Abstract Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contain a diverse array of microbes, underscoring the need for regular monitoring to ensure treatment efficacy and protect health. However, detailed studies on waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) are scarce. This study evaluates a full-scale WSP, located in Giza Governorate, Egypt, including anaerobic, facultative, and maturation ponds, examining an array of parameters such as enteric viruses, microeukaryotes (protozoa and algae), bacterial indicators, bacterial pathogens, and physicochemical characteristics. Utilizing multivariate statistical models, we identified significant distinctions in physicochemical parameters and microbial communities, primarily driven by treatment stages rather than temporal variations. In addition, seven viruses (human rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus, astrovirus, hepatitis A virus, polyomavirus, and papillomavirus) were detected during the different stages (inlet, anaerobic, facultative, and outlet) of the WSP, except norovirus and papillomavirus were absent in the outlet stage. The viral log means reductions ranged from 1.24 to 5.94, depending on the stage and virus type. The removal efficiency of bacterial pathogens was more than 99%. High throughput 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing indicated the dominance of animal parasitic Apicomplexa species and Vermamoeba spp. in the WSP. Network analysis indicated significant roles for Ciliophora in virus reduction. Notably, the maturation pond's outlet was dominated by Spirulina maxima, whose mat-forming tendencies may inhibit pathogen removal by providing protective shelters. Although the WSP effectively reduced pathogen levels, the high initial loads resulted in considerable concentrations in the final effluent, posing ongoing public health concerns. This study highlights the imperative of including pathogen standards in national regulations for wastewater reuse.

The direct torque control (DTC) strategy was proposed more than 25 years ago. It is one of the most successful and reliable techniques for AC motors. This paper presents the application of DTC using a four-switch inverter, as one of the non-conventional economic topologies suitable for low power ranges. The experimental prototype proves the validity and effectiveness of the investigated configuration. In addition, for comparison purposes, the DTC technique has been implemented using a conventional six-switch inverter. According to the experimental results, the DTC-based four-switch inverter would be competitive with the conventional topology in low power ranges to achieve an economic AC drive with a satisfactory transient and steady-state performance at moderate costs.

Abstract Background The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors rely on bacterial communities to break down pollutants in wastewater (municipal or industrial). Methods and results In this study, a novel combination of UASB followed by aerobic treatment has been proposed for the treatment of municipal wastewater focusing on bacterial communities using high-throughput sequencing and parasite removal in this novel combination of reactors. Moreover, economic estimation of the compact unit composed of two overlapping UASB reactors, followed by a downflow hanging non-woven fabric (DHNW) reactor, the anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), and chlorine unit was investigated in this study based on community populations of 1000 and 10,000 inhabitants, with a municipal plant capacity of 54,000 and 540,000 m3/year. Cost estimation was conducted based on two scenarios, one considering the contingency cost and auxiliary facility, and the other excluding them. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) revealed that the treatment stages structured the microbial communities. Proteobacteria was the most prevalent phylum in all treatment stages, followed by Bacteroidota in most stages. Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were also present in significant amounts. The treatment system achieved from 40 to 66.67% removal of parasites (parasitic nematode, Cryptosporidium, and microsporidia). Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated a strong positive correlation between chemical and biological oxygen demand (COD/BOD) with Campylobacterales and could be used as a bioindicator of treatment performance. Conclusion These findings can inform the development of more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment systems that take into account microbial ecology and economic considerations.

Recently, hand sanitization has gained attention for preventing disease transmission. Many on-the-market convenient dermal sanitizers contain alcohol, which can be detrimental to the skin. Therefore, three nanoemulgel formulations (LN-F1, LN-F2, LN-F3) incorporating lemon peel extract (LE), and with various increasing concentrations of xanthan gum as a gelling agent and stabilizer, were developed and characterized as a novel alternative. All formulations showed non-Newtonian shear-thinning flow behavior, particle size values below 200 nm, and increasing zeta potential with higher xanthan gum concentrations. All nanoemulgel formulations exhibited greater in vitro phenolic compound release than free LE. LN-F2 (1.0% LE, 20.0% mineral oil, 20.0% Span 80, 4.0% Cremophor RH 40, 4.0% PEG 400, 0.5% xanthan gum, 50.5% dH2O) was selected as the optimal formulation due to improved characteristics. LE and LN-F2 potential cytotoxicity was assessed on MA-104, showing no significant cellular morphological alterations up to 10 mg/mL for both samples. LN-F2 showed in vitro antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. Typhimurium, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, L. monocytogenes, and C. albicans, as well as antiviral activity against phiX 174, but no effect against rotavirus (SA-11). In vivo, LN-F2 presented a removal capacity of 83% to 100% for bacteria and 89% to 100% for fungi. These findings suggest that the formulated nanoemulgel holds potential as a safe and effective antiseptic, providing a viable alternative to commercial alcohol-based formulations.

