2. Impact of hospital design on the psychological well-being of geriatric patients

Abstract

Purpose – The study investigates the relationship between hospital environmental factors and the well-being of geriatric in-patients. It aims to identify the impact of architectural design on comfort, safety, privacy and stress levels experienced by elderly patients during their hospital stays. Design/methodology/approach – Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research assesses the experiences of 100 geriatric in-patients across various hospital types through surveys, observational checklists and state anxiety measurements. The methodology involves examining architectural features, patient perceptions and correlations among environmental variables and patient experiences. Statistical analyses, including correlations and chi-square tests, were employed to discern associations between environmental variables and patient experiences. Findings – The research identified key architectural features significantly impacting geriatric patients' experiences. Factors such as sturdy beds, furniture quantity, lighting conditions, proximity to facilities and ward occupancy levels were found to influence spatial, sensory and social comfort. Notably, proximity to facilities and control over the immediate environment were crucial for self-control and safety perceptions. Privacy, highly valued by patients, correlated with the presence of curtains and ward occupancy. Moreover, patient stress levels exhibited correlations with autonomy, privacy and ward occupancy. Originality/value – This research offers significant insights into the criticality of specific architectural elements in enhancing comfort and reducing stress for geriatric in-patients. These findings hold substantial value for healthcare facility design, emphasizing the need to prioritize certain design aspects to promote the well-being of elderly patients during hospitalization.

Abstract

Despite abundant negotiation strategies in literature, the complexity of automated negotiation forbids a single strategy from being dominant against all others in different negotiation scenarios. To overcome this, one approach is to use mixture of experts, but at the same time, one problem of this method is the selection of experts, as this approach is limited by the competency of the experts selected. Another problem with most negotiation strategies is their incapability of adapting to dynamic variation of the opponent's behaviour within a single negotiation session resulting in poor performance. This work focuses on both, solving the problem of expert selection and adapting to the opponent's behaviour with our Autonomous Negotiating Agent Framework. This framework allows real-time classification of opponent's behaviour and provides a mechanism to select, switch or combine strategies within a single negotiation session. Additionally, our framework has a reviewer component which enables self-enhancement capability by deciding to include new strategies or replace old ones with better strategies periodically. We demonstrate an instance of our framework by implementing maximum entropy reinforcement learning based strategies with a deep learning based opponent classifier. 11. Optimizing Random Forest Algorithm to Classify Player's Memorisation via In-game Data

Abstract

Assessment of a player's knowledge in game education has been around for some time. Traditional evaluation in and around a gaming session may disrupt the players' immersion. This research uses an optimized Random Forest to construct a non-invasive prediction of a game education player's Memorization via in-game data. Firstly, we obtained the dataset from a 3-month survey to record in-game data of 50 players who play 4-15 game stages of the Chem Fight (a test case game). Next, we generated three variants of datasets via the preprocessing stages: resampling method (SMOTE), normalization (min-max), and a combination of resampling and normalization. Then, we trained and optimized three Random Forest (RF) classifiers to predict the player's Memorization. We chose RF because it can generalize well given the high-dimensional dataset. We used RF as the classifier, subject to optimization using its hyperparameter: n_estimators. We implemented a Grid Search Cross Validation (GSCV) method to identify the best value of n_estimators. We utilized the statistics of GSCV results to reduce the weight of n_estimators by observing the region of interest shown by the graphs of performances of the classifiers. Overall, the classifiers fitted using the BEST n_estimators (i.e., 89, 31, 89, and 196 trees) from GSCV performed well with around 80% accuracy. Moreover, we successfully identified the smaller number of n_estimators (OPTIMAL), at least halved the BEST n_estimators. All classifiers were retrained using the OPTIMAL n_estimators (37, 12, 37, and 41 trees). We found out that the performances of the classifiers were relatively steady at ~80%. This means that we successfully optimized the Random Forest in predicting a player's Memorization when playing the Chem Fight game. An automated technique presented in this paper can monitor student interactions and evaluate their abilities based on in-game data. As such, it can offer objective data about the skills used.

17. A Comparison of Machine Learning Models to Prioritise Emails using Emotion Analysis for Customer Service Excellence

Abstract

There has been little research on machine learning for email prioritization for customer service excellence. To fill this gap, we propose and assess the efficacy of various machine learning techniques for classifying emails into three degrees of priority: high, low, and neutral, based on the emotions inherent in the email content. It is predicted that after emails are classified into those three categories, recipients will be able to respond to emails more efficiently and provide better customer service. We use the NRC Emotion Lexicon to construct a labeled email dataset of 517,401 messages for our proposal. Following that, we train and test four prominent machine learning models, MNB, SVM, LogR, and RF, and an Ensemble of MNB, LSVC, and RF classifiers, on the labeled dataset. Our main findings suggest that machine learning may be used to classify emails based on their emotional content. However, some models outperform others. During the testing phase, we also discovered that the LogR and LSVC models performed the best, with an accuracy of 72%, while the MNB classifier performed the poorest. Furthermore, classification performance differed depending on whether the dataset was balanced or imbalanced. We conclude that machine learning models that employ emotions for email classification are a promising avenue that should be explored further.

Abstract

Purpose: Electrical stimulation (ES) is a widely used technique in the medical field for various purposes. The effect of ES on several skin properties has been investigated; however, its effect on skin vulnerability to irritants remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ES application on skin vulnerability to external irritants. Materials and methods: An experimental study on 12 healthy male subjects (Mean ± SD, 22.9 ± 3.6 years) who completed the study. The subjects were free of skin abnormalities in the volar aspect of both forearms. Three areas were allocated to each forearm and marked as areas 1, 2, and A in the treated forearm, and areas 3, 4, and B in the control forearm. ES was applied to the volar aspect of the treated forearm for 30 min three times a week, for 2 weeks. The effect of ES on skin vulnerability was investigated using 5% and 0.5% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) patches applied to both treated and control forearms. The skin response to irritants was evaluated using transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and a visual erythema score 24 h after patch removal. Results: Compared to the control forearm, ES increased skin permeability and erythema in response to external irritants (SLS), as measured by the visual analog score (Z = 2.75, p = 0.006) and TEWL (p < 0.05), respectively. Conclusions: ES escalates skin reactions to low concentrations of irritant substances, such as SLS, in the area between the two electrodes.
