Clinical research on the efficacy of nutraceutical compounds recommended for the relief of osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms has been largely disputed. In addition, no link has been established between its safety and efficacy in Kurdish population. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract + Ginkgo biloba (GLME+) in patients with OA, and analyze the effect of GLME+ on inflammation. Methods: In an open-label, single-group allocation study, 40 patients diagnosed with knee OA were administrated 1000 mg/day of New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract and 100 mg/day of Ginkgo biloba for eight weeks. The outcome measure was scored using Western Ontario and McMaster Universities arthritis index (WOMAC). The serum concentration of inflammatory chemokine (CCL3) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured. An intention-to-treat analysis was employed and subject data at T0 and T8 weeks. Results: Results showed a significant improvement in WOMAC score in post-treated OA patients with GLME+ (P 0.05). Conclusions: GLME+ improved knee joint pain, stiffness, and mobility in OA patients. Two of GLME+'s chondroprotective properties were the reduction of oxidative damage and the inhibition of inflammation, both of which have been linked to the etiology of OA cartilage destruction. The findings indicated that GLME+ may be useful in the treatment of OA patients.

Abstract Background ICU nurses play a critical role in managing delirium in critically ill patients, yet their competency in this area remains under-explored. Aim To assess ICU nurses’ competency including their knowledge, practice, and attitudes toward delirium among critically ill patients. Methods A correlational descriptive study was conducted with 67 nurses in the medical intensive care unit at Suez Canal University Hospitals. Data was collected using an online survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation. Results Nurses showed a moderate knowledge level (M = 8.55), a low practice level (M = 6.62), and positive attitudes (M = 21.65) toward ICU delirium. Abstract Culicoides, among the tiniest and most abundant hematophagous insects globally, serve as vectors for a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, protozoa, and nematodes. This study aimed to identify Culicoides species and assess their spatial distribution and seasonal occurrence in selected districts of the Central, South, and West Gondar zones, Northwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted between January to July 2023. A total of 44 UV light- onderstepoort traps were deployed in the study districts near specific areas. The traps were operational from dusk (6:00 PM) until dawn (6:00 AM) and were suspended at a height of 1.5 to 2 m above the ground. Poisson regression was used to assess associations, the Shannon diversity index to measure diversity, and QGIS 3.22.6 to create maps. In this study, 8,857 Culicoides were captured across the 44 trapping sites. Of the total flies captured flies, 8,838 were identified as belonging to 12 distinct species, while the classification of the remaining 19 flies remained unclear. Notably, C. kingi (54.01%) was the most prevalent species, followed by C. imicola (44.55%). The abundance of Culicoides observed from January to late April (3505) was significantly lower compared to the wet season (5355), with a marked increase in the capture of C. kingi (2499) from May to late July. Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth infestation is one of the major constraints to maize production in the Nigeria savannas. The application of nitrogen fertilizer to Striga-resistant hybrids may reduce Striga infection and increase grain yields. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of six maize hybrids at low (30 kg ha−1) and high (120 kg ha−1) nitrogen application under natural infestation with Striga in northern Nigeria in 2014 and 2015. The two nitrogen rates and the six hybrids were arranged in a split-plot design with three replications. The nitrogen treatment was assigned to the main plot while the maize hybrids were assigned to the subplot. Data were collected on number of emerged Striga plants, Striga damage score, total dry matter and grain yield. Results showed that the application of nitrogen at 120 kg ha−1 reduced the number of Striga plants by 58% compared to application at 30 kg N ha−1 in Kafin Madaki and by 48% in Tudun Wada. Nitrogen application at 120 kg N ha−1 also reduced Striga damage rating by 22% in Kafin Madaki and by 33% in Tudun Wada. Both the commercial hybrid (OBASUPER 1) and the susceptible hybrid (8338-1) exhibited higher Striga damage ratings compared to the new hybrids at both locations. Grain yield was 86 and 98% higher in Kafin Madaki and Tudun Wada, respectively, when N was applied at 120 kg N ha−1 than at 30 kg N ha−1. The hybrids M1124-3 and M1227-14 produced grain yields that were significantly higher than those of the other hybrids in all locations. Our results showed that the application of 120 kg N ha−1 to Striga-resistant maize hybrids will reduce Striga infection and increase grain yield.