Background Anogenital warts (AGW) have an important impact on quality of life since they cause discomfort and shame. AGW cannot be effectively treated with a single technique. Objective To compare effectiveness and safety of intralesional vitamin D3 injection and cryotherapy in the treatment of AGW. Patients and methods A randomized comparative clinical study included patients with AGW attending to dermatology, Venerology and andrology clinics, Suez Canal University hospitals, Ismailia, Egypt. 36 patients were divided randomly into 2 groups, group A, included 18 patients who were treated with cryotherapy alone and group B that included 18 patients who were treated with cryotherapy then 0.25–1 ml of intralesional vitamin D3 injection in the same session. Abstract Drainage water in developing countries has a high abundance of pathogenic bacteria and high levels of toxic and mutagenic pollutants. Remediation of drainage water is important in water-poor counties, especially with the growing need to secure sustainability of safe water resources to fulfill increasing demands for agriculture. Here, we assess the efficiency of macrophyte Pistia stratiotes to remediate a polluted drain in Egypt, rich in macronutrients, heavy metals, and different types of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. Drainage water was sampled monthly, for a year, to assess seasonal changes in bacterial abundance, water physicochemical properties (transparency, temperature, dissolved oxygen, EC, pH, N, P, and K), and heavy metals contents (Pb, Zn, and Co) in a polluted drain dominated with P. stratiotes. The ability of P. stratiotes to rhizofiltrate the three heavy metals was calculated. The results showed seasonal variations in the plant rhizofiltration potential of Co and Salmonella abundance. The highest values of dissolved oxygen (12.36 mg/L) and macronutrient elements (N and P) were attained in the winter. The counts of total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococci, and in Salmonella spp. were the highest in the summer. P. stratiotes accumulated Pb more than Zn and Co. The highest levels of rhizofiltration were in summer for Pb and Co and in the autumn for Zn. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that the variation in the bacterial abundance and plant rhizofiltration potential was strongly and significantly affected by water-dissolved oxygen. Moreover, the rhizofiltration potential of Pb and Co showed a positive correlation with water N. Overall, P. stratiotes could be proposed as a potential biomonitor for heavy metals in polluted water.

The Ubiquitous interconnected smart devices enabled by the recent evolution of low-cost, generic, small-size, powerful computing platforms devised the term Internet of Things (IoT), which cross-cuts many areas of our modern day living. IoT applications go way beyond simple sensing and actuation to sophisticated localized processing and decision-making. The recent advances in embedded systems produced a long list of IoT boards equipped with powerful central processing units (CPUs), and graphics processing units (GPUs). Unfortunately, even with the limited energy consumption and high processing power of such GPUs, CPUs are usually the only computational element utilized by the hosted applications, thus hindering the capabilities of the entire board. This is mainly due to the complicated nature of GPU-based programming. In this paper, we are presenting a case study showing the effect of offloading the computationally intensive part of a latency-sensitive educational game to a low-cost Raspberry Pi’s GPU, thus enabling the board to seamlessly host the entire game operations. Relying mainly on the boards CPU shows very long interaction latency i.e., 4.82 s. By efficiently leveraging the powerful coprocessor, VideoCore GPU, we are able to significantly improve the interaction latency to a fraction of a second, making the game conveniently playable.

