition. Increment in CEO concentration resulted in increasing trend of the number and size of the micro-porous holes. Significant increase was observed in the thermal stability with the CEO loading when compared with neat composites. Besides that, increasing CEO loading also resulted in decrement of linear burning rate of the composites.

Domestic production of chilli in Malaysia is insufficient which accounted for 52% self-sufficiency level. Poor performance of local varieties under high temperatures above 42°C is one of the major factors affecting chilli production. This study was conducted with the objective of introgress heat-tolerant gene (Hsps) from AVPP0702 donor into Kulai using marker-assisted backcrossing. A total of 68 SSR markers, including Hsp linked markers that showed polymorphism between the parents were used to assess the generation of backcrossing; BC1F1, BC2F1, BC3F1 and BC3F2 and the average RPG percentage of the recurrent parent was found to be 81, 90, 95 and 97%, respectively. The pattern of Hsp expression in the backcross generations was similar to the donor parent (upregulated with more than 4-fold increase). Twelve improved heat tolerant chilli lines were developed. Most of the morphological and agronomical traits were recovered in the selected improved heat-tolerant genotypes from Kulai such as plant height, number of days to 50% flowering, number of fruits, fruit length and total fruit yield per plant. Improved high-yielding heat-tolerant chilli lines showed tolerance to high temperature as well as did not express any negative effect on agronomic traits in comparison with Kulai variety.

- Abstract
Visible light communication (VLC), which is a prominent emerging solution that complements the radio frequency (RF) technology, exhibits the potential to meet the demands of fifth-generation (5G) and beyond technologies. The random movement of mobile terminals in the indoor environment is a challenge in the VLC system. The model of optical attocells has a critical role in the uniform distribution and the quality of communication links in terms of received power and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). As such, the optical attocells positions were optimized in this study with a developed try and error (TE) algorithm. The optimized optical attocells were examined and compared with previous models. This novel approach had successfully increased minimum received power from −1.29 to −0.225 dBm, along with enhanced SNR performance by 2.06 dB. The bit error rate (BER) was reduced to 4.42 × 10−8 and 6.63 × 10−14 by utilizing OOK-NRZ and BPSK modulation techniques, respectively. The optimized attocells positions displayed better uniform distribution, as both received power and SNR performances improved by 0.45 and 0.026, respectively. As the results of the proposed model are optimal, it is suitable for standard office and room model applications.

CARBON steel ,SCANNING electron microscopy ,SURFACE morphology - Abstract
Volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) was developed to inhibit Top of Line Corrosion (TLC) in wet gas pipelines and its injection methods can significantly affect the required dosage and consequently, its efficiency. In this study, a VCI's efficiency was compared using batch and continuous injection methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Congenital tracheoesophageal fistula (TOF) is a rare anomaly. With the development of endoscopic techniques, the diagnosis of TOF has made marked progress. It requires surgical repair in infancy by either open or thoracoscopic approach. Diagnosing and locating the location of fistula may be difficult particularly in smaller fistula. We report three cases of TOF, to highlight the role of bronchoscopy and endoscopy and also the challenges in managing the aforementioned cases, which may present with airway embarrassment.

Sustainable water processing techniques have been extensively investigated and are capable of improving water quality. Among the techniques, photocatalytic technology has shown great potential in recent years as a low cost, environmentally friendly and sustainable technology. However, the major challenge in the industrial development of photocatalyst technology is to develop an ideal photocatalyst which must have high photocatalytic activity, a large specific surface area, harvest sunlight and shows recyclability. Keeping these views, the present review highlighted the synthesis approaches of graphene/metal oxide nanocomposite, characterization techniques and their prominent applications in photocatalysis. Various parameters such as photocatalyst loading, structure of photocatalyst, temperature, pH, effect of oxidizing species and wavelength of light were addressed which could affect the rate of degradation. Moreover, the formation of intermediates during photo-oxidation of organic pollutants using these photocatalysts is also discussed. The analysis concluded with a synopsis of the importance of graphene-based materials in pollutant removal. Finally, a brief overview of the problems and future approaches in the field is also presented.

Pulmonary underdevelopment is a rare congenital disease which manifests as persistent hemithorax opacification at chest radiography. We present three patients with different types of pulmonary underdevelopment, their imaging features and associated anomalies. Case 1 is a premature neonate with persistent respiratory distress. Further imaging confirmed right pulmonary hypoplasia, associated with a patent foramen ovale, patent ductus arteriosus and vertebral anomalies. Case 2 is a 6-year-old child with corrected anorectal malformation, and recurrent pneumonia. Further imaging confirmed left pulmonary aplasia, associated with an aberrant right subclavian artery and vertebral anomaly. Case 3 is a full term neonate who developed excessive drooling of saliva and respiratory distress. Further imaging confirmed right pulmonary agenesis, associated with an atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus and tracheo-oesophageal fistula. Pulmonary underdevelopment is classified into three types: hypoplasia, aplasia and agenesis. The majority of them have associated anomalies. This condition should be considered a differential diagnosis in paediatric patients with an opaque hemithorax on chest radiography.

