Post-collisional volcanism contains important clues for understanding the processes that prevail in orogenic belts, including those in the mantle and the uplift and collapse of continents. Here we report new geochronological and geochemical data for a suite of post-collisional Miocene to Pleistocene volcanic rocks from northwest Iran. Four groups of volcanic rocks can be distinguished according to their geochemical and isotopic signatures, including: (1) Miocene depleted lavas with high Nd and Hf but low Pb and Sr isotopic ratios, (2) less depleted lavas with quite variable Pb isotopic composition, (3) lavas with non-radiogenic Nd and Hf isotopic values, but highly radiogenic Sr and Pb isotopic composition, and (4) Pleistocene adakitic rocks with depleted isotopic signatures. The isotopic data reveal that the Miocene rocks are derived from asthenospheric and highly heterogeneous sub-continental lithospheric mantle sources. Evidence suggests that the lithospheric mantle contains recycled upper continental material and is isotopically similar to the enriched mantle two (EMII) end-member. Analysis of Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf-O isotopes in both mineral and rock groundmass, in conjunction with energy-constrained assimilation and fractional crystallization (EC-AFC) numerical modeling, demonstrates that the incorporation of continental crust during magma fractionation via AFC had an insignificant impact on the isotopic composition of the Miocene lavas. Moreover, adakites are the youngest rocks and show a geochemical signature consistent with the partial melting of a young and mafic continental lower crust. Both seismological data and geochemical signatures on these Miocene to Pleistocene volcanic rocks indicate the initiation of asthenospheric upwelling and orogen uplift in the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, which occurred after slab break-off, following the Neotethyan closure.

New trace-element, radiogenic Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic and geochronological data from Middle-Late Cretaceous Zagros ophiolites of Iran give new insights into the tectono-magmatic history of these supra-subduction zone (SSZ)-type ophiolites. The distribution of Middle-Late Cretaceous SSZ-type ophiolites in Iran comprises two parallel belts: (1) the outer Zagros ophiolitic belt and (2) the inner Zagros ophiolitic belt. These Middle-Late Cretaceous ophiolites were generated by seafloor spreading in what became the fore-arc and back-arc during the subduction initiation event and now define a ∼3000-km-long belt from Cyprus to Turkey, Syria, Iran, the UAE, and Oman. The Zagros ophiolites contain complete (if disrupted) mantle and crustal sequences. Mantle sequences from both outer-belt and inner-belt ophiolites are dominated by dunites, harzburgites, and lherzolites with minor chromitite lenses. Peridotites are also intruded by gabbros and a variety of mafic to minor felsic (plagiogranite and dacite) dikes. Crustal rocks comprise ultramafic-mafic cumulates as well as isotropic gabbros, sheeted dike complexes, pillowed and massive lavas, and felsic rocks. Our new zircon U-Pb ages indicate that the outer-belt and inner-belt ophiolites formed near coevally during the Middle-Late Cretaceous; 100−96 Ma for the outer belt and 105−94 Ma for the inner belt. Both incompatible-element ratios and isotopic data confirm that depleted mantle and variable contributions of subduction components were involved in the genesis of outer-belt and inner-belt rocks. Our data for the outer belt and inner belt along with those from better-studied ophiolites in Cyprus, Turkey, the UAE, and Oman lead to the conclusion that a broad, ∼3000-km-long swath of fore-arc lithosphere was created during Middle-Late Cretaceous time.