The current study summarizes the current status of wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs) treatment plants that have already been built in 11 governorates throughout Egypt. Moreover, this study aims to determine the most appropriate chlorine dose for waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) effluents to ensure the treated effluents are suitable for reuse in unrestricted irrigation and to comply with the current legislation on direct discharge onto water bodies. According to the findings, the chlorine doses used as a disinfectant in the treated effluents of the majority of WSP treatment plants ranged from 3 to 13 mg/L. Meanwhile, two of the WSPs treatment plants effluents, the Qus WSPs treatment plant in Qena governorate and the Al Zarabii WSPs treatment plant in Asyut governorate used high chlorine doses reached to 17 and 19 mg/L, respectively. This is due to the fact that both the Qus and Al Zarabii WSPs treatment plants have a high organic load, which necessitated the use of more chlorine to achieve the optimum chlorine dose at 13 mg/L for Qus and 11mg/L for Al Zarabii. The findings demonstrated that chlorine has a powerful effect in completely removing bacteria. Furthermore, in most chlorine-treated wastewater final effluents, as the chlorine doses increased, the chlorophyll-a reading decreased. The amount of trihalomethanes (THMs) produced as disinfectant byproduct was measured. The results proved that the water can be used in unrestricted irrigation, and after adding chlorine, it can be dumped on water bodies without health risks.

The leaves of Azadirachta indica L. and Melia azedarach L., belonging to Meliaceae family, have been shown to have medicinal benefits and are extensively employed in traditional folk medicine. Herein, HPLC analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction of the total methanolic extract emphasized the enrichment of both A. indica L., and M. azedarach L. leaves extracts with phenolic and flavonoids composites, respectively. Besides, 4 limonoids and 2 flavonoids were isolated using column chromatography. By assessing the in vitro antiviral activities of both total leaves extracts against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), it was found that A. indica L. and M. azedarach L. have robust anti-SARS-CoV-2 activities at low half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 8.451 and 6.922 μg/mL, respectively. Due to the high safety of A. indica L. and M. azedarach L. extracts with half-maximal cytotoxic concentrations (CC50) of 446.2 and 351.4 μg/ml, respectively, both displayed extraordinary selectivity indices (SI>50). A. indica L. and M. azedarach L. leaves extracts could induce antibacterial activities against both Gram-negative and positive bacterial strains. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of A. indica L. and M. azedarach L. leaves extracts varied from 25 to 100 mg/mL within 30 min contact time towards the tested bacteria. Our findings confirm the broad-spectrum medicinal value of A. indica L. and M. azedarach L. leaves extracts. Finally, additional in vivo investigations are highly recommended to confirm the anti-COVID-19 and antimicrobial activities of both plant extracts.

Abstract Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common disabling joint disease affecting both males and females. Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a common association with RA. The aim of this work was to study the prevalence and predictors of sexual dysfunction in male and female patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Results The mean age of female patients was 32.1 years and 39.7 years for males. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction was higher in RA female patients than controls, 62.1% versus 41.2% respectively (P ≤ 0.05). The prevalence of global sexual dysfunction was higher in RA male patients than controls, 63.8% versus 47.5% respectively (P ≤ 0.05). Predictors of sexual dysfunction in female RA patients were the number of children, BMI, disease duration, DAS score, HADs-D score, HAQ score, VAS score, joint deformity, and the number of drugs. Predictors of sexual dysfunction in male RA patients were age, disease duration, DAS score, HAQ score, VAS score, and the number of drugs. Conclusion SD is prevalent in RA patients. Disease activity, pain, depression, and disturbed quality of life affect nearly all domains of sexual functions in female and male patients.

The main objective of this article is to provide an efficient design approach of passive grid filters based on evolutionary search algorithms. The case study is conducted on a passive trap filter (one of modern high order passive filters that can provide better performance compared with first order scheme) to be incorporated with a three-phase grid-tied inverter fed from PV array and a battery bank, forming a typical PV grid integration system. The filter design approach is mainly based on particle swarm optimization technique (PSO) as one of the efficient evolutionary search algorithms meanwhile Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been utilized as well for comparison purposes. The developed PSO algorithm searches for the optimum numerical values of filter passive components that can optimize a customized objective function of multiple terms. Unlike single-term objective function, the adopted approach has the advantage of involving multiple items in the customized objective function, such as harmonic attenuation factor and the numerical values of passive filter elements to be minimized. Moreover, the evolutionary search-based design approach is characterized by offering several groups of solutions for the same optimization problem. Thus, the obtained solution is not unique. Consequently, the choice between those solutions depends on the system designers who can select the most convenient solution among several alternatives based on component availability in market, the overall cost of the filter and the desired upper limit of THD of grid currents. The obtained results of this study demonstrate also the capability of evolutionary search approach to get optimum values of filter components that achieve good harmonic attenuation and satisfy the related grid codes such as the IEEE standard 519. Compared with traditional filter design method, the obtained results indicate that the PSO technique achieves lower numerical values of filter parameters in the most of parameters, resulting in an overall reduction in the size and cost of the passive grid filter. In addition, the employed GA succeeded to provide satisfactory numerical values of trap filter as well. However, the PSO technique is better than GA in several terms such as lower final value of objective function and lower numerical values of filter elements and convergence to the optimal solution(s) irrespective the initial guess values.Matlab® has been employed as a simulation platform for PSO and GA algorithms. While the overall grid integration system has been modelled and studied using professional version of PSIM software®.

