Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been extensively utilized for diagnosing and prognosis of several diseases in recent years. This study identifies, appraises and synthesizes published studies on the use of AI for the prognosis of COVID-19. Method: Electronic search was performed using Medline, Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane and ProQuest. Studies that examined machine learning or deep learning methods to determine the prognosis of COVID-19 using CT or chest X-ray images were included. Polled sensitivity, specificity area under the curve and diagnostic odds ratio were calculated. Result: A total of 36 articles were included; various prognosis-related issues, including disease severity, mechanical ventilation or admission to the intensive care unit and mortality, were investigated. Several AI models and architectures were employed, such as the Siamense model, support vector machine, Random Forest , eXtreme Gradient Boosting, and convolutional neural networks. The models achieved 71%, 88% and 67% sensitivity for mortality, severity assessment and need for ventilation, respectively. The specificity of 69%, 89% and 89% were reported for the aforementioned variables. Conclusion: Based on the included articles, machine learning and deep learning methods used for the prognosis of COVID-19 patients using radiomic features from CT or CXR images can help clinicians manage patients and allocate resources more effectively. These studies also demonstrate that combining patient demographic, clinical data, laboratory tests and radiomic features improves model performances.

Robotic applications across industries demand advanced navigation for safe and smooth movement. Smooth path planning is crucial for mobile robots to ensure stable and efficient navigation, as it minimizes jerky movements and enhances overall performance Achieving this requires smooth collision-free paths. Partial Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Potential Field (PF) are notable path-planning techniques, however, they may struggle to produce smooth paths due to their inherent algorithms, potentially leading to suboptimal robot motion and increased energy consumption. In addition, while PSO efficiently explores solution spaces, it generates long paths and has limited global search. On the contrary, PF methods offer concise paths but struggle with distant targets or obstacles. To address this, we propose Smoothed Partial Swarm Optimization with Improved Potential Field (SPSO-IPF), combining both approaches and it is capable of generating a smooth and safe path. Our research demonstrates SPSO-IPF's superiority, proving its effectiveness in static and dynamic environments compared to a mere PSO or a mere PF approach.

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable versatility in various NLP tasks but encounter distinct challenges in biomedical due to the complexities of language and data scarcity. This paper investigates LLMs application in the biomedical domain by exploring strategies to enhance their performance for the NER task. Our study reveals the importance of meticulously designed prompts in the biomedical. Strategic selection of in-context examples yields a marked improvement, offering ~15-20\% increase in F1 score across all benchmark datasets for biomedical few-shot NER. Additionally, our results indicate that integrating external biomedical knowledge via prompting strategies can enhance the proficiency of general-purpose LLMs to meet the specialized needs of biomedical NER. Leveraging a medical knowledge base, our proposed method, DiRAG, inspired by Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), can boost the zero-shot F1 score of LLMs for biomedical NER. Large language models (LLMs) are susceptible to social-engineered attacks that are human-interpretable but require a high level of comprehension for LLMs to counteract. Existing defensive measures can only mitigate less than half of these attacks at most. To address this issue, we propose the Round Trip Translation (RTT) method, the first algorithm specifically designed to defend against social-engineered attacks on LLMs. RTT paraphrases the adversarial prompt and generalizes the idea conveyed, making it easier for LLMs to detect induced harmful behavior. This method is versatile, lightweight, and transferrable to different LLMs. Our defense successfully mitigated over 70% of Prompt Automatic Iterative Refinement (PAIR) attacks, which is currently the most effective defense to the best of our knowledge. We are also the first to attempt mitigating the MathsAttack and reduced its attack success rate by almost 40%. The paper presents the PCGPT framework, an innovative approach to procedural content generation (PCG) using offline reinforcement learning and transformer networks. PCGPT utilizes an autoregressive model based on transformers to generate game levels iteratively, addressing the challenges of traditional PCG methods such as repetitive, predictable, or inconsistent content. The framework models trajectories of actions, states, and rewards, leveraging the transformer's self-attention mechanism to capture temporal dependencies and causal relationships. The approach is evaluated in the Sokoban puzzle game, where the model predicts items that are needed with their corresponding locations. Experimental results on the game Sokoban demonstrate that PCGPT generates more complex and diverse game content. Interestingly, it achieves these results in significantly fewer steps compared to existing methods, showcasing its potential for enhancing game design and online content generation. Our model represents a new PCG paradigm which outperforms previous methods.

