Background: Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of the acute abdomen; thus, appendectomy is part of most daily emergency surgical duties. It is conducted through either open or laparoscopic approach. Methods: A prospective hospital-based study compared the clinical outcomes of open versus laparoscopic appendectomy for patients with acute appendicitis in El-Mek Nimir University Hospital, Sudan. Results: A total of 550 cases of acute appendicitis were studied, of which 328 (59.6%) underwent open appendectomy surgery and 222 (39.4%) underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. Background: Data on factors predicting axillary lymph node (ALN) metastasis among Sudanese patients with breast cancer are rare. Aim: The aim of this study is to provide baseline information of the clinical and pathological factors predicting ALN metastasis in patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy or breast conserving surgery at Wad-Madani Teaching Hospital, Sudan. Materials and Methods: We performed a prospective study to examine the correlation between ALN status and clinicopathological characteristics of 81 patients with breast cancer. Results: The median age at diagnosis was 47 years (range, 25–85 years). The median number of lymph nodes (LNs) retrieved was 14 (range 2–31). ALNs containing metastases were found in 52 patients (64.2%); more than half of them (n = 30) had three or more positive LNs. Factors associated with lower chance of developing LN metastasis were age more than 60 years, postmenopausal status, smaller tumor size, and tumor that were positive for estrogen receptor and/or progesterone receptor. The number of ALNs retrieved was the only factor which showed statistically significant association with ALNs metastases. Conclusions: Our finding reveals a high incidence of ALN metastasis among patients with breast cancer in Sudan, which is likely due to various factors such as young age at diagnosis and large tumor size as a result of late diagnosis.

Background: Minimal access surgery has revolutionized the field of surgery. Access to the abdominal cavity represents a critical step in laparoscopic procedures. Various techniques have been used to obtain safe access into the abdominal cavity, with no apparent superiority of one technique over another. Aim: This study was conducted to assess the different types of laparoscopic access techniques used at Almak Nimir University Hospital in the period from January to December 2019. Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study compared the use and outcomes of different laparoscopic access techniques in various laparoscopic procedures performed at Almak Nimir University Hospital, (Shendi University, Shendi, Sudan). Results: The study included 324 patients with a mean age of 26.2±15.3 years (range 1–85 years). Most of the patients were female (266 patients, 82.1%). Of the laparoscopic procedures, 77.2% were laparoscopic appendicectomy while 18.8% were laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The Veress needle technique was used in 158 patients (49.7%), the open technique was used in 97 patients (29.9%) and direct trocar insertion was used in 66 patients (20.4%). Direct trocar insertion showed a statistically shorter procedure duration (mean 2.9±0.9 min) compared to the other techniques (p=0.001). Access-related complications occurred in five patients (0.6%), but there was no statistically significant difference between the three access techniques. Conclusion: This study confirms the safety of various access techniques used in laparoscopic procedures; however, the choice of access type should be individualized.