Background and objective: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common health problem which is accompanied by considerable morbidity and mortality. Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) is one of the hormones that are affected by CKD. The objective was to assess semen parameters and AMH level in CKD patients on hemodialysis. Material and methods: This study was a case control study of 20 patients with stage 4 and 5 CKD on hemodialysis, attending Nephrology Outpatient Clinic and Renal Dialysis Unit of Suez Canal University hospital and 20 healthy fertile controls. Full history, clinical examination, kidney function tests and semen analysis were performed. AMH level in serum and seminal plasma was measured using ELISA. Results: The mean AMH level in serum of case group was 3.35 ± 2.43 ng/mL versus 4.13 ± 3.17 ng/mL in the controls respectively (p > 0.05) while mean AMH level in semen of the case group was 2.13 ± 2.64 ng/mL compared to 9.37 ± 3.79 ng/mL in controls respectively (p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between AMH in seminal plasma and sperm count, total sperm motility, progressive sperm motility and sperm viability, while the AMH level in serum was insignificantly related. Conclusion: Semen parameters in CKD patients on hemodialysis were significantly poorer than normal controls AMH in seminal plasma was significantly decreased in CKD patients (stage 4–5 on hemodialysis) and significantly correlated with the semen parameters.

The lack of an EV charging infrastructure is of the top five barriers preventing the adoption of EVs on a large scale. A long charging time is also one of the five barriers, according to the latest survey published by the IEA in 2021. The estimated increase in demand for EVs is a big challenge in many countries all around the world. This challenge exists in many EU and Middle East countries. The main reason for this problem is the requirement of huge funds to install enough public charging points that result in satisfactory charging services. Hence, the phase-out plans of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles can be carried out successfully and smoothly. Unfortunately, there is a trade-off between the cost of installing charging points and EV charging time. Therefore, it is important to optimize both factors simultaneously. This way, the charging services can be provided at the minimum possible cost and at a satisfactory level of quality. This study determines the optimum ratio of the number of chargers to the number of EVs in a certain province. The optimal number of chargers that are necessary to optimally serve a certain number of EVs has been determined. Two well-known evolutionary search techniques have solved the optimization problem: particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithms (GA). Both algorithms have succeeded in providing many optimal charging infrastructure scenarios. Hence, the decision maker can select the most convenient scenario from several alternatives based on the available budgets and the most convenient charging time.

Abstract Finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is employed in this paper to control the operation of a three-phase grid-connected string inverter based on a direct PQ control scheme. The main objective is to achieve high-performance decoupled control of the active and reactive powers injected to the grid from distributed energy resources (DER). The FCS-MPC scheme instantaneously searches for and applies the optimum inverter switching state that can achieve certain goals, such as minimum deviation between reference and actual power; so that both power components (P and Q) are well controlled to their reference values. In addition, an effective method to attenuate undesired cross coupling between the P and Q control loops, which occurs only during transient operation, is investigated. The proposed method is based on the variation of the weight factors of the terms of the FCS-MPC cost function, so a higher weight factor is assigned to the cost function term that is exposed to greater disturbance. Empirical formulae of optimum weight factors as functions of the reference active and reactive power signals are proposed and mathematically derived. The investigated FCS-MPC control scheme is incorporated with the LVRT function to support the grid voltage in fulfilling and accomplishing the up-to-date grid codes. The LVRT algorithm is based on a modification of the references of active and reactive powers as functions of the instantaneous grid voltage such that suitable values of P and Q are injected to the grid during voltage sag. The performance of the elaborated FCS-MPC PQ scheme is studied under various operating scenarios, including steady-state and transient conditions. Results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed scheme with regard to the achievement of high-performance operation and quick response of grid-tied inverters during normal and fault modes.

