Abstract The present investigation examined the oropharyngeal roof of two turtles having different feeding behaviors: the landform Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca graeca) primarily herbivores and the semi-aquatic red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) lives in freshwater that opportunistic omnivorous grossly and by scanning and light microscopes. Grossly, the Greek tortoise had a V-shaped roof consisting of the upper rhamphotheca, peri-palatine region, upper alveolar ridge, peripheral palatine ridge, median palatine ridge, vomer, choanae, caudal palatine part, and pharynx. At the same time, the red-eared slider had a semilunar roof consisting of upper rhamphotheca, two peripheral palatine ridges, core of palatine ridges, upper alveolar band, vomer, choanae, caudal palatine part, and pharynx. SEM revealed that the red-eared slider roof appeared more straightforward. The upper rhamphotheca is sharp, with a median premaxillary notch in the red-eared slider that gives a powerful bite for cutting to compensate absence of the teeth. Additionally, the red-eared slider’s upper alveolar band is interrupted by a single upper alveolar ridge that appears spiky, pointed, and longer as it needs powerful chewing of prey and there are two types of teeth-like projections at its peri-palatine area for food-crushing and chewing. The Greek tortoise palatine region had numerous ridges and folds to provide roughness for food processing. Greek tortoises had small-sized choanae with two choanal folds to minimize choanal openings when eating dusty grasses. Histologically, Greek tortoise palate was rostrally thicker and more keratinized than caudally, and the caudal palatine region was characterized by a single pair of circumvallate-like papilla with multiple mucous openings and secretions, while red-eared slider palate was slightly keratinized at the peri-choanal region, and the rest of the palate was non-keratinized with few mucous openings. The current investigation found various structural oropharyngeal roof adaptations to feeding behavior in the omnivore red-eared slide compared to the herbivorous Greek turtle.

Introduction: Chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) such as polycythaemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocytosis are associated with atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events, especially if JAK2 mutation is there. In rare cases, also spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) can be seen. Case Presentation: This case series describes two case reports of MPNs in which SCAD was found in both of them in addition to standard atherosclerosis. First one was about a 42-year-old man who was admitted for acute myocardial infarction (MI) and was later found to have PV and SCAD. The second one was about a 52-year-old man who was also admitted for acute MI and was later found to have SCAD and essential thrombocythemia. JAK2V617F missense mutation was found in both cases. Conclusion: MPNs with JAK2 mutations are associated with SCAD in addition to usual atherosclerosis. This association needs further research.

Abstract Background Cardiac symptoms are a characteristic feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a disorder with lately achieved recognition as a systemic illness according to established standards. The research’s objective was aimed at investigating the transthoracic echocardiography role in assessing right ventricular (RV) dysfunction among individuals diagnosed with COPD, as well as to examine the potential correlation between blood pro B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentrations + and this diagnostic procedure. Methods Arterial blood gasses, spirometry, echocardiography, and serum pro BNP were done for 80 COPD patients and 20 healthy smokers, and some echocardiographic parameters were correlated with degree of airflow limitation. Results 77.5% of COPD cases exhibited pulmonary hypertension (PHTN), and on classifying our COPD patients, it was found that 65% of patients in group II had PHTN and 90% of patients in group III had PHTN. Systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP), mean pulmonary arterial pressure (MPAP), right ventricular mid diameter (RVMD), right ventricular basal diameter (RVBD), right ventricular longitudinal diameter (RVLD), right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) above pulmonary and aortic valve, and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) along with RVEF exhibited a significant variance among all groups. A negative correlation was observed among forced expiratory volume (FEV) 1% and (RVMD as well as RVBD) and between Pro BNP and (TAPSE and RVEF). Conclusions PHTN was found in 77.5% of COPD patients and is negatively correlated with FEV1%. Serum pro BNP level exhibits a negative correlation with FEV1% in stable COPD patients.

Abstract The main focus of this study was on using radiation to make an ultra-absorbent hydrogel (UAH) from sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin (GL) biopolymers. This UAH can effectively handle water and nitrogen in wheat farming during drought stress. The hydrogel was synthesized by gamma irradiation-induced SA/GL/polyacrylamide crosslinking at 10–40 kGy. Varying SA/GL ratios affected swelling and the gel fraction of SA/GL/PAm hydrogels. The (SA/GL 17/83) hydrogel exhibited a 40.03 g/g swelling degree, while increasing SA content resulted in higher swelling, peaking at 75.5 g/g for (SA/GL 83/17). This indicated a synergistic interaction between SA and GL. The gel fraction also increased from 76.8 to 90.3%, with a higher GL content reflecting increased crosslinking. After multiple hydrolysis cycles, the hydrogel achieved 1293 (g/g) swelling and 36 days of water retention. When applied to wheat (Triticuma estivum) under drought stress, it significantly improved shoot length (18%), root length (43%), shoot fresh weight (49%), and shoot dry weight (51%) under extreme drought. The significant increases in protein and carbohydrate content in both shoots (up to 32% and 19%, respectively) and grains (up to 21% and 24%, respectively), along with the reduction in proline content (up to 38%), demonstrate that ultra-absorbent hydrogel (UAH) effectively enhances nitrogen content, photosynthesis, and overall plant health in wheat under varying drought stress levels. This novel SA/GL-based UAH holds promise for addressing water scarcity and agricultural challenges, offering a sustainable solution for water and nitrogen management under drought stress.

Abstract Background Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is a pivotal treatment for lymphoma patients. The BeEAM regimen (Bendamustine, Etoposide, Cytarabine, Melphalan) traditionally relies on cryopreservation, whereas the CEM regimen (Carboplatin, Etoposide, Melphalan) has been optimized for short-duration administration without the need for cryopreservation. This study rigorously compares the clinical and safety profiles of the BeEAM and CEM regimens. Methods A controlled, randomized clinical trial was conducted with 58 lymphoma patients undergoing ASCT at the International Medical Center (IMC) in Cairo, Egypt. Patients were randomly assigned to either the BeEAM (n = 29) or CEM (n = 29) regimen, with an 18-month follow-up period. Clinical and safety outcomes were meticulously compared, focusing on time to engraftment for neutrophils and platelets, side effects, length of hospitalization, transplant-related mortality (TRM), and survival rates. Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) deployments are anticipated to reach 29.42 billion by the end of 2030 at an average growth rate of 16% over the next 6 years. These deployments represent an overall growth of 201.4% in operational IoT devices from 2020 to 2030. This growth is alarming because IoT devices have permeated all aspects of our daily lives, and most lack adequate security. IoT-connected systems and infrastructures can be secured using device identification and authentication, two effective identity-based access control mechanisms. Physical Layer Security (PLS) is an alternative or augmentation to cryptographic and other higher-layer security schemes often used for device identification and authentication. PLS does not compromise spectral and energy efficiency or reduce throughput. Specific Emitter Identification (SEI) is a PLS scheme capable of uniquely identifying senders by passively learning emitter-specific features unintentionally imparted on the signals during their formation and transmission by the sender’s radio frequency (RF) front end. This work focuses on image-based SEI because it produces deep learning (DL) models that are less sensitive to external factors and better generalize to different operating conditions. More specifically, this work focuses on reducing the computational cost and memory requirements of image-based SEI with little to no reduction in performance by selecting the most informative portions of each image using entropy. These image portions or tiles reduce memory storage requirements by 92.8% and the DL training time by 81% while achieving an average percent correct classification performance of 91% and higher for SNR values of 15 dB and higher with individual emitter performance no lower than 87.7% at the same SNR. Compared with another state-of-the-art time-frequency (TF)-based SEI approach, our approach results in superior performance for all investigated signal-to-noise ratio conditions, the largest improvement being 21.7% at 9 dB and requires 43% less data.

