Abstract Background In the digital era, virtual education has become one of the most effective educational methods, in which, the latest educational materials can be made available to people using social network platforms. Health ambassadors are mediators for transferring health-related knowledge to the public, so, they must be aware of various health topics, such as home care for minor illnesses. This study aimed to determine the effects of social media-based interventions (using WhatsApp) on the knowledge of health ambassadors concerning home care for minor illnesses. Methods This research was an interventional study carried out in 2021 among health ambassadors in the urban and rural areas of Fasa, a city in the southeast of Fars province. In this study, 121 health ambassadors were divided into control and intervention groups. The educational content is designed based on the Encyclopedia of Self-care Guide in Minor Illnesses and was presented in text, image, and video formats via WhatsApp Messenger to the intervention group on a two-day interval for two weeks. The knowledge level was assessed using a valid and reliable questionnaire developed by researchers. Abstract Objective Effective time management is crucial for the survival of all patients, particularly those with cardiovascular conditions. This is especially true in the context of pre-hospital emergency services, where prompt intervention can significantly impact outcomes. This study delves into the timeliness of emergency services and the subsequent outcomes for hospitalized cardiovascular patients in EMS center in Fasa University of Medical Sciences, southern Iran. Results A total of 4972 emergency calls related to cardiac diagnoses were received between 2020 and 2023. The transport time was significantly correlated with age, location of the mission, and type of mission. Of the total, 86 underwent angioplasty within the standard time of less than 90 min, of which 81 were discharged and 5 died. 51 patients underwent angioplasty after more than 90 min, of which 47 were discharged and 4 died. In addition, 124 of these patients experienced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, of which 63 were successful and 61 were unsuccessful.

Abstract Background Moral courage and team work are the most important aspects of professional competence in clinical nurses; nurses with moral courage and team work are thought to be able to deliver safe nursing care to patients. The present study aimed to investigate whether moral courage and teamwork correlate with safe nursing care among clinical nurses. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional multicenter study was carried out from December 2023 to February 2024. A total of 375 nurses who were practicing in four hospitals in the south of Iran were enrolled in this study using convenience sampling. The data collection tools used consisted of a demographics survey, Moral Courage Questionnaire (MCQ), Team STEPPS Team Perception Questionnaire (T-TPQ), and the Assessment of Safe Nursing Care Questionnaire (ASNCQ). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, chi-square, multiple regression analysis, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. SPSS version 22 was used to analyze the data. Results The participants’ mean age was 32.66 ± 6.63 years, and their work experience was 8.56 ± 6.22 years. The total mean scores for moral courage, teamwork, and safe care were 422.37 ± 52.92, 144.09 ± 18.43, 315.84 ± 41.95, respectively. IntroductionHost genetic variations have been identified as potential influencers of COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to examine the association between transmembrane serine protease type 2 (TMPRSS2) rs2070788 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and the prognosis of COVID-19 in Iranian populations.MethodThis case-control study was performed on 756 COVID-19 patients and 59 healthy individuals across Iran. Clinical data, blood samples, and the presence of the TMPRSS2 rs2070788: G>A SNP were determined using T-ARMS-PCR. Additionally, serum levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-1β were evaluated in the collected blood samples.ResultsNo significant association was found between the genotypes and allele frequencies of TMPRSS2 rs2070788 SNP and susceptibility to or mortality from COVID-19 infection. However, we observed a substantial increase in IL-6 and CRP levels associated with the severity of COVID-19, while no such trend was observed for IL-1β and TNF-α. This study showed a considerable rise in TNF-α and IL-1β serum levels exclusively in COVID-19 patients with TT rs2070788 TMPRSS2 SNP genotype compared to healthy controls.ConclusionIn this study conducted across multiple cities in Iran, no significant association was found between the TMPRSS2 rs2070788 SNP genotypes and COVID-19 severity or mortality.

Background: The rising prevalence of familial multiple sclerosis (MS) in Iran has spurred interest in the potential impact of parental consanguinity on the risk of developing the disease. This study aims to aggregate current knowledge on parental consanguinity and its possible effect on MS risk, particularly among familial MS patients from various regions and ethnicities in Iran. The objective is to enhance the understanding of MS genetics and encourage further research in this field. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on clinically definite familial MS (FMS) patients registered in the nationwide MS registry of Iran (NMSRI). Data were extracted and supplemented with structured telephone follow-ups to gather detailed histories of MS in relatives and the familial relationships of the patients' parents. A family penetration score was proposed. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistical tests were used to analyze the data at a significance level of 0.05, adhering to ethical guidelines. Results: Out of 19,911 individuals registered in the NMSRI, 2307 FMS patients across 13 provinces were included in the final analysis. Among these, 385 (19.3 %) reported parental consanguinity, with 283 (14.2 %) having parents who were cousins and 102 (5.1 %) having parents who were distant relatives. The data showed no significant association between parental kinship and variables such as MS phenotype, number of affected relatives with MS, hospitalization rates, and expanded disability status scale score. Similarly, MS severity did not differ based on parental consanguinity (P-value >0.05). While the rate of consanguineous marriage was higher among patients with an onset age less than 18 years, there was no statistically significant difference in disease onset age based on parental consanguinity status. Conclusion: Our study highlights the complexity of factors influencing MS development, including genetic and environmental components. These results highlight the need for further research to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of MS etiology.