Abstract Background: This study examines the profound personal and professional impact of the armed conflict in Sudan since April 2023 on pediatricians, particularly focusing on their displacement from Khartoum and the resultant challenges in providing essential health services to children in conflict-affected areas. Methods: Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this study targeted displaced pediatricians from Khartoum identified via purposive sampling. Data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire, featuring both quantitative items and an open-ended question for qualitative insights, administered electronically. The analysis combined descriptive statistics and thematic analysis with ethical oversight provided by the IRB of Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University. Results: In a study of 42 displaced pediatricians from Sudan, 66.67% were female and the majority were aged between 30 and 45 years. Despite facing adversities due to armed conflict, these pediatricians displayed remarkable resilience and continued to provide pediatric care under challenging conditions. Key themes emerged from their narratives, including professional commitment amid scarcity, emotional turmoil coupled with spiritual reflection, and relentless pursuit of providing care. Safety concerns primarily drove displacement, with 95.24% citing this as a reason. While 61.90% of the respondents relocated within Sudan, 38.10% moved abroad, reflecting the profound personal and professional impact of the conflict. Conclusion: The armed conflict in Sudan has severely disrupted the pediatric healthcare system, leading to widespread displacement of pediatricians and jeopardizing child healthcare. The study highlights the resilience of healthcare professionals amidst adversity, their struggle to maintain care delivery, and the critical need for support and strategic planning to restore healthcare services in conflict-affected areas.

Abstract Background Climate changes have led to health and environmental risks, so it has become essential to measure climate change literacy among the entire population, especially nursing students. The significant role of nursing students in raising public awareness and future healthcare roles emphasizes assessing the predictors of climate change literacy among nursing students. Aims This study seeks to identify the predictors of climate change literacy among nursing students in A Multi-Site Survey. Design A multi-site descriptive cross-sectional study adheres to the guidelines outlined in A Consensus-Based Checklist for Reporting Survey Studies collected for five months, from the 1st of July 2023 to November 2023. The study participants comprise 10,084 nursing students from all 27 governments in Egypt. The researcher used the Predictors of Nursing Students’ Climate Change Literacy scale in this study. Data was collected, with 25 min average time to complete. Backward multiple linear regression was used to identify these predictors. Results In the current study, nursing students demonstrated a moderate understanding of climate science (mean score 14.38), communication and advocacy skills (mean score 14.41), and knowledge of adaptation and mitigation strategies (mean score 13.33). Climate health impacts (mean score 17.72) emerged as the domain with the highest level of knowledge. No significant differences in climate literacy were observed across diverse student backgrounds (all p-values were > 0.05). Abstract Anaplasma spp. and Rickettsia spp. are intracellular vector-borne pathogens and harbored by a wide range of ticks and vertebrate hosts. Aim of this study was to molecularly characterize Anaplasma spp. and Rickettsia spp. in different ticks collected from livestock hosts in nine districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. In total, 862 ticks were collected from cattle, goats and sheep. Highest tick’s infestation was observed on cattle 56.14% (32/57), followed by goats 45.45% (40/88), and sheep 42.05% (45/107). Rhipicephalus microplus (305/862, 35.38%) was predominant species, followed by Haemaphysalis sulcata (243/862, 28.19%), Hyalomma anatolicum (133/862, 15.42%), Haemaphysalis bispinosa (120/862, 13.92%), and Hyalomma kumari (61/862, 7.07%). A subset of 135 ticks were screened for Anaplasma spp. and Rickettsia spp. based on the amplification of partial 16 S rDNA and outer-membrane protein A (ompA) fragments, respectively. In total, 16 ticks (11.85%) were positive for Anaplasma spp. and Rickettsia spp. Obtained 16 S rDNA sequences for Anaplasma spp. detected in Ha. bispinosa and Ha. sulcata showed 99.98% identity with Anaplasma bovis, while other detected in Rh. microplus showed 99.84% identity with Candidatus Anaplasma boleense. Similarly, detected ompA sequence in Ha. sulcata showed 100% identity with Rickettsia sp. and 97.93% with Rickettsia slovaca, and another sequence detected in Rh. microplus showed 100% identity with Candidatus Rickettsia shennongii. In phylogenetic trees, these sequences clustered with corresponding species from Pakistan, China, Turkey, South Korea, South Africa, and Herzegovina. This is the first study reporting detection of A. bovis in Ha. bispinosa and Ha. sulcata, Ca. A. boleense in Rh. microplus collected from goats, and R. slovaca-like in Ha. sulcata. Our results enforce the need for regular surveillance of Rickettsiales in hard ticks infesting livestock in the region.

