9. The Role of Religiosity in Influencing Adolescent and Adult Alcohol Use in Trinidad

Abstract

This study examined the role of religiosity among adolescents' and adults' alcohol use in Trinidad. A stratified random sample design of 369 adolescents and 210 adult parents belonging to the various religious groups in Trinidad was employed. Participants were randomly selected from various educational districts across Trinidad. Adolescent respondents completed a demographic questionnaire and the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-A2 (SASSI-A2). Adult participants completed a similar demographic questionnaire and questions taken from the SASSI-A2 that related to alcohol use. MANOVA analyses revealed significant main effects for adolescents' and adults' alcohol use as it relates to religious affiliation and frequency of religious service attendance. It is hoped that these findings will assist health educators in the formulation of intervention programs in Trinidad. (Contains 2 tables.)

11. Integration of radiographic and histological images for the diagnosis of glioblastoma

Abstract

As the number of cancer cases increases, the pathologist's task becomes increasingly difficult. To classify tumours and define their level of aggressiveness, pathologists are faced with analysing a large number of pathological images, hundreds of thousands of them. Computer-aided methods, including artificial intelligence, can potentially improve tumour classification. It makes sense to implement such a system by taking advantage of the two complementary MRI and histological data. This study proposes to use multiple input convolutional neural networks to predict glioma grade. The proposed method was validated using data from the CPM: RAD-PATH 2020, achieved satisfactory results. We propose a dual path residual convolutional neural network model that trains simultaneously from MRI and pathology images. With this approach, we achieve a validation accuracy of 81%, showing that combining the two image sources yields better overall accuracy.

Abstract

This exploratory cross-sectional study examined the moderating role of age, educational level, number of years of service, ethnicity and social support on the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction among 438 police officers from the eight police divisions in Trinidad. A questionnaire which included scales on demographic variables, job stress, job satisfaction, and the moderating variables was completed. Of the moderators examined, community support was found to be the most significant followed closely by supervisor support. The study's findings have implications for mitigating the effects of job stress and are discussed within the context of social support interventions for police officers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The current study examined the attitudes of in-service police officers and those of new recruits toward the mentally ill, and factors associated with these attitudes. One hundred-and-one new recruits and 337 in-service police officers from 8 police divisions in Trinidad and Tobago were administered the Mental Health Attitude Survey for Police Officers (MHASP) developed by Clayfield, Fletcher, and Grundzinskas (2011). In-service officers had more negative attitudes toward the mentally ill than did new recruits. Willingness to seek psychological help, job stress, job satisfaction, training and social support were significant predictors of officers' attitudes toward the mentally ill. 14. Socio-Demographic Background, Social Support and Depression Levels among Undergraduate Prospective Teachers in Trinidad and Tobago.

Abstract

Teachers experience high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Teacher training programmes provide a critical professional development window influencing practice, and therefore, an understanding of the relationship between the dispositional and emotional states of pre-service teachers remains vital. The purposes of the current study were to: (i) explore levels of depression among prospective teachers in Trinidad and Tobago, (ii) explore variations in the levels of depression among prospective teachers based on demographic factors including age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, student status, and religious affiliation and; (iii) determine if perceived social support from family, friends and significant others play a role in their depressive symptomatologies. Using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Beck's Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to survey students across a four year teacher training programme, the study found that there was a moderately strong relationship between social support and depression. However, this relationship differed based on the providers of social support. Additional examinations of socio-demographic factors suggested that the significance of social support also depends on sex, religious affiliation, and family structures of students. These factors also produced differences between sex and minimal levels of depression, family structure and mild depression, and marital status and moderate depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
