Background: Os peroneum and os vesalianum are sesamoid bones that could be found within fibularis longus and brevis tendons, respectively. They are rarely a cause of lateral foot pain and are often identified as incidental radiographic findings. However, in the context of trauma, these sesamoids may be radiographically misinterpreted as fractures . This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and normal morphological variants of os peroneum and os vesalianum. Materials and methods: Standard oblique lateral and/or anteroposterior radiographic views of 624 feet of adolescent and adult patients were retrospectively reviewed to determine the prevalence and anatomical variations of the os peroneum and os vesalianum.in relation to age and gender using plain radiography. Results: Os peroneum was found in 22% and os vesalianum. was found in 1.6%. Age was found to significantly correlate with the presence of os peroneum with the highest prevalence (30%) detected in the elderly group. Among 137 feet with os peroneum, 54.0% were between 4 and 8 mm, 67.2%% were close to the tubercle of cuboid, 32.8% were located at the level of calcaneocuboid joint, 81.8% were solitary, and 18.2% were bi/multipartite. Among 10 feet with os vesalianum., Type I was identified in 40% and Type II in 60%. Conclusions: Different anatomical variants of the lateral sesamoid bones of the foot have been described in this study. A thorough knowledge of normal anatomical variants is essential for proper diagnosis and management and can enhance our diagnostic skills in detecting these sesamoids.

Background Alkaptonuria is a rare genetic metabolic disorder due to deficiency of homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase (HGD), an enzyme catalyzing the conversion of homogentisate to 4-maleylacetoacetate in the pathway for the catabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine. HGD deficiency results in accumulation of homogentisic acid and its pigmented polymer. Ochronosis is a bluish-black discoloration due to the deposition of the polymer in collagenous tissues. Extensive ochronotic involvement of the Achilles tendon in alkaptonuria and its surgical treatment is rarely reported. Case report A 43-year-old man presented to our clinic in March 2019 with sudden onset of left Achilles tendon pain with no history of prior trauma. Surgical exploration revealed a complete disruption of the tendon at its attachment to the calcaneus. Black pigmentation was extensive and reached the calcaneal tuberosity, extending about 7 cm from the insertion. Discussion Achilles reconstruction was performed using flexor hallucis longus tendon transfer. The patient experienced uncomplicated healing with satisfactory functional results. Conclusion Orthopedic surgeons should be aware of the progressive nature of alkaptonuria. Extensive degenerative changes of the ruptured tendon should be suspected so that physicians can plan tendon repair and facilitate prompt surgical intervention.

Arbutus andrachne L. is a medicinal plant that grows in Jordan and has many valuable effects. In the present study, the anti-nociceptive effect of A. andrachne methanolic leaf extract was determined in mice using thermal and chemical tests. Our findings show that different doses of A. andrachne extract reduced the number of writhings significantly compared to control group. The leaf extract also reduced the time of paw licking in the early and late phases of formalin test. In all the conducted tests, 300 mg/kg body wt. was the best effective dose. A peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) antagonist reversed the action of the plant extract in the early phase of formalin test while antagonists of the PPARα, PPAR gamma (PPARγ) and cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors were responsible for abolishing its effect in the late phase of this test. Also, the extract administration increased the latency time in hot plate and tail flick, an effect that was reversed by the antagonists of PPARγ, CB1 and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). No effect was noticed for α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist in the action of A. andrachne in any of the conducted tests in this study. Furthermore, analysis of the constituents in the methanolic leaf extract using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) showed that the extract is rich in compounds that have anti-nociceptive and/or anti-inflammatory effects such as arbutin, rutin, linalool, linoleic acid, gallic acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, hydroquinone, β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, isoquercetin, quercetin, (+)-gallocatechin, kaempferol, α-tocopherol, myricetin 3-O-rhamnoside and catechin gallate. In conclusion, A. andrachne showed promising anti-nociceptive effects in thermal and chemical models of pain. These findings can open an avenue for natural pain relief.