Abstract Background Effective medication adherence is vital for managing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and enhancing patient well-being. This study aimed to evaluate medication adherence levels and associated factors among AMI patients using standardized assessment tools. Methods Employing a cross-sectional descriptive design, the study involved 210 patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. Participants completed the General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and provided socio-demographic details. Results The study revealed partial adherence to medications among AMI patients, with mean scores of 24.89 (± 3.64) out of 33. Notably, good adherence was observed in non-adherence due to patient behavior (mean ± SD = 11.8 ± 2.3 out of 15) and additional disease burden (mean ± SD = 8.65 ± 2.21 out of 12), while partial adherence was noted in non-adherence due to financial constraints (mean ± SD = 4.44 ± 1.34 out of 6). Patients reported mild anxiety (mean ± SD = 8.38 ± 2.81) and no depressive symptoms (mean ± SD = 7.43 ± 2.42). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that employed status, younger age, shorter duration of MI, lower anxiety, and depression levels were associated with higher medication adherence. However, factors such as monthly income, gender, educational level, and marital status did not predict medication adherence. Conclusion The study highlights the significance of addressing anxiety and depression levels and considering socio-demographic factors when designing interventions to enhance medication adherence among AMI patients. Further research is needed to explore additional determinants of medication adherence and develop tailored interventions to improve patient outcomes post-AMI.

The extraction methods used to obtain natural products face some problems, such as solvent toxicity, high extraction time, and low yields. Supercritical carbon dioxide fluid extraction (SFE-CO2) is an encouraging extraction system for obtaining high-yield of natural extracts. In this work, Schinus terebinthifolia fruits were extracted via SFE-CO2 using two conditions: A (static extraction) (SE) for 15 min, followed by dynamic extraction (DE) for 45 min, and B (without SE but with DE for 60 min). The extract yield was 0.205 g and 0.236 g via condition A and B, respectively. High-performance liquid chromatography assessment revealed the occurrence of several constituents with high quantities in the extract at condition B. The well diffusion test showed inhibition of 26 ± 0.1, 25 ± 0.2, 29 ± 0.1, 33 ± 0.2, 27 ± 0.1, and 8.0 ± 0.1 mm zones using the extract at condition B, while at condition A there were low inhibition zones towards Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas areginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger, correspondingly. Lipase (obesity stimulant) and butyrylcholinesterase (Alzheimer stimulant) were inhibited by the extract at condition B with IC50 quantities of 27.03 and 4.83 μg/mL, while it was 37.45 and 17.57 μg/mL, respectively at condition A.

This work aims to investigate the unsteady hydromagnetic free convective flow of a viscous, electrically incompressible fluid influenced by an inclined magnetic field, radiation, and heat source. Specifically, it explores the behavior of water-based nanofluids under these conditions. The Newton-Raphson shooting technique combines the 4th-order Runge-Kutta approach to obtain dimensionless and accurate solutions to the governing equations. The study assesses flow characteristics and heat transfer properties over various parameter values. The outcomes are visualized through graphical representations of velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient, and the local Nusselt number. The present study examines the impact of copper (Cu), silver (Ag), alumina (Al2O3), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in water as the base fluid on the percentage increase in skin friction and Nusselt number under various physical conditions. Suction increases skin friction by 10–15 % and the Nusselt number by a similar margin, whereas injection can reduce these metrics. Radiation enhances heat transfer, resulting in a 5–10 % increase in skin friction and a 10–15 % rise in the Nusselt number, with nanoparticles like Ag showing the most substantial effects due to their superior thermal properties.

