1. English as a Foreign Language Teaching Approaches in Saudi K-12 Education: Teacher-Centered or Student-Centered

Abstract: This study explores the educational methodologies employed by Saudi English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher, with a specific emphasis on contrasting teacher-centered approaches and student-centered approaches. Additionally, the research examines the teachers' personal beliefs regarding the most effective approach for implementation in EFL classrooms. To gather data, an online questionnaire was administered to 42 EFL teachers across Saudi K-12 schools in the Southern part of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire comprised two sections: a demographic information segment and an inquiry into teachers' perspectives and practices. The results of the study showed a dichotomy. While a majority of participants professed that both teacher-centered and student-centered methodologies carry equal importance, a more nuanced picture emerged when examining their claimed practices versus actual classroom behavior. The majority of EFL K-12 instructors in Saudi classrooms leaned toward adopting teacher-centered approaches. These findings hold significant implications for EFL teacher training and professional development courses. This may be due to teachers' lack of confidence in implementing student-centered approaches, the traditional educational culture in Saudi Arabia, or pressure to prepare students for high-stakes exams. The study suggests that teacher education programs should focus on developing teachers' understanding and confidence in using student-centered approaches and that the Ministry of Education should create a more supportive environment for student-centered teaching approaches.

Abstract: In high-energy physics, quantum statistical correlation measurements are very important for getting a good picture of how a particle-emitting source is structured in space and time, as well as its thermodynamic properties and inner dynamics. It is necessary to take into account the various final state effects since they have the potential to alter the observed femtoscopic correlation functions. Protons are affected mostly by the strong interaction, whereas other charged particles are mostly influenced by the Coulomb interaction. The interaction of the particles under investigation with the fireball or the expanding cloud of the other particles in the final state might also have significant consequences. This may cause the particle's trajectory to shift. This phenomenon can be viewed as an Aharonov-Bohm effect since the pair's alternate tracks reveal a closed loop with an internal field. We investigate a numerical solution for a toy model to study the modifications of Bose-Einstien correlation function strength, which is sensitive to this effect

4. A Comprehensive Evaluation of Large Language Models on Mental Illnesses

Abstract: Large language models have shown promise in various domains, including healthcare. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of LLMs in the context of mental health tasks using social media data. We explore the zero-shot (ZS) and few-shot (FS) capabilities of various LLMs, including GPT-4, Llama 3, Gemini, and others, on tasks such as binary disorder detection, disorder severity evaluation, and psychiatric knowledge assessment. Our evaluation involved 33 models testing 9 main prompt templates across the tasks. Key findings revealed that models like GPT-4 and Llama 3 exhibited superior performance in binary disorder detection, with accuracies reaching up to 85% on certain datasets. Moreover, prompt engineering played a crucial role in enhancing model performance. Notably, the Mixtral 8x22b model showed an improvement of over 20%, while Gemma 7b experienced a similar boost in performance. In the task of disorder severity evaluation, we observed that FS learning significantly improved the model's accuracy, highlighting the importance of contextual examples in complex assessments. Notably, the Phi-3-mini model exhibited a substantial increase in performance, with balanced accuracy improving by over 6.80% and mean average error dropping by nearly 1.3 when moving from ZS to FS learning. In the psychiatric knowledge task, recent models generally outperformed older, larger counterparts, with the Llama 3.1 405b achieving an accuracy of 91.2%. Despite promising results, our analysis identified several challenges, including variability in performance across datasets and the need for careful prompt engineering. Furthermore, the ethical guards imposed by many LLM providers hamper the ability to accurately evaluate their performance, due to tendency to not respond to potentially sensitive queries.

5. Exploring Complex Biological Processes through Artificial Intelligence

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is now affecting all aspects of our social lives. Without always knowing it, we interact daily with intelligent systems. They serve us invisibly. At least that is the goal we assign to them: to make our lives better, task by task. Artificial intelligence has the potential to make biology education more engaging, personalized, and effective by providing students with interactive simulations, personalized learning experiences, and other tools that help them understand complex biological concepts. In this paper, we discuss the integration of AI into the virtual classroom, which significantly enhances student learning experiences in various ways. The study shows that an effective integration of technology into the virtual classroom requires a thoughtful approach that aligns with educational goals and the specific needs of students. In fact, interactive simulations can help make biology more engaging and memorable for students. Besides, personalized learning AI algorithms can help biology students receive a more tailored and effective learning experience, helping them to better understand the course material and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world. In this work, we will discuss the use of AI to enhance interactive simulation-based cellular processes, with additional application in anatomy, physiology, and ecology teaching. Moreover, this paper discusses how AI could be used to analyze student data and propose personalized learning using adaptive assessments, content recommendations, and data sciences. This paper illustrates examples of AI algorithms that could be useful for teaching biology.

6. African Academics in Norway: Experiences of Inclusion and Exclusion and Impact on Mental Wellbeing

Abstract: This study explored the experiences of inclusion and exclusion of African academics in Norway in various sectors of the society and their participation in these sectors. Using a mixed method research approach, 166 African academics completed a 20-item questionnaire entitled Perceived Exclusion Scale (PES) and two open-ended questions about their mental effects and coping mechanisms of exclusion. Descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis procedures were used to analyze the data. The results showed that the participants experienced exclusion in almost all the sectors of the Norwegian society with concomitant effects of depression and insomnia for most of the participants. Participants mentioned acceptance, confrontational strategy, avoidance strategy, theological group discussion and positive attitudes as key coping mechanisms to exclusion and discrimination. This study could be used as a baseline for future research on the psychological and mental health effects of discrimination of Africans and African-Norwegians. The study is a pointer to the public discourses on the positive sides of immigration in general and the role of migrants' contribution to the Norwegian society.