This article presents a non-conventional design approach of high order passive filters incorporated with distributed energy grid integration systems based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) as one of multi-objective evolutionary search algorithms. Two topologies of passive grid filters (third order passive damped LCL-filter and trap filter) are chosen as case studies. The presented grid filter design is based searching the optimum values of filter passive elements that can optimize an objective function composed of several terms such as harmonic attenuation factor and size (value) of passive elements (inductors and capacitors). The employed multi-objective design approach has three main advantages: (1) The PSO algorithm offers several groups of solutions to the same optimization problem. Accordingly, the most convenient solution can be chosen based on several factors such as cost of realization, availability in the market and the corresponding THD of grid current. (2) Multi-objective design approach is flexible enough to include other factors in the customized objective function to achieve different design criteria in accordance with new (or updated) versions of grid codes. (3) The PSO algorithm converges to the optimum solution(s) regardless the initial search values (initial guess). Consequently, the algorithm does not need any prior knowledge about filter numerical valuesThe PSO algorithm has been developed in Matlab®, while the overall hardware grid-integration system has been modeled and studied using PSIM® software package. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to get practical and applicable values of filter components that result in good harmonic attenuation and satisfy the related codes of grid integration such as the IEEE standard 519.The main contribution of this paper is the utilization of evolutionary optimization technique to achieve an optimum design of passive grid filters that can optimize simultaneously several contradictory goals such as achieving the maximum possible harmonic attenuation at the lowest possible filter size. Compared with conventional design approach, the PSO-based filter design approach results in lower numerical values of filter components, which leads to considerable reduction in the size and cost of the passive grid filter. Moreover, grid filter design based on evolutionary search approach permits accommodation of several design criteria in the customized objective function with arbitrary weighting factors upon system design requests and new grid codes constrains.

Federated clouds are interconnected cooperative cloud infrastructures offering vast hosting capabilities, smooth workload migration and enhanced reliability. However, recent devastating attacks on such clouds have shown that such features come with serious security challenges. The oblivious heterogeneous construction, management, and policies employed in federated clouds open the door for attackers to induce conflicts to facilitate pervasive coordinated attacks. In this paper, we present a novel proactive defense that aims to increase attacker uncertainty and complicate target tracking, a critical step for successful coordinated attacks. The presented systemic approach acts as a VM management platform with an intrinsic multidimensional hierarchical attack representation model (HARM) guiding a dynamic, self and situation-aware VM live-migration for moving-target defense (MtD). The proposed system managed to achieve the proposed goals in a resource-, energy-, and cost-efficient manner.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a technically challenging procedure rarely associated with severe postprocedure complications. Hormonal changes during pregnancy promote cholelithiasis, but there are limited clinical data available on the outcomes of ERCP in pregnant women. ERCP techniques without irradiation were recently introduced as potential alternative. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the safety of ERCP in pregnancy and to compare outcomes of radiation versus nonradiation ERCP. Materials and Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Medline/Ovid, Web of Science, and Google Scholar through April 18th, 2018 using PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines identified 27 studies reporting the outcomes of ERCP in pregnancy. Random effects pooled event rate and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. Heterogeneity was measured by I2, and meta-regression analysis was conducted. Adverse outcomes were divided into fetal, maternal pregnancy-related, and maternal nonpregnancy-related. Results: In all, 27 studies reporting on 1,307 pregnant patients who underwent ERCP were identified. Median age was 27.1 years. All results were statistically significant (P < 0.01). The pooled event rate for overall adverse outcomes was 15.9% (95% CI = 0.132–0.191) in all studies combined, 17.6% (95% CI = 0.109–0.272) in nonradiation ERCP (NR-ERCP) subgroup and 21.6% (95% CI = 0.154–0.294) in radiation ERCP subgroup. There was no significant difference in the pooled event rate for fetal adverse outcomes in NR-ERCP 6.2% (95% CI = 0.027–0.137) versus 5.2% (95% CI = 0.026–0.101) in radiation ERCP group. There was no significant difference in maternal pregnancy-related adverse outcome event rate between NR-ERCP (8.4%) (95% CI = 0.038–0.173) and radiation ERCP (7.1%) (95% CI = 0.039–0.125). Maternal nonpregnancy-related adverse outcome event rate in NR-ERCP was 7.6% (95% CI = 0.038–0.145), which was half the event rate in radiation ERCP group of 14.9% (95% CI = 0.102–0.211). Conclusions: ERCP done by experienced endoscopists is a safe procedure during pregnancy. Radiation-free techniques appear to reduce the rates of nonpregnancy-related complications, but not of fetal and pregnancy-related complications.