ABSTRACTIntroduction Widespread use of effective and safe vaccines is the most promising method to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess the acceptance level of COVID-19 vaccination among the general population in six Middle East countries (Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, Sudan, and Yemen) as well as to assess factors associated with acceptance or refusal of vaccination.Methods A cross-sectional multinational study was conducted during the period from May 20 to August 8 2021. A web-based, self-administered, Google form Arabic questionnaire was used after a pilot study using 30 participants.Results The COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rate was 62.9%. The highest rate was reported among Tunisians (70%), while the lowest rate was detected among Egyptians (54.4%) and Yemenis (49%). Fear of side effects of vaccination was the main barrier to vaccination (53.1%). Meanwhile, nearly three-fifths (57.7%) of the respondents reported that vaccination would reduce the risk of infection. Logistic regression analysis stated that age >40 years, having children, being Health-Care Workers (HCWs), had higher education and higher income levels, and administering influenza vaccination were significant predictors of vaccine acceptance, as well as Jordanians, Palestinians, and Sudanese had higher probabilities of vaccine acceptance than Egyptians and Yemenis.Conclusions The acceptance rate was moderate. Fear of vaccine side effects and lack of receiving appropriate information were reported as barriers to vaccination. It is important to improve vaccine acceptance and reduce the barriers to COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a complex illness that impacts the respiratory system of domestic cattle, resulting in significant financial losses for the agriculture industry. Inactivated or modified live pathogen vaccines are often used as a management tool to prevent and control BRD effectively. Aim: The purpose of this study is to assess the cell-mediated immune response (CMI) induced by two commercially available polyvalent vaccines, namely the modified live (Cattle Master Gold FP) and the inactivated (CATTLEWIN-5K) vaccine. Methods: A total of 20 seronegative heifers against 4 BRD viruses, Bovine alphaherpisvirus-1 (BoAHV-1), Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV BVDV-1: Pesti virus A; BVDV-2: Pesti virus B), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and Bovine parainfluenza virus-3 (BPIV3) were chosen for this study. The heifers were divided into three groups. The first group (n=6) received no vaccination and was kept as a control. The second and third groups (7 heifers each) were vaccinated twice with either a modified live (MLV) or inactivated vaccine. The gene expression level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interferon-gamma (INF-γ) was measured using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) on the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, and 60th days post-vaccination. The results were compared with the control group to study the effectiveness of the vaccines. Results: There was an upregulation in the expression level of IL-6 and INF-γ in both MLV and inactivated vaccinated groups. The level of IL-6 mRNA expression was statistically increased from the 14th and 28th days post-vaccination in MLV and inactivated vaccine groups, respectively. The expression level of INF-γ increased significantly from the 2nd and 4th weeks post-vaccination in the MLV and inactivated vaccine groups, respectively. The mean expression level of IL-6 and INF-γ mRNAs was significantly higher in the MLV vaccine group than in the inactivated vaccine group at each examination time. Conclusion: Both investigated vaccines are efficient in stimulating CMI, particularly with the MLV vaccine showing a higher preponderance in IL-6 and INF-γ. [Open Vet J 2024; 14(8.000): 1921-1927]

Abstract Public sector digitalization and technological innovation are increasingly being recognized as key drivers of sustainable development. To maintain sustainable growth, it is imperative for economies within the European Union (EU) to adopt public digitalization and technological innovation practices to mitigate the risk of negative economic and environmental outcomes. However, the interplay between these two factors and their impact on sustainability remain underexplored. We draw insights from the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) theory to develop and test a theoretical model to assess the mediating role of technological innovation in the relationship between public digitalization and sustainability in the context of the European Union (EU). Using a panel dataset of EU countries from 2018 to 2023, this study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the direct and indirect effects of public digitalization and technological innovation on sustainability. The findings suggest that public digitalization positively and significantly influences technological innovation, which, in turn, fosters sustainability progress. Moreover, our findings confirm that technological innovation positively mediates the relationship between public digitalization and sustainability. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners seeking to harness the power of public digitalization and technological innovation to achieve sustainable development goals. This study highlights the importance of promoting technological innovation as a catalyst for public digitalization and a driver of sustainability progress in the EU.

