Objective: This study was undertaken to determine the serotype distribution and drug susceptibility patterns in pneumococcal isolates recovered from patients with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Methods: All invasive pneumococcal isolates received between June 2014 and June 2016 were included in the study as part of a national laboratory-based IPD surveillance program. Isolates recovered from clinical specimens of normally sterile body sites were included. Results: A total of 41 different serotypes were identified among the 132 pneumococcal isolates included in this study. The most prevalent serotypes/serogroups were 12 (8.3%), 15 (8.3%), 19 F (7.6%), 3 (6.1%), and 19A (6.1%);. It was observed that overall vaccine coverage rates for pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV), PCV7, PCV10 and PCV13 were 15.9%, 24.2% and 37.1% respectively. 56.8% (n = 75) of the isolates were non-susceptible to at least one antibiotic and 40.9% (n = 54) of the isolates were resistant to PEN (M). 18.9% (n = 25) of the isolates were multi-drug resistant (MDR).The case fatality rate was 15.9%. Conclusion: Our study results call for broader vaccine coverage, emphasizes the need to introduce the conjugate pneumococcal vaccine for the high risk adult population and stress the importance of continuous surveillance of serotypes and antimicrobial resistance to guide vaccine development and antimicrobial stewardship activities. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a hepatocarcinogenic metabolite produced by certain strains of Aspergillus section Flavi, is one of the major contaminants in red chili products that affect human health. This study determined the level of AFB1 in chili traded in Oman. In addition, a survey was conducted among 260 respondents to assess consumers’ knowledge and awareness of aflatoxin contamination in chili. A competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed on 58 samples of dried red chili pods, red chili flakes, and red chili powder collected from various markets in Oman. The ELISA results showed the presence of AFB1 in all the samples analyzed. None of the dried red chili pod samples exceeded 10 ppb AFB1, the maximum permissible limit adopted by the Oman Legislation for foods, whereas a few red chili flakes and red chili powder samples exceeded 10 ppb. However, AFB1 content in all the samples was below the maximum tolerance limit of 20 ppb set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The survey results revealed that most respondents were unaware of aflatoxins, as education, gender, and social media were found to be significant determinants of aflatoxin awareness. This study provides valuable insights into the level of AFB1 contamination in red chili products, raises the need for aflatoxin awareness in Oman, and urges for safe culinary practices in the region.

Water activity is considered an important factor in assessing the stability of food. Understanding the relationship between water activity and equilibrium moisture content (moisture sorption isotherm) benefits food processing in terms of modeling of drying and estimation of shelf life. In addition, glass transition helps to quantify molecular mobility which helps in determining the stability of food. The aim of this study was to determine the moisture sorption isotherm and thermal characteristics of freezedried tuna. These characteristics will help in determining the monolayer moisture and glassy state of the product, at which food is considered most stable. Moisture sorption isotherm at 20 oC and thermal characteristics (over a wide temperature range i.e. from -90 to 250 oC) of freeze-dried tuna flesh were measured. Isotherm data were modeled by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) and GAB (GuggenheimAnderson–De Boer) models. The GAB and BET monolayer water values were determined as 0.052 and 0.089 g g−1 dry-solids (dry-basis), respectively. In the case of samples at moisture contents above 0.10 g g−1 (wet basis), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) thermograms showed two-step state changes (i.e. two glass transitions), one exothermic peak (i.e. molecular ordering) and another endothermic peak (i.e. solids-melting). However, the sample at moisture content of 0.046 g g−1 showed three-step state changes (i.e. three glass transitions). The multiple glass transition could be explained by the natural heterogeneity of tuna flesh and inhomogeneity due to molecular incompatibility of the different compositions.