The development of robust bioanalytical devices and biosensors for infectious pathogens is progressing well with the advent of new materials, concepts, and technology. The progress is also stepping towards developing high throughput screening technologies that can quickly identify, differentiate, and determine the concentration of harmful pathogens, facilitating the decision-making process for their elimination and therapeutic interventions in large-scale operations. Recently, much effort has been focused on upgrading these analytical devices to an intelligent technological platform by integrating them with modern communication systems, such as the internet of things (IoT) and machine learning (ML), to expand their application horizon. This review outlines the recent development and applications of bioanalytical devices and biosensors to detect pathogenic microbes in environmental samples. First, the nature of the recent outbreaks of pathogenic microbes such as foodborne, waterborne, and airborne pathogens and microbial toxins are discussed to understand the severity of the problems. Next, the discussion focuses on the detection systems chronologically, starting with the conventional methods, advanced techniques, and emerging technologies, such as biosensors and other portable devices and detection platforms for pathogens. Finally, the progress on multiplex assays, wearable devices, and integration of smartphone technologies to facilitate pathogen detection systems for wider applications are highlighted.

The control techniques of the brushless DC (BLDC) motor have gained a large amount of interest in recent years, with their use being implemented in order to achieve a high-performance drive, including quick transient response and high-quality waveforms at the steady state. This paper provides a comparative study between three control schemes of BLDC motors: the direct power control scheme using a finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) approach, the stator current controlled scheme using an FCS-MPC approach, and the stator current controlled scheme using ON–OFF hysteresis current controllers. The three systems were studied and investigated under the same operating conditions. The comparative study included investigating the performance of the BLDC drive in both steady state and transient operations. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed on the results obtained with each control scheme. The obtained results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the three investigated schemes in controlling the motor speed to the desired value under sudden load changes and achieving satisfactory quick transient responses. However, the results indicate the superiority of the direct power control scheme using an FCS-MPC approach over the others in terms of its minimum torque ripple, lowest torque and speed pulsations, minimum active and reactive power ripples, and high-quality waveforms of the stator currents drawn by the motor with minimum THD.

Next Generation cellular networks are expected to offer better service quality, secure and reliable service provisioning, and more cooperative operation even in unexpected stressful situations. Service provider cooperation can facilitate reliable service provisioning and extended coverage in disasters situations or partial network failures. However, the current 4G and 5G standards do not offer security and privacy-friendly support for inter-operator agility and service mobility, a key enabler for such cooperation. The situation becomes more critical in presence of attackers, where establishing trust relationships becomes very complicated. This paper presents a novel UAV-assisted user-agility support framework that enables trustworthy seamless service migration in a zero-trust environment. The proposed framework facilitates temporal authentication-authority delegation and proxying to enable preservice, all-party mutual authentication. The framework is implemented and tested on top of the srsRAN open-source 4G/5G software stack. Experiments showed that the presented framework managed to facilitate effective and efficient trustworthy service migration between heterogeneous service provider networks.

Background/AimsAlthough proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been widely used for the prevention and treatment of stress gastric ulcers in hospital settings, there are concerns that PPIs increase the risk of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). However, little is known about the risk of CDI following PPI and histamine-2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) use. We evaluated the comparative hospital-acquired CDI occurrence risk associated with the concurrent use of PPIs versus H2RAs.Methods : A systematic search of PubMed, MEDLINE/Ovid, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science, and Google Scholar through August 19, 2016, identified 12 studies that reported the hospital-acquired CDI occurrence following H2RA and PPI use for the prevention and treatment of stress gastric ulcers. Random-effects pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Heterogeneity was measured using I2, and a meta-regression analysis was conducted. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system was used to assess the overall quality of the evidence.Results : A total of 74,132 patients from 12 observational studies were analyzed. Compared to H2RAs, PPIs increased the risk of CDI by 38.6% (pooled odds ratio, 1.386; 95% confidence interval, 1.152 to 1.668; p=0.001; I2=42.81%). Subgroup analyses of the purpose of study medication use, study site, and study design confirmed the consistency of a greater CDI risk with PPIs than with H2RAs. The overall quality of evidence was rated as low.Conclusion : sThe use of PPIs for both the prevention and treatment of stress ulcers was associated with a 38.6% increased risk of hospital-acquired CDI occurrence compared to H2RA use.