Abstract Background Chronic heart failure affects approximately 26 million people globally. World Health Organization data show that only approximately half of chronically ill patients in developed countries adhere to recommended medication, with even lower rates in developing countries. Medication adherence is critical for managing chronic heart failure symptoms, delaying disease progression, and preventing hospitalizations. However, poor adherence increases rehospitalization, morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Objective To assess medication adherence and associated factors among chronic heart failure patients on follow-up at North Shewa Public Hospitals, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, in 2023. Methods This institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1 to April 30, 2023, G.C. A total of 603 individuals were selected consecutively among those who underwent chronic OPD after being proportionally allocated to five hospitals in the zone. Abstract Background Hyoid bone is attached to the mandible, tongue, larynx, temporal bone, and cervical spine via different types of muscles or ligaments. The tongue, mandible, and hyoid system play a crucial role in swallowing function. This within subject study aimed to evaluate the impact of mandibular implant overdentures on the displacement of the hyoid bones during the swallowing process. Methods Twenty five healthy edentulous subjects were selected for participating in the study. New complete dentures were constructed for all the participants. Subsequently two dental implants were inserted in the canine regions of the participant’s mandibular arch. In order to retain the mandibular prosthesis in place, ball attachments were incorporated into the mandibular dentures to convert them into implant overdentures. Using 10 ml of thin liquid bolus, videofluoroscopy swallowing examination was performed in three different oral conditions: without complete dentures (WCD), with complete denture (CDs), and with a mandibular implant overdenture (IODs). ANOVA with Bonferroni test was used to analyze the data in order to determine how the hyoid displacement varied throughout different oral conditions. Results Compared to complete dentures, mandibular implant overdentures showed a significant decrease (P 0.05) between the two oral circumstances in terms of superior hyoid displacement or duration for hyoid maximum elevation (DOHME). There is no penetration or aspiration for both complete denture and implant overdenture oral conditions. Conclusion Implant retained overdentures have a positive effect on hyoid displacement during swallowing of thin liquid bolus consistency relative to conventional complete dentures. Bilharziasis is a widespread trematode parasite that poses a severe public health burden. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has several pharmacological and traditional properties critical for treating several hepatic disorders. The present study was designed to assess the potential efficacy of T. officinale root (TOR) dietary supplementation with or without praziquantel (PZQ) against liver and intestinal disorders in mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni. This study was conducted on five groups; G1: uninfected control, G2: untreated S. mansoni-infected mice, G3: infected animals treated with 250 mg/kg PZQ for three alternative days, G4: infected animals were orally administered 600 mg/kg bw TOR daily for 10 days, and G5: infected animals that received both PZQ and TOR as previously described. The current findings after different treatments indicated topographical scanning electron microscopy alterations of male adult worms and a critical reduction in worm burden, ova count, granuloma diameter, hepatic and intestinal histological abnormalities, fibrosis, immunohistochemical expression of CD3+ and CD20+ cells, oxidative stress, and interleukin-10, also upregulation of interferon-gamma, and antioxidant enzymes, when compared to the infected untreated mice. The best results were obtained in mice administered PZQ+TOR together because of their antioxidant properties and ability to promote the host immune response to parasitic infection.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) represent the future of pest control, as they have the capacity to induce serious infections in insects, trigger epizootics, and effectively manage insect populations. The study aimed to identify and test indigenous EPF isolates against Tribolium confusum using soil samples from Northwestern and central Saudi Arabia. Galleria mellonella larvae were used as insect bait to collect EPF from soil samples from date palm groves, fruit groves, and maise fields. Only 27.3% of soil samples tested positive for palm grove-originating EPFs. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified the cultured fungi as Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana. Tribolium confusum pathogenicity was assessed using nine local fungal isolates. Different fungus isolates were tested for their pathogenicity on larval and adult T. confusum. The results showed that M. anisopliae MaSA-2, MaSA-3, and MaSA-4 had infection rates of 85%, 85%, and 75%, respectively, in last-instar T. confusum larvae and 5%, 10%, and 20% in adults within seven days. On the other hand, B. bassiana BbSA-4 showed a 100% infection rate in T. confusum larvae, while BbSA-5, BbSA-6, BbSA-7, BbSA-8, and BbSA-9 had infection rates of 70%, 80%, 80%, 75%, and 95%, respectively. In terms of adult mortality rates, B. bassiana BbSA-4, BbSA-5, BbSA-6, BbSA-7, BbSA-8, and BbSA-9 had rates of 25%, 35%, 35%, 20%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. The research findings show that indigenous B. bassiana and M. anisopliae fungus isolates successfully eliminated T. confusum larvae, although their effectiveness against adults was limited.

Abstract Thermal evaluation of twin wall panel systems was assessed under vibrant hot and arid conditions of weather in the Arabian Peninsula. Two systems of wall panels (0.6 m × 0.6 m) were prepared. The first system was prepared with a 5.0 cm thick extruded polystyrene (XPS) board. While the second system was prepared with 5.0 cm thick layer of foam-mortar encompassing expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads. Both the thermal insulative layers were sandwiched between two 7.5 cm thick concrete layers. The two wall panel systems were thermally evaluated at the same time in a carefully designed test room. Comparison was accomplished between the two wall systems by measuring the U-value (thermal transmittance) and R-value (resistance). The U-value (air to air) for sandwiched XPS concrete wall system was 0.837 W/m2 K while it was 2.527 W/m2 K for sandwiched EPS beads foam-mortar concrete wall system. The mean U-values (surface to surface) of the sandwiched XPS concrete wall system was 1.143 m2 K/W and 0.293 m2 K/W for sandwiched EPS beads foam-mortar concrete wall system. The sandwiched XPS concrete wall system was more efficient than the sandwiched EPS beads foam-mortar concrete wall system in terms of thermal performance. About 4.5 h of time lag was observed for both the wall panel systems between the external surface temperature and the heat transmission in the internal surface. The output of the FEM simulation by ABAQUS is compared with the measured data for Set-1 (period 16-Aug-2022 to 26-Aug-2022). The hourly temperature change on the outer and inner surfaces has good agreement for both sandwiched XPS concrete wall system and sandwiched EPS beads foam-mortar concrete wall system. The simulation can also predict the heat flux through the two wall systems investigated.