7. Artificial Intelligence in Pediatric Echocardiography: Exploring Challenges, Opportunities, and Clinical Applications with Explainable AI and Federated Learning

Abstract: Pediatric heart diseases present a broad spectrum of congenital and acquired diseases. More complex congenital malformations require a differentiated and multimodal decision-making process, usually including echocardiography as a central imaging method. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers considerable promise for clinicians by facilitating automated interpretation of pediatric echocardiography data. However, adapting AI technologies for pediatric echocardiography analysis has challenges such as limited public data availability, data privacy, and AI model transparency. Recently, researchers have focused on disruptive technologies, such as federated learning (FL) and explainable AI (XAI), to improve automatic diagnostic and decision support workflows. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the limitations and opportunities of AI in pediatric echocardiography, emphasizing the synergistic workflow and role of XAI and FL, identifying research gaps, and exploring potential future developments. Abstract: An angular analysis of the $B_s^0 \rightarrow \phi e^+e^-$ decay is performed using the proton-proton collision dataset collected between 2011 and 2018 by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and $13\,{\rm TeV}$. The analysis is performed in the very low dielectron invariant mass-squared region between $0.0009$ and $0.2615\,{\rm GeV}^2\!/c^4$. The longitudinal polarisation fraction of the $\phi$ meson is measured to be less than $11.5\%$ at $90\%$ confidence level. The $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathcal{R}e C\!P}$ observable, which is related to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, is measured to be $0.116 \pm 0.155 \pm 0.006$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The transverse asymmetries, $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathcal{I}m C\!P}$ , which are sensitive to the virtual photon polarisation, are found to be $-0.045 \pm 0.235 \pm 0.014$ and $0.002 \pm 0.247 \pm 0.016$, respectively. Abstract: The first measurement of $\phi(1020)$ meson production in fixed-target $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=68.5$ GeV is presented. 10. Advancing Software Security and Reliability in Cloud Platforms through AI-based Anomaly Detection

Abstract: Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) is fundamental for advanced software development, supporting faster and more efficient delivery of code changes into cloud environments. However, security issues in the CI/CD pipeline remain challenging, and incidents (e.g., DDoS, Bot, Log4j, etc.) are happening over the cloud environments. While plenty of literature discusses static security testing and CI/CD practices, only a few deal with network traffic pattern analysis to detect different cyberattacks. This research aims to enhance CI/CD pipeline security by implementing anomaly detection through AI (Artificial Intelligence) support. The goal is to identify unusual behaviour or variations from network traffic patterns in pipeline and cloud platforms. The system shall integrate into the workflow to continuously monitor pipeline activities and cloud infrastructure. Additionally, it aims to explore adaptive response mechanisms to mitigate the detected anomalies or security threats. This research employed two popular network traffic datasets, CSE-CIC-IDS2018 and CSE-CIC-IDS2017. We implemented a combination of Convolution Neural Network(CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to detect unusual traffic patterns. 11. UIFormer: A Unified Transformer-based Framework for Incremental Few-Shot Object Detection and Instance Segmentation

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel framework for unified incremental few-shot object detection (iFSOD) and instance segmentation (iFSIS) using the Transformer architecture. Our goal is to create an optimal solution for situations where only a few examples of novel object classes are available, with no access to training data for base or old classes, while maintaining high performance across both base and novel classes. To achieve this, We extend Mask-DINO into a two-stage incremental learning framework. Stage 1 focuses on optimizing the model using the base dataset, while Stage 2 involves fine-tuning the model on novel classes. Besides, we incorporate a classifier selection strategy that assigns appropriate classifiers to the encoder and decoder according to their distinct functions. Empirical evidence indicates that this approach effectively mitigates the over-fitting on novel classes learning. Furthermore, we implement knowledge distillation to prevent catastrophic forgetting of base classes. Comprehensive evaluations on the COCO and LVIS datasets for both iFSIS and iFSOD tasks demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We present a new annotated microscopic cellular image dataset to improve the effectiveness of machine learning methods for cellular image analysis. Cell counting is an important step in cell analysis. Typically, domain experts manually count cells in a microscopic image. Automated cell counting can potentially eliminate this tedious, time-consuming process. However, a good, labeled dataset is required for training an accurate machine learning model. Our dataset includes microscopic images of cells, and for each image, the cell count and the location of individual cells. The data were collected as part of an ongoing study investigating the potential of electrical stimulation to modulate stem cell differentiation and possible applications for neural repair. Compared to existing publicly available datasets, our dataset has more images of cells stained with more variety of antibodies (protein components of immune responses against invaders) typically used for cell analysis. The experimental results on this dataset indicate that none of the five existing models under this study are able to achieve sufficiently accurate count to replace the manual methods. 13. Heralded pure single-photon sources using nanophotonic waveguides with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities

Abstract: This paper presents, to our knowledge, a new approach in developing integrated pure heralded single-photon sources based on the interplay between the spontaneous four-wave mixing and sum-frequency generation parametric processes. We introduce a comprehensive quantum model to exploit this interplay in AlGaAs and LiNbO$_3$ nanophotonic waveguides. The developed model is used to assess the performance of the sources based on the photon-pair generation and the associated spectral purity. We find that this approach can remarkably improve the spectral purity of low-pure generated photon pairs, relaxing the restrictions on the structure design and the used pump wavelength. In addition, it overcomes the current hurdles in implementing on-chip photon detectors operating at room temperature, paving the way for advanced applications in integrated quantum photonics and information processing.