Abstract Bovine mastitis caused by infectious pathogens, mainly Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), constitutes a major destructive challenge for the dairy industry and public health. Berberine chloride (BER) and Cyperus rotundus possess a broad spectrum of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiproliferative activities; however, their bioavailability is low. This research aimed first to prepare an ethanolic extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizomes (CRE) followed by screening its phytochemical contents, then synthesis of BER and CRE loaded chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) (BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs), afterward, the analysis of their loading efficiency in addition to the morphological and physicochemical characterization of the formulated NPs employing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Zeta Potential (ZP), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) assessments compared to their crude forms to evaluate the enhancement of bioavailability and stability. Isolation of bacterial strains from the milk of mastitic cows, used for induction of mammary gland (MG) inflammation in female albino rats, and a preliminary investigation of the prophylactic oral doses of the prepared NPs against S. aureus-induced mastitis in female rats. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs is 1 mg/kg b.w. BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs alone or in combination show significant (P ≤ 0.05) DPPH radical scavenging activity (69.2, 88.5, and 98.2%, respectively) in vitro. Oral administration of BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs to mastitis rats significantly (P ≤ 0.05) attenuated TNF-α (22.1, 28.6 pg/ml), IL-6 (33.4, 42.9 pg/ml), IL-18 (21.7, 34.7 pg/ml), IL-4 (432.9, 421.6 pg/ml), and MPO (87.1, 89.3 pg/ml) compared to mastitis group alongside the improvement of MG histopathological findings without any side effect on renal and hepatic functions. Despite promising results with BER and CRE nanoparticles, the study is limited by small-scale trials, a focus on acute administration, and partially explored nanoparticle-biological interactions, with no economic or scalability assessments. Future research should address these limitations by expanding trial scopes, exploring interactions further, extending study durations, and assessing economic and practical scalability. Field trials and regulatory compliance are also necessary to ensure practical application and safety in the dairy industry. In conclusion, the in vitro and in vivo results proved the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory efficacy of BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs in low doses with minimal damage to the liver and kidney functions, supposing their promising uses in mastitis treatment.

Abstract This study introduces an experimental investigation of a novel direct trend evaporative cooler based on a ground-air heat exchanger (GAHE) using porous clay vessels as an evaporation media under a variety of operational conditions, including air flow rate, inlet air temperature, temperature of inlet water, and in air humidity. The evaluation of the GAHE performance was based on the air-cooling effect, wet-bulb and dew-point efficiencies, energy efficiency ratio, water evaporation rate, specific water evaporation, specific cooling capacity, specific total cost, and CO2 emission rate. The influences of dry-bulb temperature, the incoming air's relative humidity (RH), and six air flow rates ranging from 11 to 25 L/s on the performance are investigated and discussed. Results indicated that increasing the air flow rate leads to an increase in the cooling capacity. Energy efficiency ratio (EER) reaches the highest value of about 25.5 recorded at 3:00 PM with air flow rate = 11 L/s. The lowest EER value is approximately 7.2 when the measured inlet and outlet temperatures are the closest at 7:00 PM, with a flow rate of 25 L/s. Increasing the air flow rate from 11 to 17 L/s increased the wet bulb efficiency, and the airflow rate was inversely proportional to wet-bulb efficiency. The maximum and minimum average dew-point efficiencies are 64% and 58% at 17 L/s and 22 L/s respectively. The water evaporation rate increases by 182.1%, increasing the air flow rate from 11 to 25 L/s.

Abstract A new modified cellulose with diaminoguanidine (Cel-Gua) synthesized for specific recovery of Cu (II), Cd (II), and Hg (II) from the alum sample. Cellulose was silanized by 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane and then was modified with diaminoguanidine to obtain N-donor chelating fibers. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta potential, electrons disperse X-ray analysis, elemental analyses (C, H and N), and thermogravimetric analysis were used for characterization. Factors influencing the adsorption were thoroughly examined. Under the optimal conditions, the Cel-Gua sorbent displayed maximum adsorption capacities of 94.33, 112.10 and 95.78 mg/g for Cu (II), Cd (II), and Hg (II), respectively. The sorption process of metal ions is equipped by kinetic model PSO and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The calculated thermodynamic variables confirmed that the adsorption of Cu (II), Cd (II) and Hg (II) by Cel-Gua sorbent is a spontaneous and exothermic process. In our study, we used the molecular operating environment software to conduct molecular docking simulations on the Cel-Gua compound. The results of the docking simulations showed that the Cel-Gua compound displayed greater potency and a stronger affinity for the Avr2 effector protein derived from Fusarium oxysporum, a fungal plant pathogen (code 5OD4). The adsorbent was stable for 7 cycles, thus allowing its safe reutilization.

Abstract Machine learning and remote sensing techniques are widely accepted as valuable, cost-effective tools in lithological discrimination and mineralogical investigations. The current study represents an attempt to use machine learning classification along with several remote sensing techniques being applied to Landsat-8/9 satellite data to discriminate the various outcropping lithological rock units at the Duwi Shear Belt (DSB) area in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt. Multi-class machine learning classification, multiple conventional remote sensing mapping techniques, spectral separability analysis based on the Jeffries-Matusita (J-M) distance measure, fieldwork, and petrographic investigations were integrated to enhance the lithological discrimination of the exposed rock units at DSB area. The well-recognized machine learning classifier (Support Vector Machine—SVM) was adopted in this study, with training data determined carefully based on enhancing the lithological discrimination attained from various remote sensing techniques of False Color Composites (FCC), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF), along with the fieldwork data and the previously published geologic maps. High overall accuracy of the SVM classification was obtained, however, inspection of the individual rock unit classes’ accuracies revealed lower accuracy for certain types of rock units which were also found associated with lower separability scores as well. Among the least separable rock units were; metagabbro rocks that showed high spectral similarity with the volcaniclastic metasediments rocks, and the metaultramafics of the ophiolitic mélange showed spectral attitude of high correlation to that of the Hammamat volcanosedimentary rocks. Target-oriented Color Ratio Composites (CRC) technique was implemented to better discriminate these hardly separable rock units. A final integrated geological map was obtained comprising the various discriminated Neoproterozoic basement rock units of the DSB area. The successfully mapped litho-units include; Meatiq Group (amphibolites, gneissic granitoids, and mylonitized granitoids), ophiolitic mélange (metaultramafics, metagabbro-amphibolites, and volcaniclastic metasediments), Dokhan volcanics, Hammamat sediments, and granites. An adequate description of these rock units was also given in light of the conducted intense fieldwork and petrographic investigations.

Abstract Hot dry rock (HDR) is regarded as a promising resource of geothermal energy and becomes an important field for future geothermal development due to its advantages of high temperature, wide distribution and huge reserves. At present, HDR research is mainly focused on the modeling and efficiency evaluation of power generation cycle, but its relationship with the source side of the system has not been considered in the field of integrated energy systems. Therefore, this paper proposes a day‐ahead scheduling method for regional integrated energy systems (RIES) with HDR based on information gap decision theory (IGDT). First, the heat transfer system model of HDR is established according to the energy flow model and basic structure of the HDR enhanced geothermal system (EGS). Second, a comprehensive geothermal energy system scheduling model is established from HDR based on the energy hub modeling structure. Then, the IGDT is introduced to analyze the renewable energy output uncertainty in the model. Finally, through a real RIES analysis, the simulation results verified the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed model. The scheduling cost was ¥47,073 when EGS participated in the scheduling. Access to EGS reduced the system's total 24‐h energy purchase by 8305 kW, natural gas consumption by 3051.9 m3, and total carbon emissions by 742.28 kg. The latter emphasized that the proposed model achieves the purpose of reducing the system cost, saving energy and reducing emissions.