Crude oil is one of the critically needed resources. It is the main pillar supporting almost everything we rely on in daily life. Unfortunately, due to many factors, crude oil costs too much. Transportation is one of the critical factors that affect such costs. Due to many environmental risks attached to the transportation process, many countries added very high tariffs to cover any hazards during the transportation, loading, and unloading process. Logistics concerns and political conflicts are the other key factors that can massively impact the transportation cost. This paper presents an Industry 4.0-compliant PeTroShare (PTS), a blockchain-powered trustworthy, logistics-friendly, and cost-efficient crude oil trading platform. PTS is a novel ride-sharing platform that enables an anonymous exchange of crude oil between oil producers and customers, focusing mainly on the product quality, not the source of origin. In our scenario, floating crude oil tankers will hold the cargo to an intermediate position in the open ocean. PTS will match the product availability based on the location and the needed quality of the customer requests. Consequently, the time and distance travelled are minimized. Our simulation results show that enabling the anonymous sharing of crude oil products can significantly enhance system efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Introduction and aim: Genital wart infection is a distressing sexually transmitted infection that causes marked fear and stress to both males and females. Tuberculin Purified protein derivative (PPD) injection is an upcoming safe and effective modality for the treatment of genital warts. Interleukin 17 (IL-17) was found to be lower in wart patients than controls. This study aimed at measurement of serum level of IL-17 in genital warts patients before and after PPD injection. Patients and methods: The study was carried out as case-control interventional study on 63 patients (37 males and 26 females) with genital warts attending Dermatology and Andrology Clinics, faculty of medicine, Suez Canal University hospitals. 50 controls were enrolled in the study. All patients have injected 10 tuberculin units of PPD intradermally in the mother or largest warts every 2 weeks till 6 sessions. Serum level of IL-17 was measured by Sandwich ELISA technique to all patients before and after PPD injection and to all control subjects. Results: The mean age of patients was 30.8 years, the mean duration of warts was 4.73 months, the mean number of warts was 9.76 warts and 14.3% of patients experienced side effects to PPD. (58.7%) of patients were completely recovered from warts. Mean serum IL-17 was 81.1 ± 64.2 pg/mL versus 118.9 ± 93.8 pg/mL in genital wart patients versus controls respectively (P < 0.05) and 81.1 ± 64.2 pg/mL versus 107.1 ± 66.8 pg/mL before and after PPD injection respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusion: IL-17 serum level was significantly lower in genital wart patients than normal controls. IL-17 serum level had been increased significantly after PPD intralesional injection than pretreatment levels and significantly related to clinical response to PPD. IL-17 suggested having a role in the clinical efficacy of PPD in the treatment of genital warts.

The current study addressed the heavy metals accumulation potentials of seven perennial aquatic macrophytes (Cyperus alopecuroides, Echinochloa stagnina, Eichhornia crassipes, Ludwigia stolonifera, Phragmites australis, Ranunculus sceleratus and Typha domingensis) and the pollution status of three drains (Amar, El-Westany and Omar-Beck) in the Nile Delta of Egypt. Nine sites at each drain were sampled for sediment and plant analyses. Concentrations of eight metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, Cd, Ni, and Pb) were determined in the sediment and the aboveground and belowground tissues of the selected macrophytes. Bioaccumulation factor (BF) and translocation factor (TF) were computed for each species. The sediment heavy metals concentrations of the three drains occurred in the following order: El-Westany > Amar > Omar-Beck. The concentrations of sediment heavy metals in the three drains were ordered as follows: Fe (438.45–615.17 mg kg−1) > Mn (341.22–481.09 mg kg−1) > Zn (245.08–383.19 mg kg−1) > Cu (205.41–289.56 mg kg−1) > Pb (31.49–97.73 mg kg−1) > Cd (13.97–55.99 mg kg−1) > Ni (14.36–39.34 mg kg−1) > Co (1.25–3.51 mg kg−1). The sediment exceeded the worldwide permissible ranges of Cu, Zn and Pb, but ranged within safe limits for Mn, Cd, Ni and Co. P. australis accumulated the highest concentrations of Fe, Co, Cd and Ni, while E. crassipes contained the highest concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, and Pb. Except for C. alopecuroides and Cu metal, the studied species had BF values greater than one for the investigated heavy metals. Nevertheless, the TFs of all species (except Cd in L. stolonifera) were less than one. Hence, the studied species are appropriate for accumulation, biomonitoring, and phytostabilization of the investigated metals.