Background: Tramadol is a widely used analgesic that activates mu-opioid receptors (MOR) and inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine transporters. This mixed pharmacology may limit both its own abuse potential and its modulation of abuse potential of other MOR agonists. Aims: This study used an intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) procedure to compare abuse-related effects produced by acute or repeated treatment with tramadol or morphine in rats. Abuse potential in ICSS procedures is indicated by a drug-induced increase (or ‘facilitation’) of ICSS responding. Methods: Adult male Sprague–Dawley rats were implanted with electrodes targeting the medial forebrain bundle and trained to respond on a lever for pulses of electrical brain stimulation. Tramadol effects were evaluated after acute administration (3.2–32 mg/kg) in the absence or presence of the opioid antagonist naltrexone, the CYP2D6 hepatic-enzyme inhibitor quinine or a combination of both. Additionally, both tramadol and morphine were also tested before and after repeated tramadol (32 mg/kg/day for six days) or repeated morphine (3.2 mg/kg/day for six days). Results: Acute tramadol produced primarily ICSS rate-decreasing effects that were antagonised by naltrexone but not by quinine or naltrexone + quinine. Tramadol also produced little or no ICSS facilitation after repeated tramadol or repeated morphine, and repeated tramadol did not enhance ICSS facilitation by morphine. By contrast, morphine-induced ICSS facilitation was enhanced by repeated morphine treatment. Conclusions: These results suggest that tramadol has lower abuse potential than other abused MOR agonists and that repeated tramadol exposure produces relatively little enhancement of abuse potential of other MOR agonists.

Dental caries is the most prevalent disease in primary, mixed, and permanent dentition. Many preventive and treatment strategies were used in the last decades. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a promising nontoxic material which proves to be a turning point concerning conservative dentistry if the patient and dental practitioners are adequately educated regarding it. Several advantages have been reported related to the use of SDF, including the procedure being pain-free and drill-free, patient- and doctor-friendly caries control strategy, and management of dentinal hypersensitivity.

Os trigonum syndrome is a rare condition, often affecting athletes. A paucity of data exists on the incidence of os trigonum syndrome in nonathletic population. The study aimed to determine the incidence and clinical characteristics of os trigonum syndrome in nonathletic patients with sprained ankles. The sample consisted of 798 adolescent and adult patients that attended the emergency department or Foot and Ankle Clinic with acute ankle sprain. Lateral and/or oblique lateral radiographs of the feet were screened for the presence of os trigonum in relation to age and gender. A cohort of 163 patients with os trigonum was followed up prospectively over a 48-month period to correlate the presence of the os trigonum with patient symptomatology. Os trigonum was found in 20.4% (163/798) of sprained ankles. Patients aged 18–35 exhibited most os trigonum [42.3% (69/163)], with higher incidence in females. 5.5% (9/163) of the os trigonum patients developed an os trigonum syndrome after a standard treatment of an ankle sprain [3.8% (3/78) of males and 7.1% (6/85) of females]. Females aged between 18 and 35 years had higher incidence of os trigonum syndrome compared to males of a similar age. Os trigonum syndrome should be suspected in nonathletic patients with an ankle sprain unresponsive to standard treatment. About 1.1% of acute ankle sprain patients develop an os trigonum syndrome. This finding can help identify the source of a patient’s symptoms, leading to an accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and reducing the potential chronic symptoms.

