Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. Abstract

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of 76Ge at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2+1 state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Dopplershift method with the K\"oln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2+1 states in 72,74Zn were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2+1 \rightarrow 0+) = 385(39) and 370(33) e2fm4, respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point towards a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete {\gamma}-softness at N = 42., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

To investigate the possible X(5) character of 122Ba, suggested by the ground state band energy pattern, the lifetimes of the lowest yrast states of 122Ba have been measured, via the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method. The relevant levels have been populated by using the 108Cd(16O,2n)122Ba and the 112Sn(13C,3n)122Ba reactions. The B(E2) values deduced in the present work are compared to the predictions of the X(5) model and to calculations performed in the framework of the IBA-1 and IBA-2 models.

4. Prospects for CDM sub-halo detection using high angular resolution observations

Abstract

In the CDM scenario, dark matter halos are assembled hierarchically from smaller subunits. A long-standing problem with this picture is that the number of sub-halos predicted by CDM simulations is orders of magnitudes higher than the known number of satellite galaxies in the vicinity of the Milky Way. A plausible way out of this problem could be that the majority of these sub-halos somehow have so far evaded detection. If such "dark galaxies" do indeed exist, gravitational lensing may offer one of the most promising ways to detect them. Dark matter sub-halos in the 1e6 - 1e10 solar mass range should cause strong gravitational lensing on (sub)milliarcsecond scales. We study the feasibility of a strong lensing detection of dark sub-halos by deriving the image separations expected for density profiles favoured by recent simulations and comparing these to the angular resolution of both existing and upcoming observational facilities. 5. Strong lensing by subhalos in the dwarf-galaxy mass range I: Image separations

The cold dark matter scenario predicts that a large number of dark subhalos should be located within the halo of each Milky-way sized galaxy. One tell-tale signature of such dark subhalos could be additional milliarcsecond-scale image splitting of quasars previously known to be multiply-imaged on arcsecond scales. Here, we estimate the image separations for the subhalo density profiles favoured by recent N-body simulations, and compare these to the angular resolution of both existing and upcoming observational facilities. We find, that the image separations produced are very sensitive to the exact subhalo density profile assumed, but in all cases considerably smaller than previous estimates based on the premise that subhalos can be approximated by singular isothermal spheres. Only the most optimistic subhalo models produce image separations that would be detectable with current technology, and many models produce image separations that will remain unresolved with all telescopes expected to become available in the foreseeable future. Detections of dark subhalos through image-splitting effects will therefore be far more challenging than currently believed, albeit not necessarily impossible., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Context: Ly-alpha-emitters have proven to be excellent probes of faint, star-forming galaxies in the high redshift universe. However, although the sample of known emitters is increasingly growing, their nature (e.g. stellar masses, ages, metallicities, star-formation rates) is still poorly constrained. Aims: We aim to study the nature of Ly-alpha-emitters, to find the properties of a typical Ly-alpha-emitting galaxy and to compare these properties with the properties of other galaxies at similar redshift, in particular Lyman-break galaxies. Methods: We have performed narrow-band imaging at the VLT, focused on Ly-alpha at redshift z ~ 3.15, in the GOODS-S field. We have identified a sample of Ly-alpha-emitting candidates, and we have studied their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs). Results: We find that the emitters are best fit by an SED with low metallicity (Z/Z_sun = 0.005), low dust extinction (A_V ~ 0.32) and medium stellar masses of approximately 10^9 M_sun. The age is not very well constrained. One object out of 24 appears to be a high redshift Ly-alpha-emitting dusty starburst galaxy. We find filamentary structure as traced by the Ly-alpha-emitters at the 4 sigma level. The rest-frame UV SED of these galaxies is very similar to that of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and comply with the selection criteria for U-band drop-outs, except they are intrinsically fainter than the current limit for LBGs. 7. Why does the clustering of haloes depend on their formation history

