Abstract

Monitoring asset conditions is a crucial factor in building efficient transportation asset management. Because of substantial advances in image processing, traditional manual classification has been largely replaced by semi-automatic/automatic techniques. As a result, automated asset detection and classification techniques are required. This paper proposes a methodology to detect and classify roadway pavement cracks using the well-known You Only Look Once (YOLO) version five (YOLOv5) and version 8 (YOLOv8) algorithms. Experimental results indicated that the precision of pavement crack detection reaches up to 67.3% under different illumination conditions and image sizes. The findings of this study can assist highway agencies in accurately detecting and classifying asset conditions under different illumination conditions. This will reduce the cost and time that are associated with manual inspection, which can greatly reduce the cost of highway asset maintenance.

Abstract

Roadway signs detection and recognition is an essential element in the Advanced Driving Assistant Systems (ADAS). Several artificial intelligence methods have been used widely among of them YOLOv5 and YOLOv8. In this paper, we used a modified YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 to detect and classify different roadway signs under different illumination conditions. Experimental results indicated that for the YOLOv8 model, varying the number of epochs and batch size yields consistent MAP50 scores, ranging from 94.6% to 97.1% on the testing set. The YOLOv5 model demonstrates competitive performance, with MAP50 scores ranging from 92.4% to 96.9%. These results suggest that both models perform well across different training setups, with YOLOv8 generally achieving slightly higher MAP50 scores. These findings suggest that both models can perform well under different training setups, offering valuable insights for practitioners seeking reliable and adaptable solutions in object detection applications.

Abstract

The molecular origins of homochirality on Earth is not understood well, particularly how enantiomerically enriched molecules of astrobiological significance like sugars and amino acids might have been synthesized on icy grains in space preceding their delivery to Earth. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) identified in carbonaceous chondrites could have been processed in molecular clouds by circularly polarized light prior to the depletion of enantiomerically enriched helicenes onto carbonaceous grains resulting in chiral islands. However, the fundamental low temperature reaction mechanisms leading to racemic helicenes are still unknown. Here, by exploiting synchrotron based molecular beam photoionization mass spectrometry combined with electronic structure calculations, we provide compelling testimony on barrierless, low temperature pathways leading to racemates of [5] and [6]helicene. Astrochemical modeling advocates that gas-phase reactions in molecular clouds lead to racemates of helicenes suggesting a pathway for future astronomical observation and providing a fundamental understanding for the origin of homochirality on early Earth.

Abstract

Fullerenes (C60, C70) detected in planetary nebulae and carbonaceous chondrites have been implicated to play a key role in the astrochemical evolution of the interstellar medium. However, the formation mechanism of even their simplest molecular building block-the corannulene molecule (C20H10)-has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate via a combined molecular beams and ab initio investigation that corannulene can be synthesized in the gas phase through the reactions of 7-fluoranthenyl (C16H9˙) and benzo[ghi]fluoranthen-5-yl (C18H9˙) radicals with acetylene (C2H2) mimicking conditions in carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes. This reaction sequence reveals a reaction class in which a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) radical undergoes ring expansion while simultaneously forming an out-of-plane carbon backbone central to 3D nanostructures such as buckybowls and buckyballs. These fundamental reaction mechanisms are critical in facilitating an intimate understanding of the origin and evolution of the molecular universe and, in particular, of carbon in our galaxy.

Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent the link between resonance-stabilized free radicals and carbonaceous nanoparticles generated in incomplete combustion processes and in circumstellar envelopes of carbon rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Although these PAHs resemble building blocks of complex carbonaceous nanostructures, their fundamental formation mechanisms have remained elusive. By exploring these reaction mechanisms of the phenyl radical with biphenyl/naphthalene theoretically and experimentally, we provide compelling evidence on a novel phenyl-addition/dehydrocyclization (PAC) pathway leading to prototype PAHs: triphenylene and fluoranthene. PAC operates efficiently at high temperatures leading through rapid molecular mass growth processes to complex aromatic structures, which are difficult to synthesize by traditional pathways such as hydrogen-abstraction/acetylene-addition. The elucidation of the fundamental reactions leading to PAHs is necessary to facilitate an understanding of the origin and evolution of the molecular universe and of carbon in our galaxy.

