In contemporary discussions, there is growing debate over the procedural methods employed by police in obtaining evidence from suspects while in custody. A key point of contention is whether evidence acquired through illegal means should be admitted in court, with some arguing that its admission violates the suspect's right to a fair trial, while others contend that such evidence is crucial for proving the case. The law is currently ambiguous on this issue. According to the Oxford Legal Dictionary, illegally obtained evidence is defined as evidence acquired through methods that contravene legal procedures. Importantly, the distinction between evidence obtained illegally and confessions made while in police custody is critical, as Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act 1950 explicitly prohibits the admission of confessions made under such circumstances. This article aims to explore the status of illegally obtained evidence and assess whether it should be admitted or excluded by the courts when the evidence is obtained from a suspect in police custody.

Background: Medication non-adherence is a significant barrier to optimal treatment goals. The study explores the association between subjective well-being (SWB) and medication adherence among Lebanese individuals with multiple chronic diseases and identifies additional factors that may influence adherence in this population. Methods: An exploratory, cross-sectional study was conducted for three months at six community pharmacies. Adherence was assessed using the Adherence to Refills and Medication Scale Arabic Lebanese Version (ARMS-A). The SWB was measured using the Arabic Scale of Happiness (ASH), Love of Life Scale (LLS), Arab Hope Scale (AHS), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Spearmen's Rho correlation analyzed the association between ARMS-A and SWB constructs. Binary logistic regression identified predictors of adherence among individuals with chronic diseases and on multiple chronic medications. Results: Of 400 participants, 106 (26.5 %) with a 95 % CI, 0.22–0.31, were adherent. Lower medication adherence (reflected in higher ARMS-A scores) was associated with lower SWB (p = 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that lower education (OR=2.21, 95 % CI, 1.01–4.81), lack of a specific diet (OR = 1.64, 95 % CI, 1.01–2.69), and frequent hospital and/or emergency visits (OR=3.29, 95 % CI, 1.75–6.17 for 2 visits; OR = 2.71, 95 % CI, 1.43–5.14 for ≥3 visits) significantly increased the odds of non-adherence to chronic treatment. However, higher income (OR = 0.06, 95 % CI, 0.01–0.38), healthcare provider occupation (OR = 0.42, 95 % CI, 0.21–0.48), and having diabetes mellitus (OR = 0.59, 95 % CI, 0.36–0.96) correlated with better adherence. Conclusion: A significant portion of participants failed to adhere to their prescribed chronic medications, influenced by multicomplex socioeconomic, psychological, and health-related factors. These findings demonstrate the need for culturally-tailored, pharmacist-led interventions to improve medication adherence and overall health outcomes.

The term "harmonization," derived from "harmony," encompasses various meanings. In the context of this discussion, it refers to the willingness and openness to recognize, acknowledge, adopt, or accept elements produced by man-made laws, modern secular traditions, customs, cultures, and institutions that are perceived to align with or not contradict the worldview, principles, values, teachings, and norms of Islam. Therefore, the conceptual approach to harmonizing legal knowledge and education is a process of actualizing divine imperatives within the legal sphere. Legal harmonization is a fundamental concept in comparative law that has gained prominence on both international and national agendas over the past decade. In Malaysia, numerous efforts have been made to identify similarities among legal rules across different jurisdictions; however, these efforts have faced challenges due to a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the nature and scope of harmonization. This article examines various dimensions of harmonization, treating it as a legal phenomenon rather than merely a process of drafting similar rules. A thorough understanding of harmonization as a legal phenomenon can enhance the evaluation of implementation processes and inform the formulation of new legal initiatives.

The extended use of ethambutol beyond 2 months for treating tuberculosis has increased risk of optic neuropathy. We performed a systematic review of studies evaluating optic neuropathy in extended ethambutol use since 2010 and compared the outcome with a similar systematic review (1965–2010) by Ezer et al. Literature search was conducted in PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Main outcome measures were visual acuity, color vision, visual field defects, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual evoked potential (VEP). The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists were used for quality assessment. Twelve studies were selected (out of 639 studies) for analysis of ethambutol optic neuropathy. Visual acuity improvement after stopping ethambutol was statistically significant. Similar improvement was not noted for other outcome measures. On comparing the results of this review with those by Ezer et al., significant improvement was noted in visual acuity, color vision, and visual field defects. Moreover, more patients reported increased optic nerve toxicity, color vision defects, and visual field defects in the present review. Hence, we conclude that the extended use of ethambutol beyond 2 months results in significant optic nerve toxicity. Further randomized controlled trials with different populations are needed to understand the magnitude of this issue.

