Background: Postoperative hypotony is associated with choroidal effusion, suprachoroidal haemorrhage, aqueous misdirection syndrome (malignant glaucoma), choroidal folds and hypotony maculopathy, anterior chamber (AC) shallowness or loss and subsequent failure of the original filtration of procedure. This work aimed to study the causes, risk factors, adverse effects, and management plans of ocular hypotony after different glaucoma surgeries. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on 205 eyes underwent glaucoma surgery with follow up for more than 3 months. Patients were divided into two groups: 30 cases were diagnosed with post-operative hypotony, 175 eyes were without hypotony. Patients were subjected to glaucoma diagnosis, type of glaucoma operation and recorded IOP for 3 months at least. Growing data suggest that Aspergillus niger, an endophytic fungus, is a rich source of natural compounds with a wide range of biological properties. This study aimed to examine the antimicrobial and antibiofilm capabilities of the Phragmites australis-derived endophyte against a set of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The endophytic fungus Aspergillus sp. AP5 was isolated from the leaves of P. australis. The chemical profile of the fungal crude extract was identified by spectroscopic analysis using LC-HRESIMS. The fungal-derived extract was evaluated for its antimicrobial activity towards a set of pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella sp., Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger. Moreover, antibiofilm activity toward four resistant biofilm-forming bacteria was also evaluated. Additionally, a neural-networking pharmacophore-based visual screening predicted the most probable bioactive compounds in the obtained extract. The AP5-EtOAc extract was found to have potent antibacterial activities against S. aureus, E. coli, and Klebsiella sp., while it exhibited low antibacterial activity toward P. Vulgaris and P. aeruginosa and displayed anticandidal activity. The AP5-EtOAc extract had significant antibiofilm activity in S. aureus, followed by P. aeruginosa. The active metabolites’ antifungal and/or antibacterial activities may be due to targeting the fungal CYP 51 and/or the bacterial Gyr-B.

We successfully synthesized Cu/Cu2O nanocomposites using the wet chemical synthesis method. All X-ray diffraction (XRD), Reference Intensity Ratio (RIR), and Rietveld refinement methods confirmed that the compounds Cu and Cu2O are free of impurities. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show the morphology and interactions of Cu and Cu2O in the structure. The formation mechanism is also explained by five stages: precursor, nucleation, growth, aging, and reduction. The changes in crystallization parameters under variations in reaction temperature (Tv) and stirring speed (Sv) were confirmed by agreement with the XRD database. The lattice constant in the crystal of nanocomposite increases with rising temperature in the reaction, leading to unit cell expansion, while increasing the stirring—rate leads to a random size distribution of the lattice parameter. Due to the imperfect growth of the crystal, the induced crystallite size was calculated using the Williamson-Hall model, and the precise lattice parameter values were calculated using the Nelson-Riley function.

Ureteral strictures are serious and frequent complications of chronic bilharziasis of the urinary tract are seen. To determine which corrective surgical procedures are most successful, we compared the results of those most commonly done. We retrospectively analyzed our experience with mucosa to mucosa ureterovesical anastomosis (68 ureters), transvesical ureteral meatotomy (30 ureters) are submucosal tunnel ureteroneocystostomy, (UNC; 10 ureters). Complete follow-up data are available for 102 patients (108 ureters); half of these cases were followed for 4 years or even more. It is to be noted that, in our series, only 10 ureters were suitable for submucosal tunnel anastomosis: bilharzial ureters are usually fibrotic, noncompressible, and the vesical mucosa is adherent to the muscular layer - which renders creation of a tunnel difficult or impossible. However, this procedure produced the best results. The conclusion was reached that, whenever possible, antireflux procedures suitable for the bilharzial bladder and ureter should be attempted. Based on this analysis, a prospective clinical trial was carried out, which compared Boari flap UNC (30 ureters), triangular flap ureterovesicoplasty of Girgis et al. (30 ureters), and ileal loop replacement of the pathologic segment (30 ureters). The average period of follow-up was 20 months. Triangular flap and Boari flap were found to be superior to ileal replacement. Ileal replacement is consistently followed by vesicoileal reflux and commonly by persistent urinary tract infection. In consequence, the latter operation must be reserved for cases with extensive ureteral loss or destruction. Antireflux procedures still remain the most desirable methods whenever technically possible.