Ajuga chamaepitys is a small herbaceous annual or biannual plant that belongs to Lamiaceae family. It grows in Europe and Eastern parts of the Mediterranean. One of the ethno-pharmacological uses of this plant is its use as a painkiller. In the present experimental work, the antinociceptive effect of the methanolic extract of A. chamaepitys collected from Jordan was investigated using chemical and thermal models of pain in mice. A. chamaepitys extract decreased significantly the number of writhes that were induced in mice by the injection of 1% acetic acid compared to negative control group. The inhibitory effect produced by 300 mg/kg of the extract given i.p was comparable to that of 300 mg/kg aspirin. The i.p administration of 450 mg/kg A. chamaepitys caused a remarkable decrease in paw licking time during the early and late phases of formalin test. Furthermore, the latency time increased in hot plate test but not in tail flick test in animals that were treated i.p with 300 mg/kg A. chamaepitys extract compared to control animals. The involvement of opioid receptor was proven in formalin and hot-plate tests by abolishing the effect of A. chamaepitys extract by pretreatment with naloxone, an opioid antagonist. LC-MS analysis resulted in the identification of 19 compounds. Isovitexin, orientin, flavonol, and cyanidin were the major compounds. Our results suggest that the methanolic extract of A. chamaepitys has pronounced antinociceptive effects, which provide the scientific basis of the traditional therapeutic use of A. chamaepitys in folk medicine.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by cartilage degeneration, subchondral sclerosis, and pain. Cannabinoids have well-established anti-nociceptive properties in animal models of chronic pain. The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-nociceptive effects of synthetic cannabinoids (WIN-55,212 and HU210) and the cannabinoid-like compound palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) in rat models of OA and to assess the role of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) in mediating these effects. Intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) in the knee joint was used as a model of osteoarthritis. The von Frey filament test and weight-bearing difference were used to assess the anti-nociceptive effects of WIN-55,212, HU210, and PEA on MIA-induced OA in rats. Open-field locomotor activity system was used confirm the analgesic effects of those compounds. HU210, WIN55, 212, and PEA in a dose-dependent manner restored the paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) and the weight-bearing difference induced by MIA injection. SR141716A (a CB1 antagonist) significantly reversed the anti-nociceptive effects of all the administered drugs in terms of PWT. However, in terms of weight-bearing difference, SR141716A significantly reduced the anti-nociceptive effect of HU210 but not PEA or WIN55, 212. GW6471 (a PPARα antagonist) significantly reversed the anti-nociceptive effects of PEA but not those of HU210 or WIN55, 212. HU210, WIN55, 212 and PEA significantly restored the MIA-induced reduction in locomotor activity. In conclusions, both CB1 and PPARα receptors are involved in mediating pain in osteoarthritis. Therefore, targeting these receptors may be of great clinical value.

A total of 1478 ankle CT scans was retrospectively reviewed for the different anatomical variants of the posterolateral tubercle of talus, the type and size of os trigonum. Normal sized lateral tubercle was found in 46.1 %, an enlarged posterolateral tubercle (Stieda’s process) in 26.1 %, os trigonum in 20.5 % and almost absent tubercle in 7.3 %. A statistically higher prevalence of Stieda’s process was found in males while os trigonum was higher in females (p0.05). The posterolateral tubercle of talus and its accessory ossicle, the os trigonum, could vary morphologically. The data of this study could be helpful in understanding the clinical problems that could be associated with some of these variants.

Introduction The preoperative evaluation of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patients for subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) includes the assessment of the neuropsychological status of the patient. A widely used preoperative test is the Mattis Dementia rating scale (MDRS). However, the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) has also been proven to be a sensitive, time-sparing tool with high diagnostic validity in PD. We evaluate the utility of the MoCA as a preoperative screening test for PD patients undergoing bilateral STN-DBS. Methods In this single-centre, retrospective study, we analysed pre- and postoperative assessments of MoCA, MDRS, Movement disorder society-Unified PD Rating Scale-motor examination, PD Questionnaire-39 and levodopa equivalent daily dose. Longitudinal outcome changes were analysed using paired t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, linear regression and CHAID (chi-square automatic interaction detector) regression tree model. Results Clinical motor and cognitive scores of 59 patients (61.05±7.73 years, 24 females) were analysed. The MoCA, but not the MDRS, identified significant postoperative cognitive decline in PD patients undergoing STN-DBS. The preoperative MoCA score correlated with postoperative quality of life improvement, whereas the MDRS did not. PD patients with a MoCA score ≤ 23 points had a significant decline of quality of life after DBS surgery compared to patients > 23 points. Conclusion This study identifies the MoCA as an alternative test within the preoperative evaluation of PD patients for the detection of neuropsychological deficits and prediction of the postoperative improvement of quality of life.

Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) is a powerful approach for detecting sequence variations in the human genome. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic defects in Jordanian patients with inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) using WES. WES was performed on proband patients’ DNA samples from 55 Jordanian families. Sanger sequencing was used for validation and segregation analysis of the detected, potential disease-causing variants (DCVs). Thirty-five putatively causative variants (6 novel and 29 known) in 21 IRD-associated genes were identified in 71% of probands (39 of the 55 families). Three families showed phenotypes different from the typically reported clinical findings associated with the causative genes. To our knowledge, this is the largest genetic analysis of IRDs in the Jordanian population to date. Our study also confirms that WES is a powerful tool for the molecular diagnosis of IRDs in large patient cohorts.

Several studies have shown variability in basicranial measurements between populations. Therefore, each population should have specific standards to optimize the accuracy of identification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sexual dimorphism in foramen magnum and occipital condyles measurements using 3D multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), and to assess their utility and reliability for sex estimation in a Jordanian population by means of discriminant function analyses. A total of 500 MDCT scans (288 males and 212 females) were used and a total of 8 basicranial measurements were studied (3 measurements were derived from foramen magnum, and 5 measurements were derived from occipital condyles). Significant sexual dimorphism was found in all basicranial measurements. The most dimorphic variables were length of occipital condyle and maximum bicondylar distance. Including all variables, multivariate and stepwise functions gave an overall accuracy of 77.8% and 78.6%, respectively. However, the multivariate analyses conducted separately for measurements derived from foramen magnum and occipital condyles gave lower overall accuracy of 68.6% and 70.0%, respectively. Basicranial measurements derived from foramen magnum alone predicted males with relatively higher accuracy but were poor at predicting females in the sample (82.6% were males, 49.5% were females, sex bias 33.1%). Adding occipital condyles measurements to the multivariate analysis increased the percentage of correct sexing in females and reduced considerably the sex bias (78.8% male, 76.4% female, sex bias 1.4%). Discriminant function analysis using basicranial measurements derived from both foramen magnum and occipital condyles measurements can be utilized to estimate sex in our population.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1) channels have crucial roles in inflammatory hyperalgesia. Different inflammatory mediators can modulate TRPV1 sensitization. Bradykinin is an algogenic substance released at the site of inflammation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the desensitization of TRPV1 receptor by nonpungent agonists and to determine how bradykinin and prostaglandin E2 receptors (EP3 and EP4) modulate the resensitization of TRPV1 receptor after being desensitized by nonpungent agonists. Tail flick test was used to investigate capsaicin-induced thermal hyperalgesia and the desensitization of TRPV1 by the nonpungent agonists (olvanil and arvanil) in male BALB/c mice weighed (22-25 g). Resensitization of TRPV1 by bradykinin and the role of prostaglandin receptors in mediating sensitization of TRPV1 were also investigated. Intraplantar injection of capsaicin (0.3 µg) produced a robust thermal hyperalgesia in mice, while olvanil (0.3 µg) or arvanil (0.3 µg) produced no hyperalgesia, emphasizing their lack of pungency. Olvanil and arvanil significantly attenuated capsaicin-induced thermal hyperalgesia in mice. Bradykinin significantly reversed the desensitizing effects of arvanil, but not olvanil. EP4 but not EP3 receptors mediate the sensitization of TRPV1 By bradykinin in vivo. The present study provides evidence for a novel signaling pathway through which bradykinin can regulate the TRPV1 ion channel function via EP4 receptor.