A new adaptive frequency selective surface (AFSS) has been presented for electromagnetic (EM) shielding applications. Passive EM shields lack reconfigurability which severely limits their application. Moreover, active EM shields involving PIN diodes and other active elements consume power all the time. This paper incorporates a novel adaptive approach with frequency selective surface (FSS) to create a smart environment. The unit cell of the designed FSS has the shape of an octagon loop; each loop includes a pin diode at 180° intervals. An envelope detector has been used to trigger the microcontroller whenever an incident RF signal has been detected. The PIN diodes are switched ON or OFF automatically based on the requirements using a microcontroller to save power. When the PIN diodes are OFF, the FSS is in the shielding mode and when they are ON it is in the transmission mode. A prototype has been built for measurements. A good agreement between theory and experiment has been observed. The proposed AFSS can also be programmed as a time-based event and remote-controlled for on-demand EM wave shielding applications.

In civil disputes, parties often seek to resolve their issues outside of court using alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods, such as negotiation. If negotiations fail, the matter may be brought to court. Under section 23 of the Malaysian Evidence Act 1950, statements made during negotiations that are marked "without prejudice" are generally considered privileged and inadmissible in court. This raises questions about whether the current legal framework adequately addresses the applicability of the "without prejudice" privilege. Is this rule absolute, or are there exceptions that limit its scope? This paper aims to explore these issues, evaluating whether legal reforms and new mechanisms are needed to adapt the "without prejudice" privilege to contemporary legal challenges.

Since issues of child abuse and other crimes against children have been brought to the public's attention through the media, this article considers to highlight one of the issues relating to the protection of child. The issue of the laws protecting child witnesses in giving evidence will come into the discussion. This paper considers the issue of corroboration of the child witness in the aspects of sworn and unsworn statements to determine whether the evidence given by children will be relevant and admissible in Courts. In tackling the issues, the research methodology applied by the authors is by analyzing and evaluating the decided cases and studying the substantive laws procedure in protecting child witnesses in giving testimony in Courts. The expectation findings of this paper are to harmonize between Malaysian and Islamic law relating to the protection of child witnesses in giving evidence in the court of law. After having observed the conflicts or the problems that had stem out of the current laws and procedures governing child witnesses as to the remedies, the final part of the article proposed some solutions and recommendations from the Islamic point of view.

Textile antennas are currently being researched and developed so that they can be integrated into clothing. In this paper, two textile antennas with cotton and silk substrate are presented. The antennas operate at GPS L1 frequency, which is 1.575 GHz. This paper discusses the effect of antenna parameters on free space and on-body conditions, and the effect of antenna bending. Based on simulation and measurement results, the parameter values obtained indicate that the antenna can operate properly at a frequency of 1.575 GHz and is safe to use on the body.

Recently, the supply of electrical energy from sustainable and renewable energies such as mechanical, thermal and solar energy has been expanded. Piezoelectric materials are one of the best alternatives for supplying electrical energy from the mechanical energy available in nature such as mechanical force, vibration and human body movements. The applications for piezoelectric energy harvester include low power electronics or wireless sensing at relatively lower power levels (nW to mW) with an aim to reduce a reliance on batteries or electrical power through cables and realize fully autonomous and self-powered systems. In fact, the piezoelectric property is the property of a special material that enables the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. Piezoelectric property was discovered in ceramics for the first time. However, because of the need to piezoelectric materials with large surfaces and high flexibility in many applications, and the relatively low price and simple manufacturing technology of polymers in comparison with ceramics, polymers are used extensively. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a semicrystalline polymer with ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. It has five distinctive configurations. β-phase is a polar phase showing significant piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity due to the highest dipolar moment and spontaneous polarization. In this review, PVDF polymer is introduced and then the different strategies for identification and quantification of PVDF phases are summarized. Finally, various methods including stretching, high pressure, ultra-fast cooling, melt quenching, using polar solvents, poling, copolymerization, polymer blending, electrospinning and filler addition such as carbon nanotube, clay, metals and metal salts, ceramics and etc., have been discussed for β-phase enhancement.