Background: Framingham risk score (FRS) and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease risk score (ASCVDrs) are widely used tools developed based on the American population. This study aimed to compare the ASCVDrs and FRS in an Iranian population. Method: The participants of the Fasa Adult Cohort Study and the patients of the cardiovascular database of Vali-Asr Hospital of Fasa, aged 40–80 years, were involved in the present cross-sectional study. After excluding non-eligible participants, the individuals with a history of myocardial infarction or admission to the cardiology ward due to heart failure were considered high-risk, and the others were considered low-risk. The discriminative ability of FRS and ASCVDrs was evaluated and compared using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The correlation and agreement of ASCVDrs and FRS were tested using Cohen Kappa and Spearman. Results: Finally, 8983 individuals (mean age:53.9 ± 9.5 y, 49.2 % male), including 1827 high-risk participants, entered the study. ASCVDrs detected a greater portion of participants as high-risk in comparison with FRS (28.7 % vs. 15.7 %). ASVD (AUC:0.794) had a higher discriminative ability than FRS (AUC:0.746), and both showed better discrimination in women. Optimal cut-off points for both ASCVDrs (4.36 %) and FRS (9.05 %) were lower than the original ones and in men. Abstract Dietary patterns strongly correlate with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is a leading cause of chronic liver disease in developed societies. In this study, we introduce a new definition, the co-consumption network (CCN), which depicts the common consumption patterns of food groups through network analysis. We then examine the relationship between dietary patterns and NAFLD by analyzing this network. We selected 1500 individuals living in Tehran, Iran, cross-sectionally. They completed a food frequency questionnaire and underwent scanning via the FibroScan for liver stiffness, using the CAP score. The food items were categorized into 40 food groups. We reconstructed the CCN using the Spearman correlation-based connection. We then created healthy and unhealthy clusters using the label propagation algorithm. Participants were assigned to two clusters using the hypergeometric distribution. Finally, we classified participants into two healthy NAFLD networks, and reconstructed the gender and disease differential CCNs. We found that the sweet food group was the hub of the proposed CCN, with the largest cliques of size 5 associated with the unhealthy cluster. Background & Objective: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic renal diseases is an important factor for physicians to select a dialysis modality. The present study aimed to compare the HRQoL in hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a sample of HD patients and a sample of age- and sex-matched PD patients with at least six months dialysis were recruited. Then, the quality of life was assessed using the Short Form Health survey (SF-36). Demographic and disease-related information was also recorded. Then, data were analyzed using the SPSS software (ver. 21). Results: Totally, 172 HD patients and 86 age- and sex-matched PD controls were entered into the study. Overall the PD patients had more dialysis per week (P < 0.001). Comparing quality of life between two groups showed significant differences in physical functioning, role-physical, role-emotional and physical component summary observed (P < 0.05). In addition, role physical in HD patients and bodily pain in PD were the worst and best dimensions of quality of life, respectively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis had a better quality of life in most measures. It seems that we need to educate and encourage patients to choose peritoneal dialysis in order to enjoy a better quality of life.

Abstract Background Changes that occur during pregnancy and after that during breastfeeding induce some symptoms similar to metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors. This study aims to determine the relationship between pregnancy, as well as the duration of breastfeeding and MetS controlling the effect of other risk factors like hypertension, glucose intolerance, triglyceride, central obesity, and reduction of high-density lipoprotein in women of Fasa Persian Cohort Study. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, 5015 women aged 35–70 years were investigated in the Sheshdeh region from 2016 to 2021, and the information related to the disease symptoms was collected through questionnaires, examinations, and laboratory tests. MetS was calculated based on two guidelines according to adult treatment panel III (ATP III) and international diabetes federation (IDF) methods. For reporting the data, the odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval was used. In order to eliminate the effect of confounders, logistic regression was used. Results Prevalence of MetS showed a descending trend in women with up to two pregnancies and it reached 22.6% and 22.4% using ATPIII and IDF methods respectively, while with an increase in the number of pregnancies of more than two, MetS prevalence was ascending. The prevalence of MetS did not have any specific trend across various breastfeeding duration groups. Multivariate analysis approved that the odds ratio of developing MetS in comparison with women who had two pregnancies was significantly increasing trend when the pregnancy counts increased. Conclusion The chance of developing MetS based on both IDF and ATP III methods after adjustment for confounding effects would grow with an increase in the number of pregnancies to more than two and breast-feeding of more than seven years. It is recommended that women with more than two pregnancies or the long duration of breast-feeding women undergo a specialized examination to investigate and control MetS problems so that future diseases could be prevented.

Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use and its associated factors among diabetic patients in Fasa, a city in southern Iran. Methods: Data were collected from diabetic patients who visited the endocrinology clinics at Fasa University of Medical Sciences. A structured questionnaire was administered to gather information on CAM use, including the types of CAM modalities used, and reasons for use. The patient's demographic and clinical characteristics, such as age, gender, duration of diabetes, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and quality of life (QoL) were also recorded. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the prevalence of CAM use, while logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors associated with CAM use. Results: A total of 376 diabetic patients participated in the study, with more than 89% reporting CAM use within the past year. Herbal preparations were the most commonly used type of CAM, with a prevalence rate of 99.4%. Factors associated with CAM use included patients’ psychological health, attitude towards the safety of CAM, belief in the synergistic effects of combining routine medications with CAM, and previous positive experiences with CAM. Conclusion: The high prevalence of CAM use highlights the importance of considering it in diabetes management and the need for healthcare professionals’ engagement in open discussions with patients about their CAM practices. Understanding the factors influencing CAM use can inform healthcare providers and policymakers in developing appropriate strategies for integrating CAM approaches into conventional diabetes care.

Background and Aims. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a worldwide pandemic, activates signaling cascades and leads to innate immune responses and secretion of multiple chemokines and cytokines. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a crucial role in inflammatory pathways. Through our search on the PubMed database, we discovered that existing research has primarily focused on examining the regulatory impacts of five lncRNAs in the context of viral infections. However, their role in regulating other conditions, including SARS-CoV-2, has not been explored. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of lncRNAs in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and their potential roles in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Potentially significant competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks of these five lncRNAs were found using online in-silico techniques. Methods. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) blood samples of the control group consisted of 45 healthy people, and a total of 53 COVID-19-infected patients in case group, with a written informed consent, was collected. PBMCs were extracted, and then, the RNA extraction and complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesis was performed. The expression of five lncRNAs (lnc ISR, lnc ATV, lnc PAAN, lnc SG20, and lnc HEAL) was assessed by real-time PCR. In order to evaluate the biomarker roles of genes, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn. Results. Twenty-four (53.3%) and 29 (54.7%) of healthy and COVID-19-infected participants were male, respectively. The most prevalent symptoms were as follows: cough, general weakness, contusion, headache, and sore throat. The results showed that three lncRNAs, including lnc ISR, lnc ATV, and lnc HEAL, were expressed dramatically higher in the case group compared to healthy controls. According to ROC curve analysis, lnc ATV has a higher AUC and is a better biomarker to differentiate COVID-19 patients from the healthy controls. Then, using bioinformatics methods, the ceRNA network of these lncRNAs enabled the identification of mRNAs and miRNAs with crucial functions in COVID-19. Conclusion. The considerable higher expression of ISR, ATV, and HEAL lncRNAs and the significant area under curve (AUC) in ROC curve demonstrate that these RNAs probably have a potential role in controlling the host innate immune responses and regulate the viral replication of SARS-CoV-2. However, these assumptions need further in vitro and in vivo investigations to be confirmed.