14. Decentralized Bus Voltage Restoration for DC Microgrids

Abstract: Regulating the voltage of the common DC bus, also referred to as the load bus, in DC microgrids is crucial for ensuring reliability and maintaining the nominal load voltage, which is essential for protecting sensitive loads from voltage variations. Stability and reliability are thereby enhanced, preventing malfunctions and extending the lifespan of sensitive loads (e.g., electronic devices). Voltage drops are caused by resistances of feeders connecting converters to the common DC bus, resulting in a reduced DC bus voltage compared to the nominal/desired value. Existing techniques to restore this voltage in DC microgrids are mainly centralized and rely on secondary control layers. These layers sense the common DC bus voltage, compare it to the nominal value, and utilize a PI controller to send corrections via communication links to each converter. In this paper, a local and straightforward approach to restoring the bus voltage in DC microgrids is presented, ensuring regulation in a decentralized manner. Voltage drops across resistances of feeders are compensated by an additional control loop feedback within each converter, based on the converter output current and feeder resistance. 15. Effects of confinement, impinging shock deflection angle, and Mach number on the flow field of a supersonic open cavity

Abstract: Cavities exhibit inherent self-sustaining oscillations driven by the coupling between their hydrodynamic and acoustic properties. In practical applications, cavities are often placed within confinements that introduce compression waves, significantly influencing their primary flow characteristics. The oscillations in cavities have widespread applications, such as in fuel-air mixing, heat exchangers, and landing gears However, when resonance occurs, these oscillations can lead to structural failures. Therefore, understanding cavity oscillations under diverse geometrical configurations and flow conditions is essential. The present study examines the impact of top wall confinement on an open cavity with a length-to-depth ratio (L/D) ratio of 3 at Mach 1.71, along with the effects of varying deflection angles on flow characteristics and the influence of an increased Mach number on configurations with the highest and lowest oscillation frequencies. A three-dimensional numerical investigation is carried out, employing large eddy simulations within the OpenFOAM framework. We analyze the flow fields through the spatial variation of density over time. Fast Fourier Transformation and Wavelet Transformation reveal the frequency content from unsteady pressure signals and illustrate its evolution over time under different conditions. Additionally, reduced-order modeling provides a better understanding of the relationship between frequencies and flow structures of the cavity. Results from these analyses demonstrate that top wall confinement increases oscillation frequency, while greater deflection angles introduce Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the flow field, reducing the frequency. An increase in the Mach number to 2, further intensifies instability, substantially affecting oscillations.

16. Building an Efficient Multilingual Non-Profit IR System for the Islamic Domain Leveraging Multiprocessing Design in Rust

Abstract: The widespread use of large language models (LLMs) has dramatically improved many applications of Natural Language Processing (NLP), including Information Retrieval (IR). However, domains that are not driven by commercial interest often lag behind in benefiting from AI-powered solutions. One such area is religious and heritage corpora. Alongside similar domains, Islamic literature holds significant cultural value and is regularly utilized by scholars and the general public. Navigating this extensive amount of text is challenging, and there is currently no unified resource that allows for easy searching of this data using advanced AI tools. This work focuses on the development of a multilingual non-profit IR system for the Islamic domain. This process brings a few major challenges, such as preparing multilingual domain-specific corpora when data is limited in certain languages, deploying a model on resource-constrained devices, and enabling fast search on a limited budget. By employing methods like continued pre-training for domain adaptation and language reduction to decrease model size, a lightweight multilingual retrieval model was prepared, demonstrating superior performance compared to larger models pre-trained on general domain data. Furthermore, evaluating the proposed architecture that utilizes Rust Language capabilities shows the possibility of implementing efficient semantic search in a low-resource setting.

Abstract: Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, is associated with heart failure and stroke. Accurate segmentation of the left atrium (LA) in 3D late gadolinium-enhanced (LGE) MRI is helpful for evaluating AF, as fibrotic remodeling in the LA myocardium contributes to arrhythmia and serves as a key determinant of therapeutic strategies. However, manual LA segmentation is labor-intensive and challenging. Recent foundational deep learning models, such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM), pre-trained on diverse datasets, have demonstrated promise in generic segmentation tasks. MedSAM, a fine-tuned version of SAM for medical applications, enables efficient, zero-shot segmentation without domain-specific training. Despite the potential of MedSAM model, it has not yet been evaluated for the complex task of LA segmentation in 3D LGE-MRI. This study aims to (1) evaluate the performance of MedSAM in automating LA segmentation, (2) compare the performance of the MedSAM2 model, which uses a single prompt with automated tracking, with the MedSAM1 model, which requires separate prompt for each slice, and (3) analyze the performance of MedSAM1 in terms of Dice score(i.e., segmentation accuracy) by varying the size and location of the box prompt.

18. Towards Equitable ASD Diagnostics: A Comparative Study of Machine and Deep Learning Models Using Behavioral and Facial Data

Abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often underdiagnosed in females due to gender-specific symptom differences overlooked by conventional diagnostics. This study evaluates machine learning models, particularly Random Forest and convolutional neural networks, for enhancing ASD diagnosis through structured data and facial image analysis. Random Forest achieved 100% validation accuracy across datasets, highlighting its ability to manage complex relationships and reduce false negatives, which is crucial for early intervention and addressing gender biases. In image-based analysis, MobileNet outperformed the baseline CNN, achieving 87% accuracy, though a 30% validation loss suggests possible overfitting, requiring further optimization for robustness in clinical settings. Future work will emphasize hyperparameter tuning, regularization, and transfer learning. Integrating behavioral data with facial analysis could improve diagnosis for underdiagnosed groups. These findings suggest Random Forest's high accuracy and balanced precision-recall metrics could enhance clinical workflows. MobileNet's lightweight structure also shows promise for resource-limited environments, enabling accessible ASD screening. Addressing model explainability and clinician trust will be vital.