Abstract

We discuss in the framework of the excursion set formalism a recent discovery from N-body simulations that the clustering of haloes of given mass depends on their formation history. We review why the standard implementation of this formalism is unable to explain such dependencies, and we show that this can, in principle, be rectified by implementing in full an ellipsoidal collapse model where collapse depends not only on the overdensity but also on the shape of the initial density field. We also present an alternative remedy for this deficiency, namely the inclusion of collapse barriers for pancakes and filaments, together with the assumption that formation history depends on when these barriers are crossed. We implement both these extensions in a generalised excursion set method, and run large Monte Carlo realisations to quantify the effects. Our results suggest that effects as large as those found in simulations can only arise in the excursion set formalism if the formation history of a halo does indeed depend on the size of its progenitor filaments and pancakes. We also present conditional distributions of progenitor pancakes and filaments for low-mass haloes identified at present epoch, and discuss a recent claim by Mo et.al. that most low-mass haloes were embedded in massive pancakes at $z\sim 2$., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

8. Lensing effects of misaligned disks in dark matter halos

Abstract

We study the observational signatures of the lensing signal produced by dark matter halos with embedded misaligned disks. This issue is of particular interest at the present time since most of the observed multiple lens systems have magnification ratios and image geometries that are not well-fit by standard mass models. The presence of substructure exterior to the lens has been invoked by several authors in the context of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models in order to explain the anamolous magnification ratios. We emphasize that the anomalous magnification ratios may be an artifact of the simple one-component mass models currently in use; the inclusion of a misaligned disk may be able to mimic the effect of substructure. These slight spatial offsets between the dark matter halo and the disk, which are likely to occur during or as a consequence of interactions or mergers, lead to complex image configurations and non-standard magnification ratios. We investigate two illustrative lens models: a spiral disk embedded within a dark matter halo, and a compact disk-like component within an elliptical galaxy. The expected fraction of galaxies with a misaligned disk is estimated to be of the order of 10%. In such cases we find that the resultant lensing geometries are unusual, with high image multiplicities. The caustic structures - both radial and tangential - are drastically modified and the magnification ratios differ compared to expectations from standard lens models. The additional parameters required to specify the relative alignment of the mass components in the primary lens introduce yet another source of uncertainty in the mass modeling of gravitational lens systems., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 25 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The simulation tool lcpSim can be used to investigate special level crossing problems of queuing systems of type HYPOk / HYPOr / 1 // n embedded in different Markovian environments (recently referred to as Markov modulated ones). Our observed system consists of n heterogeneous machines (requests) and a server that 'repairs' the broken machines according to the most commonly used service disciplines, such as FIFO, LIFO, PPS, HOL, Preemptive Priorities (Resume, Repeat), Transfer, Polling, Nearest. We specify a maximum number of stopped machines for an operating system and our aim is to give the main steady-state performance measures of the system, such as, server utilization, machine utilization, mean waiting times, mean response times, the probability of an operating system and the mean operating time of the system. These values can be calculated by lcpSim level crossing problem Simulation package for different random environment types and service disciplines.

Abstract

A first performance test of the Coulomb excitation multipolarimetry (Coulex-multipolarimetry) method is presented. It is based on a 85Br pp3/ 2. pp1/ 2 spinflip experiment performed as part of the PreSPEC-AGATA campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionen-forschung (GSI). Via determination of background levels around the expected 85Br excitations as well as measured 197Au excitations, an upper limit for the M1 transition strength of the 1/2- 1. 3/2- g.s. transition in 85Br and a lower beam time limit for upcoming experimental campaigns utilizing Coulex-multipolarimetry have been inferred. The impact of the use of AGATA in its anticipated 1p configuration on these estimates is deduced via Geant4 simulations.

Abstract

A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive-ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN to obtain E2 and M1 transition matrix elements of Nd-140 using the multistep Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA. The absolute M1 strengths, B(M1; 2(2)(-) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.033(8)mu(2)(N), B(M1 ; 2(3)(+) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.26(-0.10)(+0.11)mu(2)(N), and B(M1; 2(4)+ -> 2(1)(+)) < 0.04 mu(2)(N) identify the 2(3)(+) state as the main fragment of the one-quadrupole-phonon proton-neutron mixed-symmetry state of Nd-140. The degree of F-spin mixing in Nd-140 was quantified with the determination of the mixing matrix element VF-mix < 7(-7)(-13) keV.