The accessory navicular (AN) is an accessory ossicle anatomically located on the medial side of the foot, proximal to the navicular and continuous with the tibialis posterior tendon. It is occasionally a source of pain and local tenderness. Knowledge of the AN and its morphological variations can help identify the source of a patient's symptoms and prevent misinterpreting them as fractures. Foot radiographs from 1,240 patients who presented in two centers with chronic foot pain, or persistent pain developed after trauma, were retrospectively reviewed to determine the incidence and variations of the AN in relation to gender. The AN was found in 20.9% (259/1240). Among 259 feet with AN, Type 1 was identified in 25.4% (66/259), Type 2 in 42.4% (110/259) (20.0% (52/259) Type 2 A and 22.4% (58/259) Type 2B), and Type 3 in 32.0% (83/259). After 13 patients with incomplete medical records had been excluded, the remaining records showed that foot pain was associated with an AN in 10.6% of patients (26/246). In 1.2% of cases, two additional ossicles were found proximal to the navicular, possibly the result of multiple ossification centers that did not unite at the time of development. Patient symptomatology was related to the presence of an AN in 2% of patients with chronic foot pain. The AN could vary morphologically. Background and aims Preclinical animal models are crucial to study pain mechanisms and assess antinociceptive effects of medications. One major problem with current animal behavioral models is their lack of face validity with human nociception and the vulnerability for false-positive results. Here, we evaluated the usefulness of rotarod as a new way to assess inflammatory nociception in rodents. Methods Adult male mice were injected with saline or Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) in the left hindpaws. Mechanical allodynia and rotarod performance were evaluated before and after the administration of CFA. Mechanical allodynia was measured using von Frey filaments. Long-term effect of CFA on rotarod performance was also assessed for 2 weeks. Results Our results showed that CFA administration decreased pain threshold and increased sensitivity to von Frey filaments compared to control group. In rotarod experiments, the starting speed of the rod rotation started at four RPM, and accelerated until it reached 40 RPM in 5 min. Rotarod performance was enhanced from day to day in the control group. However, rotarod performance in CFA group was attenuated after CFA administration, which was significant after 24 h compared to vehicle. This attenuation was blocked by ibuprofen. Haloperidol administration (positive control) produced similar results to CFA administration. CFA did not produce significant attenuation of rotarod performance after 1 week post-injection. Conclusions Collectively, our findings could encourage the use of rotarod assay to measure acute (but not chronic) inflammatory nociception as a useful tool in rodents.

Palmitoylethanolamine (PEA) is a ligand at peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors-α (PPARα), a nuclear receptor that has anti-inflammatory effects. Herein, complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain model in rats and in-vitro calcium imaging studies were used to evaluate the mechanisms that underlie the antinociceptive effects of PEA, including modulating the activity of the transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor 1, which is a key receptor involved in the development of inflammatory pain. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (180-250 g) received subcutaneous injections of CFA (0.1 ml) into the plantar surface of the left hind paw. Von Frey filaments were used to determine the paw withdrawal threshold. PEA (50 µg), WY14643 (50 µg, a selective PPARα agonist) were injected into the plantar surface of the left hind paw at day 7 after CFA injection, and behavioral tests were repeated 6 h after drug administration. Rats were killed and dorsal root ganglia neurons were dissected and prepared for calcium imaging. Neurons were loaded with the calcium-sensitive ratiometric dye Fura-2AM. Changes in [Ca]i were measured as ratios of peak florescence at excitation wavelengths of 340 and 380 nm and expressed as a percentage of the KCl (60 mM) response. Pain is a growing health problem with an increasing prevalence, and represents a large burden worldwide. Pain control can be achieved through pharmacological and non-pharmacological (such as exercise) interventions. The prolonged use of analgesics, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), is accompanied by numerous side effects. No previous studies have examined whether exercise may enhance the analgesic effect of NSAIDs. In the present study, the effect of ibuprofen and swimming exercise on nociception threshold were investigated using a rat model of inflammatory pain. A prophylactic swimming protocol and a treatment swimming protocol were used. In the two protocols, nociception was induced by intraplantar injection of Complete Freund's Adjuvant. The authors hypothesized that swimming exercise may enhance ibuprofen-induced antinociception. In the control group, nociception lasted for 17 days, and ibuprofen produced an antinociceptive effect at a dose of 32 mg/kg. However, swimming exercise enhanced ibuprofen-induced antinociception in the two swimming protocols. Notably, ibuprofen produced a significant increase in the nociception threshold at a dose of 10 mg/kg in the prophylactic swimming group. In addition, the duration of inflammation did not exceed 8 days under either swimming protocol. In conclusion, the combination of ibuprofen and swimming exercise was effective in controlling nociception in a rat model of inflammatory pain. Based on these observations, the combined use of exercise and ibuprofen may be a viable intervention for the control of chronic pain, and may decrease the potential for drug-induced side effects.