Abstract Background Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Even though early detection and diagnosis of this disease can reduce mortality considerably, several studies have shown that more than 92% of women are unaware of the risk factors for breast cancer and of breast cancer screening tests. The simultaneous promotion of screening and provision of education can increase community health and reduce medical costs, and students can play a leading role in informing and educating people in society. Aim The present study aims to examine the level of knowledge and attitude of female students in senior high schools in Fasa regarding breast cancer screening. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the random sampling method was applied to survey 350 female high school students, only 311 of whom completed the study. Questionnaires were completed in girls' high schools, and the data was analyzed by SPSS Software, Version 25. Results The results revealed that more than 87% of students were unaware or had incorrect information regarding breast cancer screening. The link between the type of breast cancer information sources and students' general knowledge was significant. Most students were aware of the risk of breast cancer, but they were uninformed of its symptoms, risk factors, and prevention strategies, and students with a family history of breast cancer had a higher score in terms of mammography knowledge than students with no family history of breast cancer, although this difference was not significant (mean ± standard deviation = 0.94 ± 0.90 vs. 0.67 ± 0.81, p = 0.19). Conclusion The level of awareness and attitude of Fasa high school girls regarding breast cancer and screening methods is not acceptable. Therefore, it is recommended that educational programs be implemented to increase the awareness of students in schools, so that the number of screenings increases with the institutionalization of this information. Likewise, by transferring information through students to their families, the level of awareness in the whole society will hopefully increase as well.

Abstract Background This study aimed to undertake linguistic validation and assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (IR-ADDQoL) questionnaire in Iranian patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Methods The gold-standard linguistic-validation procedure required by the developer of the ADDQoL (see https://www.healthpsychologyresearch.com ) including cross-cultural adaptation was followed. Validity and reliability of the Persian ADDQoL were then evaluated in a cross-sectional study of a sample of 153 patients with diabetes. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were applied to assess structural validity. Internal consistency reliability was assessed. Results Both forced one-factor and unforced four-factor solutions were extracted from the exploratory factor analysis that jointly accounted for 48% and 66.53% of the variance observed, respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable model fit for the Persian ADDQoL. Cronbach’s alpha showed excellent internal consistency for the questionnaire (alpha = 0.931 for the single scale). Conclusion The Persian ADDQoL (IR-ADDQoL) showed adequate structural validity and excellent internal consistency. Therefore, it could be efficiently used to evaluate the impact of diabetes on quality of life in outcome studies and research settings in Iran.

Background: Luminal A and B subtypes of breast cancer (BC) comprises up to 70% of all BC patients. LncRNAs can affect many biological and pathological processes, and dysregulation of them is related to human cancers. The potential role of lncRNA LINC00968 in luminal BC is still unclear. Materials and methods: We analyzed the LINC00968 expression across 44 paired luminal BC tissues from the TCGA-BRCA RNA sequencing dataset. Besides, we used the GEPIA2 web server and GENEVESTIGATOR software, as well. Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) assay was performed to confirm the LINC00968 expression in 71 paired luminal BC tissues and two luminal A cell lines (MCF7 and T47D). Moreover, to better understanding the potential role of LINC00968 in luminal BC, computational data analyses including co-expression analysis, functional annotation analysis, and genetic alteration analysis have been done. Results: The results of data analyses retrieved from BRCA dataset and databases revealed the significant downregulation of LINC00968 in luminal A and B BC. Also, the results of qRT-PCR in luminal BC tissues and cell lines confirmed the earlier data. LINC00968 expression was negatively associated with tumor stage and lymph node metastasis. Additionally, functional annotation analyses revealed that LINC00968 might be involved in vascular development and angiogenesis, extracellular matrix organization, and cell motility and migration. LINC00968 might play role in some cancer-related signaling pathways. Conclusion: Our study found that downregulation of LINC00968 might promote tumorigenesis, invasion, and metastasis of luminal BC.

Abstract Studies show that regularly consuming whole grains reduce the risk of obesity and a wide range of chronic diseases. Despite this, studies reveal that students are consuming fewer whole grains. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the barriers to the consumption of whole grains among Iranian students. This cross-sectional study examined students at Fasa, Iran in 2020–2021. The online questionnaires were completed by students after receiving informed consent. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26 and Chi-square, t-test, and logistic regression (P > 0.05). The current study involved 1890 students (1287 (68.1%) girls and 603 (31.9%) boys). Despite the preference for white flour bread among 53.8% of all students, 77.4% ate other whole-grain products, and 75.2% consumed all products at least once a week. Additionally, barriers such as access issues (70.5%), family supply issues (91.8%), lack appeal (72.8%), non-consumption by classmates (96.2%), and high prices in recent years (43.9%) were identified as obstacles to whole grain consumption. Abstract Background QT interval as an indicator of ventricular repolarization is a clinically important parameter on an electrocardiogram (ECG). QT prolongation predisposes individuals to different ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The current study aimed to identify the best heart rate corrected QT interval for a non-hospitalized Iranian population based on cardiovascular mortality. Methods Using Fasa PERSIAN cohort study data, this study enrolled 7071 subjects aged 35–70 years. Corrected QT intervals (QTc) were calculated by the QT interval measured by Cardiax® software from ECGs and 6 different correction formulas (Bazett, Fridericia, Dmitrienko, Framingham, Hodges, and Rautaharju). Mortality status was checked using an annual telephone-based follow-up and a minimum 3-year follow-up for each participant. Bland–Altman, QTc/RR regression, sensitivity analysis, and Cox regression were performed in IBM SPSS Statistics v23 to find the best QT. Also, for calculating the upper and lower limits of normal of different QT correction formulas, 3952 healthy subjects were selected. Results In this study, 56.4% of participants were female, and the mean age was 48.60 ± 9.35 years. Age, heart rate in females, and QT interval in males were significantly higher. The smallest slopes of QTc/RR analysis were related to Fridericia in males and Rautaharju followed by Fridericia in females. Thus, Fridericia’s formula was identified as the best mathematical formula and Bazett’s as the worst in males. In the sensitivity analysis, however, Bazett’s formula had the highest sensitivity (23.07%) among all others in cardiac mortality. Also, in the Cox regression analysis, Bazett’s formula was better than Fridericia’s and was identified as the best significant cardiac mortality predictor (Hazard ratio: 4.31, 95% CI 1.73–10.74, p value = 0.002). Conclusion Fridericia was the best correction formula based on mathematical methods. Bazett’s formula despite its poorest performance in mathematical methods, was the best one for cardiac mortality prediction. Practically, it is suggested that physicians use QTcB for a better evaluation of cardiac mortality risk. However, in population-based studies, QTcFri might be the one to be used by researchers.