31. Process analytical technology based approaches for the monitoring and control of size and polymorphic form in pharmaceutical crystallisation processes

615.19 - Abstract
Pharmaceutical crystallisation operation is often critical because it determines product properties, such as the crystal size distribution (CSD) and polymorphic form, that can influence the subsequent downstream operations and the product therapeutic performance. Driven by the United States Food and Drug Administration s (FDA) Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative and the Quality-by-Design (QbD) concept, the development of control approaches, which can improve the manufacturing of products with desired properties, has become of significant interest. This thesis presents the development and application of PAT-based approaches for the monitoring and control of pharmaceutical crystallisation operations that will ensure consistent production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with the desired size and polymorphic form. The approaches utilised Lasentec focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) and attenuated total reflectance ultraviolet (ATR-UV) spectroscopy as the in situ monitoring and control tools. Crystallisations of the APIs that posses multiple polymorphs are both critical and challenging. This was illustrated in this work by the crystallisations of sulfathiazole polymorphs using literature methods. The processes were monitored using FBRM and ATR-UV spectroscopy to define the design range of the process parameters. The defined range could be used as a recipe to reproduce the same quality of crystals. The obtained crystals were characterised using various techniques (optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry, hot-stage microscopy (HSM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffractometry) to assess the success of the crystallisation processes. The combined results of the techniques showed that all methods were able to produce the desired pure polymorphs. As a contribution to the technique of investigating polymorphism, a combined approach of DSC-HSM with image analysis, was introduced. Results show the capability of the approach to provide a unique insight into the polymorphic transformations and thermal behaviour exhibited by the model compound. The novel direct nucleation control (DNC) approach was introduced to control the CSD. The approach utilises information on nucleation, provided by FBRM, in a feedback control strategy that adapts the process variables, so that the desired CSD of product is achieved. It also provides in situ fines removal through the operating policy, rather than having additional equipment and external recycle loops. The approach does not require concentration measurement and has the advantage of being a model-free approach, requiring no information on nucleation or growth kinetics in order to design an operating curve; the system automatically and adaptively detects the boundary of the operating curve. Experimental results, using glycine in water-ethanol mixture as a model system, show the benefits of DNC to produce larger crystals with narrower CSD compared to uncontrolled operations. The capability of seeded cooling crystallization with temperature cycling approach to control crystal size uniformity and polymorphic purity was evaluated. Using sulfathiazole in n-propanol and in water as model systems, the method was found to accelerate the growth and enhance the size uniformity of the crystals, in comparison with runs using a linear temperature profile, by promoting Ostwald ripening. Although the approach is conceptually capable of controlling polymorphic purity of a system, the effect of solvent-mediated nucleation/growth can be more dominant, as shown by the results of the experiments. The insights into this behaviour of sulfathiazole crystals were captured very well by the FBRM. The study also demonstrated the successful use of a simple non-linear function as a calibration model to relate temperature and absorbance data, obtained using the ATR-UV spectroscopy, to solute concentration during the crystallisation process. The effect of temperature cycling, performed during seeded cooling crystallisation, on the surface features of sulfathiazole crystals was investigated using FBRM and ex situ optical microscopy, SEM and atomic force microscopy. It was observed during the initial stage of the process, the heating phases produced crystals with smooth surfaces, whilst the cooling phases promoted growth of features on the surfaces. These changes detected by the FBRM as an increase in the number of coarse counts during heating and a drop during cooling. Laser beam spreading caused by the surface roughness, and signal/chord splitting due to sharp edges are offered as an explanation for the FBRM results. This shows the capability of the FBRM to provide useful information about the changes on the surface of the crystalline products. The information can be used to avoid problems in the downstream operations, or in the final product property due to variations in flowability and friability, which are influenced by the surface property.

Background: Contrast sensitivity (CS) is widely used as a measure of visual function in research and clinical settings. CS is regarded as an important visual parameter, detecting subtle reductions in vision prior to significant reduction in visual acuity. Methods: We examined the agreement between the gold-standard Pelli-Robson chart and a computerized test termed the M&S Smart System II (MSSS-II) in patients with primary pterygium. Ninety-three patients (93 primary pterygium eyes) who visited an ophthalmology clinic were selected. The patients were randomly assessed for CS using the MSSS-II or Pelli-Robson chart. The primary outcome was agreement in log units between these two tests in the assessment of CS in patients with primary pterygium. Results: The mean and standard deviation of CS measurement in the two tests were comparable (1.22 ± 0.56 vs. 1.21 ± 0.57 log units, respectively, p = 0.083). The Bland-Altman plot revealed that the mean difference between the two charts was 0.0016 log units (standard deviation: 0.009 log units) with narrow limits of agreement of -0.0186 to 0.0186. Conclusions: MSSS-II provides an alternative for the clinical assessment of CS using a computerized method that describes the status of visual function in patients with primary pterygium.