Abstract: The dissociation of quarkonium states with different binding energies produced in heavy-ion collisions is a powerful probe for investigating the formation and properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The ratio of production cross-sections of $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$ mesons times the ratio of their branching fractions into the dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. 20. Intra-operative Optimal Flow Diverter Selection for Intracranial aneurysm treatment using Angiographic parametric imaging: Feasibility study

Abstract: During intracranial aneurysm (IA) treatment with Diverters (FDs), the device/parent artery diameters ratio may influence the ability of the device to induce aneurysm healing response. Oversized FDs are safer to deploy but may not induce enough hemodynamic resistance to ensure aneurysm occlusion. Methods based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) could allow optimal device selection but are time-consuming and inadequate for intra-operative guidance. To address this limitation, we propose to investigate a method for optimal FD selection using Angiographic Parametric Imaging (API) and machine learning (ML). We selected 128 pre-treatment angiographic sequences of IAs which demonstrated full occlusion at six months follow-up. For each IA, we extracted five API parameters from the aneurysm dome and normalized them to the feeding artery corresponding parameters. We dichotomized the dataset based on the FD/ proximal artery diameter ratio as undersized, if the ratio<1 or if multiple FDs were used and oversized otherwise. Single API parameter and ML analysis were used to determine whether API parameters could be used to determine the need for FD under-sizing (i.e., increased flow resistance). Classification accuracy was assessed using area under the receiver operator characteristic (AUROC). In total we identified 51 and 77 cases for the undersized and oversized cohorts respectively. Single API parameter analysis yielded an inadequate AUROC ~0.5 while machine learning using all five API parameters yielded and AUROC of 0.72.

21. Metastable Distributions of Semi-Markov Processes

Abstract: In this paper, we consider semi-Markov processes whose transition times and transition probabilities depend on a small parameter $\varepsilon$. Understanding the asymptotic behavior of such processes is needed in order to study the asymptotics of various randomly perturbed dynamical and stochastic systems. The long-time behavior of a semi-Markov process $X^\varepsilon_t$ depends on how the point $(1/\varepsilon, t(\varepsilon))$ approaches infinity. We introduce the notion of complete asymptotic regularity (a certain asymptotic condition on transition probabilities and transition times), originally developed for parameter-dependent Markov chains, which ensures the existence of the metastable distribution for each initial point and a given time scale $t(\varepsilon)$. The result may be viewed as a generalization of the ergodic theorem to the case of parameter-dependent semi-Markov processes.

22. BhasaAnuvaad: A Speech Translation Dataset for 13 Indian Languages

Abstract: Automatic Speech Translation (AST) datasets for Indian languages remain critically scarce, with public resources covering fewer than 10 of the 22 official languages. This scarcity has resulted in AST systems for Indian languages lagging far behind those available for high-resource languages like English. In this paper, we first evaluate the performance of widely-used AST systems on Indian languages, identifying notable performance gaps and challenges. Our findings show that while these systems perform adequately on read speech, they struggle significantly with spontaneous speech, including disfluencies like pauses and hesitations. Additionally, there is a striking absence of systems capable of accurately translating colloquial and informal language, a key aspect of everyday communication. To this end, we introduce BhasaAnuvaad, the largest publicly available dataset for AST involving 13 out of 22 scheduled Indian languages and English spanning over 44,400 hours and 17M text segments. BhasaAnuvaad contains data for English speech to Indic text, as well as Indic speech to English text. This dataset comprises three key categories: (1) Curated datasets from existing resources, (2) Large-scale web mining, and (3) Synthetic data generation. Abstract: An amplitude analysis of the $D_{s1}(2460)^+\to D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ transition is performed simultaneously in $B^{0}\to D^{-}D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, $B^{+}\to{\bar{D}}^{0} D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, and $B^{0}\to D^{*-}D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays. The study is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7,8,$ and $13\,$TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $9\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$. A clear double-peak structure is observed in the $m(\pi^{+}\pi^{-})$ spectrum of the $D_{s1}(2460)^{+}\to D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay. The data can be described either with a model including $f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ resonances, in which the contributions of $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ are unexpectedly large, or with a model including $f_0(500)$, a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state $T_{c\bar{s}}^{++}$ and its isospin partner $T_{c\bar{s}}^{0}$. If the former is considered implausible, the $T_{c\bar{s}}$ states are observed with high significance, and the data are consistent with isospin symmetry. When imposing isospin constraints between the two $T_{c\bar{s}}$ states, their mass and width are determined to be $2327\pm13\pm13\,$MeV and $96\pm16\,^{+170}_{-23}\,$MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. 25. MILU: A Multi-task Indic Language Understanding Benchmark

Abstract: Evaluating Large Language Models (LLMs) in low-resource and linguistically diverse languages remains a significant challenge in NLP, particularly for languages using non-Latin scripts like those spoken in India. Existing benchmarks predominantly focus on English, leaving substantial gaps in assessing LLM capabilities in these languages. We introduce MILU, a Multi task Indic Language Understanding Benchmark, a comprehensive evaluation benchmark designed to address this gap. MILU spans 8 domains and 42 subjects across 11 Indic languages, reflecting both general and culturally specific knowledge. With an India-centric design, incorporates material from regional and state-level examinations, covering topics such as local history, arts, festivals, and laws, alongside standard subjects like science and mathematics. We evaluate over 45 LLMs, and find that current LLMs struggle with MILU, with GPT-4o achieving the highest average accuracy at 72 percent. Open multilingual models outperform language-specific fine-tuned models, which perform only slightly better than random baselines. Models also perform better in high resource languages as compared to low resource ones. Domain-wise analysis indicates that models perform poorly in culturally relevant areas like Arts and Humanities, Law and Governance compared to general fields like STEM. To the best of our knowledge, MILU is the first of its kind benchmark focused on Indic languages, serving as a crucial step towards comprehensive cultural evaluation. All code, benchmarks, and artifacts are publicly available to foster open research.