Background: Connexon is a membrane structural protein in the gap junctions. These cellular connections are responsible for transporting ions and messenger molecules to the oocyte. This study aimed to investigate the role of beta-2-adrenoceptors in the process of follicle growth based on the expression of the two connexins 37/43 in the gap junctions that have a primary role in the mitotic resumption and oocyte maturation. Methods: This case-control study was conducted from April 2019 to November 2020 at the Reproductive Health Research Center of Tehran Imam Khomeini Hospital was performed on women with the poor ovarian response (POR) and control (women donate eggs) groups. Both groups had entry criteria with a body mass index under 28 m2/kg and 20-45 years old. Exit criteria were including no drug use except ovarian stimulants and no illness. The diagnosis was made agreeing to the Bologna model criterion. Ovulation stimulation cycle was performed, and then after the puncture, cumulus cells were isolated by enzyme and were freezing in -80 centigrade until the time of inserting into the cell culture medium. Isoproterenol (agonist) and propranolol (antagonist) at a concentration of 100 nM were added to the culture medium as the beta-2 adrenoceptors selective drugs. Untreated samples by medications or drugs. A total of 42 datasets were selected for additional analysis. The GEO2R identified the differentially expressed genes. The genes involved in the Wnt signaling pathway were extracted from the KEGG database. Enrichment analysis and miRNA target prediction were conducted through the ToppGene online tool. Results: In CRC datasets, there were 1168 up- and 998 down-regulated probes, whereas, in IBD datasets, there were 256 up- and 200 down-regulated probes. There were 65 upregulated and 57 downregulated genes shared by CRC and IBD. According to KEGG, there were 166 genes in the Wnt pathway. FriZZled5 (FZD5) was a down-regulated gene in both CRC and IBD, as determined by the intersection of CRC- and IBD-related DEGs with the Wnt pathway. It was also demonstrated that miR-191, miR-885-5p, miR-378a-3p, and miR-396-3p affect the FriZZled5 gene expression. Conclusion: It is possible that increased expression of miR-191 and miR-885-5p, or decreased expression of miR-378a -3p and miR396-3, in IBD and CRC results in decreased expression of the FZD5 gene. Based on the function of this gene, FZD5 may be a potential therapeutic target in IBD that progresses to CRC.

Abstract Background Luminal breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent subtype accounting for more than 70% of BC. LncRNAs, a class of non-coding RNAs with more than 200 nucleotides, are involved in a variety of cellular processes and biological functions. Abberant expression is related to the development of various cancers, such as breast cancer. LINC01133, ZEB1-AS1, and ABHD11-AS1 were reported to be dysregulated in different cancers. However, their expression level in luminal BC remains poorly known. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential roles of these lncRNAs in BC, especially in luminal subtypes. Methods A comprehensive analysis was performed using the Lnc2Cancer database to identify novel cancer-associated lncRNA candidates. After conducting a literature review, three novel lncRNAs named LINC01133, ZEB1-AS1, and ABHD11-AS1 were chosen as target genes of the present study. Quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to evaluate the expression level of the mentioned lncRNAs in both luminal BC tissues and cell lines. Then, the correlation of the three mentioned lncRNAs expression with clinicopathological characteristics of the patients was studied. Moreover, several datasets were used to discover the potential roles and functions of LINC01133, ZEB1-AS1 and ABHD11-AS1 in luminal subtype of BC. Results According to the qRT-PCR assay, the expression levels of LINC01133 and ZEB1-AS1 were decreased in luminal BC tissues and cell lines. On the other hand, ABHD11-AS1 was upregulated in the above-mentioned samples. The expression levels of LINC01133, ZEB1-AS1, and ABHD11-AS1 were not associated with any of the clinical features. Also, the results obtained from the bioinformatics analyses were consistent with qRT-PCR data. Functional annotation of the co-expressed genes with the target lncRNAs, protein–protein interactions and significantly enriched Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways across luminal BC were also obtained using bioinformatics analysis. Conclusions Taken together, our findings disclosed the dysregulation of LINC01133, ZEB1-AS1, and ABHD11-AS1 in luminal BC. It was revealed that LINC01133 and ZEB1-AS1 expression was significantly downregulated in luminal BC tissues and cell lines, while ABHD11-AS1 was upregulated considerably in the mentioned tissues and cell lines. Also, bioinformatics and systems biology analyses have helped to identify the possible role of these lncRNAs in luminal BC. However, further analysis is needed to confirm the current findings.

