1. Analysis of Graduates Performance Based on Programme Educational Objective Assessment for an Electrical Engineering Degree

Abstract

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) are specific goals that are aligned with the vision and mission of an institution of higher learning. The PEOs describe the expected achievements of the graduates in their career and professional accomplishment after graduation. At Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam, the PEOs of undergraduate programmes are particularly designed to ensure that the graduates are well-equipped with a broad foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge in various electrical engineering areas of interest and to prepare them for the rapidly changing engineering technology. These PEOs are carefully aligned with the vision and mission of the university and faculty and should be achieved by the graduates 3 to 4 years after graduating. These PEOs must be assessed and evaluated to determine the PEOs' attainment of the programme. Therefore, assessment and evaluation activities must be available to plan and organize the process of obtaining the PEOs' attainment. Surveys on graduate attributes need to be conducted to gain feedbacks from stakeholders 3 to 4 years after graduation. In this study, anonymous online questionnaire survey was created to obtain the feedbacks from the alumni. These feedbacks are then analysed to assess the PEOs' attainment. In order to evaluate the performance of the PEOs, performance indicators are developed and used in the evaluation. Outcomes from this study are used to determine the achievement of PEOs and to propose the improvement as part of continuous quality improvement (CQI). 25. Transformer health index prediction using feedforward neural network according to scoring and ranking method

Abstract

This paper presents a transformer health index prediction applying feedforward neural network (FFNN) according to scoring and ranking method. Power transformer is an important asset of a power system where the function is to convert the level of electrical power and transfer it to the consumer. Outage in transmission line that is caused by the power transformer might lead to the interruption of power supply. Transformer asset management is vital to monitor the operation of transformers in the system to prevent failure. The technique in performing asset management of the transformer is health index (HI). Therefore, this paper presents the assessment of transformer HI by applying artificial neural network (ANN). The FFNN training algorithms proposed in this research to predict the transformer HI include Levenberg–Marquardt (LM), quasi-Newton backpropagation (QNBP), and scaled conjugate gradient (SCG). The HI values obtained from these FFNN techniques were compared to the scoring and ranking method to validate the proposed technique. The performance of the proposed ANN was assessed according to the correlation coefficient and mean square error (MSE). According to the findings obtained, the transformer HI can be successfully predicted by applying different training algorithm of ANN. LM, QNBP and SCG proposed in this research could identify whether the transformer condition is very good, good, fair or poor. The ANN proposed in this research also has been verified with the ranking and scoring method where it produces similar identification of the transformer health index. According to the HI, advance action could be initiated whether to perform upgrade, maintenance, replacement, monitoring, repair, and contingency control of the transformer.

Abstract

This paper presents a load shedding scheme (LSS) based on system frequency and voltage stability (VS). In the proposed scheme, the amount of power imbalance is determined using a rate of change of frequency, and the load shedding priority is carried out based on a VS index. The load with the highest tendency for voltage collapse (based on the index value) is given first priority to be shed. Thus, by shedding the most sensitive load, the distribution system can be saved from power collapse and then the system can return to its nominal state after load shedding. The proposed LSS is validated through simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC software on a Malaysian distribution network that consists of two mini-hydro generators. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme manages to shed the optimal amount of load when compared to conventional and adaptive frequency LSS. Moreover, apart from frequency stability, the proposed scheme also shows a significant improvement in the voltage profile of the islanded system.

45. Determination of CCT due to interconnected link tripping using the OMIB and EAC

Abstract

This paper presents an algorithm to determine the critical clearing time (CCT) due to the effect of interconnected link tripping by applying the one machine infinite bus (OMIB) equivalent system method and equal area criterion (EAC). This paper also proposes the implementation of graphical user interface (GUI) to monitor and predict the CCT from time to time. The CCT is defined as the highest time interval by which the fault is expected to be cleared with the aim of maintaining the electricity supply stability. The computation of important numerical development of CCT is deduced from the entails three fault situations, which are; pre-fault, during fault and post-fault situations, with the main focus on pre-fault situation. The CCT becomes significantly shorter whilst transient instability is induced by a three-phase fault occurred at the bus bar next to the substation connected with a sensitive generator. It is sufficient to maintain the transient stability albeit fault occurred at other locations by setting the protection relay with the computed value of CCT. A circuit breaker which is installed and operated before the smallest CCT will not affect the transient instability throughout the occasion of fault. The IEEE Reliability Test System 1979 (IEEE RTS-79) is used to verify the accuracy of the proposed methodology in determining the CCT.