26. Exploring Different Search Approaches to Discover Donor Molecules for Organic Solar Cells

Abstract: Identifying organic molecules with desirable properties from the extensive chemical space can be challenging, particularly when property evaluation methods are time-consuming and resource intensive. In this study, we illustrate this challenge by exploring the chemical space of large oligomers, constructed from monomeric building blocks, for potential use in organic photovoltaics (OPV). To facilitate this exploration, we developed a Python package called stk-search, which employs a building block approach. For this purpose, we developed a python package to search the chemical space using a building block approach: stk-search. We use stk-search (GitHub link) to compare a variety of search algorithms, including those based upon Bayesian optimization and evolutionary approaches. Initially, we evaluated and compared the performance of different search algorithms within a precomputed search space. We then extended our investigation to the vast chemical space of molecules formed of 6 building blocks (6-mers), comprising over $10^{14}$ molecules. Notably, while some algorithms show only marginal improvements over a random search approach in a relatively small, precomputed, search space, their performance in the larger chemical space is orders of magnitude better. Specifically, Bayesian optimization identified a thousand times more promising molecules with the desired properties compared to random search, using the same computational resources.

27. Stein Variational Newton Neural Network Ensembles

Abstract: Deep neural network ensembles are powerful tools for uncertainty quantification, which have recently been re-interpreted from a Bayesian perspective. However, current methods inadequately leverage second-order information of the loss landscape, despite the recent availability of efficient Hessian approximations. We propose a novel approximate Bayesian inference method that modifies deep ensembles to incorporate Stein Variational Newton updates. Our approach uniquely integrates scalable modern Hessian approximations, achieving faster convergence and more accurate posterior distribution approximations. Abstract: Attosecond science has leveraged the highly nonlinear interactions between intense few-cycle laser pulses and matter, allowing for unprecedented observation and control of electron motion with remarkable temporal resolution. However, most existing experiments focusing on laser-controlled attosecond dynamics have dealt with quasi-bound electrons released in the ionization continua of atoms, molecules, or conduction bands in solid-state systems. Here, we employed the recently developed attomicroscopy imaging tool to investigate, visualize, and manipulate the motion of bound electrons in graphene. By adjusting the carrier-envelope phase and the field strength of the driving electric field, we were able to control both the amplitude and direction of the field-induced electron current between carbon atoms in graphene. This research opens new avenues for understanding and controlling dynamic, on-demand electron motion processes, including chemical reactions, molecular bonding, and the electronic properties of materials.

Abstract: We introduce SinaTools, an open-source Python package for Arabic natural language processing and understanding. SinaTools is a unified package allowing people to integrate it into their system workflow, offering solutions for various tasks such as flat and nested Named Entity Recognition (NER), fully-flagged Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD), Semantic Relatedness, Synonymy Extractions and Evaluation, Lemmatization, Part-of-speech Tagging, Root Tagging, and additional helper utilities such as corpus processing, text stripping methods, and diacritic-aware word matching. This paper presents SinaTools and its benchmarking results, demonstrating that SinaTools outperforms all similar tools on the aforementioned tasks, such as Flat NER (87.33%), Nested NER (89.42%), WSD (82.63%), Semantic Relatedness (0.49 Spearman rank), Lemmatization (90.5%), POS tagging (97.5%), among others. 31. BF-IMNA: A Bit Fluid In-Memory Neural Architecture for Neural Network Acceleration

Abstract: Mixed-precision quantization works Neural Networks (NNs) are gaining traction for their efficient realization on the hardware leading to higher throughput and lower energy. In-Memory Computing (IMC) accelerator architectures are offered as alternatives to traditional architectures relying on a data-centric computational paradigm, diminishing the memory wall problem, and scoring high throughput and energy efficiency. These accelerators can support static fixed-precision but are not flexible to support mixed-precision NNs. In this paper, we present BF-IMNA, a bit fluid IMC accelerator for end-to-end Convolutional NN (CNN) inference that is capable of static and dynamic mixed-precision without any hardware reconfiguration overhead at run-time. At the heart of BF-IMNA are Associative Processors (APs), which are bit-serial word-parallel Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD)-like engines. We report the performance of end-to-end inference of ImageNet on AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet50 on BF-IMNA for different technologies (eNVM and NVM), mixed-precision configurations, and supply voltages. To demonstrate bit fluidity, we implement HAWQ-V3's per-layer mixed-precision configurations for ResNet18 on BF-IMNA using different latency budgets, and results reveal a trade-off between accuracy and Energy-Delay Product (EDP): On one hand, mixed-precision with a high latency constraint achieves the closest accuracy to fixed-precision INT8 and reports a high (worse) EDP compared to fixed-precision INT4. On the other hand, with a low latency constraint, BF-IMNA reports the closest EDP to fixed-precision INT4, with a higher degradation in accuracy compared to fixed-precision INT8. We also show that BF-IMNA with fixed-precision configuration still delivers performance that is comparable to current state-of-the-art accelerators: BF-IMNA achieves $20\%$ higher energy efficiency and $2\%$ higher throughput.