In this article, a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (RDRA) with circularly polarized (CP) response is presented for 5G NR (New Radio) Sub-6 GHz band applications. A uniquely shaped conformal metal feeding strip is proposed to excite the RDRA in higher-order mode for high gain utilization. By using the proposed feeding mechanism, the degenerate mode pair of the first higher-order, i.e., TEδ13x at 4.13 GHz and TE1δ3y, at 4.52 GHz is excited to achieve a circularly polarized response. A circular polarization over a bandwidth of ~10%, in conjunction with a wide impedance matching over a bandwidth of ~17%, were attained by the antenna. The CP antenna proposed offers a useful gain of ~6.2 dBic. The achieved CP bandwidth of the RDRA is good enough to cover the targeted 5G NR bands around 4.4–4.8 GHz, such as n79. The proposed antenna configuration is modelled and optimized using computer simulation technology (CST). A prototype was built to confirm (validate) the performance estimated through simulation. A good agreement was observed between simulated and measured results.

Perbezaan pemikiran, kefahaman dan interpretasi undang-undang serta kesan daripada perkahwinan di bawah umur membawa kepada perbahasan dalam kalangan masyarakat di Malaysia. Meskipun wujud had umur minimum yang diperuntukkan, namun undang-undang tersebut dilihat tidak relevan untuk diaplikasikan pada masa kini merujuk kepada implikasi perkahwinan di bawah umur yang lebih memberi kemudaratan kepada kanak-kanak terutamanya dari sudut kesihatan dan pendidikan. Jesteru itu, artikel ini akan membincangkan kedudukan perkahwinan kanak-kanak menurut perspektif Syariah dan perundangan di Malaysia. Artikel ini turut membincangkan kedudukan perkahwinan kanak-kanak di bawah Matlamat Pembangunan Mampan (SDGs) serta implikasi perkahwinan tersebut kepada diri kanak-kanak dari sudut hak kesihatan dan pendidikan. Metodologi kajian kualitatif iaitu kajian perpustakaan digunakan dengan menganalisis dokumen primer dan sekunder seperti kitab turath, Akta dan Enakmen Negeri-Negeri serta penulisan akademik di dalam jurnal. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa wujudnya peruntukan berkaitan perkahwinan kanak-kanak di bawah umur namun perincian secara jelas dan spesifik mengenai alasan dan faktor yang perlu diambil kira dalam memberikan kebenaran bagi perkahwinan tersebut tidak dinyatakan. Selain itu, artikel ini juga mendapati wujudnya implikasi negatif terhadap hak kesihatan dan hak pendidikan kanak-kanak hasil perkahwinan di bawah umur. Maka, artikel ini mencadangkan supaya pemurnian peruntukan sedia ada dan peningkatan kesedaran masyarakat tentang perkahwinan di bawah umur melalui pendidikan perlu di lakukan demi menjaga kemaslahatan kanak-kanak.

A rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) has been excited using a unique conformal H-shaped metal strip. Using this excitation, the degenerate mode pair of first higher orderTEδ13x and TE1δ3y has been excited for bandwidth improvement and high gain. A broadband circular polarization (CP) over a bandwidth of ~20% (3.67-4.4 GHz) in conjunction with a wide impedance-matching bandwidth of ~27.7% (3.67-4.73 GHz) has been achieved. A CP beamwidth of 89° has been offered by the antenna in Φ = 0° plane and ~32° in Φ = 90° plane. A high gain of ~6.8 dBic has been provided by the antenna, which is a significant improvement to those circularly polarized rectangular DRAs reported in the literature for similar applications. This broad CP bandwidth and beamwidth can be considerably beneficial for the worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and satellite applications. Furthermore, the proposed antenna has been fabricated to validate the simulated results. The measured results have been observed to agree well with the simulated results.

