Condensed Matter - Abstract
Quasicrystals are metal alloys whose noncrystallographic symmetry and lack of structural periodicity challenge methods of experimental structure determination. Here we employ quantum-based total-energy calculations to predict the structure of a decagonal quasicrystal from first principles considerations. We employ Monte Carlo simulations, taking as input the knowledge that a decagonal phase occurs in Al-Ni-Co near a given composition, and using a few features of the experimental Patterson function. The resulting structure obeys a nearly deterministic decoration of tiles on a hierarchy of length scales related by powers of $\tau$, the golden mean., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks.

Background and Aims: Omentin, as an adipokine, has been reported to improve insulin resistance and inflammation may be related to fatty acids (FAs). Plasma FAs can be used as biomarkers of dietary FAs and endogenous FA exposure. We aimed to evaluate the association between plasma FAs pattern and omentin gene expression in adipose tissue (AT).Methods and Results: Visceral and subcutaneous AT and fasting blood were gathered from 97 adults aged >18 years. Participants were already admitted to hospitals for elective abdominal surgery. Dietary intakes were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. The relative omentin gene expression in visceral and subcutaneous AT was measured by Real-Time PCR and plasma FAs was determined by gas chromatography. The principal component analysis was performed to derive the FAs pattern from plasma individual FAs. Three patterns were derived from plasma FAs, 1) high de-novo lipogenesis (DNL), 2) high trans saturated fatty acids (SFA), and docosahexaenoic acid (trans-SFA/DHA), and 3) high long-chain SFA (LC-SFA). After adjustment for age, sex, and insulin concentration, only the LC-SFA pattern was associated with omentin gene expression in visceral AT (β = 2.25, P = 0.03). Other patterns were not associated with omentin gene expression in visceral and subcutaneous AT.Conclusion: A pattern characterized by high levels of myristic acid (14:0), heptadecanoic acid (17:0), pentadecanoic acid (15:0), and Cis_heptadecanoic acid (17:1), which named LC-SFA was related to omentin gene expression in visceral AT. 18. Power Flow Control in Multi-Terminal HVDC Grids Using a Serial-Parallel DC Power Flow Controller

© 2013 IEEE. Multi-terminal HVDC (MT-HVDC) grids have no capability of power flow control in a self-sufficient manner. To address this important issue, utilization of dc-dc high power and high-voltage converters is motivated. However, proposing suitable partial-rated dc-dc converters as well as their suitable modeling and control in both primary and secondary control layers as well as the stability analysis are the existing challenges that should be alleviated beforehand. This paper addresses the control of power flow problem through the application of a power converter with a different connection configuration, namely, serial parallel dc power flow controller (SPDC-PFC). The SPDC-PFC input is the transmission line voltage, and its output is transmission line current. Therefore, employing a full-power dc-dc converter is avoided as a merit. Additionally, in this paper, the common two-layer MT-HVDC grid control framework comprised of primary and secondary layers is efficiently modified in order to integrate the SPDC-PFC. A differential direct voltage versus active power droop control scheme is applied to the SPDC-PFC at the local control layer, guaranteeing dynamic stability, while an extended dc power-flow routine - integrating the SPDC-PFC - is developed at the secondary control layer to ensure the static stability of the entire MT-HVDC grid. The proposed control framework enables the SPDC-PFC to regulate the flow of current/power in the envisioned HVDC transmission line. From the static and dynamic simulation results conducted on the test CIGRE B4 MT-HVDC grid, successful operation of the proposed SPDC-PFC and control solutions are demonstrated by considering power flow control action. This paper addresses channel training and data communication over multi-input multi-input (MIMO) interference networks. We consider a pilot-assisted interference alignment scheme in which part of radio resources are allocated to channel training and the remaining resources are used for data transmission. A more accurate channel estimation can be obtained by increasing pilot transmission power. Since each transmitter has limited energy budget, this implies that less power is available for data transmission. Clearly, there is a trade off between the allocated power for channel training and the one for data communication. In order to investigate this trade off, first we compute an achievable sum-rate, and next we find the optimum power allocation to pilot transmission and data transmission. We investigated current induced depairing in the Bi2Te3/FeTe topological insulator-chalcogenide interface superconductor. The measured depairing current density provides information on the magnetic penetration depth and superfluid density, which in turn shed light on the nature of the normal state that underlies the interfacial superconductivity. © 2015 American Physical Society.