Abstract Objectives To determine how fetuin-A contributes to diagnosing and assessing MASLD severity. Methods Fifty MASLD patients and fifty healthy control participants were involved in this retrospective case-control research. Abdominal ultrasonography, fibroscan with controlled attenuated parameter scan (CAP scan), laboratory investigation (including fetuin-A assessment), clinical examination, and history-taking were performed on every case. Results Fetuin-A level was considerably higher in the Cases group (1154.85 ± 629.89) than in the Control group (505.29 ± 150.4) (p 702.5 with 82% sensitivity, 90% specificity, and 86% overall accuracy. Conclusion One possible marker for MASLD diagnosis could be fetuin-A. Furthermore, a substantial association between such marker and the severity of the disease as it revealed a significant correlation with ultrasound grading and fibroscan with controlled attenuated parameters. Abstract Background The inappropriate use of pesticides including fungicides creates severe biological hazards that can endanger fish health and impede sustainable aquaculture. Objective This study investigated the negative impacts of metiram (MET), a fungicide on the health status of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) for a 96-hour duration as an acute exposure in a static renewal system. Methods Three hundred fish (average body weight: 37.50 ± 0.22 g) were assigned into six groups (50 fish/group) with five replicates (10 fish/replicate). Fish were exposed to various six concentrations (0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, and 7.5 mg/L) of MET as a water exposure to for 96-hour without water exchange. The fish’s behavior, clinical signs, and mortalities were documented every day of the exposure period. Additionally, MET’s impact on blood profile, stress biomarkers, hepato-renal functions, immune-antioxidant status, and brain biomarker were closely monitored. Results The lethal concentration (LC50) of MET estimated using Finney’s probit technique was 3.77 mg/L. The fish’s behavior was severely impacted by acute MET exposure, as clear by an increase in surfacing, loss of equilibrium, unusual swimming, laterality, abnormal movement, and a decline in aggressive behaviors. The survivability and hematological indices (white and red blood cell count, differential white blood cell count, hematocrit value, and hemoglobin) were significantly reduced in a concentration-dependent manner following MET exposure. Acute exposure to MET (1.5–7.5 mg/L) incrementally increased stress biomarkers (nor-epinephrine, cortisol, and glucose), lipid peroxides (malondialdehyde), and brain oxidative DNA damage biomarker (8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine). A hepato-renal dysfunction by MET exposure (4.5–7.5 mg/L) was evidenced by the significant increase in the alanine and aspartate aminotransferases and creatinine values. Moreover, a substantial decline in the immune parameters (lysozyme, complement 3, serum bactericidal activity, and antiprotease activity) and antioxidant variables (total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase) resulted from acute MET exposure. Conclusion According to these findings, the 96-hour LC50 of MET in Nile tilapia was 3.77 mg/L. MET exposure triggered toxicity in Nile tilapia, as seen by alterations in fish neuro-behaviors, immune-antioxidant status, hepato-renal functioning, and signifying physiological disturbances. This study emphasizes the potential ecological dangers provoked by MET as an environmental contaminant to aquatic systems. However, the long-term MET exposure is still needed to be investigated.

Abstract Integration between the analyses of both fieldwork and remote sensing dataset were employed to assess the structural evolution of molasse basins and explore gold mineral deposits in the El Qash area, Central Eastern Desert of Egypt. Sandstone, mudstones, wacke, and pebbly conglomerates make up most of the sediments in the molasse basins. The younger basins (595–575 Ma) are small, less weathered, and mostly Dokhan detritus-filled basins compared to the larger older basins (> 625–605 Ma), which have more weathered sources mainly of arc metavolcanics. The molasse basins appear to have originated in a north–south regional extensional setting, characterized by a prolonged period of left-lateral transtension combined with the formation of NNE-trending synformal folds during an ENE–WSW compression phase. Notably, en-echelon arrays of normal faults, oriented perpendicular to the boundary of the strike-slip shear zone, are a recurring feature in basins formed through transtension. Furthermore, oblique NE-SW compression played a role in generating SW-dipping thrust faults and regional folding with NW–SE orientation, along with the reactivation of transtensional normal faults in a reverse manner. Multispectral satellite imagery data and radar data are used to map the relevant lithological units, structures, and hydrothermal alteration zones. This study concludes that the regions where gold deposits may be explored in connection with prospecting alteration minerals include the area around the ophiolitic assemblages, and the granitic intrusions, in addition to the felsite and the molasse sediments contacts.

Abstract Pink bollworm (PBW) Pectinophora gossypiella is an important pest cotton worldwide. There are multiple factors which determines the occurrence and distribution of P. gossypiella across different cotton growing regions of the world, and one such key factor is ‘temperature’. The aim was to analyze the life history traits of PBW across varying temperature conditions. We systematically explored the biological and demographic parameters of P. gossypiella at five distinct temperatures; 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ± 1 °C maintaining a photoperiod of LD 16:8 h. The results revealed that the total developmental period of PBW shortens with rising temperatures, and the highest larval survival rates were observed between 30 °C and 35 °C, reaching 86.66% and 80.67%, respectively. Moreover, significant impacts were observed as the pupal weight, percent mating success, and fecundity exhibited higher values at 30 °C and 35 °C. Conversely, percent egg hatching, larval survival, and adult emergence were notably lower at 20 °C and 40 °C, respectively. Adult longevity decreased with rising temperatures, with females outliving males across all treatments. Notably, thermal stress had a persistent effect on the F1 generation, significantly affecting immature stages (egg and larvae), while its impact on reproductive potential was minimal. These findings offer valuable insights for predicting the population dynamics of P. gossypiella at the field level and developing climate-resilient management strategies in cotton.

Abstract Background Heterakis gallinarum (H. gallinarum) is a common poultry parasite that can be found in the ceca of many gallinaceous bird species, causing minor pathology and reduced weight gain. Most infections go unnoticed in commercial flocks due to the dependence on fecal egg counts, which are prone to false-negative diagnoses. Furthermore, there is a lack of research on gastrointestinal nematodes that use molecular identification methods, which could be essential for rapid diagnosis and developing efficient control approaches. As a result, the study aimed to look at the cause of mortality in layer chickens induced by H. gallinarum in Egyptian poultry farms using morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular characterization. Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and cell-mediated immune responses from damaged cecal tissues were also examined. Results Seventy bird samples from ten-layer flocks of different breeds (Native, white, and brown layers) suffering from diarrhea, decreased egg output, and emaciation were collected. Cecal samples were collected from affected and non-affected birds and were examined for parasitic diseases using light and a scanning electron microscope. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (COX1) gene was used to characterize H. gallinarum. Our results showed that the collected nematodal worms were identified as H. gallinarum (male and female), further confirmed by COX1 gene amplification and sequence alignment. Gene expression analysis of the inflammatory markers in infected tissues showed a significant up-regulation of IL-2, IFN-γ, TLR-4, and IL-1β and a significant down-regulation of the anti-inflammatory IL-10. The mRNA level of the apoptotic cas-3 revealed apoptotic activity among the H. gallinarum samples compared to the control group. Conclusions Our results implemented the use of molecular methods for the diagnosis of Heterakis, and this is the first report showing the tissue immune response following infection in layers: upregulation of IL-1β, IFN-γ, Il-2, and TLR-4, while down-regulation of anti-inflammatory IL-10 in cecal tissue, Cas-3 apoptotic activity and Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)activity with immunophenotyping of T-cells in Heterakis infected tissue.

Abstract Captioning an image involves using a combination of vision and language models to describe the image in an expressive and concise sentence. Successful captioning task requires extracting as much information as possible from the corresponding image. One of these key pieces of information is the topic to which the image belongs. The state-of-the-art methods used topic modeling depending only on caption text in order to extract these topics. The problem with extracting the topics using topic modeling only on caption text is that it lacks the consideration of the image’s semantic information. Instead, concept modeling extracts the concepts directly from the images in addition to considering the corresponding caption text. Concept modeling can be used in image captioning to extremely capture the image contexts and benefit from it to produce more accurate descriptions. In this paper, novel image captioning models are proposed by utilizing the concept modeling technique. The first concept-based model is proposed by utilizing LSTM as a decoder while the second model is proposed in association with new multi-encoder transformer architecture. Standard metrics have been used to evaluate the proposed models using Microsoft COCO and Flickr30K datasets. The proposed models outperformed the related work methods with reduced computational complexity.

Abstract In this study, three Gemini cationic surfactants related to thiazol-2-amine with three hydrocarbon chain lengths including 3-hexylthiazol-3-ium (TAC6), 3-dodecylthiazol-3-ium (TAC12) and octadecylthiazol3-ium (TAC18) were prepared. Surfactant structures were confirmed with IR and 1HNMR Spectroscopies. Critical micelle concentrations for all surfactants in 15% DMSO-Water solvent were measured using conductometric, refractometric, and densitometric techniques. Thermodynamics parameters were computed and explained. Also, enhancing properties of all surfactants were indicated under the effect of two concentrations, 0.001 M and 0.01 M, of six inorganic salts including Cl−, Br−, I−, Co+2, Cu+2, and Mn+2 radicals using conductivity and refractive index measurements. All techniques used to measure critical micelles concentration showed a good convergence in measuring CMC values and the behavior of all surfactants in 15% DMSO-water solvent. Increasing the binding constant of the counter ion and association constant reflects the effect of hydrocarbon chain length increment on enhancing micelle formation, where TAC 18 was shown as the lowest CMC in all applied measurements. Modeling the density of all surfactant solutions under study indicates an increase in hydrophobic polarizability with an increase in the molecular weight of the surfactant. Inorganic salts decreased the CMC of all surfactants with the increase in Gibbs free energy of micellization which ensures easier formation of more stable micelles in the presence of a salt solution. The effect of salts on decreasing CMC for all surfactants under study was arranged in the following order: Mn+2

Solar cells are currently the focus of a great deal of research. The aim is to reduce their cost price. To achieve this, we need to reduce the mass of the materials and increase the conversion efficiency of these solar cells. This has motivated research into the use of thin films such as a-Si, CdTe, CIGS. This increase in efficiency requires optimizing the performance of the photovoltaic parameters. In this modeling and simulation work, we use the SCAPS-1D software to study the effect of the recombination speed of the electrons and holes in the CIGS layer, the effect of the thickness of the layers and the effect of the gap energy of each layer of the material used for this solar cell on the short-circuit current Jsc, the open-circuit voltage Voc, the form factor FF and the electrical efficiency η of the CIGS cell for a Mo/p-CIGS/p-Si/In2S3/i-ZnO/Al-ZnO single-junction structure. In this study, we found that recombination speed affects the efficiency of the photovoltaic cell. The gap energy of the absorber layers influences the cell's efficiency, while the other layers (In2S3, ZnO, Al-ZnO) do not have a great influence on solar cell performance and increasing the thickness of the absorber layer has a major influence on efficiency, increasing it up to a certain limit. The thicknesses of the CIGS, p-Si, In2S3, i-ZnO and Al‑ZnO layers need to be in the order of 0.3µm, 0.8µm, 0.05µm, 0.07µm and 0.1µm respectively to achieve better efficiency (31.42%).

Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become an essential structural determination technique with recent hardware developments making it possible to reach atomic resolution, at which individual atoms, including hydrogen atoms, can be resolved. In this study, we used the enzyme involved in the penultimate step of riboflavin biosynthesis as a test specimen to benchmark a recently installed microscope and determine if other protein complexes could reach a resolution of 1.5 Å or better, which so far has only been achieved for the iron carrier ferritin. Using state-of-the-art microscope and detector hardware as well as the latest software techniques to overcome microscope and sample limitations, a 1.42 Å map of Aquifex aeolicus lumazine synthase (AaLS) was obtained from a 48 h microscope session. In addition to water molecules and ligands involved in the function of AaLS, we can observe positive density for ∼50% of the hydrogen atoms. A small improvement in the resolution was achieved by Ewald sphere correction which was expected to limit the resolution to ∼1.5 Å for a molecule of this diameter. Our study confirms that other protein complexes can be solved to near-atomic resolution. Future improvements in specimen preparation and protein complex stabilization may allow more flexible macromolecules to reach this level of resolution and should become a priority of study in the field.

Contamination of agricultural and industrial products by Aspergillus section Circumdati becomes a true problem, especially, because a lot of species in this section can yield ochratoxins and other toxins. In this study, morphological criteria and partial calmodulin gene were used to identify 34 strains belonging to Aspergillus section Circumdati isolated from Vitis vinifera and Calotropis procera plants. The population is characterised by A. insulicola, A. ochraceopetaliformis, A. ochraceus, and A. pseudoelegans. The polyketide synthase (pks) gene involved in ochratoxins (OTA) production was investigated by Aopks1, 2 and AoLc35–12L, R primers. Fifteen strains belonging to A. ochraceus were positive for pks gene, whilst A. insulicola, A. ochraceopetaliformis, and A. pseudoelegans were negative. All tested strains were able to produce ochratoxin A with different levels of 0.020–53 ppm except one isolate of A. ochraceus (IAEMAo6). The green synthesised ZnO-NPs have a significant inhibitory effect on OTA production by A. insulicola and A. pseudoelegans.

Background: High blood pressure (BP) is a major contributor to mortality and cardiovascular diseases. Despite the known benefits of exercise for reducing BP, it is crucial to identify the most effective physical activity (PA) intervention. This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to evaluate the available evidence on the effectiveness of various PA interventions for reducing BP and to determine their hierarchy based on their impact on BP. Methods: A search of PubMed, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Eric databases was conducted up to December 2022 for this systematic review and NMA. Randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies targeting healthy children and adolescents aged 6–12 years old were included in this study. Only studies that compared controlled and intervention groups using PA or exercise as the major influence were included. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Three independent investigators performed the literature screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. We used Bayesian arm-based NMA to synthesize the data. The primary outcomes were systolic BP and diastolic BP. We calculated the mean differences (MDs) in systolic BP and diastolic BP before and after treatment. Mean treatment differences were estimated using NMA and random-effect models. Results: We synthesized 27 studies involving 15,220 children and adolescents. PA combined with nutrition and behavior change was the most effective intervention for reducing both systolic BP and diastolic BP (MD = –8.64, 95% credible interval (95%CI):–11.44 to –5.84; MD = –6.75, 95%CI: –10.44 to –3.11), followed by interventions with multiple components (MD = –1.39, 95%CI: –1.94 to –0.84; MD = –2.54, 95%CI: –4.89 to –0.29). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that PA interventions incorporating nutrition and behavior change, followed by interventions with multiple components, are most effective for reducing both systolic BP and diastolic BP in children and adolescents.

Abstract This study presents an innovative approach for predicting water and groundwater quality indices (WQI and GWQI) in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, addressing critical challenges of scarcity and pollution in arid regions. Recent literature highlights the increasing attention towards WQI based on water pollution index (WPI) and GWQI as essential tools for simplifying complex hydrogeological data, thereby facilitating effective groundwater management and protection. Unlike previous works, the present research introduces a novel hybrid method that integrates non-parametric kernel Gaussian learning (GPR), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and decision tree (DT) algorithms. This approach marks the first application of a non-parametric kernel for groundwater quality pollution index prediction in Saudi Arabia, offering a significant advancement in the field. Through laboratory analysis and the combination of various machine learning (ML) techniques, this study enhances prediction capabilities, particularly for unmonitored sites in arid and semi-arid regions. The study’s objectives include feature engineering based on dependency sensitivity analysis to identify the most influential variables affecting WQI and GWQI, and the development of predictive models using ANFIS, GPR, and DT for both indices. Furthermore, it aims to assess the impact of different data portions on WQI and GWQI predictions, exploring data divisions such as (70% / 30%), (60% / 40%), and (80% / 20%) for training and testing phase, respectively. By filling a critical gap in water resource management, this research offers significant implications for the prediction of water quality in regions facing similar environmental challenges. Through its innovative methodology and comprehensive analysis, this study contributes to the broader effort of managing and protecting water resources in arid and semi-arid areas. The result proved that GPR-M1 exhibited exceptional testing phase accuracy with RMSE = 0.0169 for GWQI. Similarly, for WPI, the ANFIS-M1 achieved high testing predictive skills with RMSE = 0.0401. The results emphasize the critical role of data quality and quantity in training for enhancing model robustness and prediction precision in water quality assessment.

Abstract Indian mustard (Brassica juncea; Brassicaceae) is an edible, oilseeds-yielding crop widely consumed as a food spice owing to its richness in nutrients with several health benefits. The current study aims to dissect the B. juncea metabolome heterogeneity among its different organs including leaf, stem, flower, and seed. Moreover, assessing the metabolome differences between two different varieties RH-725 and RH-761 grown at the same conditions. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) post-silylation was used to dissect the composition of nutrient metabolites coupled to multivariate data analysis. Variation in sulphur aglycones was measured using headspace-solid phase-microextraction HS-SPME coupled to GC–MS. A total of 101 nutrient metabolites were identified with the abundance of sugars represented by monosaccharides in all organs, except for seeds which were enriched in disaccharides (sucrose). α-Linolenic acid was detected as a marker fatty acid in leaf from RH-725 at 12.5 µg/mg. Malic acid was detected as a significant variant metabolite between the two varieties as detected in the leaf from the RH-725 variety at ca. 128.2 µg/mg compared to traces in RH-761. 7 Volatile sulphur compounds were detected at comparable levels in RH-725 and RH-761, with 3-butenyl isothiocyanate was the most abundant at 0.8–2 ng/mg.

Abstract Steel construction is increasingly using thin-walled profiles to achieve lighter, more cost-effective structures. However, analyzing the behavior of these elements becomes very complex due to the combined effects of local buckling in the thin walls and overall global buckling of the entire column. These factors make traditional analytical methods difficult to apply. Hence, in this research work, the strength of bi-axially loaded track and channel cold formed composite column has been estimated by applying three AI-based symbolic regression techniques namely (GP), (EPR) and (GMDH-NN). These techniques were selected because their output models are closed form equations that could be manually used. The methodology began with collecting a 90 records database from previous researches and conducting statistical, correlation and sensitivity analysis, and then the database was used to train and validate the three models. All the models used local and global slenderness ratios (λ, λc, λt) and relative eccentricities (ex/D, ey/B) as inputs and (F/Fy) as output. The performances of the developed models were compared with the predicted capacities from two design codes (AISI and EC3). The results showed that both design codes have prediction error of 33% while the three developed models showed better performance with error percent of 6%, and the (EPR) model is the simplest one. Also, both correlation and sensitivity analysis showed that the global slenderness ratio (λ) has the main influence on the strength, then the relative eccentricities (ex/D, ey/B) and finally the local slenderness ratios (λc, λt).