In this paper, a novel wideband circularly polarized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) has been proposed for worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) applications. The mutual coupling (MC) between closely placed DRA units at 0.5λ has been significantly reduced by using a new hybrid technique. The exclusive features of the proposed MIMO antenna include wide impedance matching bandwidth (BW), broadband circular polarization (CP), and suppressed MC between the radiating elements. The first step of hybrid technique is the employment of parasitic patch at an optimized distance beside the conformal metal strip of the two identical rectangular DRAs in order to generate CP wave along with a wide impedance matching BW over the same frequency range. In the final step, the MC is suppressed significantly along with the broadband CP by placing the DRAs diagonally at an optimized position. The proposed MIMO antenna is the hybrid of the parasitic patch and the diagonal position of radiating elements. The CP BW offered by the proposed antenna is ~20.82% (3.58-4.40 GHz) in conjunction with an impedance-matching BW of ~38.51% (3.50-4.95 GHz). Moreover, MC less than -28 dB is achieved over the entire band and -26 dB at 3.89 GHz (minimum of the AR) through the hybrid technique. The prototype of the proposed antenna geometry is fabricated and measured. A good agreement has been attained between the simulated and measured results.

A wideband circularly polarized rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) fed by single feeding mechanism has been studied theoretically and experimentally. The study has been carried out to find out the effect on different antenna parameters when a parasitic strip is attached to the wall beside the conformal metallic feed. The DRA is excited by an E-shaped metal strip. The novel feed produces a narrow impedance matching |S11|

The Position and Application of Islamic Legal Maxims (Qawaaid Al-Fiqhiyyah) in the Law of Evidence (Turuq Al-Hukmiyyah) Islamic legal maxims had always held and will continue to hold a special position in jurisprudence. Jurists of all schools generally accept legal maxims as a basis of coming up with Shariah opinions. This is especially true if these maxims are based on the Holy Quran and the Prophetic traditions. Legal maxims can be used as evidence in extracting rules if it is based on the Holy Quran and the Sunnah because its use is an extension of the original proof, and thus, this article will relate some of the important legal maxims relating to the law of evidence. Abstract The objectives of the professional agencies must embody provisions that promote good governance and embrace values of integrity and accountability and seek support from the public and the government of the day to provide an independent view on all matters. The universal truth is that everything should be done in the public good. Professionals form the backbone of human infrastructure in any economy, politics, social and legal growth. Their contributions through professional performance enhance the good delivery system that facilitates policies making and management for public sector. They provide the skills and talent in balancing the pursuits of maximization of services. The expression “good governance” has been constantly used lately in both public sector as well as private sector in Malaysia. In the context of a private body, it should be within the framework of the statute, which governs the body and also its constitution. In the public sector, it means that the administrators should act professionally and not to abuse or misuse the power or authority given to them. They are regarded as the trustees of the public at large. The scope of this article is on good public governance in the public sector or to be exact, good governmental administration as interpreted by the judiciary especially through its judicial review power and Islamic Perspective based on the principles of Maqasid As Shariah (Objectives of Islamic Law). Adversarial justice system seems to focus on punishing the sexual offender without adequately repositioning sexual crimes victims. There is the need to redefine the role of sexual crime victims by giving them a voice in outcome of judicial process through alternative justice models. Although the Criminal Procedure Code recognises the discretionary powers of the court to grant compensation, the court order the offenders to pay restitution to the victim. This article seeks to examine the victim compensation under criminal justice administration and recommend a legal framework for alternative justice models for sexual crimes offences. The article will recommend mechanisms for alternative justice suitable for the administration of justice in Malaysia. The alternative justice response is restorative justice, model which will give effect through compensation or restitution. It is also proposed for the establishment of the Victim Compensation Scheme (VCS) to be set up and administered under the Criminal Procedure Code.

In Asia, Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) is commonly found in paddy fields and irrigation systems. Due to its habitat, Climbing perch is exposed to toxic pesticides used in paddy fields such as metaldehyde which is one of the most widely used molluscicide. This study aims to determine the acute toxicity Lethal Concentration50 (LC50) of metaldehyde and its effect on the behaviour and physical changes of the Climbing perch. The fish mortality responses to six different metaldehyde concentrations ranging from 180 to 330 mg/L were investigated. The 96-h LC50 values were determined and analysed using three different analysis methods which is arithmetic, logarithmic and probit graphic. The LC50 values obtained in this study were 239, 234 and 232 mg/L, respectively. After 96-h of exposure to metaldehyde, the fish showed a series of abnormal behavioural response in all cases: imbalance position, and restlessness of movement. The LC50 values show that metaldehyde is moderately toxic to the Climbing perch indicating that metaldehyde is not destructive to Climbing perch. However, long term exposure of aquatic organisms to the metaldehyde means a continuous health risk for the fish population as they are more vulnerable and it is on high risk for human to consume this toxicated fishes.

