Currently, chemotherapy is an important method for the treatment of various cancers. Nevertheless, it has many limitations, such as poor tumour selectivity and multi-drug resistance. It is necessary to improve this treatment method by incorporating a targeted drug delivery system aimed to reduce side effects and drug resistance. The present work aims to develop pH-sensitive nanocarriers containing magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSNs) coated with pH-responsive polymers for tumour-targeted drug delivery via the folate receptor. 2-Diethyl amino ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) was successfully grafted on MMSNs via surface initiated ARGET atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), with an average particle size of 180 nm. The end groups of poly (2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) brushes were converted to amines, followed by a covalent bond with folic acid (FA) as a targeting agent. FA conjugated to the nanoparticle surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). pH-Responsive behavior of PDEAEMA brushes was investigated by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). The nanoparticles average diameters ranged from ca. 350 nm in basic media to ca. 650 in acidic solution. Multifunctional pH-sensitive magnetic mesoporous nanoparticles were loaded with an anti-cancer drug (Doxorubicin) to investigate their capacity and long-circulation time. In a cumulative release pattern, doxorubicin (DOX) release from nano-systems was ca. 20% when the particle exposed to acidic media, compared to ca. 5% in basic media. The nano-systems have excellent biocompatibility and are minimally toxic when exposed to MCF-7, and -MCF-7 ADR cells.

Our goal is to develop a structural ceramic for high-temperature applications in which silicon carbide-based materials (SiCs) are used as matrix composites. The potential of SiCs to deposit a mixture of SiC and zirconium diboride (ZrB2) plasma spray coating is analyzed. To deposit thermal barrier layers containing up to 50 vol.% SiC, a high-pressure plasma spray (HPPS) process was used. Although the SiC cannot be deposited by thermal spray, a mixture of SiC and zirconium diboride (ZrB2) was deposited because these two compounds form a eutectic phase at a temperature below SiC decomposition. The preference was two different forms, 3 mm and 1 mm, of graphite substrates with different thickness values. A comparison of the morphology of SiC-ZrB2 coatings before and after thermal treatment was performed by applying heat to the surface of a gas torch and traditional furnace between 800 &deg, C and 1200 &deg, C. The growth of the oxide scale was calculated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and density. The oxide scale consists of a SiO2 layer with ZrO2 groups. The findings indicate a greater potential for the studied material in protecting against high-temperature oxidation and in a wide variety of aerospace applications.

This work presents the synthesis of pH-responsive poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) brushes anchored on hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSN-PDEAEMA) via a surface-initiated ARGET ATRP technique. The average size of HMSNs was ca. 340 nm, with a 90 nm mesoporous silica shell. The dry thickness of grafted PDEAEMA brushes was estimated to be ca 30 nm, as estimated by SEM and TEM. The halogen group on the surface of PDEAMA brushes was successfully derivatized with glucosamine, as confirmed by XPS. The effect of pH on the size of the hybrid nanoparticles was investigated by DLS. The size of fabricated nanoparticle decreased from ca. 950 nm in acidic media to ca. 500 nm in basic media due to the deprotonation of tertiary amine in the PDEAEMA. The PDEAEMA modified HMSNs nanocarrier was efficiently loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) with a loading capacity of ca. 64%. DOX was released in a relatively controlled pH-triggered manner from hybrid nanoparticles. The cytotoxicity studies demonstrated that DOX@HMSN-PDEAEMA-Glucosamine showed a strong ability to kill breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MCF-7/ADR) at low drug concentrations, in comparison to free DOX.

Poly(2‑(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate) brushes (PTBAEMA) are grown from mesoporous silica nanoparticles via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Linear PTBAEMA brushes are protonated and highly swollen at low pH; brushes are collapsed at pH higher than 7.7 due to deprotonation, as determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Quaternization of these brushes is conducted using 2-iodoethanol in alkali media. DLS measurement of nanoparticles shows that surface-confined quaternization occurs and produces pH-responsive brushes with a hydrophobic upper surface. Variation of the 2-iodoethanol reaction time enables the mean degree of surface quaternization. The pH-responsive behaviour of quaternized PTBEAMA brushes at 1 h reaction time indicates low degrees of surface quaternization, dictated by the spatial location of 2-iodoethanol. Almost uniformly quaternized brushes prepared when the conducted for 3 h and became less swollen at low pH than brushes that conducted for 1 h. The intensity of the C − C − O component (286.5 eV) in the C1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum increased, suggesting that the reaction with iodoethanol was successful occurred.