Abstract Paternal genome elimination (PGE) is an intriguing but poorly understood reproductive strategy in which females are typically diploid, but males lose paternal genomes. Paternal genome heterochromatin (PGH) occurs in arthropods with germline PGE, such as the mealybug, coffee borer beetles, and booklice. Here, we present evidence that PGH initially occurs during early embryo development at around 15 h post-mating (hpm) in the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley. Transcriptome analysis followed by qPCR validation indicated that six histone lysine methyltransferase (KMT) genes are predominantly expressed in adult females. We knocked down these five genes through dsRNA microinjection. We found that downregulation of two KMT genes, PsEZH2-X1 and PsEHMT1, resulted in a decrease of heterochromatin-related methylations, including H3K27me1, H3K27me3, and H3K9me3 in the ovaries, fewer PGH male embryos, and reduced male offspring. For further confirmation, we obtained two strains of transgenic tobacco highly expressing dsRNA targeting PsEZH2-X1 and PsEHMT1, respectively. Similarly, fewer PGH embryos and fewer male offspring were observed when feeding on these transgenic tobacco plants. Overall, we present evidence that PsEZH2-X1 and PsEHMT1 have essential roles in male embryo survival by regulating PGH formation in cotton mealybugs.

Abstract Natural products received much attention as an environmentally beneficial solution for pest management. Therefore, the extracts of invasive silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav.) weeds using their berries parts (seeds, peels and mucilage) supported by bioassay-guided fractionation were tested against both the greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) and Erwinia carotovora pv. carotovora causes of the blackleg of potatoes. The seeds and peels of S. elaeagnifolium were successively extracted by maceration using dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and ethanol (EtOH), respectively. While, its mucilage was extracted using EtOAc. The successive EtOH extract of the plant seeds had promising inhibition efficacy and the best minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of 50 µg/ml against E. Carotovora amongst other extracts (DCM and EtOAc of the plant berries parts). Depending on dose response activity, EtOH extract had G. mellonella larval mortality and pupal duration rates (LC50; 198.30 and LC95; 1294.73 µg/ml), respectively. Additionally, this EtOH extract of seeds was fractionated using preparative TLC to three characteristic bands. The insecticidal and bacterial activities of these isolated bands (SEA, SEB, and SEC) were evaluated at a dose of 100 µg/ml, causing mortality by 48.48, 62.63 and 92.93% (G. mellonella larvae) and inhibition by 15.22, 0.00 and 31.66 mm (E. carotovora), respectively. Moreover, the separated major three bands were tentatively identified using LC-ESI-MS analysis revealing the presence of two phenolic acids; chlorogenic acid (SEA) and dicaffeoyl quinic acid (SEB) in addition to one steroidal saponin (SEC) annotated as borassoside E or yamoscin. Finally, the plant seeds’ successive EtOH extract as well as its active constituents, exhibited potential broad-spectrum activity and the ability to participate in future pest management initiatives. A field study is also recommended to validate its bio-efficacy against selected pests and to develop its formulations.

Abstract This study evaluated the impact of differential sowing windows and improved weed management strategies on weed dynamics, productivity, and economic viability of direct drum seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the temperate agro-ecosystem of Kashmir. A two-year field experiment was conducted utilizing a split-plot design with two sowing dates (May 10 and June 3) as main plots and six weed management practices as sub-plots. The earlier sowing date (May 10) resulted in significantly enhanced leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, and grain and straw yields compared to the later sowing (June 3). Among weed management treatments, four mechanized conoweedings (equivalent to weed-free conditions) and sequential application of bensulfuron methyl + pretilachlor (60 and 600 g a.i. ha−1) as pre-emergence followed by 2,4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha−1) as post-emergence demonstrated superior efficacy in weed suppression and augmentation of crop growth parameters and yield attributes. These treatments also exhibited the lowest weed index and highest benefit–cost ratio. The May 10 sowing, coupled with efficacious weed control measures, significantly reduced weed density and biomass while concomitantly improving nutrient uptake and economic returns. The results indicate that adopting a May 10 sowing date for direct seeded rice, in conjunction with either four conoweedings or the aforementioned sequential herbicide application, can optimize agronomic productivity and economic profitability under the temperate conditions of Kashmir. The study aided in choosing the best sowing window and efficient weed management strategy for attaining higher productivity and profitability of direct seeded rice in temperate conditions.

Abstract The accumulation of chromium in renal tissues promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress, genomic and cellular harm, and ultimately necrotic and apoptotic cell death induced by free radicals. Hence, the utilization of antioxidant phytochemicals becomes crucial for cellular defense against oxidative damage. This study endeavors to explore the potential protective effects of an aqueous avocado seed extract (ASE) on rabbit kidneys exposed to chromium‐induced damage. Fifteen adult rabbits were distributed into three groups: Group 1 was kept as the control. The second and third groups received a daily dose of K2Cr2O7 (5 mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 2 weeks. While the third group was given an oral dose of ASE (400 mg/kg). In rabbits administered with Cr (VI), kidney homogenates showed a marked increase in Malondialdehyde (MDA) (69.3 ± 4.1 nmol/g) along with a decrease in glutathione (59 ± 5.8 nmol/mg) content and the activity superoxide dismutase (SOD) (0.5 ± 0.05 U/mg protein), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (16.7 ± 1.1 μmol/mg protein), and catalase (CAT) (73.8 ± 3.9 U/g protein) compared to the levels in control group. Also, the gene expression data for the enzymes SOD, GPx, and CAT dropped dramatically in kidney tissue following Cr (VI) injection. Additionally, Bowman's capsule and glomerulus showed degenerative alterations in the kidney's histopathology and immunohistochemistry. ASE treatment when administered along with Cr (VI) enhanced the activity and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and improved histopathological conditions. The findings of this study unequivocally show that avocado seed extract, which is rich in phenolic derivatives, is a potent nephroprotective agent that inhibits nephrotoxicity induced by Cr (VI) in rabbits.

Abstract The development of sustainable analytical methodologies that minimize hazards, waste generation, and energy consumption has become crucial. This study introduces pioneering green‒blue-white approaches for the simultaneous quantification of montelukast sodium (MLK) and fexofenadine hydrochloride (FEX) in combination formulations. The first approach employs an ultra-performance liquid chromatographic method (UPLC) with a green micellar mobile phase of 0.02 M sodium dodecyl sulfate and 10% 1-pentanol (65:35%). The method demonstrated excellent resolution, peak symmetry, and a short analysis time, with retention times of 3.53 min for MLK and 1.67 min for FEX. The MLK and FEX linearities were 1–260 and 1.2–312 μg/mL, respectively. The second approach involves complementary built-in spectroscopic techniques (second derivative, third derivative, and ratio difference methods) using water as a solvent, providing a green, simple, low-cost alternative in laboratories where expensive chromatographic devices may not be readily available. The MLK and FEX linearities were 3–50 and 3–60 μg/mL, respectively. All methods were comprehensively validated and showed satisfactory results. The proposed methods demonstrated excellent linearity (r2 ≥ 0.9990), accuracy (recovery 98.5–101.5%), and precision (RSD ≤ 2%) across wide concentration ranges. A multifaceted evaluation was conducted to assess the environmental sustainability, real-world applicability, and economic viability of the proposed methods in comparison with previously reported techniques. This comprehensive assessment leveraged several state-of-the-art tools, including NEMI, ComplexGAPI, AGREE, ESA, BAGI, and RGB12. The suggested approaches exhibited favorable quadrant profiles in the NEMI and ComplexGAPI assessments, coupled with higher AGREE scores (0.90, 0.86) than reported (0.62, 0.74, 0.75, 0.69, 0.74, 0.74, and 0.75), in addition to higher ESA score (88, 92) than reported (75, 84, 85, 79, 82, 82, and 83), collectively affirming their environmentally friendly credentials. Moreover, we embraced the innovative notions of 'blueness' and 'whiteness' assessment by harnessing the recently formulated BAGI and RGB12 algorithms. The higher BAGI score (90, 82.5) than reported (72.5, 70, 70, 67.5, 67.5, 67.5, and 72.5), confirmed the excellent real-world applicability of the proposed methods, while the notable RGB12 indices (89.8, 88.1) than reported (67.8, 72.8, 71.5, 67.1, 73.7, 70.3, and 73.2), validated their cost-effectiveness and overall sustainability, contributing to an eco-friendly future for quality control processes.