Background: Since the beginning of the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many countries have experienced a considerable number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. The etiology of a broad spectrum of symptoms is still debated. Host genetic variants might also significantly influence the outcome of the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the association of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE1) gene Insertion/Deletion (I/D) polymorphism (rs1799752) and ACE2 gene rs1978124 single nucleotide polymorphism with the COVID-19 severity.Methods: This study was conducted on 470 COVID-19 patients and a control group of 56 healthy individuals across several major cities in Iran. The blood sample and clinical data were collected from the participants, and their ACE1 I/D and ACE2 rs1978124 polymorphisms were determined using polymerase chain reaction and PCR-RFLP, respectively. Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and ACE1 were measured in the blood samples.Results: We found that the ACE1 DD genotype frequency was inversely correlated with the risk of intubation (p = 0.017) and mortality in COVID-19 patients (p = 0.049). Even after adjustment, logistic regression demonstrated that this significant inverse association remained constant for the above variables at odds ratios of (OR) = 0.35 and Odds Ratio = 0.49, respectively. Also, in the expired (p = 0.042) and intubated (p = 0.048) groups with II + ID genotypes, the mean level of CRP was significantly higher than in the DD genotype group. Furthermore, in both intubated and expired groups, the mean serum level of ACE1 was higher compared with non-intubated and survived groups with II or II + ID genotypes. The results also indicated that ACE2 rs1978124 TT + CT genotypes in females have a significant positive role in susceptibility to COVID-19; however, in females, the TT + CT genotypes had a protective effect (OR = 0.098) against the severity of COVID-19.Conclusion: These findings suggest that ACE1 I/D and ACE2 rs1978124 polymorphism could potentially influence the outcome of COVID-19 in the Iranian population.

Abstract Background Previous studies suggested that obesity and fat mass are associated with QT interval prolongation, but the role of different body parts' fat mass is unclear. The associations between total and regional fat mass (FM) and corrected QT interval (QTc) were investigated for the first time in this study. Methods In this sub-analysis of Fasa PERSIAN cohort Study data, 3217 subjects aged 35–70 entered our study. Body fat mass was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis and QTc interval calculated by the QT interval measured by Cardiax® software from ECGs and Bazett’s formula. Uni- and multi-variable linear and logistic regression was performed in IBM SPSS Statistics v23. Results In males, the fat mass to fat-free mass (FM/FFM) ratio in the trunk, arms, total body, and legs were significantly higher in the prolonged QTc group (QTc > 450 ms). Trunk (B = 0.148), total (B = 0.137), arms (B = 0.124), legs (B = 0.107) fat mass index (FMI) showed significant positive relationship with continuous QTc (P-value 470 ms). Also, none of the body composition variables had a significant correlation with continuous QTc. Conclusion Our study suggested that FMI ratios in the trunk, total body, arms, and legs were positively associated with QTc interval in males, respectively, from a higher to a lower beta-coefficient. Such associations were not seen in females. Our study implies that body fat mass may be an independent risk factor for higher QTc interval and, consequently, more cardiovascular events that should be investigated.

Abstract Background Luminal subtype is the most common subgroup of breast cancer (BC), accounting for more than 70% of this cancer. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a group of RNAs which play critical roles in diverse cellular processes. It is proved that dysregulation of them can contribute to the development of various cancers, including BC. LINC00961 was reported to be downregulated in several cancers, however, its expression level in BC remains largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the possible role of LINC00961 in luminal A and B subtypes of BC. Methods To obtain novel lncRNAs associated with different cancers and differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) between BC tumor and normal tissues, Lnc2Cancer and GDC databases were used, respectively. After performing literature review, the expression level of the selected lncRNA (LINC00961) was evaluated in 79 luminal A and B BC specimens and adjacent non-cancerous tissues by Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). LINC00961 expression was also evaluated in two luminal A BC cell lines, compared to a normal breast cell line. The comparison of the differences between tumor and adjacent non-tumor samples was performed by paired sample t-test. Moreover, correlation analysis between LINC00961 expression and clinicopathological features was performed using the chi-square, fisher exact, and independent t-test. In order to investigate the possible roles of LINC00961 in luminal A and B BC, different bioinformatics analyses such as functional annotation of the LINC00961 co-expressed genes and protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks construction were also performed. Results LINC00961 was selected as a significant DElncRNA which had not been studied in BC. According to q-RT PCR assay, LINC00961 was downregulated in luminal BC tissues and cell lines. Its expression was correlated with smoking status and the age of menarche in luminal BC patients. Also, the results of the bioinformatics analysis were consistent with the data obtained from q-RT PCR assay. The final results indicated that LINC00961 might be involved in multiple cancer-associated pathways such as chemokine, Ras and PI3K–Akt signaling pathways, GPCR ligand binding, and signal transduction in luminal subtypes of BC. CDH5, GNG11, GNG8, SELL, S1PR1, CCL19, FYN, ACAN, CD3E, ACVRL1, CAV1, and PPARGC1A were identified as the top hub genes of the PPI networks across luminal subgroup. Conclusion Our findings suggested that LINC00961 was significantly downregulated in luminal A and B subtypes of BC. Moreover, bioinformatics analysis provided a basis for better identification of the potential role of LINC00961 in luminal subtype of BC.

Background: Most studies show that 9 to 24% of people who are in in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles are women who respond poorly to ovarian stimulation. Women with poor ovarian response (POR) are a group of infertile patients whose ovarian reserve, ovarian response to medication, and the quality of ovum are declining. Therefore, the number of female cycles, the number of fetuses from the oocyte and the rate of pregnancy in these women is reduced. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of three adrenoceptor receptor genes in the cumulus cells of women with poor ovarian response in culture medium. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in two groups: study (POR) and control (oocyte donor's women) groups. POR diagnosis was performed by ESHRE Bologna criteria. After puncture of the follicles, cumulus-oocyte complex was collected and the cumulus cells (CCs) were isolated by enzyme and are counted with Neobar lamella and then were added in the culture medium. After completing the culture, RNA was extracted from cumulus cells and the RNA concentration was read by the Spectrophotometer (NanoDrop Technologies, Wilmington, DE, USA). Then cDNA synthesized and primers designed for ADR-α1, 2 and ADR-B2 or gene expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The research was done in Reproductive Health Research Center of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, from April to December 2017. Results: Comparison of the results of ADR-α1, 2 gene expressions in cumulus cells showed a significant decrease, but ADR-B2 was not significant in two groups. Correlation coefficients also showed that there are relationship between three adrenoceptors and their effects on each other. Conclusion: Our results showed that the decreased expressions of ADR-α1, 2 probably related to activation of the sympathetic system and release of the more neurotransmitter that lead to down-regulation of ADR-α1, 2 in the cell membrane of cumulus in culture medium.