The bacterial profiles of natural household biofilm have not been widely investigated. The majorities of these bacterial lineages are not cultivable. Thus, this study aims (i) to enumerate some potential bacterial lineages using culture based method within biofilm samples and confirmed using Biolog GEN III and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). (ii) To investigate the bacterial profiles of communities in two biofilm samples using next generation sequencing (NGS). Forty biofilm samples were cultured and colonies of each selected prevailing potential lineages (E. coli, Salmonella entrica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes) were selected for confirmation. From obtained results, the counts of the tested bacterial lineages in kitchen biofilm samples were greater than those in bathroom samples. Precision of PCR was higher than Biolog GEN III to confirm the bacterial isolates. Using NGS analysis, the results revealed that a total of 110,554 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained for two biofilm samples, representing kitchen and bathroom biofilm samples. The numbers of phyla in the kitchen biofilm sample (35 OTUs) was higher than that in bathroom sample (18 OTUs). A total of 435 genera were observed in the bathroom biofilm sample compared to only 256 in the kitchen sample. Evidences have shown that the empirical gadgets for biofilm investigation are becoming convenient and affordable. Many distinct bacterial lineages observed in biofilm are one of the most significant issues that threaten human health and lead to disease outbreaks.

Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks are special case of ad hoc networks that, besides lacking infrastructure, communicating entities move with various accelerations. Accordingly, this impedes establishing reliable end-to-end communication paths and having efficient data transfer. Thus, VANETs have different network concerns and security challenges to get the availability of ubiquitous connectivity, secure communications, and reputation management systems which affect the trust in cooperation and negotiation between mobile networking entities. In this survey, we discuss the security features, challenges, and attacks of VANETs, and we classify the security attacks of VANETs due to the different network layers.

Effect of controlled atmospheres (CAs) at various concentrations of CO2, N2 and O2 on the lethal times of Tribolium castaneum and Trogoderma granarium was investigated at 20 and 30 ºC. Experiments were performed using a recirculatory multi-flask apparatus. The results revealed that, the shortest times (0.1, 0.3 and 0.9 day for adults, larvae and pupae, respectively) required to obtain 50% mortality of T. castaneum stages were at 100% CO2 followed by 75% CO2, 50% CO2, 99% N2 + 1% O2 and 25% CO2, at higher tested temperature (30 °C). Adults were more sensitive to the different treated CAs than larvae, while pupae were the most tolerant stages. Diapausing larvae of T. granarium were the most tolerant to all treated CAs at tested temperatures. The effectiveness of CAs to decrease its LT50 values were 100% CO2 followed by 99% N2 + 1% O2 and 98% N2 + 2% O2 at 30°C. It may be concluded that diapausing larvae are more difficult to control with CAs than normal larvae. A treatment with N2 relying on the absence of O2 will take a longer treatment time to control the diapausing larvae and in late winter, exposure times needed for control may be even longer. If CAs were to be applied under such circumstances, a high content of CO2 would be the best option to achieve control in a comparatively short time.

Objective: To present an unusual case of spontaneous pneumomediastinum subsequent to recreational amphetamine use. Case report: A young African American adult male was admitted to internal medicine service for treatment of rhabdomyolysis secondary to methamphetamine use. On admission, he was complaining of chest pain in addition to nausea and generalized muscle aches. By his second hospital day, chest pain had resolved yet physical exam demonstrated crepitation of the anterior chest and left axilla. Portable chest x-ray revealed subcutaneous emphysema in addition to pneumomediastinum. Conclusion: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rare complication of amphetamine use that is often associated with subcutaneous emphysema and can be diagnosed with chest x-ray. Management is conservative, with observation, pain control, and supplemental oxygen as needed.