Abstract β-lactam resistance is a significant global public health issue. Outbreaks of bacteria resistant to extended-spectrum β-lactams and carbapenems are serious health concerns that not only complicate medical care but also impact patient outcomes. The primary objective of this work was to express and purify two soluble recombinant representative serine β‑lactamases using Escherichia coli strain as an expression host and pET101/D as a cloning vector. Furthermore, a second objective was to evaluate the potential, innovative, and safe use of galloylquinic acid (GQA) from Copaifera lucens as a potential β-lactamase inhibitor. In the present study, bla CTX-M-15 and bla KPC-2 represented genes encoding for serine β-lactamases that were cloned from parent isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively, and expression as well as purification were performed. Moreover, susceptibility results demonstrated that recombinant cells became resistant to all test carbapenems (MICs; 64–128 µg/mL) and cephalosporins (MICs; 128–512 µg/mL). The MICs of the tested β-lactam antibiotics were determined in combination with 4 µg/mL of GQA, clavulanic acid, or tazobactam against E. coli strains expressing CTX-M-15 or KPC-2-β-lactamases. Interestingly, the combination with GQA resulted in an important reduction in the MIC values by 64–512-fold to the susceptible range with comparable results for other reference inhibitors. Additionally, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of GQA was determined using nitrocefin as a β-lactamase substrate. Data showed that the test agent was similar to tazobactam as an efficient inhibitors of the test enzymes, recording smaller IC50 values (CTX-M-15; 17.51 for tazobactam, 28.16 µg/mL for GQA however, KPC-2; 20.91 for tazobactam, 24.76 µg/mL for GQA) compared to clavulanic acid. Our work introduces GQA as a novel non-β-lactam inhibitor, which interacts with the crucial residues involved in β-lactam recognition and hydrolysis by non-covalent interactions, complementing the enzyme’s active site. GQA markedly enhanced the potency of β-lactams against carbapenemase and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing strains, reducing the MICs of β-lactams to the susceptible range. The β-lactamase inhibitory activity of GQA makes it a promising lead molecule for the development of more potent β-lactamase inhibitors.

Abstract This study was to determine whether extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from insulin-producing cells (IPCs) can modulate naïve mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to become insulin-secreting. MSCs were isolated from human adipose tissue. The cells were then differentiated to generate IPCs by achemical-based induction protocol. EVs were retrieved from the conditioned media of undifferentiated (naïve) MSCs (uneducated EVs) and from that of MSC-derived IPCs (educated EVs) by sequential ultracentrifugation. The obtained EVs were co-cultured with naïve MSCs.The cocultured cells were evaluated by immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, C-peptide nanogold silver-enhanced immunostaining, relative gene expression and their response to a glucose challenge.Immunostaining for naïve MSCs cocultured with educated EVs was positive for insulin, C-peptide, and GAD65. By flow cytometry, the median percentages of insulin-andC-peptide-positive cells were 16.1% and 14.2% respectively. C-peptide nanogoldimmunostaining providedevidence for the intrinsic synthesis of C-peptide. These cells released increasing amounts of insulin and C-peptide in response to increasing glucose concentrations. Gene expression of relevant pancreatic endocrine genes, except for insulin, was modest. In contrast, the results of naïve MSCs co-cultured with uneducated exosomes were negative for insulin, C-peptide, and GAD65. These findings suggest that this approach may overcome the limitations of cell therapy.

Introduction: Torreya grandis is a gymnosperm belonging to Taxodiaceae. As an economically important tree, its kernels are edible and rich in oil with high unsaturated fatty acids, such as sciadonic acid. However, the kernels from different T. grandis landraces exhibit fatty acid and oil content variations. Objectives: As a gymnosperm, does T. grandis have special regulation mechanisms for oil biosynthesis? The aim of this study was to dissect the genetic architecture of fatty acid and oil content and the underlying mechanism in T. grandis. Methods: We constructed a high integrity reference sequence of expressed regions of the genome in T. grandis and performed transcriptome-referenced association study (TRAS) for 10 fatty acid and oil traits of kernels in the 170 diverse T. grandis landraces. To confirm the TRAS result, we performed functional validation and molecular biology experiments for oil significantly associated genes. Results: We identified 41 SNPs from 34 transcripts significantly associated with 7 traits by TRAS (−log10 (P) greater than 6.0). Results showed that LOB domain-containing protein 40 (LBD40) and surfeit locus protein 1 (SURF1) may be indirectly involved in the regulation of oil and sciadonic acid biosynthesis, respectively. Moreover, overexpression of TgLBD40 significantly increased seed oil content. The nonsynonymous variant in the TgLBD40 coding region discovered by TRAS could alter the oil content in plants. Pearson’s correlation analysis and dual-luciferase assay indicated that TgLBD40 positively enhanced oil accumulation by affecting oil biosynthesis pathway genes, such as TgDGAT1. Conclusion: Our study provides new insights into the genetic basis of oil biosynthesis in T. grandis and demonstrates that integrating RNA sequencing and TRAS is a powerful strategy to perform association study independent of a reference genome for dissecting important traits in T. grandis.

Retting has been employed to extract natural fibers from agricultural wastes as a biological and cost-effective approach for centuries. With its global abundance, banana pseudo-stem is a promising agro-waste for lignocellulosic fiber extraction. In this study, fibers were extracted from the pseudo-stems after being pre-treated under four conditions using seawater at room temperature for up to 35 d Bacterial isolation from the fresh seawater sample and screening for ligninolytic ability were conducted. Bacterial load as well as laccase and manganese peroxidase enzyme activity profile assay during the retting duration were analyzed. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-day diffraction (XRD) analyses were also examined for both pre-treated and untreated extracted fibers. The results shows that six out of the eight bacterial isolates had the ability to degrade lignin. The treatments (Raw stem + Raw seawater) and (Autoclaved stem + Raw seawater) recorded the highest viable bacterial load of 9.24 × 102 and 4.46 × 102 CFU, respectively, on the 14th day of the retting process. Additionally, the highest laccase and manganese peroxidase enzymes activity was recorded for (Raw stem + Raw seawater) and (Autoclaved stem + Raw seawater) treatments in the second to the third week. The FT-IR spectra of the pre-treated fibers revealed relative reductions in peaks attributed to polysaccharides and other amorphous substances for all retting conditions. The XRD diffractogram revealed that the crystallinity index (CI) of pre-treated fibers increased in all seawater retting treatment conditions. However, the CI for fibers pre-treated under enzymatic conditions were enhanced even after five weeks. Sequence analysis for selected bacterial isolates showed homology to sequences of Bacillus velezensis, Shewanella sp. L8–5, and Citrobacter amalonaticus and Bacillus subtilis j8 strain. From these findings, it was suggested that physical, biological, and chemical actions were collectively involved in the seawater retting process of banana pseudo-stems.

The demand for fossil fuels is rising rapidly, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising clean energy alternative that could help meet future demands way sustainably, especially if produced using renewable methods. For hydrogen to meaningfully contribute to energy transitions, it needs more integration into sectors like transportation, buildings, and power that currently have minimal hydrogen usage. This requires developing extensive cross-sector hydrogen infrastructure. This review examines hydrogen combustion as a fuel by exploring and comparing production techniques, enriching ammonia with hydrogen as a CO2-free option, and hydrogen applications in engines. Additionally, a techno-economic environmental risk analysis is discussed. Results showed steam methane reforming is the most established and cost-effective production method at $1.3–1.5/kg H2 and 70–85% efficiency but generates CO2. Biomass gasification costs $1.25–2.20/kg H2 and pyrolysis $1.77–2.05/kg H2 offering renewable options. However, bio-photolysis currently has high costs of $1.42–2.13/kg H2 due to low conversion rates requiring large reactors. Blending H2/NH3 could enable carbon-free combustion, aiding carbon neutrality pursuits, but minimizing resultant NOx is crucial. Hydrogen's wide uses from transportation to power underline its potential as a transformational energy carrier.