By and large, todays mega cities are confronting considerable urban development in which many new buildings are being constructed in fringe areas of these cities. This remarkable urban development will probably end in vegetation reduction even though each mega city requires adequate areas of vegetation, which is considered to be crucial and helpful for these cities from a wide variety of perspectives such as air pollution reduction, soil erosion prevention, and eco system as well as environmental protection. One of the optimum methods for monitoring this vital component of each city is multi-temporal satellite images acquisition and using change detection techniques. In this research, the vegetation and urban changes of Mashhad, Iran, were monitored using an object-oriented (marker-based watershed algorithm) post classification comparison (PCC) method. A Bi-temporal multi-spectral Landsat satellite image was used from the study area to detect the changes of urban and vegetation areas and to find a relation between these changes. The results of this research demonstrate that during 1987-2017, Mashhad urban area has increased about 22525 hectares and the vegetation area has decreased approximately 4903 hectares. These statistics substantiate the close relationship between urban development and vegetation reduction. Moreover, the overall accuracies of 85.5% and 91.2% were achieved for the first and the second image classification, respectively. In addition, the overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of change detection were assessed 84.1% and 70.3%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the unprecedented growth of urban population and urban development, we are faced with the growing trend of illegal building (IB) construction. Field visit, as the currently used method of IB detection, is time and man power consuming, in addition to its high cost. Therefore, an automatic IB detection is required. Acquiring multi-temporal satellite images and using image processing techniques for automatic change detection is one of the optimum methods which can be used in IB monitoring. In this research an automatic method of IB detection has been proposed. Two-temporal panchromatic satellite images of IRS-P5 of the study area in a part of Tehran, the city map and an updated spatial database of existing buildings were used to detect the suspected IBs. In the pre-processing step, the images were geometrically and radiometrically corrected. In the next step, the changed pixels were detected using K-means clustering technique because of its quickness and less user’s intervention required. Then, all the changed pixels of each building were identified and the change percentage of each building with the standard threshold of changes was compared to detect the buildings which are under construction. Finally, the IBs were detected by checking the municipality database. The unmatched constructed buildings with municipal database will be field checked to identify the IBs. The results show that out of 343 buildings appeared in the images; only 19 buildings were detected as under construction and three of them as unlicensed buildings. Furthermore, the overall accuracies of 83%, 79% and 75% were obtained for K-means change detection, detection of under construction buildings and IBs detection, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study the landfill leachate obtained from Tabriz Landfill site was first treated in a suspended growth activated sludge bioreactor which then was turned to a moving-bed biofilm bioreactor under thermophilic conditions (50°C). The average Soluble Chemical Oxygen Demand (SCOD) removal ranged from 70% to 62% as Organic Loading Rate (OLR) increased from 0.454 to 4.678 kgCOD/(m³.d). Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) values were set to 12, 14, 16.8, and 21 h. The recycle ratio of biomass ranged from 1 to 1.5. The total biomass concentration was in the range of 2600-3100 mg/L of which 60-65 percent was in the form of biofilm. It was COD removal efficiency was 5% to 10% higher in moving-bed biofilm operation compared to suspended growth one at the same OLR and HRT. Respirometry experiments revealed that readily biodegradable organic compounds accounted for 5.7% and 5.2% of substrate under thermophilic and mesophilic conditions, respectively. The maximum resulting oxygen uptake rates were 0.21 mgO

This paper proposes an approach to integrate Web content mining into Web usage mining. The textual content of web pages is captured through extraction of frequent word sequences, which are combined with Web server log files to discover useful information and association rules about users' behaviors. Hemoglobin LeporeBostonwas found in two Iranian families presenting the clinical manifestations of β-thalassemia trait. Electrophoresic examination of the patients’ hemoglobin revealed the presence of an abnormal hemoglobin with Lepore characteristics. Fingerprints and amino acid analysis of selected peptides of this variant suggest that it is similar to LeporeBoston.