This paper examines the influence of the new 15 % Value Added Tax (VAT) enforcement on non-financial listed companies in Saudi Arabia. By comparing financial data from 2019, before the VAT implementation and the COVID-19 pandemic, with data from 2020, during both the VAT increase and the pandemic, the research aims to uncover the consequences of this tax policy change. Utilizing charts, tables, and an event study analysis approach with the Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) model, we investigated key financial indicators such as Shareholders' Equity (SE), Total Income (TI), Total Revenues (TR), Net Income (NI), Total Expenses (TE), Other Changes in Operating Activity (COA), and Cash at the End of the Period (CEP). The findings reveal significant financial impacts, highlighting companies' challenges due to the increased tax burden. Shareholders' Equity dropped from an average of 11.55 million to 4.57 million, and Total Income and Total Revenues decreased from approximately 1.73 million to 316,234 and from 1.95 million to 331,605, respectively. Net Income sharply declined from 406,109 to 74,624, and Total Expenses decreased from about 1.18 million to 223,495. Other Changes in Operating Activity shifted from a negative mean of −168,936 to a positive 523,520, and Cash at the End of the Period fell from 1.99 million to 666,663. These results suggest that the VAT increase has significantly strained companies' financial performance, emphasizing the need to consider such tax reforms carefully, particularly in developing countries. The study concludes that while the VAT increase aims to enhance government revenues, it imposes substantial financial strain on companies, potentially leading to long-term economic repercussions. Policymakers should consider these implications and implement practical measures to optimize the VAT system and support business resilience in the face of such reforms.

BackgroundIndividuals living with HIV are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. This heightened vulnerability is influenced by various factors, including the direct impact of HIV infection, the side effects of HIV medications, and a higher presence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Detecting and managing cardiovascular diseases early in HIV-infected individuals is crucial for their overall health and well-being. Electrocardiography, a simple and non-invasive test, can provide valuable information in this regard. However, there is currently no published data on the prevalence of electrocardiographic abnormalities and the associated factors among HIV-infected adults in Ethiopia.ObjectivesThis study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of ECG abnormalities and associated factors among HIV-infected adults on antiretroviral therapy.MethodologyA hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at Mettu Karl Specialized Hospital (MKSH), southwest Ethiopia, among 96 HIV-infected patients and 96 HIV-negative control groups. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select HIV-infected respondents, and HIV-negative respondents were purposively recruited from caregivers. A face-to-face interview with a semi-structured and pretested questionnaire was conducted to collect the socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics of the study participants. Electrocardiography was done for all study participants using a 12-lead electrocardiograph, interpreted by a cardiologist, and classified according to the Minnesota Code classification system. The data were entered into Epi-Data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Finally, descriptive statistics, chi-square, independent t-test, bivariable, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done at a 5% significance level.ResultsThe study found that 49% of HIV-infected and 19.8% of HIV-negative participants had at least one ECG abnormality. The proportion of coded ST-segment abnormalities, T-wave abnormalities, longer QT interval, and sinus tachycardia was significantly higher in HIV-infected respondents than in HIV-negatives. Being a smoker [AOR = 3.7, 95%CI: 1.03–13.6], being on Protease inhibitors [AOR = 3.6, 95%CI: 1.02–13.1] and having CD4 less than 350 cells/mm3 [AOR = 3.2, 95%CI: 1.22–8.49] were significantly associated with ECG abnormalities among HIV-infected respondents.ConclusionCompared to HIV-negative participants, HIV-infected patients had a significantly higher prevalence of ECG abnormalities. Screening for ECG abnormalities is needed for the early detection of cardiac abnormalities and the reduction of future complications.