The present work aimed to prepare elastic polymer slices that have semiconductors properties for use in solar cells based on charge transfer (CT) complexation. For this purpose, first six derivatives of 1,8–naphthalimide fluorescent dyes were synthesized. Secondly, the synthesized fluorescent dyes were complexed with p–chloranil acceptor via CT interaction in methanol solvent. The obtained CT complexes were dispersed in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrixes using methylene chloride solvent at room temperature. The obtained polymer sheets were characterized by several spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques, such as IR and UV–vis spectroscopies; and SEM technique. The microstructural and morphological changes occurred in the sheets of the PMMA matrix blended with the CT products were observed using the positron annihilation Doppler broadening (PADB) and the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) techniques. Finally, the photostability and the direct current (DC) electrical characteristics as a function of the temperature for the CT products dispersed in PMMA matrixes have been studied.

Two novel low band gap donor&ndash, acceptor (D&ndash, A) copolymers, poly[9,10-bis(4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)-2,6-anthracene-alt-5,5-(4&prime, 7&prime, bis(2-thienyl)-2&prime, 1&prime, 3&prime, benzothiadiazole-N-5,6-(3,7-dimethyloctyl)dicarboxylic imide)] (PPADTBTDI-DMO) and poly[9,10-bis(4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)-2,6-anthracene-alt-5,5-(4&prime, benzothiadiazole-5,6-N-octyl-dicarboxylic imide)] (PPADTBTDI-8) were synthesized in the present work by copolymerising the bis-boronate ester of 9,10-phenylsubstituted anthracene flanked by thienyl groups as electron&ndash, donor units with benzothiadiazole dicarboxylic imide (BTDI) as electron&ndash, acceptor units. Both polymers were synthesized in good yields via Suzuki polymerisation. Two different solubilizing alkyl chains were anchored to the BTDI units in order to investigate the impact upon their solubilities, molecular weights, optical and electrochemical properties, structural properties and thermal stability of the resulting polymers. Both polymers have comparable molecular weights and have a low optical band gap (Eg) of 1.66 eV. The polymers have low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of about &minus, 5.5 eV as well as the similar lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of &minus, 3.56 eV. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) of PPADTBTDI-DMO and PPADTBTDI-8 did not prove instability with decomposition temperatures at 354 and 313 &deg, C, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies have shown that both polymers have an amorphous nature in the solid state, which could be used as electrolytes in optoelectronic devices.

Water resources are increasingly polluted by toxic heavy metals such as Cadmium (Cd). Cd is particularly dangerous because it accumulates in living organisms leading to diseases affecting the kidneys, bones and lungs. As a result, researchers have been developing effective techniques to remove harmful heavy metals. Currently, purification techniques in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world are inefficient and costly; thus, the development of a cheap, readily available, and natural material for the removal of Cd is of great interest. This work highlights the adsorptive potential of local Saudi bentonite clay extracted from Khulais region in western Saudi Arabia in the removal of toxic Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. We successfully synthesized bentonite clay beads that can be inserted in columns for filtering purposes. The effects of contact time, bentonite mass, PH, temperature, bentonite treatment (washing and calcinations), and the adsorptive potential of bentonite were evaluated. The results show excellent adsorptive capacity of bentonite.

The preparation of anthracene-based low band gap conjugated polymers comprising 2,6-linked anthracene and dithienyl-benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole or dibithiophenyl-benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole alternate repeat units is presented. The photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of the polymers in bulk heterojunction solar cells using PC(71)BM as an acceptor are discussed.

A series of low energy gap polymers comprising 2,7-linked carbazole or fluorene units flanked by thiophene or selenophene repeat units as alternating donor units and benzothiadiazole with or without alkoxy substituents as alternating acceptor repeat units is reported. The effects of replacing thiophene with selenophene in this series of polymers on their optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic device performance when fabricated into bulk heterojunction solar cells using PC70BM as an acceptor are investigated. Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) ranging from 3.34 to 5.41% are obtained with these systems. Thiophene-based polymers are found to have higher efficiency compared to comparable selenophene-based polymers. We tentatively explain such differences on the basis of reduced molar absorbance and reduced charge-carrier mobility in the selenophene-based polymers.