The combined thermal and photovoltaic technology in PV/T systems is considered as a greatly promising technology for smart buildings. Thus, investigations for enhancing the PV/T performance are still proceeding. This research presents an investigation for novel configurations of cooling jets for the PVT system. The linear and circular distribution for the inlet jets considering regular and irregular positioning for all the jets as new cooling configurations are implemented. Moreover, the proposed geometrical configurations are optemized regarding the performance to identify the most suitable configuration that achieves the optimum efficiency and temperature. Furthermore, a novel hybrid ANN model is presented for predicting the performance of the PVT systems. This model combines the multi-feedforward neural network (MFFNN) with an optimization technique called reptile search algorithm (RSA). The proposed model can process the studied parameters to predict the PVT performance parameters (top surface temperature, temperature un-uniformity, outlet temperature, and efficiencies). The proposed MFFNN-RSA model minimized the mean square error to less than 0.4857×10-3. The maximum temperature decrease achieved by the presented configuration reached 60.62K compared to the uncooled case, while the minimum temperature un-uniformity reached 1K and 6K for 400 and 1000 W/m2, respectively. The increase of the ambient temperature found to decrease the temperature un-uniformity in all the cases. The irregular jet with the linear distribution was found to achieve the optimum performance of the overall, thermal, and electrical efficiencies of 63.5%, 49.6%, and 14.25%, respectively. Furthermore, the electricity production cost was reduced by 11.6%, and the yearly CO2 emissions were reduced by 215.3 kg/m2 compared to the normal PV system. The proposed irregular-line distribution of the jets is found to be the best configuration regarding the temperature of the PV model and the overall efficiency considering the pumping losses.

Abstract Rhinoviruses (RVs) cause upper respiratory tract infections and pneumonia in children and adults. These non-enveloped viruses contain viral coats of four capsid proteins: VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4. The canyon on VP1 used cell surface receptor ICAM-1 as the site of attachment and for the internalization of viruses. To date, there has been no drug or vaccine available against RVs. In this study, bioactive natural compounds of rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus L.), which are known for their pharmacological potential, were considered to target the VP1 protein. A total of 30 bioactive natural compounds of rosemary were taken as ligands to target viral proteins. The PkCSM tool was used to detect their adherence to Lipinski’s rule of five and the ADMET properties of the selected ligands. Further, the CB-Dock tool was used for molecular docking studies between the VP1 protein and ligands. Based on the molecular docking and ADMET profiling results, phenethyl amine (4 methoxy benzyl) was selected as the lead compound. A comparative study was performed between the lead compound and two antiviral drugs, Placonaril and Nitazoxanide, to investigate the higher potential of natural compounds over synthetic drugs. Placonaril also targets VP1 but failed in clinical trials while Nitazoxanide was examined in clinical trials against rhinoviruses. It was discovered from this study that the (4 methoxy benzyl) phenethyl amine exhibited less toxicity in comparison to other tested drugs against RVs. More research is needed to determine its potential and make it a good medication against RVs.

Abstract Offshore wind farms (OWFs) play a crucial role in producing renewable energy in modern electrical power systems. However, to ensure that these facilities operate smoothly, they require robust control systems. As a result, this paper employed the newly developed Walrus Optimization algorithm (WaOA) to optimize the design parameters of fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controllers in the power electronic interface circuits of the studied wind energy conversion system (WECS). In contrast to conventional optimization techniques like GA and PSO, the suggested approach proves more effective. The paper validates the WaOA application in optimizing FOPID controllers within a WECS comprising two, onshore and offshore, VSC stations at the two ends of an HVDC transmission system connecting OWFs to the mainland. The study shows that the WaOA outperforms GA and PSO, improving system stability and enabling quick recovery after disturbances. The study carried out using MATLAB/Simulink highlights the significance of newly recently introduced optimization techniques to ensure efficient and reliable operation of offshore wind energy systems, thereby expediting the transition to sustainable energy sources.

A significant amount of research has been done in the last few decades to reduce the risk of injury for occupants and the structures that are subjected to impact loading. Metamaterials have been proven to be useful in energy-absorbing structures to improve a structure's crashworthiness performance by reducing the negative impacts during collision. The metal additive manufacturing industry, especially Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), has made it easier to produce complex metamaterials with remarkable mechanical characteristics like lightweight, high specific strength, and effective energy absorption. This review paper investigates the transformative potential of bio-inspired metamaterial designs, which are additively manufactured using LPBF machines, for use in protective energy-absorbing structures. First, biomimicry in engineering is briefly discussed. The review focuses on the energy absorption performance of different designs, like thin-walled structures and different bio-inspired metamaterials. It discusses the effects of base metal, process conditions, and manufacturing defects. Optimization methods to enhance the design and crashworthiness of these bio-inspired energy absorbers are investigated. Various characterization methodologies including experimental techniques and numerical simulations, are highlighted, with a particular emphasis on integrating manufacturing defects into simulations. Finally, possible applications and future trends in aerospace, automotive, construction, and medical applications are reviewed. Despite decades of research into energy absorbers, there remains a lack of a comprehensive review on the use of additively manufactured metamaterials as energy absorbers, particularly those inspired by nature. This review paper addresses this gap by examining recent studies in the field, assessing the effectiveness of various bio-inspired metamaterial designs, their crashworthiness, and the associated characterization methods under different loading scenarios.

Abstract In the years 2021–2022 and 2022–2023, an experiment was carried out at the IFS Unit, College of Agriculture, PJTSAU, Rajendranagar in order to determine the best one-acre integrated farming system model for Telangana's small and marginal farmers. Seven farm models among which six models were developed by combining the various components i.e., cropping systems, fruit cropfodder crops and livestock components, in different proportions, and compared with rice-groundnut system which is a major farming approach in Telangana using randomized block design. The seven models were as follows: M1: Rice–Groundnut; M2: Rice–Groundnut, Pigeonpea + Sweetcorn (1:3)—Bajra, Bt cotton + Greengram (1:2)—Maize; M3: Rice–Groundnut, Pigeonpea + Sweetcorn (1:3)—Bajra, Pigeonpea + Maize (1:3)—Sunhemp; Napier grass, Sheep (5 + 1); M4: Rice–Groundnut, Pigeonpea + Sweetcorn (1:3)—Bajra, Bt cotton + Greengram (1:2)—Maize, Pigeonpea + Maize (1:3)—Sunhemp, Poultry unit; M5: Guava, Hedge Lucerne, Napier grass, Bt cotton + Greengram (1:2)—Maize, Sheep (5 + 1); M6: Guava, Bt cotton + Greengram (1:2)—Maize, Rice–Groundnut, Poultry; M7: Rice–Groundnut, Pigeonpea + Sweetcorn (1:3)—Bajra, Pigeonpea + Maize (1:3)—Sunhemp; Napier grass, Hedge lucerne, Poultry (100), Sheep (5 + 1). Based on a 2-year average, the Model M7 system produced 9980 Rice Grain Equivalent Yield(RGEY)kg of output per acre, with gross and net returns of ₹210,439 and ₹124,953 respectively, and recovered a B:C ratio of 2.46. It has recorded highest sustainable yield index (SYI) of 0.673 and value index of 0.772 with the lowest water footprint of 259.0 L/kg. This study reveals that adopting an integrated farming system is the optimal approach for effectively combining productive, financially rewarding, and diversified enterprises within a single acre of land.d. This system should be recommended for maximum benefits to smallto small and marginal farmers in Telangana's southern hills and plateau.

Abstract A magnetic pomegranate peels activated carbon (MG-PPAC) nanocomposite (23.46–26.75 nm) was prepared as an effective adsorbent for Acid Orange 7 (AO7) dye removal from wastewater. The effects of impregnation ratio and activation temperatures (600–900 °C) on the specific surface area and pore morphology were studied. BET, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, XRD and VSM are considered the synthesized composite MG-PPAC. The prepared magnetic composite at 700 °C activation temperature and impregnation ratio 1/2 (peels/ZnCl2) exhibited 513.34 m2/g surface area, 0.4025 cm3/g volume of the total pores, and 3.1364 nm mean diameter of the pores. The magnetization saturation, remanence and coercivity of the MG-PPA composite were 14.116 emu/g, 0.50685 emu/g, and 19.705 G, respectively. Also, the composite MG-PPAC was in a super-paramagnetic state at room temperature and could be gathered within 5 S (less than 5 S) with an external magnetic field. The impact of pH, adsorbent dose, initial concentration of adsorbate (AO7 dye), and time of contact have been studied to optimize the removal process. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were used to investigate MG-PPAC adsorption behavior for AO7 dye. Applicability of the Langmuir isotherm model demonstrates a monolayer adsorption AO7 dye removal process, and the maximum monolayer capacity (Q m ) attained from linear solvation of LIM is 322.58 mg/g. Furthermore, the highest removal was 99.53% at pH 2.25. Also, the adsorption process was tested using like pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, film diffusion, and Elovich models. The pseudo-second-order model is well-fitted to the operational data of AO7 dye removal.