The utilization of model checking has been suggested as a formal verification technique for analyzing critical systems. However, the primary challenge in applying to complex systems is state space explosion problem. To address this issue, bisimulation minimization has emerged as a prominent method for reducing the number of states in a labeled transition system, aiming to overcome the difficulties associated with the state space explosion problem. In the case of systems exhibiting stochastic behaviors, probabilistic bisimulation is employed to minimize a given model, obtaining its equivalent form with fewer states. Recently, various techniques have been introduced to decrease the time complexity of the iterative methods used to compute probabilistic bisimulation for stochastic systems that display nondeterministic behaviors. In this paper, we propose a new technique to partition the state space of a given probabilistic model to its bisimulation classes. This technique uses the PRISM program of a given model and constructs some small versions of the model to train a classifier. It then applies machine learning classification techniques to approximate the related partition. The resulting partition is used as an initial one for the standard bisimulation technique in order to reduce the running time of the method. A long-standing goal in the field of sensory substitution is to enable sound perception for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people by visualizing audio content. Different from existing models that translate to hand sign language, between speech and text, or text and images, we target immediate and low-level audio to video translation that applies to generic environment sounds as well as human speech. Since such a substitution is artificial, without labels for supervised learning, our core contribution is to build a mapping from audio to video that learns from unpaired examples via high-level constraints. For speech, we additionally disentangle content from style, such as gender and dialect. Qualitative and quantitative results, including a human study, demonstrate that our unpaired translation approach maintains important audio features in the generated video and that videos of faces and numbers are well suited for visualizing high-dimensional audio features that can be parsed by humans to match and distinguish between sounds and words. Accurate thermal analysis of composites and porous media requires detailed characterization of local thermal properties in small scale. For some important applications such as lithium-ion batteries, changes in the properties during the operation makes the analysis even more challenging, necessitating a rapid characterization. We propose a new method to characterize the thermal properties of particulate composites based on actual micro-images. Our computer-vision-based approach constructs 3D images from stacks of 2D SEM images and then extracts several representative elemental volumes (REVs) from the reconstructed images at random places, which leads to having a range of geometrical features for different REVs. A deep learning algorithm is designed based on convolutional neural nets to take the shape of the geometry and result in the effective conductivity of the REV. The training of the network is performed in two methods: First, based on implementing a coarser grid that uses the average values of conductivities from the fine grid and the resulted effective conductivity from the DNS solution of the fine grid. The other method uses conductivity values on cross sections from each REV in different directions. The results of training based on averaging show that using a coarser grid in the network does not have a meaningful effect on the network error; however, it decreases the training time up to three orders of magnitude. We showed that one general network can make accurate predictions using different types of electrode images, representing the difference in the geometry and constituents. Moreover, training based on averaging is more accurate than training based on cross sections. The study of the robustness of implementing a machine learning technique in predicting the thermal percolation shows the prediction error is almost half of the error from predictions based on the volume fraction.

In this paper, we show that a revised convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) can decrease, by orders of magnitude, the time needed for the phase-resolved prediction of waves in a spatiotemporal domain of a nonlinear dispersive wave field. The problem of predicting such waves suffers from two major challenges that have so far hindered analytical or direct computational solutions in real time or faster: (i) the reconstruction problem, that is, how one can calculate from measurable wave amplitude data the state of the wave field (wave components, nonlinear couplings, etc.), and (ii) if such a reconstruction is in hand, how to integrate equations fast enough to be able to predict an upcoming rouge wave in a timely manner. Here, we demonstrate that these two challenges can be overcome at once through advanced machine learning techniques based on spatiotemporal patches of the time history of wave height data in the domain. Specifically, as a benchmark here we consider equations that govern the evolution of weakly nonlinear surface gravity waves such as those propagating on the surface of the oceans. For the case of oceanic surface waves considered here, we demonstrate that the proposed methodology, while maintaining a high accuracy, can make phase-resolved predictions more than two orders of magnitude faster than numerically integrating governing equations.

We introduce an online outlier detection algorithm to detect outliers in a sequentially observed data stream. For this purpose, we use a two-stage filtering and hedging approach. In the first stage, we construct a multi-modal probability density function to model the normal samples. In the second stage, given a new observation, we label it as an anomaly if the value of aforementioned density function is below a specified threshold at the newly observed point. In order to construct our multi-modal density function, we use an incremental decision tree to construct a set of subspaces of the observation space. We train a single component density function of the exponential family using the observations, which fall inside each subspace represented on the tree. These single component density functions are then adaptively combined to produce our multi-modal density function, which is shown to achieve the performance of the best convex combination of the density functions defined on the subspaces. As we observe more samples, our tree grows and produces more subspaces. As a result, our modeling power increases in time, while mitigating overfitting issues. In order to choose our threshold level to label the observations, we use an adaptive thresholding scheme. We show that our adaptive threshold level achieves the performance of the optimal pre-fixed threshold level, which knows the observation labels in hindsight. Our algorithm provides significant performance improvements over the state of the art in our wide set of experiments involving both synthetic as well as real data.

We propose online algorithms for sequential learning in the contextual multi-armed bandit setting. Our approach is to partition the context space and then optimally combine all of the possible mappings between the partition regions and the set of bandit arms in a data driven manner. We show that in our approach, the best mapping is able to approximate the best arm selection policy to any desired degree under mild Lipschitz conditions. Therefore, we design our algorithms based on the optimal adaptive combination and asymptotically achieve the performance of the best mapping as well as the best arm selection policy. This optimality is also guaranteed to hold even in adversarial environments since we do not rely on any statistical assumptions regarding the contexts or the loss of the bandit arms. Moreover, we design efficient implementations for our algorithms in various hierarchical partitioning structures such as lexicographical or arbitrary position splitting and binary trees (and several other partitioning examples). For instance, in the case of binary tree partitioning, the computational complexity is only log-linear in the number of regions in the finest partition. In conclusion, we provide significant performance improvements by introducing upper bounds (w.r.t. the best arm selection policy) that are mathematically proven to vanish in the average loss per round sense at a faster rate compared to the state-of-the-art. Our experimental work extensively covers various scenarios ranging from bandit settings to multi-class classification with real and synthetic data. In these experiments, we show that our algorithms are highly superior over the state-of-the-art techniques while maintaining the introduced mathematical guarantees and a computationally decent scalability.