Background & Objective: Teachers’ evaluation as an accountable process in promoting the quality of medical education is the main mission of the university. Teachers are key and effective facilitator of this process. Some of the attributes of faculty from the students’ point of view to help students to learn and make the learning process more effective. For this purpose, a study was conducted to determine the characteristics of effective faculty in improving education and its influence on students in Iran. Materials & Methods: This study was conducted through systematic review and meta-analysis. For this purpose, the articles that were published in Iran were either in English in Persian and were selected for the study without considering the time period. Articles were searched in databases of Cochrane Library Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, Ovid, Science Direct, WILEY, Scopus, ProQuest, Medline, Elsevier Magiran, and SID. Finally, 21 articles that met the criteria for meta-analysis were included in the study and their quality was evaluated. Results: Attributes were extracted in six domains. The six main dimensions are as follows: Individual and personality traits, communication skills, teaching skills, research skills, evaluation skills, and observing educational rules. Conclusion: Personal characteristics, research skills and communication skills were among the most important characteristics of an effective faculty from the students' perspective. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the characteristics in the recruitment of instructors.

Background. COVID-19, the disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has led to a global pandemic and mortality of people around the world. Some circular RNAs (circRNAs), one of the new types of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), act as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) and compete with mRNAs for shared miRNAs, to regulate gene expression. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the expression and roles of hsa_circ_0000479/hsa-miR-149-5p/RIG-I, IL-6 in COVID-19 infection. Materials and Methods. After extraction of total RNA from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of 50 patients with symptomatic COVID-19, 50 patients with nonsymptomatic COVID-19, and 50 normal controls, cDNA synthesis was performed. Online in silico tools were applied to evaluate the interaction between the genes in the hsa_circ_0000479/hsa-miR-149-5p/RIG-I, IL-6 axis, and its role in COVID-19-related pathways. Quantification of the expression of these genes and confirmation of their interaction was done using the quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) technique. Results. The expression levels of hsa_circ_0000479, RIG-I, and IL-6 were increased in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy controls, while hsa-miR-149-5p expression was decreased. Moreover, there was a significant negative correlation between hsa-miR-149-5p and hsa_circ_0000479, RIG-I, IL-6 expressions, and also a positive expression correlation between hsa_circ_0000479 and IL-6, RIG-I. Then, bioinformatics tools revealed the role of hsa_circ_0000479/hsa-miR-149-5p/RIG-I, IL-6 axis in PI3K-AKT and STAT3 signaling pathways. Conclusion. Upregulation of hsa_circ_0000479, RIG-I, and IL-6, and downregulation of hsa-miR-149-5p, along with correlation studies, indicate that hsa_circ_0000479/hsa-miR-149-5p/RIG-I, IL-6 axis could play a role in regulating the immune response against SARS-CoV-2. However, more studies are needed in this area.

Background: Air pollution is one of the major public health challenges in many parts of the world possibly has an association with breast cancer. However, the mechanism is still unclear. This study aimed to find an association between exposure to six criteria ambient air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, O3, and CO) and mammographic breast density (MBD), as one of the strongest predictors for developing breast cancer, in women living in Tehran, Iran. Methods: Participants were selected from women attending two university hospitals for screening mammography from 2019 to 2021. Breast density was rated by two expert radiologists. Individual exposures to 3-year ambient air pollution levels at the residence were estimated. Results: The final analysis in 791 eligible women showed that low and high breast density was detected in 34.8 and 62.2 of participants, respectively. Logistic regression analysis after considering all possible confounding factors represented that an increase in each unit of NO2 (ppb) exposure was associated with an increased risk of breast density with an OR equal to 1.04 (95CI: 1.01 to 1.07). Furthermore, CO level was associated with a decreasing breast density (OR = 0.40, 95CI = 0.19 to 0.86). None of the other pollutants were associated with breast density. Conclusion: Higher MBD was associated with an increased level of NO2, as a marker of traffic-related air pollution. Furthermore, CO concentration was associated with a lower MBD, while other criteria air pollutants were not related to MBD. Further studies are needed to evaluate the association between ambient air pollutants with MBD.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spread rapidly all over the world in late 2019 and caused critical illness and death in some infected patients. This study aimed at examining several laboratory factors, especially inflammatory and immunological mediators, to identify severity and mortality associated biomarkers. Ninety-three hospitalized patients with confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were classified based on disease severity. The levels of biochemical, hematological, immunological, and inflammatory mediators were assessed, and their association with severity and mortality were evaluated. Hospitalized patients were mostly men (77.4%) with an average (standard deviation) age of 59.14 (14.81) years. The mortality rate was significantly higher in critical patients (85.7%). Increased serum levels of blood sugar, urea, creatinine, uric acid, phosphorus, total bilirubin, serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, ferritin, and procalcitonin were significantly prevalent (p=0.002, p

Objective (s): The present study aimed to investigate on knowledge, attitudes and responsible environmental behaviors among female secondary school students Methods: This was a descriptive study of a sample of students in Ilam in 2016. Students were selected using cluster sampling and entered into the study at all three grades of secondary school. Data was collected by a self-designed questionnaire. The environmental status of school was also assessed by the observations. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics (including chi-square, Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression). Results: In all 330 female students were entered into the study. The mean scores were 10.3 ± 2.8, 73.6 ± 11.1 and 45.9± 14.8 for knowledge, attitude, and behavior respectively. There was a significant correlation between knowledge-attitude, and attitude-environmental behaviors. The results of regression analysis showed that attitude (P < 0.001), income (P = 0.033) and school grade (P = 0.028) were associated with environmental behavior. Conclusion: The findings indicated that attitude and students’ social class are important factors in responsible environmental behaviors.