Abstract Background Despite a significant rise in cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), data are scarce regarding the quality of care provided, particularly for women. Methods This is a prospective observational, cross-sectional study. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients presented to the Cardiology Department at Tanta University, Egypt, between September 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023, were enrolled. The study assessed gender disparities by comparing men and women regarding presentation, management, and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) occurrence during hospitalization and 30 days after discharge. Results A total of 400 ACS patients were included, with 29.5% being women. Women were comparatively older (59 ± 9 years vs. 55 ± 13 years), with a significantly higher prevalence of hypertension (70.3% vs. 47.5%) and diabetes (55% vs. 36.8%). Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (Non-STEMI) was more common in women (35.29% vs. 21%). Dyspnea was expressed by 34.4% of women (vs. 21.35% of men). Women were hospitalized later (9.29 h vs. 6.74 h). In-hospital outcomes were poorer for women with worse NYHA classes III and IV. Additionally, the odds ratio (OR) for in-hospital cardiac mortality was 0.303 (95% CI 0.103–0.893) for women compared to men. However, a one-month follow-up for MACE post-hospital discharge did not indicate significant gender differences. Conclusions The current study suggests that women with ACS in Egypt exhibit a higher risk profile for CVD compared to men and tend to present later with atypical symptoms. Women additionally experience poorer in-hospital MACE and higher cardiac mortality. Therefore, increasing awareness about ACS syndrome and eliminating obstacles that delay hospital admission are imperative.

Abstract Background Sciatic nerve repair becomes a focus of research in neurological aspect to restore the normal physical ability of the animal to stand and walk. Tissue engineered nerve grafts (TENGs) provide a promising alternative therapy for regeneration of large gap defects. The present study investigates the regenerative capacity of PRP, ADSCs, and PRP mixed ADSCs on a long sciatic nerve defect (40-mm) bridged by a polyglycolic polypropylene (PGA-PRL) mesh which acts as a neural scaffold. Materials and methods The study was conducted on 12 adult male mongrel dogs that were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group I (scaffold group); where the sciatic defect was bridged by a (PGA-PRL) mesh only while the mesh was injected with ADSCs in Group II (ADSCs group), PRP in Group III (PRP group). Mixture of PRP and ADSCs was allocated in Group IV (PRP + ADSCs group). Monthly, all animals were monitored for improvement in their gait and a numerical lameness score was recorded for all groups. 6 months-post surgery, the structural and functional recovery of sciatic nerve was evaluated electrophysiologically, and on the level of gene expression, and both sciatic nerve and the gastrocnemius muscle were evaluated morphometrically, histopathologically. Results Numerical lameness score showed improvement in the motor activities of both Group II and Group III followed by Group IV and the scaffold group showed mild improvement even after 6 months. Histopathologically, all treated groups showed axonal sprouting and numerous regenerated fascicles with obvious angiogenesis in proximal cut, and distal portion where Group IV exhibited a significant remyelination with the MCOOL technique. The regenerative ratio of gastrocnemius muscle was 23.81%, 56.68%, 52.06% and 40.69% for Group I, II, III and IV; respectively. The expression of NGF showed significant up regulation in the proximal portion for both Group III and Group IV (P ≤ 0.0001) while Group II showed no significant difference. PDGF-A, and VEGF expressions were up-regulated in Group II, III, and IV whereas Group I showed significant down-regulation for NGF, PDGF-A, and VEGF (P ≤ 0.0001). Conclusion ADSCs have a great role in restoring the damaged nerve fibers by secreting several types of growth factors like NGF that have a proliferative effect on Schwann cells and their migration. In addition, PRP therapy potentiates the effect of ADSCs by synthesis another growth factors such as PDGF-A, VEGF, NGF for better healing of large sciatic gap defects.

Abstract Invasive alien species implications in ecological threats are attributed to their unique characteristics that are linked to their invasion. Veronica persica (Plantaginaceae family) is an alien weed species in Egypt. Regardless of its widespread globally in various regions, the growth traits and behavior of V. persica remain poorly understood. The comprehensive analysis, reveals the optimal germination (Gmax) was detected at 10/20 °C, 15/20 °C, and 20/25 °C at the moderate temperature regimes. The rapid germination rate (G rate) peaked at 10/20 °C regime, with a rate of 0.376 per day. Furthermore, under stress conditions, V. persica has 50% germination inhibition (G50) and 50% of growth inhibition occurred at − 0.91 MPa and 0.75 MPa of osmotic pressure and 3225.81 ppm and 2677.1 ppm of salt stress (NaCl) respectively. The germination ranged from 6 to 9 pH, with the highest germination percentage occurring at a pH of 7 & 8, reaching 88.75% compared to the control group. There is a strong interaction effect between habitats and plant stages, the plant stages and habitats have significant effects (p ≤ 0.00) on V. persica growth. There was high and moderate plasticity in the response of morphological and growth features between stages. During the seedling-juvenile interval and the juvenile-flowering stages, respectively, there was a noticeable increase in both Relative Growth Rate and Net Assimilation Rate. Demographic surveys identified approximately 24 species across 11 families associated with V. persica in invaded areas. The Sorenson indices of qualitative index exhibited high similarity values in the invaded sites by (82.35%) compared to (72.72%) in non-invaded sites. However, interactions with native communities were reflected in lower richness, diversity, and evenness, displaying slightly higher Simpson index 1 (λ) values compared to invaded and non-invaded sites (0.043 and 0.0290) vs. (0.0207 and 0.268), in rangelands and F. carica orchards respectively. These results emphasize the substantially higher adaptability of V. persica to variable environmental conditions and abilities to invade a new community. This knowledge about invasive V. persica weeds germination and growth is itemized as the consistent predictive base for future invasion and informs strategic management priorities.

Abstract The ecotoxicological consequences of azoxystrobin on land snails have not yet been addressed. Therefore, the present study aims to provide novel data on the threat of a commercial grade azoxystrobin (AMISTAR) at two environmentally relevant concentrations (0.3 µg/ml) and tenfold (3 µg/ml) on the model species, Theba pisana by physiological, biochemical, and histopathological markers for 28 days. Our results showed a reduction in animal food consumption and growth due to exposure to both azoxystrobin concentrations. It also induced oxidative stress and led to a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels after 7 days of exposure, while the opposite effect occurred after 28 days. Except for the 7-day exposure, all treated snails had significantly reduced glutathione (GSH) content and increased catalase (CAT) activity at all-time intervals. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities, and protein content (PC) were elevated in treated snails at all-time intervals. Moreover, alterations in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity between a decrease and an increase were noticed. Additionally, azoxystrobin exerted changes in T. pisana hepatopancreas architecture. Our study suggests that azoxystrobin may have negative ecological consequences for T. pisana and highlights its potential risks to the natural environment.

Abstract Background Hair characterization is critical for determining animal individuality throughout life. This study aimed to assess the morphological features of dromedary camel hair in relation to age. Materials and methods Hair samples were obtained from the camel humps of 30 dromedary camels separated into three groups: G1 (n:10) aged one-year, G2 (n:10) aged 3–5 years, and G3 (n:10) at the age of 8–10 years. The hair was examined using light microscopy, SEM, and SEM-EDX. Results The Maghrebi camel had varied medulla patterns and structures across the ages. In the G1 group 75% had continuous medulla patterns and amorphous medulla structures, compared to 70% in G2, and 90% in G3. The medulla index increased with age, rising from 0.3 to 0.77%. The shaft width grew in size from G1 to G2, then fell to approximately one-third of the G2 size at G3. The cortex and cuticle widths were also determined by age, and they increased in the G1 compared to G3 camels. The shape of the cuticle scales in G1 camels was wavy, like mountain tops with irregular edges, within G2 camels the scales were particularly long, oval-shaped scales with smooth, wavy borders. The scales of the older G3 camels were quite long and rectangular. SEM-EDX spectra recognized carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, calcium, aluminum, silicon, and potassium at the medulla and cortex. Sulfur levels were highest in the G2 samples but lowest in the G1 samples. Conclusion The dromedary camel’s hair structure and mineral content, particularly carbon and nitrogen, differed as camels aged.
