Abstract

The article examines the study which compares cannabinoid pharmacokinetic properties in occasional and heavy users smoking a marijuana or placebo joint. The study, which investigated blood pharmacokinetic properties in occasional and heavy users in cannabis and placebo conditions, showed that the distribution and elimination patterns were comparable to the occasional users and the concentrations returned to 68-196% of the initial values during the 8 h after smoking. However, the maximal concentrations and the areas under the curves were significantly higher with marked interindividual variation and in contrast to the cannabis conditions, the tetrahydrocannabinol concentrations in the placebo phase decreased more slowly in accordance with a late elimination phase.

Abstract

The article discusses the pharmacokinetic properties of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in oral fluid and serum as part of the study on the effects of smoked cannabis. Ten participants were asked to participate on the study. Despite the reported incidental similarity on the elimination rates of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in serum and oral fluids, the high differences on their ratio are not reliable grounds for correlating THC concentrations in both serum and oral fluid.