32. Provenance: A Light-weight Fact-checker for Retrieval Augmented LLM Generation Output

Abstract: We present a light-weight approach for detecting nonfactual outputs from retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Given a context and putative output, we compute a factuality score that can be thresholded to yield a binary decision to check the results of LLM-based question-answering, summarization, or other systems. Unlike factuality checkers that themselves rely on LLMs, we use compact, open-source natural language inference (NLI) models that yield a freely accessible solution with low latency and low cost at run-time, and no need for LLM fine-tuning. The approach also enables downstream mitigation and correction of hallucinations, by tracing them back to specific context chunks. 33. Modern, Efficient, and Differentiable Transport Equation Models using JAX: Applications to Population Balance Equations

Abstract: Population balance equation (PBE) models have potential to automate many engineering processes with far-reaching implications. In the pharmaceutical sector, crystallization model-based design can contribute to shortening excessive drug development timelines. Even so, two major barriers, typical of most transport equations, not just PBEs, have limited this potential. Notably, the time taken to compute a solution to these models with representative accuracy is frequently limiting. Likewise, the model construction process is often tedious and wastes valuable time, owing to the reliance on human expertise to guess constituent models from empirical data. Hybrid models promise to overcome both barriers through tight integration of neural networks with physical PBE models. Towards eliminating experimental guesswork, hybrid models facilitate determining physical relationships from data, also known as 'discovering physics'. Here, we aim to prepare for planned Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) integration through a contemporary implementation of an existing PBE algorithm, one with computational efficiency and differentiability at the forefront. To accomplish this, we utilized JAX, a cutting-edge library for accelerated computing. We showcase the speed benefits of this modern take on PBE modelling by benchmarking our solver to others we prepared using older, more widespread software. Primarily among these software tools is the ubiquitous NumPy, where we show JAX achieves up to 300x relative acceleration in PBE simulations. Our solver is also fully differentiable, which we demonstrate is the only feasible option for integrating learnable data-driven models at scale. We show that differentiability can be 40x faster for optimizing larger models than conventional approaches, which represents the key to neural network integration for physics discovery in later work.

34. A Method for Imaging the Ischemic Penumbra with MRI using IVIM

Abstract: This work examines the hypothesis that intravoxel incoherent motion MRI (IVIM) can quantify local cerebral blood flow (qCBF), infarct volume, and define the ischemic penumbra for determination of the perfusion-diffusion mismatch (PWI/DWI) volume in a setting of acute ischemic stroke. Eight experiments were conducted in a pre-clinical middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. IVIM and dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) imaging were acquired 2.5hr post-MCAO. IVIM was post-processed using software written in-house to produce parametric images of local qCBF, Water Transport Time (WTT), diffusion, and subsequently, PWI/DWI mismatch. These IVIM image parameters were compared with delay-and-dispersion-corrected local-AIF DSC perfusion image parameters including Tmax, qCBF, mean transit time (MTT), and mean diffusivity for DSC PWI/DWI mismatch. Final infarct volume was measured 4hrs post-occlusion. Early (2.5hr post-occlusion) DSC qCBF and IVIM qCBF in the diffusion negative MCA territory correlated strongly (slope=1.00, p=0.01,R2=0.69,Lins CCC=0.71), and both DSC and IVIM qCBF values negatively correlated with final infarct volume (R2=0.78,R2=0.61 respectively). The volume of hypoperfusion measured at 2.5 hours from DSC qCBF and from IVIM qCBF both predicted final infarct volume with good sensitivity and correlation (slope=2.08, R2=0.67, slope=2.50,R2=0.68 respectively). IVIM PWI/DWI ratio was correlated with infarct growth (R2=0.70) and WTT correlated with MTT (slope=0.82,R2=0.60). IVIM qCBF correlated strongly with local-AIF DSC qCBF and IVIM PWI/DWI correlated strongly with infarct growth. Abstract: Interpreting the decisions of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) is essential for understanding their behavior, yet explainability remains a significant challenge, particularly for self-supervised models. Most existing methods for generating saliency maps rely on ground truth labels, restricting their use to supervised tasks. EigenCAM is the only notable label-independent alternative, leveraging Singular Value Decomposition to generate saliency maps applicable across CNN models, but it does not fully exploit the tensorial structure of feature maps. In this work, we introduce the Tucker Saliency Map (TSM) method, which applies Tucker tensor decomposition to better capture the inherent structure of feature maps, producing more accurate singular vectors and values. These are used to generate high-fidelity saliency maps, effectively highlighting objects of interest in the input. We further extend EigenCAM and TSM into multivector variants -Multivec-EigenCAM and Multivector Tucker Saliency Maps (MTSM)- which utilize all singular vectors and values, further improving saliency map quality. Quantitative evaluations on supervised classification models demonstrate that TSM, Multivec-EigenCAM, and MTSM achieve competitive performance with label-dependent methods. Moreover, TSM enhances explainability by approximately 50% over EigenCAM for both supervised and self-supervised models. 36. Machine Learning and Seismic Attributes for Petroleum Prospect Generation and Evaluation: An Example from Offshore Australia

Abstract: The growing number of seismic and elastic attributes poses a challenge, making the full benefit from each attribute in characterizing geological formation very difficult, if not impossible. Various approaches are routinely employed to select the best attributes for specific purposes. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have demonstrated good capabilities in combining appropriate attributes to address reservoir characterization problems. This study aims to use and combine seismic and elastic attributes to detect hydrocarbon-saturated reservoirs, source rock, and seal rocks in the Poseidon field, Offshore Australia. A large number of attributes are extracted from seismic data and from impedance data. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are implemented to combine the extracted attributes and convert them into Resistivity volume, and Gamma Ray volume from which Shale probability volume, Sand volume probability volume, Effective Porosity volume, and Gas Chimney Probability Cubes. The cubes are deployed for a detailed analysis of the petroleum system in the area. The produced Shale volume and Resistivity cube helped delineate the seal rock and source rock in the area. Next, the reservoir intervals were identified using Porosity, Shale, and Resistivity volumes. A pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is trained using another carefully selected attribute set to detect subtle faults that hydrocarbons might migrated through from source rock to trap. The integration of all the extracted cubes contributed to find new prospects in the area and assess their geological probability of success. 37. Imaging the Sub-Moir\'e Potential Landscape using an Atomic Single Electron Transistor