Cisplatin and carboplatin are integral parts of many antineoplastic management regimens. Both platinum analogues are potent DNA alkylating agents that robustly induce genomic instability and promote apoptosis in tumor cells. Although the mechanism of action of both drugs is similar, cisplatin appears to be more cytotoxic. In this study, the genotoxic potential of cisplatin and carboplatin was compared using chromosomal aberrations (CAs) and sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) assays in cultured human lymphocytes. Results showed that cisplatin and carboplatin induced a significant increase in CAs and SCEs compared to the control group (pppp>0.05). In conclusion, cisplatin was found to be more genotoxic than carboplatin in the SCE assay in cultured human lymphocytes, and that might explain the higher cytotoxicity of cisplatin.

Various gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have a higher prevalence in women than in men. In addition, estrogen has been demonstrated to have an inhibitory effect on the contractility of GI smooth muscle. Although increased plasma estrogen levels have been implicated in GI disorders, the role of gastric estrogen receptor (ER) in these sex-specific differences remains to be fully elucidated. The present study was designed to investigate the sex-associated differences in the expression of the two ER isoforms, ERα and ERβ, and the effect of estrogen on gastric muscle contraction via the nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway. Experiments were performed on single gastric smooth muscle cells (GSMCs) isolated from male and female Sprague Dawley rats. The effect of acetylcholine (ACh), a muscarinic agonist, on the contraction of GSMCs was measured via scanning micrometry in the presence or absence of 1 µM 17β-estradiol (E2), an agonist to the majority of ERs, 1,3,5-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-propyl-1H-pyrazole (PPT), an ERα agonist, or diarylpropionitrile (DPN), an ERβ agonist. The protein expression levels of ER subtypes in GSMCs were measured using a specifically designed ELISA. GSMCs from female rats had a higher expression of ERα and ERβ protein compared with GSMCs from males. ACh induced less contraction in female that in male GSMCs. Pre-treatment of GSMCs with E2 reduced the contraction of GSMCs from both sexes, but to a greater extent in those from females. PPT and DPN inhibited ACh-induced contraction in GSMCs from females. Furthermore, E2 increased NO and cGMP levels in GSMCs from males and females; however, higher levels were measured in females. Of note, pre-incubation of female GSMCs with Nω-nitro-L-arginine, a NO synthase inhibitor, or 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one, a guanylyl cyclase inhibitor, reduced the inhibitory effect of estrogen on GSMC contraction. In conclusion, estrogen relaxes GSMCs via an NO/cGMP-dependent mechanism, and the reduced contraction in GSMCs from females by estrogen may be associated with the sex-associated increased expression of ERα and ERβ, and greater production of NO and cGMP, compared with that in GSMCs from males.