Introduction: Premenstrual syndromes are among the disorders associated with reproductive age that includes physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral signs during the luteal phase that occurs periodically from 7 to 14 days before menstruation. These signs are not present at the begining of menstruation or during the first few days of bleeding. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of premenstrual syndromes in high school girls of Ilam during the year 2015. Materials & Methods: This descriptive-analytic study has been performed on 266 single girl- students aged from 15 to 18 years, with the average age of 16.34, considered to have regular and natural menstruation cycles (with gaps of 21 to 35 days between each two menstruations lasting for 3 to 7 days). To assess the frequency of premenstrual syndromes, the prospective questionnaires (Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool: PSST) was used for two consecutive cycles. In this research, statistical tests such as Chi-square, Variance analysis, and Logistic regression were applied to analyze the data. Findings: Based on our results, the frequency of medium or sever premenstrual syndromes was 36.84% and the frequency of premenstrual dysphoric disorder was 11.65%. According to logistic regression model, severe bleeding multiplies chances of the individuals suffering from dysphoric disorder by 5.1 times, while pain multiplies chances of the girls suffering from premenstrual syndrome about 4.1. Background and objective:Many biochemical features of sulfur mustard (SM) intoxication remained unknown. So far, the direct association between biochemical parameter changes and ocular problems in patients exposed to SM is not evaluated.The current study aimed at evaluating the associations between the ocular findings in patients with SM intoxication and the changes of serum and blood biochemical parameters. Methods:In the current study, 372 patients exposed to SM and 128 matched controls were compared concerning the association between their ocular problems and biochemical parameters. Ocular problems include photophobia, ocular surface discomfort (OSD), etc. Biochemical parameters include uric acid, creatinine (Cr), hematocrit (HCT), total, direct and indirect bilirubin, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), calcium (Ca), fasting blood sugar (FBS), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), etc. Results:The SM-exposed group with photophobia, OSD, tearing, blurred vision, abnormal tear status, and slit-lamp findings had significantly higher mean serum and blood levels of uric acid, Cr, HCT, and total and indirect bilirubin than the controls. The SM-exposed group with photophobia, tearing, ocular pain, blurred vision, bulbar conjunctival and limbal abnormalities had significantly higher mean serum and blood levels of HDL, ALT, Ca, FBS, MCHC, and HDL, indirect and total bilirubin, compared to the control group. Conclusion: The association of photophobia with uric acid, OSD and tearing with Cr, photophobia with HDL, ocular pain with Ca, and blurred vision with FBS may be explained for their known ocular effects in the SM-exposed subjects. SM-induced biochemical changes may intensify the ocular problems induced by the direct effects of SM.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common neuroendocrine-metabolic disorders at the infertile age. Patients with PCO often at risk for secondary complications including metabolic difficulties (impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus), reproductive (hirsutism, hypeandrogenism, infertility) and psychological features (worsened quality of life, anxiety, depression). Studies of the past decade suggest that the quality of life is important in the improvement of this syndrome. The purpose of this study was to provide an accurate pattern in the lifestyle of these women. Methods: This case-control study was conducted to assess the lifestyle of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome who referred to Vali-e-Asr Infertile Clinic of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, from March to February 2015. After filling the consent form, 168 women participated in this study with the age range of 20-40 years and the body mass index (BMI) less than 28 m2/kg. The dimensions of lifestyle in this study were evaluated by the following questionnaires: general qualities of life (GHQ-28), Pittsburgh sleep quality, depression-anxiety-stress (DASS-42) and researcher-made demographic questionnaire. Results: The mean of BMI and weight in study group were higher than control group (P= 0.002) (P< 0.001). Symptoms of PCOS such as irregular cycle (P< 0.001) and hirsutism (P< 0.001) in the study group were greater than the control group. Sleep problems such as drug use (P= 0.048), late sleep (P= 0.024), and sleep adequacy (P= 0.049) were also higher in the study group than control group. Conclusion: These results indicate that environmental factors can easily effect on the quality of life in PCO women. The pattern of sleep is not desirable. Menstrual disorder effects on the mood and the impact of the low income generates negative emotions and affects their quality of life, since the cost of treatment for infertility is high for the low-income families. Therefore, this study indicates that having proper weight and proper sleep can help to plan a correct pattern of lifestyle in these patients.

Introduction: Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is one of the major detoxifiers in alveoli. Polymorphism in GST genes can influence the ability of individuals to suppress oxidative stress and inflammation. The present study was aimed to explore the hypothesis that the genetic polymorphisms of GST T1, M1 and P1 are associated with the severity of the mustard lung in the sulfur mustard-exposed individuals. Methods: Blood samples were taken from 185 sulfur mustard-exposed and 57 unexposed subjects. According to the stage of the mustard lung, sulfur mustard-exposed patients were categorized in the mild/moderate and severe/very severe groups. A multiplex PCR method was conducted to identify GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes. To determine the polymorphisms of GSTP1 in exon 5 (Ile105Val) and exon 6 (Ala114Val), RFLP-PCR method was performed. Results: The frequency of GSTM1 homozygous deletion was significantly higher in the severe/very severe patients compared with the mild/moderate subjects (66.3% vs. 48%, P = 0.013). The GSTM1 null genotype was associated with the severity of mustard lung (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 2.257; 95% CI, 1.219-4.180). There was no significant association between GSTT1 and GSTP1 polymorphisms with the severity of the mustard lung. Conclusion: The different distribution of GSTM1 null genotype in severe/very severe and mild/moderate groups indicated that the severity of the mustard lung might be associated with the genetic polymorphism(s).

Background & objective: Pruritus is the most frequent chronic dermal complication of sulfur mustard (SM), which negatively influences the quality of life. Exact pathophysiology of SM-induced itching is unknown. The current study aimed at evaluating the possible association between SM-induced itching and the serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and their endogenous inhibitors, and serum levels of soluble forms of selectins (sL-, sP-, and sE-selectins) as adhesion molecules involved in the development of different inflammatory reactions. Methods: Serum levels of MMP-9, MMP-9/ tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), and selectins were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and compared between the groups (n=368) with and without itching, and matched control groups (n=126). Results: Serum levels of MMP-9 were significantly higher in the SM exposed group with itching, compared with that of the group without itching (medians: 894 and 624 pg/mL respectively; P-value =0.034). There was no relationship between the serum levels of MMP-9/TIMP-1, MMP-9/TIMP-2, MMP-9/TIMP-4, and itching in the patients exposed to SM. Median serum levels of sE- and sL-selectins in the exposed group with itching were higher than those of the exposed group without itching. These differences were statistically insignificant (P-values =0.084 and 0.095, respectively). Conclusion: According to the results of the current study, the increased serum levels of MMP-9 and selectins 20 years after exposure may play role in the pathogenesis and persistence of SM-induced itching in the exposed individuals.