Abstract

Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se-80,Se-82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the gamma-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se-80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6(1)(+)) and (8(1)(+)) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4(1)(+) state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se-82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6(1)(+) state and the yrare 4(2)(+) state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10(1)(+)) state and of the 5(1)(-) state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states in the yrast band of the neutron-deficient nuclide W-166 have been measured utilizing the DPUNS plunger device at the target position of the JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal-plane spectrometer. Excited states in W-166 were populated in the Mo-92(Kr-78, 4p) reaction at a bombarding energy of 380 MeV. The measurements reveal a low value for the ratio of reduced transitions probabilities for the lowest-lying transitions B(E2; 4(+)-> 2(+)) / B(E2; 2(+)-> 0(+)) = 0.33(5), compared with the expected ratio for an axially deformed rotor (B-4/2 = 1.43)., QC 20170821

Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states of Dy-157 were measured by recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) and Doppler-shift attenuation (DSAM) methods. The gamma-ray coincidence data were analyzed by the differential decay curve method. The level scheme and the newly deduced transition strengths were simultaneously described in the framework of the particle plus triaxial rotor model (PTRM) and the rigid-rotor model.

Abstract

Background: While the N = 50 shell-gap evolution towards Ni-78 is presently in the focus of nuclear structure research, experimental information on the neutron effective single-particle energy sequence above the Ni-78 core remain scarce. Direct nucleon-exchange reactions are indeed difficult with presently available post-accelerated radioactive-ion beams (especially for high orbital-momentum orbitals) in this exotic region. Purpose: In this study we probe the evolution of the vlg(7/2)effective single-particle energy which is a key to understanding the possible evolution of the spin-orbit splitting due to the proton-neutron interaction in the Ni-78 region. To achieve this goal, a method based on lifetime measurements is used for the first time. The obtained lifetimes of the 7/2(1)(-) states in Kr-87 and Se-85 are used to investigate the vlg7/2 evolution. Method: Yrast and near-yrast states in the light N = 51 isotones Se-85 and Kr-87 were populated via multinucleon transfer reactions, using a Se-82 beam and a U-238 target at the LNL tandem-ALPI facility. The prompt y rays were detected by the AGATA Demonstrator and particle identification was performed using the PRISMA spectrometer. Lifetime measurements were performed by using the Cologne plunger device for deep inelastic reactions and the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique. Results: We obtain (tau(7/21+)) = 0.4(-0.4)(+1.6) ps for Kr-87. In the case of Se-85 an upper limit of 3(2) ps is obtained for the (tau(7/21+)) value. Conclusion: For Kr-87, the measured (7/2(1)(+)) lifetime is consistent with a core-coupled 2(+) circle times v2d(5/2) configuration for this state. This result is consistent with that obtained by direct reaction, which validates our method. For Se-85, the measured (7/2(1)(+)) lifetime limit indicates a very small contribution of the vlg(7/2) configuration to the wave function of this state.

Abstract

Reduced quadrupole transition probabilities for low-lying transitions in neutron-rich Se-84,Se-86 are investigated with a recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) experiment. The experiment was performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the Cologne Plunger device for the RDDS technique and the AGATA Demonstrator array for the gamma-ray detection coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se-86 the level lifetime of the yrast 2(1)(+) state and an upper limit for the lifetime of the 4(1)(+) state are determined for the first time. The results of Se-86 are in agreement with previously reported predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations using Ni78-I and Ni78-II effective interactions. In addition, intrinsic shape parameters of lowest yrast states in Se-86 are calculated. In semimagic Se-84 level lifetimes of the yrast 4(1)(+) and 6(1)(+) states are determined for the first time. Large-scale shell-model calculations using effective interactions Ni78-II, JUN45, jj4b, and jj4pna are performed. The calculations describe B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) and B(E2; 6(1)(+) -> 4(1)(+)) fairly well and point out problems in reproducing the experimental B(E2; 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+)).

