Abstract

Background: Researchers have mentioned many beneficial effects for the compounds present in the toothbrush tree (Miswak) (Salvadora persica: SP); such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous-alcoholic extract of toothbrush tree on the wound healing of second-degree skin burns in BALB/c mice. Methods: In this study, 60 mature mice (8 weeks) were used. The mice were divided into 5 groups of twelve. Groups 1 and 2 were respectively treated with concentrations of 5% and 10% of aqueous-alcoholic extract of the toothbrush plant, group3 was treated with silver sulfadiazine ointment (positive control), group4 was treated with Vaseline (negative control), and group 5 (sham) received no treatment. A second-degree circular burn wound with a diameter of 1 cm was made on the back of the animal. The first to fourth groups were dressed twice a day. On days 4, 7, 10 and 14, sampling was performed from the wounded site and wound healing was evaluated histopathologically. Abstract

Tumors of the nervous system can be originated from several locations. They mostly have high mortality and morbidity rate. The emergence of resistance to chemotherapeutic agents is a hurdle in the treatment of patients. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to influence the response of glioblastoma/glioma and neuroblastoma to chemotherapeutic agents. MALAT1, NEAT1, and H19 are among lncRNAs that affect the response of glioma/glioblastoma to chemotherapy. As well as that, NORAD, SNHG7, and SNHG16 have been shown to be involved in conferring this phenotype in neuroblastoma. Prior identification of expression amounts of certain lncRNAs would help in the better design of therapeutic regimens. In the current manuscript, we summarize the impact of lncRNAs on chemoresistance in glioma/glioblastoma and neuroblastoma.

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to design and assess the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Matricaria chamomilla (MC) on preantral follicle culture of mouse ovaries in a three-dimensional culture system. Methods: Isolated preantral follicles were randomly divided into three main groups: the control group containing 10% fetal bovine serum without MC extract (G1), the first experimental group supplemented with 25 μg/ml hydroalcoholic extract of chamomile (G2), and the second experimental group supplemented with 50 μg/ml hydroalcoholic extract of chamomile (G3). Results: After 12 days of culture, the survival rate (P < 0.05), antrum formation (P < 0.01), metaphase two oocytes (P < 0.01), and the expression of PCNA (P < 0.05) and FSHR (P < 0.05) genes significantly decreased in G3 as compared with G1. On the other hand, at the last day of culture (day 12), the mean diameter of follicles cultured in the medium which was supplemented with 50 μg/ml hydroalcoholic extract of chamomile significantly decreased as compared with the G1 (P < 0.05). In addition, the levels of progesterone and dehydroepiandrosterone hormones significantly increased in the medium of G3 relative to G1 (P < 0.01), while in the medium of G1, the level of 17β-estradiol was significantly higher than that of other groups (P < 0.01). Reactive oxygen species levels of metaphase II oocytes were significantly decreased in G2 as compared with G1 (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Adding chamomile extract to culture media appeared to decrease follicular function and development.

Abstract

Notochord is an axial structure derived of embryonic mesoderm and in addition to structural supporting role in inducing nearby germinal layers, it has a basic role in formation of organs such as vertebral column, axial vessels, neural tube and primitive gut. This organ undergoes essential changes during the development process. First, arises from the primitive node and terms notochordal process, while containing a central canal. Then, transforms to notochordal plate and thereafter, changes to a cord called definitive notochord. Finally, it degenerates in centra and remains in intervertebral discs and makes its nucleus pulposus. Glycoconjugates are macromolecules containing carbohydrates that interfere in some biological phenomena such as cell proliferation, differentiation, migration and apoptosis during the development of numerous organs. The terminal sugars of carbohydrate chains are mainly responsible for these duties. These sugars are identifiable by using some polypeptides derived from plants and animals sources termed lectins. Lectins are linked exclusively to these sugars and the applied technique is called lectin histochemistry. Investigation of the developmental changes of notochord using this technique has shown that different glycoconjugates with divers terminal sugars such as N-acetylgalactoseamine (GalNac), N-acetylclucoseamine (GlcNac), galactose (Gal), fucose (Fuc), mannose (Man) and neuraminic acid (NeuAc) and also Gal-GalNac and GalGlcNac disaccharides are expressed during morphogenesis period in this organ of different animal species. Review of extensive studies carried out on development of notochord and its inductive role on nearby tissues has revealed that it is a highly glycosylated tissue and diverse glycoconjugates with different terminal sugars are expressed in it. Some of these molecules are probably involved in morphological changes of notochord while, the others are present in secreted substances from it and play key roles in its inductive effects on the nearby tissues.

Abstract

Drug abuse is considered as the most common poisoning in the world. Stimulants agent especially amphetamines and methamphetamines are among important abused substances. Different types of neurologic, psychiatric, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and cardiogenic complications have been reported to be related to methamphetamine consumption. Some of these substances could cause dysrhythmias which is the most prevalent etiology of cardiogenic syncope. Ecstasy, as one of the most commonly abused drugs, is known as a cause of cardiac dysrhythmias. Here we report a young boy who was admitted into the emergency department following three syncope attacks. All cardiac and neurologic assessments were normal; and finally ecstasy abuse was detected as the main etiology of syncopes.