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by persistent inflammation of the synovial joints, leading to cartilage and bone destruction. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of specific microRNAs (miRNAs) as potential biomarkers for RA. The study was conducted on 60 patients with RA disease along with 20 control participants. Comprehensive analysis of patient data, encompassing serological, hematological, and biochemical markers, revealed significantly elevated levels of miR-99b-5p, miR-101-3p, and miR-431-5p in RA patients compared to healthy controls. Among these, miR-101-3p demonstrated the highest diagnostic accuracy, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.873. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of RA pathogenesis and suggest that miR-101-3p may serve as a valuable biomarker for early disease detection and potentially improved patient management. Abstract

Globally, liver cancer ranks as the sixth most frequent malignancy cancer. The importance of early detection is undeniable, as liver cancer is the fifth most common disease in men and the ninth most common cancer in women. Recent advances in imaging, biomarker discovery, and genetic profiling have greatly enhanced the ability to diagnose liver cancer. Early identification is vital since liver cancer is often asymptomatic, making diagnosis difficult. Imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and ultrasonography can be used to identify liver cancer once a sample of liver tissue is taken. In recent research, reliable detection of liver cancer with minimal computing computational complexity and time has remained a serious difficulty. This paper employs the DenseNet model to enhance the detection of liver nodules with tumors by segmenting them using UNet and VGG using Fastai (UVF) in CT images. Its dense interconnections distinguish the DenseNet between layers. These dense connections facilitate the propagation of gradients and the flow of information throughout the network, thereby enhancing the efficacy and performance of training. DenseNet's architecture combines dense blocks, bottleneck layers, and transition layers, allowing it to achieve a compromise between expressiveness and computing efficiency. Finally, the 3D liver nodular models were created using a ray-casting volume rendering approach. Compared to other state-of-the-art deep neural networks, it is suitable for clinical applications to assist doctors in diagnosing liver cancer. The proposed approach was tested on a 3Dircadb dataset. According to experiments, UVF segmentation on the 3Dircadb dataset is 97.9% accurate. According to the study, the DenseNet and UVF segment liver cancer better than prior methods. Abstract

Background: The complex developmental disease known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is marked by impaired social interaction, communication, in addition to decreased bone mineral density (BMD). Physical therapy can be one of the complementary therapies for autistic children. Purpose of the Study: To inspect the efficacy of group exercise program on social skills and BMD in children with ASD. Patients and Methods: Thirty children diagnosed with mild ASD were included. They were randomized into two groups. Group A (control) was given calcium supplement, vitamin D, and speech therapy. Group B (study) was given the same program of the control group A in addition to group exercise program, which was conducted for conducted for 60 minutes, three sessions per week. All participants in both groups underwent treatment program for successive three months. They were assessed by The Autism Social Skills Profile (ASSP) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) pre and post intervention. Results: The study group experienced a significant rise in ASSP after treatment in comparison with before treatment, whereas the control group didn't show any significant change. The study group and control group experienced a significant rise in BMD after treatment in comparison with before treatment. The study group exhibited a statistically significant enhancement in comparison with the control group across all assessed variables after treatment. Conclusion: From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that the group exercise program has beneficial impacts on improving social interaction and BMD in children suffering from ASD. Abstract

Background and Objectives: Mortality and illness due to COVID-19 have been linked to a condition known as cytokine release syndrome (CRS) that is characterized by excessive production of inflammatory cytokines, particularly interleukin-6 (IL-6). Tocilizumab (TCZ), a recent IL-6 antagonist, has been redeployed as adjunctive treatment for CRS remission in COVID-19 patients. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of Tocilizumab on patients' survival and the length of stay in hospitalized COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Methods: Between January 2021 and June 2021, a multicenter retrospective cohort study was carried out in six tertiary care hospitals in Egypt's governorate of Giza. Based on the use of TCZ during ICU stay, eligible patients were divided into two groups (control vs. TCZ). In-hospital mortality was the main outcome. Results: A total of 740 patient data records were included in the analysis, where 630 patients followed the routine COVID-19 protocol, while 110 patients received TCZ, need to different respiratory support after hospitalization, and inflammatory mediators such as C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) showed a statistically significant difference between the TCZ group and the control group. Regarding the primary outcome (discharged alive or death) and neither the secondary outcome (length of hospital stay), there is no statistically significant difference between patients treated with TCZ and the control group. Conclusions: Our cohort of patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 did not assert a reduction in the risk of mortality or the length of stay (LOS) after TCZ administration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