The title compound, C28H24N2O3, is a flexible Schiff base, having a dihedral angle of 59.53 (5)° between the mean planes of two phenyl rings bounded in the centre by a single O atom. The dihedral angles between the mean planes of the phenyl rings bonded to the central O atom and the mean planes of the terminal methylphenol rings are 31.47 (6) and 36.03 (5)°, respectively. The sp2-hybridized character of the azanylylidene groups is confirmed by their bond lengths and bond angles. In the crystal, molecules are linked into centrosymmetric dimers by weak C—H...N interactions and connected into dimeric chains through weak C—H...O interactions. These chains are interconnected into a two-dimensional network parallel to (1\overline{2}1) via weak C—H...π interactions.

The power industry is currently undergoing a rapid transformation toward the maximum utilization of renewable energy resources. In grid-connected renewable energy systems, enhancing the voltage stability during the fluctuations in renewable energy outputs can be achieved using a transformer with built-in on-load tap changing. It is one of the main traditional voltage regulation techniques utilized to improve the voltage profile in the power grid. Due to the unpredictable nature of renewable energy penetration, the frequent operation of an on-load tap changer (OLTC) may increase significantly. Despite the proposed methods used to optimize the location and size of renewable generation, there is a lack of empirical or detailed studies that have been looking at the issue of tap changers, mainly the impact of renewable energy storage allocation. The main aim of this paper is to find a compromise approach to mitigate unnecessary tap-changing operation time by wisely siting and sizing the renewable energy storage system (RESS). Initially, a generalized method is proposed to formulate an analytical optimization framework coupled with a renewable storage index. This approach is employed to evaluate the behavior of OLTC in a grid-connected renewable energy system. The formulation is then used to model a decision-making approach to confirm the location and size of RESS, using the analytic network process (ANP) with entropy and technique for order of preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS). The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated and compared using the IEEE benchmark networks. Aspects in relation to the predictions of future operations about the management of renewable energy storage in coordination with voltage regulators in the smart grid context, that will be the subject matter of additional studies are also discussed. The synthesis of binuclear silver(I)-NHC complexes from bis-benzimidazolium salts and silver(I) ions has been carried out via an in-situ deprotonation (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene). The reaction between 1,3-dibromopropane and two moles of N-substituted alkyl benzimidazole (R = methyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, and 4-methyl-benzyl) resulted in the formation of bis-benzimidazolium salts, H
2 L‧2Br- (1–5). Subsequent reactions of the respective salts with excess Ag2 O yielded the formation of bis-NHC binuclear silver(I) complexes with the formula of [Ag2 L2 ]·2PF6 (Ag1-Ag5). All compounds were characterized by1 H and13 C NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis, molar conductivity measurement, melting point analysis, and solubility tests. Single crystal X-ray crystallography data reveals that Ag2 exists as a dinuclear complex with no significant intramolecular argentophilic interactions. Anticancer studies of salts 1-5 and complexes Ag1-Ag5 were carried out by employing breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7). None of the salts showed antiproliferative activity, while all the complexes possessed significant anticancer properties in a dose-dependent manner. The complexes indicate better activity than a positive control except for Ag4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

WATER harvesting ,WATER use ,MASS transfer ,HEAT transfer ,SORPTION ,PHOTOVOLTAIC power systems - Abstract
Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is an important parallel or supplemental freshwater production technique to liquid water resource‐based technologies due to the availability of moisture resources regardless of location and the possibility of realizing decentralized applications. Recent developments to regulate the characteristic features and nanostructures of moisture‐harvesting materials demonstrate new opportunities to improve device efficiency. Focusing on the design of water harvesting materials and the optimization of the overall system, this review sums up the most recent developments in this area and presents prospects for the future development of AWH. An overview of the processes involved in water sorption by various sorbents and the characteristics and functionality of the polyaniline‐based hydrogels developed for AWH is given. Newly reported hydrogel sorbents used for AWH are evaluated, focusing on their benefits, drawbacks, and design methodologies. Several AWH‐specific water harvesters are described and the impact of the system's mass and heat transfer on its operational effectiveness is explored. Finally, potential roadmaps for the development of this technology are detailed and the challenges in this subject from both a basic research and practical application perspective are discussed.