Abstract: Electrons in solids owe their properties to the periodic potential landscapes they experience. The advent of moir\'e lattices has revolutionized our ability to engineer such landscapes on nanometer scales, leading to numerous groundbreaking discoveries. Despite this progress, direct imaging of these electrostatic potential landscapes remains elusive. In this work, we introduce the Atomic Single Electron Transistor (SET), a novel scanning probe utilizing a single atomic defect in a van der Waals (vdW) material, which serves as an ultrasensitive, high-resolution potential imaging sensor. Built upon the quantum twisting microscope (QTM) platform, this probe leverages the QTM's distinctive capability to form a pristine, scannable 2D interface between vdW heterostructures. Using the Atomic SET, we present the first direct images of the electrostatic potential in one of the most canonical moir\'e interfaces: graphene aligned to hexagonal boron nitride. Our results reveal that this potential exhibits an approximate C6 symmetry, has minimal dependence on the carrier density, and has a substantial magnitude of ~60 mV even in the absence of carriers. Theoretically, the observed symmetry can only be explained by a delicate interplay of physical mechanisms with competing symmetries. Intriguingly, the magnitude of the measured potential significantly exceeds theoretical predictions, suggesting that current understanding may be incomplete. With a spatial resolution of 1 nm and a sensitivity to detect the potential of even a few millionths of an electron charge, the Atomic SET opens the door for ultrasensitive imaging of charge order and thermodynamic properties for a range of quantum phenomena, including various symmetry-broken phases, quantum crystals, vortex charges, and fractionalized quasiparticles.

38. Trustworthiness of Stochastic Gradient Descent in Distributed Learning

Abstract: Distributed learning (DL) leverages multiple nodes to accelerate training, enabling the efficient optimization of large-scale models. Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), a key optimization algorithm, plays a central role in this process. However, communication bottlenecks often limit scalability and efficiency, leading to the increasing adoption of compressed SGD techniques to alleviate these challenges. Despite addressing communication overheads, compressed SGD introduces trustworthiness concerns, as gradient exchanges among nodes are vulnerable to attacks like gradient inversion (GradInv) and membership inference attacks (MIA). The trustworthiness of compressed SGD remains underexplored, leaving important questions about its reliability unanswered. In this paper, we provide a trustworthiness evaluation of compressed versus uncompressed SGD. Specifically, we conduct empirical studies using GradInv attacks, revealing that compressed SGD demonstrates significantly higher resistance to privacy leakage compared to uncompressed SGD. Moreover, our findings suggest that MIA may not be a reliable metric for assessing privacy risks in machine learning.

39. Improving BB84 Efficiency with Delayed Measurement via Quantum Memory

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a novel modification to the BB84 Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocol, aimed at enhancing its efficiency through the use of quantum memory and delayed measurement. In the standard BB84 protocol, the receiver immediately measures the qubits sent by the sender using randomly chosen bases. Due to mismatches between the sender and receiver's bases, a significant portion of the qubits are discarded, reducing the overall key generation rate. Our proposed protocol allows the receiver to store the received qubits in quantum memory and defer measurement until after the sender reveals her basis choices, effectively eliminating the need to discard mismatched qubits. This modification improves the key generation efficiency while maintaining the core security features of the standard BB84 protocol. By avoiding the unnecessary loss of qubits, our protocol achieves a higher secret key rate without introducing additional vulnerabilities. We present a detailed step-by-step explanation of the delayed measurement process. Although this approach does not alter the security guarantees of BB84, it represents a significant improvement in efficiency, making the protocol more viable for large-scale quantum communication networks.

40. Joint Audio-Visual Idling Vehicle Detection with Streamlined Input Dependencies

Abstract: Idling vehicle detection (IVD) can be helpful in monitoring and reducing unnecessary idling and can be integrated into real-time systems to address the resulting pollution and harmful products. The previous approach [13], a non-end-to-end model, requires extra user clicks to specify a part of the input, making system deployment more error-prone or even not feasible. In contrast, we introduce an end-to-end joint audio-visual IVD task designed to detect vehicles visually under three states: moving, idling and engine off. Unlike feature co-occurrence task such as audio-visual vehicle tracking, our IVD task addresses complementary features, where labels cannot be determined by a single modality alone. To this end, we propose AVIVD-Net, a novel network that integrates audio and visual features through a bidirectional attention mechanism. AVIVD-Net streamlines the input process by learning a joint feature space, reducing the deployment complexity of previous methods. Additionally, we introduce the AVIVD dataset, which is seven times larger than previous datasets, offering significantly more annotated samples to study the IVD problem. Our model achieves performance comparable to prior approaches, making it suitable for automated deployment. Furthermore, by evaluating AVIVDNet on the feature co-occurrence public dataset MAVD [23], we demonstrate its potential for extension to self-driving vehicle video-camera setups.

Abstract: Measurements of $CP$ observables and the CKM angle $\gamma$ are performed in $B^{\pm} \to D K^*(892)^{\pm}$ decays, where $D$ represents a superposition of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}{}^0$ states, using the LHCb dataset collected during Run 1 (2011-2012) and Run 2 (2015-2018). A comprehensive study of this channel is presented with the $D$ meson reconstructed in two-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$, $K^+K^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^-$; four-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$; and three-body final states $K^0_{S} \pi^+\pi^-$ and $K^0_{S} K^+ K^-$. This analysis includes the first observation of the suppressed $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ decays. 42. Referring Human Pose and Mask Estimation in the Wild