Abstract

Lifetimes of yrast and nonyrast states of Pd-102 populated via the Zr-92(C-13, 3n) reaction are measured by means of the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique with a Cologne plunger coupled to a GASP spectrometer. The event-by-event data accumulated at 24 plunger distances in the range of 0.1 mu m to 9 mm are analyzed using the differential decay curve method. The resulting B(E2) values of the gamma transitions depopulating yrast-band members up to the I-pi = 8(+) state are found to deviate significantly from the corresponding predictions of the E(5) critical-point symmetry.

Abstract

The level structure of the neutron-rich Cu-69, Cu-71, and Cu-73 isotopes has been investigated by means of multinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states in Cu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrix elements for transitions from excited states in Cu-69,Cu-71,Cu-73 nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particle character of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, giving further insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g(9/2) orbital.

Abstract

WOS: 000326096300003 Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2(-)) states in Co-63,Co-65 have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA gamma-ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a U-238 target with a beam of Ni-64. Abstract

WOS: 000318527400007 Background: Neutron-rich nuclei with protons in the fp shell show an onset of collectivity around N=40. Spectroscopic information is required to understand the underlying mechanism and to determine the relevant terms of the nucleon-nucleon interaction that are responsible for the evolution of the shell structure in this mass region. Methods: We report on the lifetime measurement of the first 2(+) and 4(+) states in Zn-70,Zn-72 ,Zn-74 and the first 6(+) state in Zn-72 using the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The experiment was carried out at the INFN Laboratory of Legnaro with the AGATA demonstrator, first phase of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array of highly segmented, high-purity germanium detectors coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. The excited states of the nuclei of interest were populated in the deep inelastic scattering of a Ge-76 beam impinging on a U-238 target. Results: The maximum of collectivity along the chain of Zn isotopes is observed for Zn-72 at N=42. An unexpectedly long lifetime of 20(-5.2)(+1.8) ps was measured for the 4(+) state in Zn-74. Conclusions: Our results lead to small values of the B(E2;4(1)(+) -> 21(+))/B(E2;2(1)(+->)0(1)(+)) ratio for Zn-72,Zn-74, suggesting a significant noncollective contribution to these excitations. These experimental results are not reproduced by state-of-the-art microscopic models and call for lifetime measurements beyond the first 2(+) state in heavy zinc and nickel isotopes. Abstract

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-72,Zn-74. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of Ge-76 at the Grand Accelerateur National dIons Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2(1)(+) state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method with the Koln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) states in Zn-72,Zn-74 were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2(1)(+)- GT 0(+)) = 385(39) and 370(33) e(2) fm(4), respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge, and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point toward a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete gamma-softness at N = 42.

We have measured the lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-74 by the recoil distance Doppler-shift method at GANIL. It resulted to be of 27.6(43) ps and is consistent with previously measured values of transition rates from Coulomb excitation measurements.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei close to the double-magic nucleus Ni-78 has been investigated by measuring the lifetime of excited states. In this contribution, it will be presented the lifetime of the J(pi) = 7/2(-) excited state at 981 keV of the Cu-71 isotope, measured using the AGATA Demonstrator coupled to the PRISMA spectrometer and the Koln plunger setup. Abstract

Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2-) states in 63,65Co have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA γ-ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a 238U target with a beam of 64Ni. The experimental B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for 63,65Co are well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations that predict a constant trend of the B(E2) values up to the N=40 67Co isotope

Abstract

Recoil distance Doppler-shift and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were carried out for levels in Dy-155 through the coincident detection of. rays. Twenty-six lifetimes, most of them for the first time, were determined using the differential decay curve method for the analysis of the data. At low and medium spins, particle-plus-triaxial-rotor calculations reveal different quadrupole deformations for the one-quasineutron bands in this transitional nucleus. At high spin, the reduced B(E2) transition probabilities confirm with a better precision the results of a previous study implying decreased collectivity with increasing spin.
