Carboxylic-acid-stabilised γ-FeOOH particles (ferroxanes) are synthesized using a precipitation from aqueous solution, and a following reaction with acetic acid. The materials produced with these powders are investigated by XRD, SEM, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and impedance spectroscopy. Conductivity of both sintered and unsintered materials decreases strongly with a decrease in water partial pressure in the atmosphere during the test. The highest conductivity (7·10−3 S cm−1) is measured in air (pH2O = 0.037 atm) at room temperature on sintered material. The conductivity values are compared with other works in the literature and the dependence of conductivity on surface area and pore size is discussed. It is suggested that both unsintered and sintered materials act as proton conductors at room temperature under moderate humidity conditions.

High temperature electrolysis of water and steam may provide an efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly production of H2 using electricity produced from sustainable, non-fossil energy sources. To achieve cost competitive electrolysis cells that are both high performing i.e. minimum internal resistance of the cell, and long-term stable, it is critical to develop electrode materials that are optimal for steam electrolysis. In this article electrolysis cells for electrolysis of water or steam at temperatures above 200 °C for production of H2 are reviewed. High temperature electrolysis is favourable from a thermodynamic point of view, because a part of the required energy can be supplied as thermal heat, and the activation barrier is lowered increasing the H2 production rate. Only two types of cells operating at high temperature (above 200 °C) have been described in the literature, namely alkaline electrolysis cells (AEC) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC). In the present review emphasis is on state-of-the art electrode materials and development of new materials for SOECs. Based on the state-of-the-art performance for SOECs H2 production by high temperature steam electrolysis using SOECs is competitive to H2 production from fossil fuels at electricity prices below 0.02–0.03 € per kWh. Though promising SOEC results on H2 production have been reported a substantial R&D is still required to obtain inexpensive, high performing and long-term stable electrolysis cells. A model describing the performance of a fuel cell based on 10 mol% gadolinia-doped ceria, Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95−x (CG10), was formulated. The total electrical conductivity of CG10 was measured under very reducing conditions in the temperature range of 753 K to 948 K. Oxygen permeation experiments were carried out to measure the leak current through a ceria electrolyte. The results of the measurements are compared with predictions of the formulated model. Furthermore, the response of a fuel cell to changing operating conditions such as external load, temperature, electrode polarization resistances, and defect chemistry is investigated using the model. It is found that the maximum achievable efficiency of a CG10-based fuel cell is increased when (1) the temperature is decreased, when (2) the electrolyte thickness is increased, or when (3) the cathode polarization resistance is decreased. The efficiency can also in certain circumstances be increased by an increase of anode polarization resistance. Finally, the efficiency is reduced if the vacancy formation enthalpy is decreased to the level of fine-grained CG10. The performance of a CG10-based cell is evaluated by comparing it with a state-of-the-art zirconia-based cell. At 873 K, the efficiency of a fuel cell with a 10-μm CG10 electrolyte was limited to 0.74, whereas a cell with a perfect electrolyte would have an efficiency of 1. The power output of the CG10 cell at this efficiency is, however, four times larger than the zirconia-based cell at the same efficiency. This is due to the much lower cathode polarization resistance of -CG10 cathodes on CG10 compared to the (La0.75Sr0.25)0.95MnO3 cathodes on stabilized zirconia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The perovskites (La0.85Sr0.15)0.98CoO3 - d and (La0.85Sr0.15)1.00CoO3 - d have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR). This system was chosen in order to investigate the influence of cation vacancies on the transport properties in the materials. From ECR-measurements it is concluded that no difference in the chemical diffusion coefficient for oxide ions between the two samples can be found. The activation energy for the chemical diffusion coefficient has been found to be 107 ± 5 kJ mol- 1. However, the surface exchange coefficient differs between the two samples. The Co-rich sample has a significantly higher surface exchange coefficient than the A/B-stoichiometric sample. For both samples the surface exchange coefficient was almost independent of the temperature. At all temperatures the Co-rich sample had a significantly higher electrical conductivity. The difference in electrical conductivity between the two samples diminished when going to higher temperatures. Both materials can be assigned to a single phase hexagonal perovskite. An annealed sample of (La0.85Sr0.15)0.98CoO3 - d did however contain an unidentified secondary phase on the surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