Several studies have shown variability in osteometric measurements of the skull between populations. Therefore, each population should have specific standards to optimize the accuracy of identification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sexual dimorphism in metric relations between anatomical points of the skull using CT scans in a Jordanian population by means of discriminant function analysis, to determine which continuous variables discriminate between sexes, and to examine the craniofacial changes according to age. 500 CT scans (240 males and 260 females) were used and a total of 11 craniofacial parameters were studied. The data were analyzed using distriminant function analysis. Sexual dimorphism was found mainly in the young adult group. Significant age related changes were noticed in minimum frontal breadth, orbital height and orbital index. In all subjects, the analysis of multivariate (dimorphic variables) and stepwise functions gave an accuracy of 58.8% and 57.0% respectively. Using stepwise analysis, the most dimorphic variables to estimate sex were maximum frontal breadth, bimaxillary breadth and orbital index. The multivariate analysis of all variables gave an accuracy of 58.8%. The percentages of correct sexing in Jordanian population were high using the single variable analysis in females only. In females, classification accuracies of 70.4% using bimaxillary breadth, 70.0% using the orbital index, and 68.1% using maximum frontal breadth were obtained. Additionally, discriminant analysis was conducted separately for each age group. Higher percentages of correct sexing were obtained only in young adults. The results of the discriminant function analysis did not appear to be significant. The results of discriminant function were insignificant in middle aged and elderly groups. Being female and young increases the percentages of correct sexing. Generally, low levels of accuracy of sexual dimorphism were obtained in our study, suggesting that population estimates of dimorphism are highly variable and the equations derived from the discriminant function analysis are not reliable in sex estimation in Jordanians.

Background and Purpose The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) plays a fundamental role in the detection of heat and inflammatory pain responses. Here we investigated the contribution of two potential endogenous ligands [9- and 13- hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (HODE)] to TRPV1-mediated noxious responses and inflammatory pain responses. Experimental Approach 9- and 13-HODE, and their precursor, linoleic acid, were measured in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and in the hindpaws of control and carrageenan-inflamed rats by liquid chromatography/tandem electrospray mass spectrometry. Calcium imaging studies of DRG neurons were employed to determine the role of TRPV1 in mediating linoleic acid, 9-HODE- and 13-HODE-evoked responses, and the contribution of 15-lipoxygenase to the generation of the HODEs. Behavioural studies investigated the contribution of 9- and 13-HODE and 15-lipoxygenase to inflammatory pain behaviour. Key Results 9-HODE (35 ± 7 pmol g−1) and 13-HODE (32 ± 6 pmol g−1) were detected in hindpaw tissue, but were below the limits of detection in DRGs. Following exposure to linoleic acid, 9- and 13-HODE were detected in DRGs and TRPV1 antagonist-sensitive calcium responses evoked, which were blocked by the 15-lipoxygenase inhibitor PD146176 and an anti-13-HODE antibody. Levels of linoleic acid were significantly increased in the carrageenan-inflamed hindpaw (P < 0.05), whereas levels of 9- and 13-HODE were, however, decreased. Intraplantar co-administration of anti-9- and 13-HODE antibodies and treatment with PD146176 significantly (P < 0.01) attenuated carrageenan-induced hyperalgesia. Conclusions and Implications This study demonstrates that, although 9- and 13-HODE can activate TRPV1 in DRG cell bodies, the evidence for a role of these lipids as endogenous peripheral TRPV1 ligands in a model of inflammatory pain is at best equivocal.

Warthin's tumor is a benign tumor that mainly affects the parotid gland. There have been a few reported cases of Warthin’s tumor affecting extra-parotid structures. Herein we report a nasopharyngeal Warthin’s tumor that presented as a unilateral otitis media with effusion. A 57 year-old non-smoker lady, presented with right sided glue ear of 5 months duration, her fiber-optic nasopharyngeal exam showed a smooth mass near the right Eustachian tube. CT scan of the sinuses and post nasal space were unremarkable. Endoscopic biopsy was consistent with Warthin’s tumor. A second endoscopic surgical procedure for complete excision was successfully performed.