Abstract: We introduce Referring Human Pose and Mask Estimation (R-HPM) in the wild, where either a text or positional prompt specifies the person of interest in an image. This new task holds significant potential for human-centric applications such as assistive robotics and sports analysis. In contrast to previous works, R-HPM (i) ensures high-quality, identity-aware results corresponding to the referred person, and (ii) simultaneously predicts human pose and mask for a comprehensive representation. To achieve this, we introduce a large-scale dataset named RefHuman, which substantially extends the MS COCO dataset with additional text and positional prompt annotations. RefHuman includes over 50,000 annotated instances in the wild, each equipped with keypoint, mask, and prompt annotations. To enable prompt-conditioned estimation, we propose the first end-to-end promptable approach named UniPHD for R-HPM. UniPHD extracts multimodal representations and employs a proposed pose-centric hierarchical decoder to process (text or positional) instance queries and keypoint queries, producing results specific to the referred person. Extensive experiments demonstrate that UniPHD produces quality results based on user-friendly prompts and achieves top-tier performance on RefHuman val and MS COCO val2017. Abstract: This article aims to characterize Generative linguistics (GL) contribution to artificial intelligence (AI), alluding to the debate among linguists and AI scientists on whether linguistics belongs to humanities or science. In this article, I will try not to be biased as a linguist, studying the phenomenon from an independent scientific perspective. The article walks the researcher/reader through the scientific theorems and rationales involved in AI which belong from GL, specifically the Chomsky School. It, thus, provides good evidence from syntax, semantics, language faculty, Universal Grammar, computational system of human language, language acquisition, human brain, programming languages (e.g. Python), Large Language Models, and unbiased AI scientists that this contribution is huge, and that this contribution cannot be denied. Abstract: Dual-arm manipulation is an area of growing interest in the robotics community. Enabling robots to perform tasks that require the coordinated use of two arms, is essential for complex manipulation tasks such as handling large objects, assembling components, and performing human-like interactions. However, achieving effective dual-arm manipulation is challenging due to the need for precise coordination, dynamic adaptability, and the ability to manage interaction forces between the arms and the objects being manipulated. We propose a novel pipeline that combines the advantages of policy learning based on environment feedback and gradient-based optimization to learn controller gains required for the control outputs. This allows the robotic system to dynamically modulate its impedance in response to task demands, ensuring stability and dexterity in dual-arm operations. We evaluate our pipeline on a trajectory-tracking task involving a variety of large, complex objects with different masses and geometries. The performance is then compared to three other established methods for controlling dual-arm robots, demonstrating superior results.

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a steady progress towards blending 2D quantum materials into technology, with future applications often rooted in the electronic structure. Since crossings and inversions of electronic bands with different orbital characters determine intrinsic quantum transport properties, knowledge of the orbital character is essential. Here, we benchmark angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy (ARPES) as a tool to experimentally derive orbital characters. For this purpose we study the valence electronic structure of two technologically relevant quantum materials, graphene and WSe$_2$, and focus on circular dichroism that is believed to provide sensitivity to the orbital angular momentum. We analyze the contributions related to angular atomic photoionization profiles, interatomic interference, and multiple scattering. Regimes in which initial-state properties could be disentangled from the ARPES maps are critically discussed and the potential of using circular-dichroic ARPES as a tool to investigate the spin polarization of initial bands is explored. For the purpose of generalization, results from two additional materials, GdMn$_6$Sn$_6$ and PtTe$_2$ are presented in addition. This research demonstrates rich complexity of the underlying physics of circular-dichroic ARPES, providing new insights that will shape the interpretation of both past and future circular-dichroic ARPES studies., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

47. A Nonparametric Clustering Stopping Rule Based on Spatial Median

Abstract: In this work, we introduce a nonparametric clustering stopping rule algorithm based on the spatial median. Our proposed method aims to achieve the balance between the homogeneity within the clusters and the heterogeneity between clusters. The proposed algorithm maximises the ratio of the variation between clusters and the variation within clusters while adjusting for the number of clusters and number of observations. The proposed algorithm is robust against distributional assumptions and the presence of outliers. Simulations have been used to validate the algorithm. We further evaluated the stability and the efficacy of the proposed algorithm using three real-world datasets. Moreover, we compared the performance of our model with 13 other traditional algorithms for determining the number of clusters. We found that the proposed algorithm outperformed 11 of the algorithms considered for comparison in terms of clustering number determination. The finding demonstrates that the proposed method provides a reliable alternative to determine the number of clusters for multivariate data.

Abstract: Topological magnons give rise to possibilities for engineering novel spintronics devices with critical applications in quantum information and computation, due to its symmetry-protected robustness and low dissipation. However, to make reliable and systematic predictions about material realization of topological magnons has been a major challenge, due to the lack of neutron scattering data for most materials. In this work, we significantly advance the symmetry-based approach for identifying topological magnons through developing a fully automated algorithm, utilizing the theory of symmetry indicators, that enables a highly efficient and large-scale search for candidate materials hosting field-induced topological magnons. This progress not only streamlines the discovery process but also expands the scope of materials exploration beyond previous manual or traditional methods, offering a powerful tool for uncovering novel topological phases in magnetic systems. Performing a large-scale search over all 1649 magnetic materials in Bilbao Crystallographic Server with a commensurate magnetic order, we discover 387 candidate materials for topological magnons, significantly expanding the pool of topological magnon materials. Abstract: This paper presents the first measurement of $\psi{(2S)}$ and $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ meson production within fully reconstructed jets. Each quarkonium state (tag) is reconstructed via its decay to the $J/\psi$($\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-$)$\pi^+\pi^-$ final state in the forward region using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass-energy of $13 \text{TeV}$ in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.64 \text{fb}^{-1}$. The fragmentation function, presented as the ratio of the quarkonium-tag transverse momentum to the full jet transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{tag})/p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{jet})$), is measured differentially in $p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{jet})$ and $p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{tag})$ bins. The distributions are separated into promptly produced quarkonia from proton-proton collisions and quarkonia produced from displaced $b$-hadron decays.