Continental-arc igneous rock compositions change in response to the transition from subduction to collision and these changes can reveal how the crust, lithosphere and magma sources evolved. Neotethys-related Late Cretaceous to Pleistocene subduction- and collision-related magmatic rocks from the ~350 km long southeast Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt (UDMB) of Iran provide an excellent natural laboratory to better understand these changes. These igneous rocks are well-exposed and moderately eroded to reveal a nearly complete record since subduction initiation at ~95 Ma. We analyzed new samples for major and trace elements (83 samples), Srsingle bondNd isotopic compositions (47 samples), and Usingle bondPb zircon ages (26 samples) and compiled geochemical and geochronological data on the southeast segment of the UDMB. The geochronological data reveal two magmatic pulses at ~80–70 Ma and ~50–0 Ma. Important changes in magmatic compositions reflect initial collision with Arabia at ~32 Ma, changing from normal calc-alkaline to increasingly adakitic immediately after collision began. Five stages can be identified: 1) normal continental-arc magmatism during the Late Cretaceous; 2) arc quiescence in Paleocene and Early Eocene time; 3) Middle-Late Eocene extensional arc magmatism related to slab rollback; 4) early collision and crustal thickening during the Early Oligocene; and 5) slab breakoff, asthenospheric upwelling, and associated adakitic magmatism from Middle Miocene onward. Temporal changes in UDMB magmas reflect the response of the overriding plate to changes in the geometry of the subducting Neotethyan lithosphere and to collision between Arabia and Iran. How new subduction zones form is an ongoing scientific question with key implications for our understanding of how this process influences the behavior of the overriding plate. Here we focus on the effects of a Late Cretaceous subduction-initiation (SI) event in Iran and show how SI caused enough extension to open a back-arc basin in NE Iran. The Late Cretaceous Torbat-e-Heydarieh ophiolite (THO) is well exposed as part of the Sabzevar-Torbat-e-Heydarieh ophiolite belt. It is dominated by mantle peridotite, with a thin crustal sequence. The THO mantle sequence consists of harzburgite, clinopyroxene-harz burgite, plagioclase lherzolite, impregnated lherzolite, and dunite. Spinel in THO mantle peridotites show variable Cr# (10-63), similar to both abyssal and fore-arc peridotites. The igneous rocks (gabbros and dikes intruding mantle peridotite, pillowed and massive lavas, amphibole gabbros, plagiogranites and associated diorites, and diabase dikes) display rare earth element patterns similar to MORB, arc tholeiite and back-arc basin basalt. Zircons from six samples, including plagiogranites and dikes within mantle peridotite, yield U-Pb ages of ca. 99-92 Ma, indicating that the THO formed during the Late Cretaceous and was magmatically active for similar to 7 m.y. THO igneous rocks have variable epsilon Nd(t) of +5.7 to +8.2 and epsilon Hf(t) ranging from +14.9 to +21.5; zircons have epsilon Hf(t) of +8.1 to +18.5. These isotopic compositions indicate that the THO rocks were derived from an isotopically depleted mantle source similar to that of the Indian Ocean, which was slightly affected by the recycling of subducted sediments. We conclude that the THO and other Sabzevar-Torbat-e-Heydarieh ophiolites formed in a back-arc basin well to the north of the Late Cretaceous fore-arc, now represented by the Zagros ophiolites, testifying that a broad region of Iran was affected by upper-plate extension accompanying Late Cretaceous subduction initiation.

New and compiled geochemical, isotopic and geochronological data allow us to propose a new explanation for Paleogene oceanicmagmatic rocks alongtheIran–Iraqborder.These rocks are represented byathick pile(>1000 m) ofpillow lavas and pelagic sediments and underlying plutonic rocks. These are sometimes argued to represent a Paleogene ophiolite but there are no associated mantle rocks. Integrated zircon U–Pb ages, bulk rock major and trace element and radiogenic isotope data indicate that these rocks are more likely related to forearc rifting due to extreme extension during Late Paleogene time whichalsotriggeredhigh-fluxmagmatismintheUrumieh–DokhtarMagmaticBeltandexhumationofcorecomplexesinIran. These observations are most consistent with formation of the Paleogene oceanic igneous rocks in a >220 km long forearc rift zone.

Igneous activity in the rear-arc of the Paleogene Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt of Iran has to date been poorly studied. An example of such activity, Late Eocene potassic mafic to intermediate magmatic rocks in the Lahrud area of NW Iran, is the focus of this work. These lavas include olivine-bearing clinopyroxene-phyric basalts, analcime-bearing leucite-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts, andesites, and trachytes, and Paleocene-Early Eocene pyroclastic rocks. Monzo-syenite plugs (dated here at similar to 37 Ma), clinopyroxene-phyric basaltic dikes, and leucite-bearing clinopyroxene-phyric basaltic dikes intrude older lavas and pyroclastic rocks. Olivine-bearing clinopyroxene-phyric basalts and analcime-bearing leucite-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts are characterized by large phenocrysts of olivine, clinopyroxene, leucite, and analcime. Clinopyroxene-rich enclaves and partially resorbed mantle xenoliths also occur. Olivine phenocrysts are zoned from high-Mg# cores (Mg# = 90) to Fe-rich rims (Mg# = 66). Clinopyroxene phenocrysts from the olivine-bearing clinopyroxene-phyric basalts, analcime-bearing leucite-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts and clinopyroxene crystals in the enclaves show complex oscillatory zoning, sieve textures, and resorption textures, but with systematic core-rim compositional trends. Their Sr-87/Sr-86 isotopic compositions measured in situ range from 0.7037 to 0.7068 (mean = 0.7052 = 0.0004), suggesting negligible crustal assimilation during fractional crystallization. The Lahrud lavas are potassic and are enriched in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements such as Th, Rb, K and U. High field strength elements (HFSE), such as Nb, are depleted in the olivine-bearing clinopyroxene-phyric basalts and analcime-bearing leucite-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts, but enriched in the trachytes and trachytic ignimbrites.