Objective: The development of vertebrae is a complex phenomenon that is correlated with distinct morphological and biochemical alterations in the paraxial mesenchyme and glycoconjugates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the glycosylation pattern in paraxial mesenchyme-forming vertebrae by using the lectin histochemical technique.Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, B4G fixed paraffin sections of 9 to 15 day Balb/c mouse embryos were processed for histochemical studies using seven different HRP-labelled lectins: Glycin max (SBA), Maclura pomifera (MPA), Wistaria floribunda (WFA), Vicia villosa (VVA) which all of them are specific for N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), Ulex europius (UEA1, binds to α-L-fucose), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA, binds to sialic acid), and Griffonia simplicifolia (GSA1-B4, binds to galactose terminal sugars). The sections were observed separately by three examiners who were blinded to the lectins. 7. Lectin Histochemical Study of Vasculogenesis During Rat Pituitary Morphogenesis

Abstract

Objective(s) The aim of this study was to investigate glycoconjugates distribution patterns as well as their changes during the course of pituitary portal vasculogenesis and angiogenesis.Materials and MethodsFormalin fixed paraffin sections of 10 to 20 days of Sprague Dawly rat fetuses were processed for histochemical studies using four different horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugated lectins. Orange peel fungus (OFA), Vicica villosa (VVA), Glycine max (SBA) and Wistaria floribunda (WFA) specific for α-L-Fucose, D-Gal, α, ß-D-GalNAc and D- GalNAc terminal sugars of glycoconjugates respectively.ResultsOur finding indicated that adenohypophysal cells reacted with OFA on gestational day 10 (E10) and increased progressively to E14. Staining intensity did not change from days 14 to17, then after increased following days to E20 significantly (P< 0.05). A few cells around Rathke’s pouch reacted with VVA on E13, increased to E14 and decreased significantly afterward (P< 0.05). Reaction of some cells around Rathke’s pouch reacted with SBA on E14. This visible reaction was the same as E18 and decreased later (P< 0.05). Many cells around Rathke’s pouch reacted with WFA on E13 and increased on E 14 and E15 and decreased thereafter (P< 0.05).ConclusionReactions of OFA and other tested lectins with endothelial cells around Rathke’s pouch and developing pars distalis were different. These results suggest that embryonic origin of hypophiseal pituitary portal (HPP) system endothelial cells are not the same and our finding also indicated that glycoconjugates with terminal sugars α-L-Fucose, D-Gal, α, ß-D-GalNAc may play critical role(s) in cell interactions and tissue differentiations such as vasculogensis and angiogenesis as well as other developmental precursors in formation of the pituitary gland.

Background and Aim: Tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy are the most common ENT surgeries. Because there are not sufficient investigations about antibiotic therapy, and, also, due to .some disagreement over post-surgery use of antibiotics, the present study was designed to find out the efficacy of antibiotic therapy on consequent complications of tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy. Materials and Methods: This randomized, clinical trial (RCT) study was carried out on 138 candidates for tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy. The patients were randomly divided into two equal groups the first group, i.e. the cases, received antibiotics and the. Control group received no antibiotics. Introduction: Sleep deprivation can cause hyperalgesia and interfere with analgesic treatments. The aim of the present study was to establish an obligatory sleep-abstinence model and also evaluate the effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of crocin on pain perception in Wistar rats. Methods: In this experimental study, 35 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=7). The intra-ventricular cannulation was done for all rats before sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation was performed by placing animals on a chamber equipped with an automatic animated conveyor (5 s with an interval of 3 min) for 72 h. Subsequently, the sleep-deprived animals received ICV injection of saline (MOD), Morphine 10 µg (MOR), Crocin 10 ug (Cr10), and Crocin40 µg (Cr40) using a microsyringe. Besides, a non-sleep-deprived group was allocated as a Control Group (NC) and only received an ICV injection of saline. Fifteen minutes after the ICV injections, pain perception was evaluated by the hot plate test (54±0.4◦C). Introduction: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with a progressive nature leading to neural damage and cognitive and memory deficit. The present study investigated the neuroprotective effects of Centella asiatica (CA) in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rat model of memory impairment and neuronal damage. Methods: The intracerebroventricular infusion of STZ (3 mg/rat) or saline (as the vehicle) was performed on days 1 and 3. CA (150 and 300 mg/kg/d) was administered through oral gavage for 21 days after model induction. We used the Y-maze test to assess the working memory-related performances of animals. Rats were then sacrificed, and their hippocampi were harvested for evaluation of neuronal density in the cornu ammonis (CA1, CA2, CA3) and Dentate Gyrus (DG) regions using stereology technique. Abstract

The parotid gland is the largest salivary gland in humans, and produces mainly serous secretions. The secretion of this gland reaches the oral cavity through single parotid duct (Stensen's duct). The parotid duct begins at the anterior border of the gland, crosses the masseter, and then pierces the buccinator and open the mouth. The present study reports a rare variation of a unilateral double parotid duct that was observed in the right side of the face of a 75-year-old male cadaver during dissection. The embryological basis of this variation can be explained as follows. A sprout originates from epithelium lining the primitive oral cavity, grows dorsally, and bifurcates. The end parts of these branches invaginate into the adjacent mesenchyme separately, proliferate, and make the parotid gland, while their proximal parts later form communicating ducts (D1 and D2) connecting the gland to the mouth. Furthermore, the clinical importance of this variation was discussed.