Objectives. To assess the impact of live interactive telecardiology on diagnosis and disease management, patients’ quality of life, and time- and cost-savings. Methods. All consecutive patients who attended or were referred to the teleclinics for suspected cardiac problems in two hospitals in remote areas of Jordan during the study period were included in the study. Patients were interviewed for relevant information and their quality of life was assessed during the first visit and 8 weeks after the last visit. Results. A total of 76 patients were included in this study. Final diagnosis and treatment plan were established as part of the telecardiology consultations in 71.1% and 77.3% of patients, respectively. Patients’ travel was avoided for 38 (50.0%) who were managed locally. The majority of patients perceived that the visit to the telecardiology clinic results in less travel time (96.1%), less waiting time (98.1%), and lower cost (100.0%). Telecardiology consultations resulted in an improvement in the quality of life after two months of the first visit. Conclusions. Telecardiology care in remote areas of Jordan would improve the access to health care, help to reach proper diagnosis and establish the treatment plan, and improve the quality of life.

The complex and diverse nature of coal mining sites, including different landforms and working conditions, presents challenges for rehabilitation efforts. To address this, we conducted a comprehensive experimental study focusing on microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) remediation, considering the fracture characteristics of coal mining sites. The MICP-restored samples were subjected to confined/unconfined compressive strength, uniaxial/triaxial permeability, and souring tests to assess their restoration efficacy. The results showed that under similar mining conditions, the average depth of parallel fractures was 0.185 m for loess ridges, 0.16 m for the valley, and 0.146 m for the blown-sand region, while the average depth for boundary fractures was 0.411 m for loess ridges, 0.178 m for the valley, and 0.268 m for the blown-sand region. Notably, parallel fractures showed negligible filling in all landforms, whereas boundary fractures in the blown-sand region were completely filled with wind-deposited sand. The valley landform was filled with alluvium and wind-deposited sand, whereas the loess landform was filled with wind-deposited sand and loess. MICP-restored soil samples in all landforms achieved a strength comparable to remolded fracture-free soil samples. Across all landforms, the maximum permeability coefficient of MICP-restored soil samples closely matched that of remolded fracture-free soil samples. Under similar topographic and rainfall conditions MICP restorations scoured 31.3 g on blown-sand region, 19.3 g on loess ridges, and 17.6 g on valleys. In this study, the association between the rs2200733 SNP and AFib was examined in the Jordanian population. Methods: The study included 450 subjects (274 controls and 176 patients with AFib). Patients were recruited from King Abdullah University Hospital based on the European Society of Cardiology criteria. The rs2200733 SNP was genotyped using restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction (RFLP-PCR) technique. Results: The mutant T allele of the rs2200733 SNP was common in the studied population with a frequency of 19%. The T allele and CT/TT genotypes were prevalent among patients with AFib compared with the controls (P< 0.05, OR [CI]: 1.65 [1.12– 2.43]). In addition, body mass index, diabetes, and hypertension were found to be associated with AFib risk. Conclusion: The rs2200733 SNP was associated with AFib among Jordanian patients. The mutant T allele of the rs2200733 SNP might increase the risk of AFib. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aimed at exploring food related cultural norms that influence rural mothers' food selection for their primary school aged children (aged 4-7 years). Design/methodology/approach: This is a qualitative study conducted in northern parts of Balochistan province of Pakistan. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) was applied as the theoretical framework of the study. Within a qualitative research method four focused group interviews with 30 rural mothers were employed to generate data. Findings: The study found that mothers' food selection for their children was heavily influenced by certain cultural norms that have become taboos with the passage of time. It is evident through findings that subjective norms have a greater influence on mothers' behaviour than their attitude and perceived behavioural control (PBC). Originality/value: We ensure originality of this research paper as fewer researches have been conducted to further elaborate the link between socio-cultural norms and food selection. In particular, the influence of this close relationship on child health has been of limited consideration in a developing context. This paper has neither been published elsewhere, nor it is currently under consideration for publication in any other journal.