Abstract Background Measuring the quality of life (QOL) is a benchmark in today’s world of medicine. The aim of the present study was to determine the general health and QOL of infertile women and certain affecting conditions. Methods In a cross-sectional study, 161 infertile women referring to Dr. Rostami’s Infertility Center of Shiraz, Southern Iran, in 2013 were enrolled by the convenience sampling method. Data were collected via a socio-demographic, general health (GHQ28), and the QOL Questionnaire of Infertile Couples and analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results According to 146 completely filled-out questionnaires, the mean age of the participants and their spouses were 29.4 ± 5.4 and 33.8 ± 5.8 years, respectively. Moreover, the general health of 57 (39%) patients was normal and that of 89 (61%) patients showed a degree of impairment. The scores for depression and physical symptoms were the highest and lowest, respectively. In addition, quite positive, positive, neutral, and negative specific QOL of infertile women were detected in 4 (2.8%), 72 (49.3%), 70 (47.9%), and 0 (0%) individuals, respectively. Background: Despite several reports on the clinical manifestations of sulfur mustard (SM) intoxication, there is no study on serum concentrations of thyroid hormones long-term after SM exposure. In this study, the changes in thyroid functioning parameters 20 yr after SM exposure were evaluated. Methods: This study is a part of a larger historical cohort study conducted in 2007 following 20 years of the exposure to SM, called Sardasht–Iran cohort study (SICS). We (SICS) comprised an SM–exposed group from Sardasht City, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran (n=169 as hospitalized group and n=203 as non-hospitalized exposed group); and control participants were selected from Rabat, a town near Sardasht (n=126). Peripheral blood samples were taken in fasting state and then the sera were separated. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common complex condition in women associated with reproductive and metabolic systems and also psychological disorders. There is considerable evidence to suggest that the sympathetic nervous system is involved in PCO and metabolic syndromes. Noradrenalin (NA), corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are the strong stimulants for two axes: hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axes which are regulators for the female reproductive system. Following previous studies on sympathetic nervous system over activity in PCOS, the main purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of CRH and NGF as two important findings from the perspective of the psycho-emotional. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in Reproductive Health Research Center of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, Iran in the September of 2011. 170 women participated in this study. The diagnosis of PCOS was made according to the joint criteria of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ESHRE/ASRM). All women have 20-40 years of age and body mass index (BMI) of less than 28. Demographic questionnaire was used in this study and blood sample was obtained from all participants before 8AM. All analysis was done in SPSS software, version 19 (IBM SPSS, Armonk, NY, USA). P-value less than 0.05 considered as significant level. Results: Serum levels of CRH and NGF in patients with polycystic ovary was significantly lower than the control group (P< 0.001). This reduction can disrupt two neural axes: the sympathetic nervous system (SAS) and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA). These axes have a fundamental role in psycho-emotional reactions in women with PCOS. Moreover, using demographic questionnaire quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the population studied, the results of which are reported in the regression model. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed previous studies. This reduction in serum levels of CRH and NGF shows the hyperactivity of sympathetic nervous system in polycystic ovary syndrome can be one of the causes of mental disorders in women with PCOS.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common complex condition. Evidences from studies on women with PCOS and rat PCO model suggest that the sympathetic regulatory drive to the ovary may be unbalanced (hyperactivity). Findings that support the involvement of sympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology of PCOS are that the catecholaminergic nerve fibers in the polycystic ovaries of women with PCOS are denser than in normal ovaries. The purpose of this study was reduction of this hyperactivity. Methods: This study was clinical trial and was performed in Reproductive Health Research Center, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran, during January 2013 to 2015. A total of 61 women between aged 20-40 years and BMI under 28 kg/m2, who were previously diagnosed with PCOS were assessed. The diagnosis of PCOS was made according to joint criteria of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ESHRE/ASRM). The study objectives were explained to the patients before they entered the study, and an informed consent was obtained from all. They were divided into three groups as follows: (i) two study group (n=39) and (ii) control group (n=22). For evaluating effects of alpha-2 inhibitors (Clonidine and Yohimbine) by Eliza, the following variables were evaluated before and after drug therapy: serum cortisol adrenaline (A) noradrenalin (NA) beta-endorphin (&beta-End) insulin as well as sex hormones including FSH, LH and Estradiol. Results: Our results showed that, Clonidine as central anti-adrenergic drug causes 61% of all pregnancies in the study group. This is high percentage of the pregnancy rate compared with yohimbine (P< 0.001). Yohimbine (Indol alkaloid) as alpha-2 adenoceptor antagonist increases follicular development in this disease. This follicle growth is higher than clonidine (P< 0.01). Conclusion: Our findings showed that increasing the pregnancy rate and follicular development represent the strategic role of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in polycystic ovary syndrome and) SNS may thus offer a novel biological and pharmacological target in treatment of PCOS.

The goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of DPP on In vitro viability and proliferation rate of neonate mouse spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Methods: cell suspension includes sertoli cells and SSCs were isolated from neonatal 6 day-old mice testes by 2 steps enzymatic digestion. The cell suspension was cultured in DMEM and FCS 4% in the absence or presence of 0.06, 0.25 and 0.62 mg/ml of aqueous extract of DPP for 2 weeks. In order to evaluate the rate of SSCs expansion at the end of culture, the mean number of whole cells and living cells were considered as proliferation and survival rates respectively. Data analysis was done with ANOVA test. The significancy of the data was analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey post test. Results: The results showed that there were no significant differences between the mean percent of viability and proliferation rate between control and 0.06, 0.25 and 0.62 mg/ml of DPP-treated groups (P> 0.05). Conclusion: Our study showed that treatment of neonatal mouse testicular cell suspension with DPP had no toxic effects on viability percent and proliferation rate of these cells. Thus, we can use DPP for evaluate the in vitro pattern of SSCs colonization in the future studies.