Abstract

Introduction: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal connections between an artery and a vein whereby the interconnecting capillary network is missed. Vein of Galen is a short midline venous structure formed by the confluence of the two internal cerebral veins and the basal veins of Rosenthal and the aneurismal malformation of this vein is a congenital vascular anomaly that comprises 30% of the pediatric vascular malformations. The pathogenesis of the vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM) is unknown. Here, we report a neonate patient with complications related to vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation. Case Presentation: A 9-day-old male neonate referred with icter, poor feeding, tachypnea, and tachycardia and was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Vali-e-Asr hospital in Birjand city, Iran, on 5th July 2016. In his chest X-ray (C-X-ray), a cardiomegaly was shown. Suspecting to congenital heart disease, a transthoracic echocardiography was performed. In echocardiography, a patent foramen ovale (PFO) with the right to left shunt, small ventricular septal defect (VSD), and tiny patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) were observed, which are the signs of heart failure. The observed heart defects in echocardiography did not justify heart failure in this patient; therefore, we decided to do brain and liver sonography for rolled/out AVM. In brain sonography, an echo-free zone in midbrain with very high turbulence flow vessel was observed that confirmed A-V malformation. Conclusions: In the infancy, VGAM is usually presented with high cardiac output failure that can be associated with multiorgan dysfunction. Since the prenatal diagnosis of VGAM and its treatment will be associated with better prognosis, intrauterine detection of this anomaly and its treatment are recommended.

18. Prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschool children (2-5 year-olds) in Birjand, Iran.

Abstract

Background: Childhood overweight and obesity have increased progressively in developing countries and nowadays they are considered as a global epidemic. The aim of the present study was to determine prevalence of overweight and obesity in 2-5 year-old children in kindergartens of Birjand in 2008. Findings: This cross- sectional and descriptive- analytical study was conducted on 500 children, who were 2-5 years-old, in kindergartens of Birjand selected through census. It was found that prevalence of overweight was 10.6% (11.7% in females and 9.6% in males) and obesity 7.6% (6.3% in females and 9.6% in males). Prevalence of overweight and obesity were statistically significant regarding birth weight, mother's occupation and father's level of education. Conclusion: Prevalence of overweight and obesity in pre-schoolchildren is more than that of 7-18 year-old group in Birjand, but it is less than the result of similar studies in Tehran and most studies in other countries. Further studies are recommended to identify risk factors in obese children. Periodic studies are necessary to compare the changes in prevalence of obesity in children in future. Abstract

Sleep is a vital biological function that significantly influences overall health. While sleep deprivation (SD) and circadian rhythm disruption are known to negatively impact various organs, their specific effects on kidney function remain understudied. This study aimed to investigate the impact of chronic partial sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption on renal function in rats, providing insights into the relationship between sleep disturbances and kidney health. A total of 40 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: a control group, a group with circadian rhythm disruption (CIR), a group with sleep deprivation during the light phase (SD-AM), a group with sleep deprivation during the dark phase (SD-PM), and a group with combined sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption (SD-CIR). Sleep deprivation was induced using a specialized machine, depriving rats of sleep for 4 h daily, while circadian rhythm disruption was achieved through a 3.5-h light/dark cycle. After four weeks, kidney tissues and blood samples were collected for histological and biochemical analyses. The results showed that all experimental groups exhibited reduced water intake, with the CIR and SD-CIR groups also showing significantly lower food intake and reduced weight gain compared to controls. Oxidative stress markers revealed increased serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the SD-PM and SD-CIR groups. Despite these metabolic and oxidative changes, histological examination of the kidneys revealed no significant alterations in renal structure or function across the groups. This study highlights the negative effects of chronic partial sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption on feeding behavior, weight gain, and oxidative stress in rats. However, these interventions did not significantly alter renal structure or function. Further research is needed to explore the physiological mechanisms underlying these findings and the potential long-term effects of sleep disturbances on kidney health.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Azulene is a non-alternating hydrocarbon with various biological activities including anti-inflammatory activity. This study investigated the effects of azulene on granulation tissue formation and epithelialization in skin wound healing in mice. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, 60 adult male BALB/c mice were divided into 5 groups (n=12): experimental groups I and II were treated with 1% and 2% azulene, respectively and groups III and IV were treated with nitrofurazone and ucerin cream, respectively. Group V did not receive any treatment. After deep anesthesia, a linear wound (2 cm length) was made on dorsal thoracic skin of the mice. Then, wound samples were taken at days 4, 7, 10, and 14 after treatments and processed for histological and microscopic examinations using Hematoxiline-Eosin (H&E) and Masson Trichrome staining methods. Data analysis was done in SPSS V24 applying One-way ANOVA and Tukey test.
