Introduction: Evidence declared lipopolysaccharide (LPS) initiates inflammatory responses by stimulating the abandon of cytokines, which may perturb organ function. On the other side, it has been suggested Cedrol has potential properties, including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities. Herein, this study was done to assess the protective effect of Cedrol against LPS-associated heart damage. Methods: Thirty-five rats (200-250 g) were sorted into five groups, including control, LPS, LPS-Cedrol 7.5 mg/kg, LPS-Cedrol 15 mg/kg, and LPS-Cedrol 30 mg/kg groups. Cedrol was administrated through injected intra-peritoneally for two weeks. The heart tissues were removed and malondialdehyde (MDA) as a lipid peroxidation marker, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) as antioxidant markers were assessed. Furthermore, the interleukin (IL)-6 level in cardiac tissue was measured and Masson’s trichrome methods were employed to appraise cardiac inflammation and fibrosis, respectively. Boswellia serrata has been used in traditional medicine to treat various inflammatory diseases. Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) and incensole acetate (IA) are two active ingredients of B. serrata that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of AKBA and IA against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- induced acute kidney injury (AKI) in rats. Wistar rats were intraperitoneally pretreated with AKBA or IA for 2 weeks. After 30 min, an LPS injection was applied to induce AKI. Blood samples and kidney tissues were collected and used for biochemical assays. AKBA and IA not only significantly decreased interleukin-6 as a marker of renal inflammation but also attenuated the oxidative stress markers in kidney tissues. AKBA and IA also remarkably decreased serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. These results suggest that AKBA and IA have protective effects against AKI in rats through regulating inflammation and oxidative stress.

Background and aim: Minocycline, a tetracycline derivative, has been found to exert neuroprotective properties. The current project aimed to assess the antioxidant status and cholinergic function in the amnesia induced by scopolamine. Methods: We evaluated the passive avoidance performance, acetylcholine esterase (AChE) enzyme activity, and the oxidative stress indicators in the following groups: Normal control, scopolamine, and the treatment groups (the animals were given minocycline (10–30 mg/kg)). Results: Scopolamine (intraperitoneal) injection was associated with impairment of passive avoidance performance and neurotoxicity. Minocycline pronouncedly ameliorated scopolamine injury as presented by the increased latency time to darkness and stay time in lightness along with the decreased darkness entry. Moreover, minocycline decreased lipid peroxidation, while it elevated the levels of superoxide dismutase, AChE enzymes, and thiol groups in both the cortex and hippocampus. Conclusion: Our data suggested that minocycline modulated the antioxidant status and AChE in the brains, which may contribute to its protective effects against scopolamine-induced amnesia.

Brain tumors are the rarest cause of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. Non-traumatic cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea is also a relatively rare condition. It may be misdiagnosed as allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis and lead to unsuitable treatment. We described a 34-year-old man who came to our allergy clinic with a chief complaint of clear rhinorrhea from his left nostril with more than four years of duration. Onlyhypertrophy of left inferior concha was found in the clinical examination. His rhinorrhea aggravated when bending forward. So we were suspicious of CSF rhinorrhea. MRI was done for him and demonstrated a large tumor in the pineal region. The patient underwent surgery with resection of the mass via an infratentorial-supracerebellar approach. This case showed the role of maintaining differential diagnosis for a common complaint; rhinitis which is seen as usual.

Introduction: Themaintenance of hemodynamic stability in brain aneurysm surgery has paramount clinical significance in order to prevent vasospasm in the patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Regarding this, the present study was conducted to assess the role of magnesium sulfate in preventing vasospasm and maintaining hemodynamic stability during endovascular coiling procedure for brain aneurysm. Materials and Methods: This double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients who were candidates for undergoing endovascular coiling for brain aneurysm. The patients were subjected to angiography through femoral artery catheterization. Then, they were randomly assigned into two treatment groups of case receiving magnesium sulfate and control administered normal saline. The vasospasm and hemodynamic status were measured and recorded during and following the surgery. Results: According to the results, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of heart rate (p=0.98) and mean arterial pressure =p) 0.89( one hour post-surgery. Furthermore, there was no statistical difference between the two groups regarding the use of nimodipine ( p=0.11). Nevertheless, the frequency of vasospasm was significantly lower in the patients receiving magnesium sulfate, during surgery (p=0.037) and after surgery (p=0.02), compared to those administered normal saline. Conclusion: As the findings indicated, magnesium sulfate could lower the incidence of vasospasm during and following the endovascular coiling procedure for brain aneurysm. Moreover, it resulted in no adverse effects on the hemodynamic status of the patients.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are among the most frequent complications following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Recently, some studies have shown ginger, as an herbal medicine, to be effective and safe in PONV prevention; however, there is no evidence of its efficacy in the Iranian population. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of oral ginger on PONV prevention after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods: This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was performed on women who were undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Imam Raza Hospital, Mashhad, Iran between April and November, 2016. Patients were divided randomly into two groups of G) intervention group (n=75, received 2 capsules containing 250 mg ginger) and P) placebo group (n=75, received 2 placebo capsules) one hour before surgery. Nausea severity and vomiting frequency were evaluated at 2, 4, 6, and 12 hours after the operation. Data analysis was done by SPSS version 16.0 software with Chi-square test, Independent-sample-t-test, repeated measure ANOVA and Mann–Whitney U test. Results: The two groups were homogenous in terms of age, gender and surgery duration. The severity of nausea was lower in the ginger group at the 2, 4, 6, and 12 hours after the operation; however, these differences were statically significant only at 2 (p=0.034) and 12 hours (p=0.043). Although the incidence of vomiting was higher in the placebo group in the 2nd and 12th hours after surgery, the number of vomiting episodes in 2, 4, 6 and 12 hours after surgery was statistically similar in the two groups (p>0.05). The nausea severity was significantly changed during 12 hours of study in both groups (p=0.001), however the nausea severity was always lower in the ginger group (p=0.078). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that 500mg oral ginger one hour before surgery in women who were undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy is effective in decreasing severity of PONV.
