Abstract Background Orofacial neoplasms in children and young adults may differ significantly from those observed in adults. Our aim was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of histologically diagnosed orofacial neoplasms among children and young adults in Nigeria. Methods This was a multicenter cross-sectional study across geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Annual reports of clinical information and surgical biopsies submitted at the Oral Pathology Laboratory, clinic day registries, surgical day case registries and operative theatre registries were retrieved from January 2008 to March 2024. The relevant demographic data were obtained for each patient. The study subjects were categorized by age into children, adolescents and young adults. Tissue involvement was classified as soft tissue involvement, bony involvement or both soft tissue and bony involvement. The site and behaviour of the lesions were subdivided according to the ICD-10 codes. Statistical analysis was performed via the R programming language. Results A total of 1889 cases were observed during the period under review, with a mean age of 15 years. Cases were more common in females (52%) and in young adults (47%). Most cases were benign neoplasms (85%), and bony affectation (54%) was slightly predominant. Odontogenic tumours (38%) and fibro-osseous lesions (20%) were the most common category of lesions observed, whereas salivary gland tumours (2.2%) and neoplasms of epithelial origin (2.5%) were the least common. With a prospect to improve goat artificial insemination, this study aims to evaluate the effects of storage time, egg yolk concentration and semen washing on the rate of motile spermatozoa (spz) in Arbia breed bucks semen stored at 5 °C for 48 h. Semen was collected from three mature bucks using an artificial vagina during December 2018. The ejaculates used in this study (rate of motile sperm > 75 %) were divided into two fractions: A, and B, (unwashed and washed samples, respectively): themselves divided into three fractions, and diluted in Tris-Acid citric based extenders, containing egg yolk at 2 %, 10 % and 20 %. ANOVA test was performed using the R software version 3.3.0. The rate of motile spermatozoa was evaluated after 24 and 48 hours of storage in the refrigerator at 5 °C. It registered a significant decrease as a function of the storage time in the different extenders. It varied between 42.43 ± 9.86 % and 61.29 ± 5.44 %, after 24 hours of storage, and between 35.86 ± 13.95 %, and 55.45 ± 11.65 % after 48 hours of storage. The semen washing significantly reduced the rate of motile spermatozoa in the different extenders. Increasing the concentration of egg yolk in the extender increased the rate of motile spermatozoa, especially during the first 24 hours of storage. In conclusion, the rate of spermatozoa motility of unwashed semen stored at 5 °C is higher in extenders containing high egg-yolk concentration, and decrease according to conservation time.

In order to study the impact of seasonality on Zika virus dynamics, we analyzed a non-autonomous mathematical model for the Zika virus (ZIKV) transmission where we considered time-dependent parameters. We proved that the system admitted a unique bounded positive solution and a global attractor set. The basic reproduction number, $ \mathcal{R}_0 $, was defined using the next generation matrix method for the case of fixed environment and as the spectral radius of a linear integral operator for the case of seasonal environment. We proved that if $ \mathcal{R}_0 $ was smaller than the unity, then a disease-free periodic solution was globally asymptotically stable, while if $ \mathcal{R}_0 $ was greater than the unity, then the disease persisted. We validated the theoretical findings using several numerical examples.

BackgroundDrug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) impacts a significant portion, one-third, of individuals diagnosed with epilepsy. In such cases, exploring non-pharmacological interventions are crucial, with the ketogenic diet (KD) standing out as a valuable option. KD, a high-fat and low-carb dietary approach with roots dating back to the 1920s for managing DRE, triggers the formation of ketone bodies and modifies biochemistry to aid in seizure control. Recent studies have increasingly supported the efficacy of KD in addressing DRE, showcasing positive outcomes. Furthermore, while more research is needed, limited data suggests that KD May also be beneficial for specific genetic epilepsy syndromes (GESs).ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the short-term efficacy of KD among pediatric patients diagnosed with GESs.Materials and methodsThis is a multi-center retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with GESs diagnosed using next-generation sequencing. The enrolled patients followed the keto-clinic protocol, and the KD efficacy was evaluated at 3, 6, and 12-month intervals based on seizure control and compliance. The collection instrument included demographic, baseline, and prognostic data. The collected data was coded and analyzed promptly.ResultsWe enrolled a cohort of 77 patients with a mean current age of 7.94 ± 3.83 years. The mean age of seizure onset was 15.5 months. Notably, patients experienced seizures at a younger age tended to have less positive response to diet. Overall, 55 patients responded favorably to the diet (71.4%) while 22 patients (28.6%) showed no improvement. Patients with genetic etiology showed a significantly more favorable responses to the dietary intervention. Patients with Lennox–Gastaut syndrome showed the most significant improvement (14/15) followed by patients with Dravet syndrome (6/8), and West syndrome (3/4). The number of used anti-seizure medications also played a significant role in determining their response to the diet. While some patients experienced mild adverse events, the most common being constipation, these occurrences were not serious enough to necessitate discontinuation of the diet.ConclusionThe study revealed a high improvement rate in seizure control, especially among younger patients and those with later seizure onset. The success of dietary treatment hinges greatly on early intervention and the patient’s age. Certain genetic mutations responded favorably to the KD, while efficacy varied among various genetic profiles.
